St. Stephen, Deacon & Martyr
We are a Stewardship Parish
Papal Prayer:
Lord God, by the creation of the first Eve and her
spouse, you made marriage and the family the
foundation of all human community.
By the birth of your Son, Jesus, to the new Eve,
Mary, our mother, and her most chaste spouse,
Joseph, you radically altered human history.
Through this Holy Family
you made a path for our salvation.
Strengthen the families of this world and impart to
them the gifts of the Holy Spirit. May the
upcoming World Meeting of Families with the
Holy Father serve to give you glory, and bring
strength and fortitude to families, who are being
assaulted by evil from every direction.
May the meeting be a source of light and hope to
all the world.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Our Parish Mission
Liturgy Schedule
A Catholic community of faith striving to witness to
the Gospel. Our Baptism and Confirmation calls us
to bring Christ’s Love to our families, our work
places and our community. Grateful for God’s gifts,
we seek to nurture those gifts and to give back to
the Lord by sharing our time, talent and material
treasure. In all of our parish activities we seek to
develop a personal relationship with the Lord who
directs our lives and a vision that sees the world
with the eyes of Christ and that leads to a commitment to justice. We seek a sense of unity in Christ
that leads us to be an open and welcoming people
and a sense of joy in being graced by the gifts of
God’s Love.

From Our Pastor
Dear People of St. Stephen,
Today I am sorry to announce that because
of family health reasons, Tammy Burns,
our religious education administrative
assistant, will be retiring at the end of this
month. Tammy has been a great blessing
for our RE program for the past 13 years.
She will be greatly missed. Please keep
Tammy and her family in your prayers.
My words today are unlikely to be timely,
since the Pope’s visit to the United States
and the World Meeting of Families in
Philadelphia that ends today have, I’m
sure, produced many challenging ideas on
living the Lord’s way of love in our
families and in our world. (I am writing
this last Monday because of printing
schedules.) The theme of the World
Meeting of Families – “Love is our
Mission: the Family Fully Alive” –
presents a challenging idea in itself. Family
has a critical role to play in our society as it
does in every society. Jesus came to reveal
the Father’s love and mercy and He passes
on this mission to each of us as individual
Christians and as a family of faith. Bishop
Robert Morneau, the auxiliary Bishop of
the Green Bay diocese, wrote these words
that for me give a focus to our living love
in our personal families and in our family
of faith:
“Another word for love is “for”, as in
“This is my body and blood given “for”
you.” In contrast, love is thwarted when
we are against one another, when the
Spirit of the Lord does not govern our
vision and our actions.”
Living “for” others is a way to express the
spirit of Jesus’ life-giving love. In the truth
of Jesus, living in love for God and for
others is the way to find our deepest
fulfillment. That spirit runs against much
of what we hear in our culture. When our
main focus is on satisfying our own needs
and desires, it makes it difficult to live love,
especially long-term commitments of love.
The spirit of living “for” love of others is
essential for family life. Spouses mutually
live for love of one another. Parents live
for love of their children, and adult
children often return that love by caring for
elderly parents. When the focus is on
living “for” others, life flourishes in
families, in a church family, and in
a community. When the focus is
self-centered, communities – families and
others – atrophy and may die. We come to
church each Sunday to be nourished by
God’s Word and by the Eucharist.
Receiving the very body and blood of
Christ nourishes us to live in His spirit, to
live “for” love of God and love of others.
Let’s pray that we may all live that spirit in
our families and in every area of our lives.
When we do, we live the way of love that
leads to life that lasts forever.
Next Sunday I invite you to participate in
the annual “Life Chain”, a silent and
prayerful witness in support of the life of
the unborn child. The Life Chain will be
along 159th Street, with St. Stephen’s place
by the Marquette Bank, just east of 76th
Ave. from 2 to 3:30PM. More information
is elsewhere in the bulletin. It seems very
appropriate that this witness comes on the
feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, October
4. St. Francis had a tremendous
appreciation for the dignity of all of God’s
creation. Pope Francis reflects that the
strong belief in the dignity of each person
and of all creation as God’s gifts to us. The
“Life Chain” is an opportunity to witness
to and to pray for respect and care for the
world that God has created and has
entrusted to us.
Finally, I invite all of you to consider
attending two inspiring presentations that
will be our church this October. Next
Saturday, October 3, Wayne Messmer
presents the one man play Damien, the
story of St. Damien, the leper priest of
Molokai. There will be both a matinee and
an evening performance. The play is a
powerful story that is presented in a very
moving way. I saw this presentation
several years ago and I look forward to
seeing it again. On Friday, October 16, Dr.
Allen Hunt, an excellent speaker who
works with Matthew Kelly’s Dynamic
Catholic organization, will speak on
“Passion and Purpose in Marriage.” I
encourage all married couples and
engaged couples to invest an evening that
will enrich your marriage. Tickets for both
of these events are available after Mass this
weekend and at the parish office.
May God bless you and your loved ones.

on the bottom of the kiosk.
Spiritual Life
Are You Interested In Becoming Catholic?
Do you have questions about the Catholic faith? Have you
been thinking about becoming Catholic? Would you like to
learn more about the Catholic faith without making a final
commitment? The answer to these questions is the RCIA
or Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. It is a process
through which men and women enter the Catholic Church
and receive the Sacraments of Initiation - Baptism,
Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. The process is a spiritual
journey where adults grow in their relationship with God
by learning about Catholic beliefs, practices and teachings
of the church. They get acquainted with the faith
community and participate in public and private prayer,
faith sharing and the observance of feasts, rites and Sunday
Masses.
Our informal sessions meet every Sunday and give you the
perfect opportunity to have all of your questions answered.
Clergy members and trained catechists will meet with you
and walk with you on your “Journey of Faith”.
If you want more information about the process or have
any questions, please contact Barbara Black, at (708) 4669962 or email [email protected]. We look forward to
meeting you and having you join us.
Book Discussion on “Confessions of a
Mega-Church Pastor”
Sunday late afternoon discussions of the book “Confessions
of a Mega-Church Pastor” by Allen Hunt will begin this
Sunday, September 27. Sessions will be on September 27,
October 4 and 18, and November 8 and 22. Each session
will begin at 4:30 PM with a light supper and will be led by
Fr. Jay. The sessions will end in time 6:15 PM Mass. Hunt’s
book speaks to the genius of Catholicism and helps us to
focus on the treasures of our faith. Everyone is invited to
attend as many of these sessions as you are able. Please call
the parish office if you plan to
attend to help us to order adequate
food.
October 16: PRESENTATION
PASSION AND PURPOSE FOR MARRIAGE
On Friday, October 16, at 7 PM, Dr. Allen Hunt, author,
speaker, and collaborator with Matthew Kelly at Dynamic
Catholic, will speak here at St. Stephen on “Passion and
Purpose in Marriage.” Matthew Kelly writes of this
presentation: “You cannot imagine how much better your
marriage will be once you start applying Allen’s lifechanging wisdom to your relationship and life!”
Dr. Hunt’s presentation is described in these words on the
poster for the event: “What’s the most important word in a
marriage? What is really going on in your wife’s head?
What do you wish your husband knew about you? Discover
key ingredients to a healthy and happy marriage at the
“Passion and Purpose for Marriage” event. Take your
relationship to a whole new level.” Tickets for the October
16 event featuring Dr. Hunt and a musical
guest are $25 per person and are available
at the parish office (make checks payable to
“Dynamic Catholic”) or online at
DynamicCatholic.com. We invite you to
join us for this enjoyable and enlightening
evening.
A REQUEST FROM YOUR DEACONS
On October 4, the deacons of Chicago will gather to
celebrate their ministry at their annual St. Francis
Dinner. This event provides an opportunity for our
community to come together in fellowship and an
opportunity to raise the necessary funding to support the
work of the Diaconate Council. Monies raised provide an
education fund for deacons and wives, provide a mutual aid
fund for deacons in need, provide funding for various
charities supported by our community, provide funding to
reduce deacon out of pocket costs to attend community
sponsored symposiums and convocations and provide
operating funds for the Diaconate Council.
Our primary source of income is our annual cash
raffle. Raffle tickets can be purchased for $5 each or a book
of six tickets for $25. Cash prizes are one $1,000 winner,
one $500 winner, two $100 winners and six $50
winners. Tickets can be purchased by mailing a check to
Deacon Chuck McFarland, St. Stephen Church, 17500 S.
84th Avenue, Tinley Park, IL 60487. Check should be
made payable to Deacon Council. If possible, please also
include address labels so we can put them on your ticket
stubs. We will mail your raffle tickets back to you.
We are also in need of items for our raffles, silent and
live auctions. If you have any items to donate, please call
Deacon Chuck 815 464 4760. Please know it is our privilege
to serve the people of St. Stephen and of the Archdiocese of
Chicago. We appreciate your prayers and support. -The

150 White Crosses
Diaper Drive
During October, National Respect Life Month, our
parish and our community will see 150 white crosses at
the parish’s driveway entrances, to honor and remember
1.5 million babies whose lives are lost to abortion every
year in the United States. Each cross represents 10,000
babies, as a way to vividly touch people’s hearts as to the
reality of these wonderful gifts from God. We pray for
an end to abortion and we thank God for the precious gift
of life. Human life is sacred from the moment of
conception to natural death .
Respect Life Ministry will sponsor a Diaper Drive the
weekends of October 17/18 and 24/25 to benefit

age. Celebrate your Catholic Christian faith, meet thousands of youth
gathered on a national level, share beliefs and experience, and recognize
your role in the larger Catholic Church! We will leave 11/19 after
school. We stay in a hotel and attend general sessions and workshops,
listen to great faith music, have mass with over 22,000 people in the
stadium, and work on service. It’s a great way to engage our head, heart,
& hands in our Catholic faith. This trip is a lot of fun! Space is limited,
so if you are interested, don’t delay!

Nie bądźmy zazdrośni
Podczas jednej z misyjnych wędrówek brat Masseo urządził św. Franciszkowi scenę zazdrości, choć próbował ją
usprawiedliwić troską o Franciszka. Brat – nieco podirytowany spytał: „Dlaczego wszyscy cię naśladują? Dlaczego
O bogactwo zabiegają politycy i przedsiębiorcy, ludzie nauki i
techniki, artyści i rzemieślnicy.
Jednak zdumiewa nas i zadziwia postawa Mistrza z Nazaretu.
On jest cierpliwy.
naszą wyłączną własnością, albo kocha kogoś, kogo my kochamy. Jak zatem należy zachować się wobec ludzi
zazdrosnych?
Wielkość ludzkiego powołania należy sprowadzić do miłości.
