April 8, 2014 Hello from the Springfield-Greene County Libraries! A military veteran with a unique message is coming to Springfield April 24, and we're sending a special invitation for you and your members to attend. Cade Courtley, a former Navy SEAL and author of a SEAL disaster survival guide, will be our guest at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at the Springfield Art Museum, 1111 E. Brookside Drive, in Springfield. His visit is part of the Library's Big Read, a celebration of a single, great book. This year's featured title is "The Call of the Wild." We encourage everyone to read the book, talk about it with others and attend the many programs we have planned throughout April. The event is free and open to all ages, so we hope you will bring your friends and families. About Cade Courtley During his nine years of active duty as a Navy SEAL, Courtley led classified, high-risk operations around the world as an assistant platoon commander, SEAL Team Two; and later platoon commander, SEAL Team One . .In his civilian life, he made several television and film appearances, worked as a technical . advisor, stuntman and wrote and a produced screenplay. His background in military Special Operations led him to host and produce the Spike TV/Discovery International 2010 original series "Surviving Disaster" that has aired in over 150 countries. Courtley has returned to his former high-risk profession with several recent tours to Iraq and Afghanistan as a security contractor for a government agency. In 2013 he published "SEAL Survival Guide: A Navy SEAL's Secrets to Surviving Any Disaster," in which he advises, "Learn the SEAL mindset: Be prepared, feel confident, step up, and know exactly how to survive any life-threatening situation."
