MARCH 2015
What’s New This Month?
ast night we had dinner with a great group of French
wine purveyors. They were in from a small southern
town named Carcassone. This is a second generation
family run business and you have enjoyed a few of
their wines in the past few months. The conversation was
spirited as one might imagine with three Frenchman, but
when it came to talking business, everyone buckled down.
You see, they share the same respect and responsibility to
make and sell fine wine as we do to bring you the same. A
responsibility they share to the consumer (for both you and
me) to bring great value to the dinner table.
MARCH 2015
L
am gearing up. Getting
ready. Thinking through
the process. In fact, I am
so far ahead of the
curve on this that I am going to
order Euros now…last year, it
cost $1.42 to buy a Euro, today,
I can buy that same Euro for
$1.13! That is almost 30%
in our favor! In May Sandra
and I leave for France to test
my French and buy some
wine….Seriously, at $1.13 the
food and wine prices will be
very close to prices in the
US…so the trick is now…find
the non-tourist restaurants…
because last year…the best
meal we had in 21 days was in
Budapest Hungary!
I
Paul Kalemkiarian
Owner/Cellarmaster
A group of 129 Southern France wine growers are represented
by this family owned winery and the winery creates
regional and varietal designated wines from these various
sources. They have an incredibly large following around the
world and they make wines of incredible value. The discussion
turned toward “branded” wines versus “great valued” wines.
In other words, you can spend big money on a “branded”
Cabernet from Napa Valley and show off the label (which
certainly has its place in the wine world), or find an equally
impressive Cabernet for one third the price from a winery in
the Central Coast. And when I say “equally impressive”, I
mean just that, a wine that has all the structure and character
that its more expensive “branded” wine does. And this
dichotomy is exactly why Wine of the Month Club and this
French wine company exist; for them to make, and for me
to find these great values. Don’t get me wrong, there is
certainly a time and place for “branded” wines to be set on
the table…if only to show that you spent big bucks for that
occasion, but for the most part….you can get great wines for
much less money through sources like these great folks…
by the way…we had Italian food!

It was here that the Clines
pioneered planting Rhonestyle varieties such as Syrah,
Viognier, Marsanne and
Roussanne. The experiment
was an enormous success! In
2004, the Wine Spectator’s
annual Editor’s Picks issue
named Cline Cellars one of
the 50 Great Producers Every
Wine Lover Should Know.
As the Cline family grew
(they now have seven
children), so did the Cline
Cellars. The couple purchased
land in the Sonoma Coast
appellation where they
p l a nte d
P i n ot

Chardonnay and other classic
California varietals. In 2007,
they opened Jacuzzi Family
Vineyards and The Olive
Press across the street from
Cline Cellars, a stunning
reproduction of the Jacuzzi
family home in Italy.
Jacuzzi Family Vineyards
specializes in Italian varietals
like
M o n t e p u l c i a n o,
Sangiovese, and Arneis. The
Olive Press is an internationally acclaimed producer of
extra virgin olive oils and
balsamic vinegar. Passionate
about history, the Clines also
own and operate Dillon
Beach Resort in northern
California, the Mizpah Hotel
in Tonopah,
Nevada, and
Villa Laura in
the Tuscan hills
of Italy. In
addition, the
busy couple
works on a
ranch and vineyard in the Red
Bluff area of
northern California.
It’s always a treat to feature
wines from a producer you
know and respect. Fred Cline
is one of those guys. He’s
very down to Earth and
as a result highly respected.
He also has made some of
the best wines in California
at down to Earth prices.
I should know, I’ve tasted
literally hundreds of them
and they never, ever
disappoint. This Zinfandel is
no exception. It features
flavors of dark berry, black
cherry, strawberry, spice
notes, and vanilla with a
lasting finish. Pairs well with
charcuterie, gumbo, or
grilled steak especially
when expanded with a
Cognac and black peppercorn
cream sauce.

ak Grove Vineyards
was founded in
1999 by one of our
favorite winemakers, Jeffrey
Dye. Jeff subscribes to the
belief that all the best wines
start by being made in the
vineyard, with a proficient
wine growing team. The
winemaking staff takes great
pride in searching out the
f i n est
g ra p es
f ro m
California’s cool appellations.
Those regions include
Monterey County, Arroyo
Seco, and Paso
Robles.
Viognier is the
aristocratic
white grown in
the Northern
Rhone Valley of
France. It’s a
difficult grape
to grow and
wine to make, but many persevere because the rewards
are too great not to. The
wine can be outstanding as
this offering proves by
providing the subtle lychee
and honeysuckle flavors that
make wine lovers gasp.
As Jancis Robinson explains
in her incredible book, Vines,
Grapes and Wines, the most
interesting thing about
Viognier is that it was almost
driven into extinction. As
recently as 1986 there were
all of 80 acres planted in the
entire world! By the mid1980s almost all of the
officially planted Viognier in
the world was planted in the
Rhône Valley, most of it in
the Condrieu appellation
on the right bank of the
northern Rhône.
As she explains, the terraces
there are so steep and difficult to maintain that these
acres were all that remained
in the appellation. By 2011,
however, Condrieu plantings
had risen to 400 acres
and the variety was known
and often grown virtually
throughout the world of
wine. Part of this renaissance
is due in part to experimental winemakers in California
who were so seduced by
Viognier’s perfume and
exotic spice
component.
To d a y
over
2,000 acres of
Viognier are
planted
in
California which
says a lot about
its
resilience
and charm.
After all that, all we have
to say is welcome back
Viognier. We’ve always been
a fan of this wine and
now more than ever.
Winemakers
complain
bitterly about how difficult it
is to grow with its thin skin
and close clusters making it
susceptible to mold and
mildew. Its finicky side
resurfaces once again in the
winery when it tends to
turn color at the slightest
contact with air. But like the
errant child, it’s still dear to
their hearts and therefore it
is still made. Here’s a classic
with the entire nuance
delivered flawlessly to
match with a crab and
avocado salad.

This wine comes from superstar winemaker, Jeff Dye, of
Arroyo Seco Vineyards in
Monterey. It’s hard not to
feature these wines as they
are released due to the fact
that they stand head and
shoulders
above
the
competition in every way.
It’s not easy to get a Merlot
in the bottle that tastes like
this at his price. Merlot is
one of the most expensive
grapes in California due to
its popularity. Cabernet
Sauvignon still reins as the
king of red wine, but Merlot,
the thinner skinned red
grape that also originates
Bordeaux is still highly
prized. It is in fact said to be
a descendant of Cab Franc.
Dry in style with a medium
to full-bodied palate
presence, Merlot can carry a
bit more alcohol than your
average red wine grape with
levels topping out at 15%
though many California
producers try
staying under
13%.
The
tannin
structure
in
Merlot leans a
l i tt l e s ofte r
and is one
reason why this
particular grape
makes a terrific
blending partner with the
tighter tannic lines of
C a b e r n et
Sauvignon.
Bordeaux, Italy, Australia,
Washington State, California
and Chile are all producing
solid Merlot wine at an
attractive spread of price
points. The classic Merlot
grape originated from the
Bordeaux region of France in
St. Emilion, Pomerol and
Fronsac along the right bank
of the Gironde River. It
typically produces a soft,
medium-bodied red wine
with juicy dark fruit flavors.
Here’s a perfect example
that won’t break the budget.
Medium
bodied
with
beautiful fruit and earth
components that would be a
great match with short ribs
or pork tenderloin.

CLASSIC SERIES
good portion of the
grapes for this
wine come from
Monterey County which is a
grape growing area of
California that is both
gorgeous and unique.
Picturesque in its natural
beauty, it’s an undulating,
natural phenomenon that
begins with the rugged
Pacific coastline to the west
and segues to fertile
valleys framed by ascending
mountain ranges to the
east. These lush valleys
are known for
perfect grape
growing conditions. Abundant
sunshine by
day;
cool,
ocean fog by
night;
and
ancient alluvial
soils give this
region a reputation for producing worldclass wines. These alluvial
soils are finely layered,
very deep, and primarily
recognized for creating
exceptionally inexhaustible,
grape growing conditions.
With farmers who are
finely attuned to this
region’s potential, grapes
grown here have a delicious
flavor profile.

ennywise comes from
our friends at The
Other Guys wine
Company owned by none
other than descendents of
the great August Sebastiani.
Siblings, Mia & August
Sebastiani are determined
to make wines that will
continue their family’s
reputation for quality winemaking for generations to
come. They are building their
company one handshake
at a time, just like their
ancestors and
stepping back
to the early
days when all
wine companies
were
family owned
and operated.
The Sebastiani
family has been
called the First Family of
Sonoma wine. For 100 years,
their saga has been
compelling, even in an
industry dominated by
colorful characters. In 1904,
August's father, Samuele
launched the winery in
Sonoma, after having
emigrated from Tuscany. "I
bought myself a 500-gallon
wine tank and started from
there," August once recalled.
Over the decades, the
winery followed the usual
path: shipping grapes back
east during Prohibition, and
making bulk wine for others.
After Samuele's death in
1944, August and Sylvia
took over.
During the decades he ran
the winery, August built it
into a powerhouse, with
production hitting 500,000
cases annually. In 1975, he
made history when he
became the first vintner in
California to put varietal
wines into 1.5-liter bottles.
But August's health was
declining, and so was the
winery's. In 1977, three
years before he died, August
observed, "We don't want to
become so large that we
lose control of quality."
Yet that is exactly what
happened. By the mid1980s, with jug w i n e s o u t
of
style,
Sebastiani was
struggling. The
next 10 years
would see the
winery
go
t h ro u g h
a
difficult phase
of reinvention
and rediscovery. Now, at the
dawn of the 21st century,
that phase is paying off.
With rich aromas of toasty
vanilla, sugar cookie, and
applesauce, this Chardonnay
is a delight to the senses. On
the palate, tropical fruits
combine with a roasted nut
character from French oak
barrels. A fruity, mediumbody balanced by a bright
acidity transition to a
lingering mouthfeel.
This Chardonnay would pair
wonderfully with an herbcrusted halibut, chicken, or
pork loin paired with a zesty
zucchini and mushroom
side dish. Any tropical or
pan-Asian cuisine would
pair well too: pot stickers
with a soy vinaigrette or
grilled shrimp with a
pineapple salsa on a warm
summer’s night.

utini Wines, makers
of Trumpter, is one of
the oldest and most
celebrated wineries in
Argentina. Its origins date
back to the late 19th century
when Italian immigrant
Felipe Rutini planted his first
vines at what remains the
site of the present-day
winery in Maipú, in the
province of Mendoza. The
Rutini winery was founded in
1885, and has since then
been consistently commended for the outstanding quality
and character of
its wines.
Rutini
Wines
currently owns
estates in five
different areas
of
Mendoza,
including Maipú,
Rivadavia,
La
Consulta, Altamira
and Tupungato,
with a total of 255 hectares
under vine. This diverse
source of vineyard sites
allows them to cultivate
each individual grape
variety in the area that
offers the best suited
growing conditions. Of
particular value is the
source of old vines in the
highly coveted region of La
Consulta,
where
many
believe the best Malbec
grapes in Mendoza are being
grown today. Here their
vines reach ages of
65 years. The concentrated
yields produced by these
vines, combined with
the high altitude, cool air
and intense sunshine in
this region, create grapes
with rich fruit character,
deep colour and smooth,
ripe tannins.
The grapes are sourced from
13 year old vineyards in
Tupungato, 1100 meters
above sea level, Mendoza.
The vines are trained using
the vertical shoot positioning
system and irrigated by drip
irrigation where the soils in
the area are mostly sandy.
Yield is very low which
allows each cluster of
grapes to receive the maximum amount of
nutrients from the
soil. Grapes are
h a n d - h a r veste d
and then 30% are
barrel fermented
which takes places
for seven months
i n 5 0 % n ew
French oak and
50% in second and
third year French
oak. 30% of the
wine goes through
malolactic fermentation.
All this care and precision is
how the finest Chardonnays
in the world are crafted. A
little bit of this, a little bit of
that. Like a recipe, it’s how
you build complexity and
layers of flavor. Aromas of
rich tropical fruit lead into
flavors of citrus fruits
pineapple followed by a
refreshingly crisp finish with
hints of vanilla which are just

of apple, spice, vanilla
and lime zest in a whirlwind
of sensations. This is a
must with steamed clams
bathed in white wine, garlic
and chorizo.

founded by two
cousins that are committed
to bringing to the USA, the
tradition of working with
grapes of Galicia for more
than 200 years. This year
they launched their very
own brand with a delicious a
new line of wines called
Spanish Eye that has an eye
toward quality, drinkability
and price.
Tempranillo is found in
different areas of Spain.
Besides being ubiquitous in
so many areas, it is also
without question one of the
world’s finest varietals.
Tempranillo has ability to
age far beyond its expectations. It is not normally a big,
intense wine so it would be
natural to assume that its
aging potential is limited but
nothing could be further
from the truth. Like similar
age worthy grapes, Pinot
Noir and Nebbiolo, its
Galicia is known in Spain
as the "land of the 1000
rivers". Those rivers cross the
entire region from the
mountainous inland to the
coast. The coast itself offers
great contrasts, from the
smooth beaches of As
Mariñas to the dangerous
cliffs of Costa de la Muerte
or the "coast
of death".
The climate
of Galicia is
tempered,
and is so
especially in
winter, with
m i n i m a l
temperatures
of a b o u t 5 0
degrees. During the
summer season, maximum
temperatures are around 80
degrees. The first cultures
which left their tracks in
Galicia were Celtic and
Roman. But it is their wine
history that brings us to their
wine. Grapes have been
grown here for over 1,000
years so they have a bit of
experience on their side and
it certainly shows.
Our selection is made
exclusively of Tempranillo.
An unctuous wine with a
pleasant
fullness
that
lingers on the palate with
ripe black fruit and licorice
notes with hints of minerals.
This wine is medium-bodied,
complex and perfect with
a foil for filet mignon or
pork tenderloin.

rom the beginning,
Thornton Winery has
utilized skills that has
perfected the blending of
Méthode
Champenoise
sparkling wine and has then
applied these to the new
premium varietal still wines
of 1993. The result: more
awards and medals. Over the
years, some very unique
premium varietal wines have
been added to the product
line. These varietals emulate
classic wine styles of the
Mediterranean and Rhône
regions.
Thornton was
founded
by
John McBride
Thornton who
was
born
and raised in
Long Beach,
California. He
received a B.A.
from Pomona
College and an M.B.A. from
Harvard Business School.
Commissioned in the U.S.
Navy Reserve, he served two
years aboard a destroyer
picket ship off of Korea and
the Formosa patrol where his
final rank was lieutenant.
Thornton Winery favors producing wine that is exciting
for its freshness, bursting
with flavor and showcasing
the distinct characteristics
of the varietals that are
included in the blend. They
use whole cluster pressing,
extensive blending, barrel
aging, and different vinification techniques.
Thornton Winery’s old world
charm and grace are most
apparent when visiting the
winery in Temecula. The
winery, an elegant Frenchstyle chateau overlooking
the graceful vineyards of the
Temecula Valley, highlights
Café Champagne, a breathtaking Fountain Terrace, Herb
Gardens, Gift Shop, and
Champagne Lounge.
Thornton Winery’s Café
Champagne restaurant is a
Four Star Award-Winning
Gourmet establishment
featuring Contemporary
Fusion Cuisine. The winery is
the perfect venue for the
widely popular, Champagne
Jazz concert series, scheduled
from April through October.
N at i o n a l l y
re n ow n e d ,
Contemporary Jazz artists
perform in the winery’s
intimate, outdoor setting.
It has become
the showplace
winery
in
Temecula.
Viognier is sort
of an odd duck
here. There is
very little of it
planted, yet
after tasting this beauty, one
has to wonder why? Its
origins are in the Northern
Rhone appellation of France.
Up until about 30 years ago
Viognier was on its last leaf
and ready to become extinct.
A few small producers in the
legendary Condrieu region
revived it and it has been
flourishing ever since. In the
early 80s a few enterprising
California
winemakers
attained very successful
results with this finicky grape
and are now producing, as
this Thornton will attest,
superb offerings.
Our selection is a Temecula
Valley Viognier. It is an
excellent example of this
popular Rhone-style varietal.
A flowery, perfume-like nose
tempts you to indulge in the
rich honeysuckle flavors and
crisp acidity. Perfect with
spicy Asian, Thai food or
even pizza.

winemaker Jock Harvey are
proud to bring you this
outstanding Shiraz.
From a coastal vineyard
area just south of Adelaide,
this plush Shiraz is all that
Aussie Shiraz should be. It is
fruit forward and boisterous
with notes of mulberry,
boysenberry, blueberry,
prune, black raisin, grilled
fruits, Fig Newton, chocolate
pudding, maple syrup,
spearmint , eucalyptus,
violet, meatloaf and tobacco.
It is rich, port-like almost,
with an intense fruitiness

The finish is long and full of
dark berry flavors. This wine

The vines of
Domain de la

are situated
within
an
immense
forest of scrubland and oak
trees. As a
result there
is an extreme
variety
of
aromas stemming from the
Mediterranean shrubs which
surround the clearings of
vines including rosemary,
thyme, wild mint, strawberry
trees and lavender.
The Fouque Family acquired
the domain of approximately
100 acres in early 2000.
It had been worked on as
a vineyard for several
generations. The acquisition
of this domain coincided
with the installation of a
young agricultural engineer
who also envisages developing the olive growing activity
which already exists and
which was one of the desires
of the Fouque family.
The vineyards, more than
80% situated on the slopes,
are rich in varietals such as
Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre,
Merlot and Carignan and in
the presence of two extinct
volcanoes. The Royal
Convent of Cassan, situated
between the two volcanoes,
is one of the principal
architectural sites of the
Languedoc. Its rich history
starts at the time of
Charlemagne in the 12th and
13th centuries.
Alexandre Fouque was
looking for an exceptional
domain, and finally chose a
domain rich
and diversified
both in terms
of the soil and
the
microclimates. It is
this diversity
of soils, their
exposition
and the microclimates. It is
also this diversity which
leads to the
harvest of the reds taking place
in the month of October,
almost a month earlier than
other appellations in France.
The complexity and finesse
of the Crus de la Tour
Penedesse are as a result of
these cool micro-climates as
well as the extraordinary
balance between the alcohol
and acids.
Our selection is so named
after the grapes that make
up the blend, Grenache,
Syrah and Mourvedre. These
are the typical grapes in the
Cotes du Rhone, particularly
the great Chateauneuf
du Pape. The blend is a
classic and is the reason
for the intense berry, cassis
and spice flavors that
would do well with braised
lamb shoulder with oregano
and mint.

Bronco Wine Company has
become a major vintage
varietal wine source to the
California wine industry and
is currently recognized as the
fifth largest winery and the
largest vineyard owner in
the United States. Though
quite large, their quest for
quality begins with vineyard
development and continues
to grow into areas such as
premium bulk wine contracts,
research and development,
brand development, brand
marketing and national
distribution. Bronco Wine
Company is vertical ly

on crafting wines for the
American table.

Q&A
“How does the weather affect wine from year to year?“
~ R.M., Harrison, OH
There are several factors which affect the character, personality and quality of any wine.
Some of these are the climate, the soil type, the age of the vines, the type of wine, the
aspect of the vineyards, the amount of rainfall, the number of sunshine hours, wind,
pests, trellising and pruning, and last, but far from least, is the winemaker and his or
her artistry and skills. Each grape varietal—and there are over 100 different ones made
into wine—grows best in its own place where these mentioned factors help the grape
to ripen fully with balance and flavor. As you can see, more than weather makes wine.
That said, the weather can make or break a vintage in certain regions such as Italy,
when there is too much rain and the grapes never have time to ripen, or when the
heat burns the delicate skins of Pinot Noir in Burgundy. Making wine is mostly nature’s
miracle. There is a French saying which translates roughly to, “The character of a wine
is determined by its terroir, its place and home, its personality by its vintage and its
quality to its influence of man.”
“Could we have some history about the start of winemaking in California?“
~ K.J., Costa Mesa, CA
Wild grape vines have existed in America before the earliest explorers. Cortés, the
Spanish conqueror of Mexico, ordered grapes to be planted in the “New World”
during the late 16th century. These vines were brought from Europe. In 1769, Father
Junipero Serra, a Franciscan friar, established Mission San Diego and planted grapes
there for sacramental and medicinal wines. The vitis vinifera grape became known
as the Mission grape . As the Franciscans moved north up the coast of what would
be California, they took cuttings from their vines and planted them at each new
mission. Commercial wine production began in 1824, when Joseph Chapman set up
a winery in the Los Angeles area. Later, a Frenchman, Jean Louis Vignes, imported
vines from Europe to start a vineyard in Southern California. During the 1830s,
hundreds of vine cuttings were brought from France to California. This was a boom
for the wine industry. Many Europeans who came to California for the gold
rush stayed to grow grapes and make wine. Among these was a Hungarian,
Count Agoston Haraszthy, who planted vines in Sonoma. He convinced the
governor, John Downy, that winemaking was the future in California. The
governor commissioned the count to visit Europe and obtain vine cuttings. He
shipped 100,000 cuttings to California. In 1874, the vine louse called Phylloxera
ravaged the vines in California and Europe. The louse reached California from
Europe through infected cuttings. Hardy Native American rootstock was used
to save the vineyards through grafting. By the end of the 19th century, the
wine industry began to revive. Cut short again by Prohibition from 1919-1933,
the industry again bounced back with new plantings and enthusiasm,
especially in the 1970s. Today it is at its zenith in terms of production and, most
importantly, quality winemaking.
