Hello to all of our Lord Nelson families!
It is an honor and a pleasure for me to have been
chosen as the new Principal at Lord Nelson
School. I am very excited to be part of this
wonderful community of learners!
To begin, I would like to tell you a little about
myself. I have been an educator in the Winnipeg
School Division for 30 years! I have taught
students in Nursery to Grade 6 at David
Livingstone, Stanley Knowles School and Inkster
School. I was the Vice-Principal at Faraday
School for three years and then the Principal at
Inkster School for the past nine years.
I am passionate about teaching and learning and I
look forward to working with the fantastic staff at
Lord Nelson School in order to help your children
become successful citizens who always strive to
be the best they can be! I pride myself in having a
safe school community where all students are
excited to attend school and have fun learning. In
order for this to happen it is most important that
children arrive to school safely. Please remind
your children that they must cross at identified
Patrol/Crossing Guard intersections for everyone’s
safety. Students are NOT allowed to cross
Redwood or Aberdeen in the middle of the street
to get in or out of a vehicle. For everyone’s
safety, they must walk up to the identified cross
walks and cross with the Patrols/Crossing Guards.
Thank-you for being good role models for our
children and helping to keep them safe.
I have many new faces and names to get to know,
so please help me! Come and introduce yourself
to me so that I can get you know you and your
family! I look forward to meeting you very soon!
Have a great month of March and enjoy your
Spring Break!!
Sandy Intrater
Principal
What a busy month it has been! We gave our
outgoing Principal, Ms. Krosney, a warm farewell.
Ms. Intrater, our new Principal, has stepped into the
helm, and Lord Nelson’s One Big Family continues
to grow and change while maintaining a strong
commitment to our three rules: Be Safe, Be
Respectful, and Be the Best You Can Be!
Our teachers and students are busier then ever with
teaching and learning. February’s I Love to Read
was a huge success! Readers such as Winnipeg
Blue Bombers Chris Greaves, Winnipeg Police
Constable Kevin Chinchilla, Breakfast Television’s
Jeremy John, MLA Melanie Wight, Councilor Mike
Pagtakhan and many other community volunteers
came and read with children in the classrooms.
Check for the combined total of minutes that
students read, between February 5-18th, on page 2.
The reading and writing connection is stronger than
ever at Lord Nelson. We have a Reading Recovery
program in Grade 1.
We are working
collaboratively as a staff with the ideas from the
Regie Routman Writing Residency on our three
journey to be a writing school. Volunteers come
and read with children or have them read aloud. A
walk around the school shows authentic writing
samples, in and out of the classroom. Students are
learning to develop their writing and their first
thinking and turn their work into published pieces.
They are writing for real audiences with a purpose.
Students create shared writing in the classroom,
write in their journals, and in writing centers
throughout the day. The traits of writing: ideas,
organization, writing conventions, word work and
voice have been activated through many strategies
within the classroom from Nursery to Grade 6.
During Student Led Conferences on March 13th and
14th, you will have a chance to view and appreciate
student writing samples and the progress your child
is making in this area. Ask your child’s teacher
how you can support this learning at home.
Consider joining the family book club which meets
once a month in the parent room, and take up
reading with your children as a family work-out!
We look forward to working with families together
to strengthen the home school connection on many
fronts– in reading– in safety– in learning and
developing your child’s full potential!

Vice Principal

I Love to Read 2014
This year our school goal was to read for a total of
130,000 minutes. Our students surpassed this goal
by reading a total of 160,530 minutes! Great job
Lord Nelson Students. The students were awarded a
Gold medal if they read more then 780 minutes, a
Silver medal if they read more then 520 minutes and
a Bronze medal if they read more then 260 minutes.
The top reader of each class won a book. Our top
Primary reader overall was Cynthia from room 20
and our top Intermediate reader overall was Nicole
from room 16. The two girls won gift certificates to
McNally Robinson along with a special breakfast
with Ms. Intrater and Ms. Karlinsky. Each day of I
Love to read was celebrated with fun activities like
sports day, pyjama day and backwards day. We also
had many guest readers come in and volunteer their
time to read to classrooms. Thank you to all guest
readers!
Top Readers Cynthia and Nicole!
Please Remember:
When arriving at the school in the morning while
O’Canada and daily announcements are on, please
stop where you are and wait for all to finish.
Students and Parents moving through the halls at this
time create a lot of noise and distraction. We begin
O’Canada around 9:00 a.m. so please be mindful and
have students here for 8:55 a.m.

Lord Nelson School’s igloo is finally complete. Thank you to all families who took the time to send in milk
jugs. Altogether we collected over 400 milk jugs to help build our fabulous igloo! Rooms 7,20 and 21 took the
lead in building this great structure for all of the school to share. We hope you all enjoy it as much as we do!
This past month Grades 1 and 2 have been learning a lot of games that transfer from different body percussion
parts to instruments. This helps skills by working as a large group and taking turns. Students have also been
improvising-making up music in the moment with out planning first. This helps to develop thinking skills
across different parts of the brain and gives the students the opportunity to explore their creative expression.
Grades 3 and 4 continue to work diligently learning the recorder and have made amazing progress! Everyday
that we meet for music I am impressed by their enthusiasm for learning this new instrument and their positive
attitude is evident in their playing. Ask your child what five steps they are taking to play with the most beautiful sound possible.
Grades 5 and 6 have also spent some time this month reviewing their recorder skills from last year and for
those starting the recorder we have covered the fundamentals of playing a new instrument. They have also
been working on getting ready for our field trip to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s ‘Adventures in Music
Concert’ on March 25th. Students are learning about the pieces of music they will be hearing to enrich their
concert-going experience. Notes went home in February regarding this trip and permission forms are due on
March 7th.

CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 13 SHOULD NOT BE ON FACEBOOK!
Respect the minimum age guidelines of social-networking sites. If you are willing to let your child have
profiles on social-networking sites such as Facebook, set them up together. Children under the age of 13
should not be on Facebook. Know their passwords. All social-networking should be monitored by
parents at all times.
Students at Lord Nelson in Grades 3-6 learn about Social Media in school. We use Cyber Bullying: A
Prevention Curriculum for Grades 3-5.
This is a five session curriculum to raise students’ and parents’ awareness of what Cyber Bullying is.
This program strives to:
♦
Raise students’ and parents’ awareness of what cyber bullying is and why it is so harmful
♦
Equip students with the skills and resources to treat each other respectfully on Social Media
♦
Give students information about how to get help if they or others they know are being cyber bullied
♦
Teach students how to use online technologies in positive ways
What is Cyber Bullying?
Cyber Bullying is bullying through email, instant messaging, in a chat room, on a web site, or through digital
messages or images sent to a cellular phone. Incidents often happen at home at any time of day or night.
Social-networking allows for individuals or groups to be verbally abusive through website posts. These
incidents happen outside of the school setting. They have an impact on your child's learning in school.
Teach your children appropriate use of computers and cell phones. Limit your child’s access to websites and
computer use.

Bookmark appropriate sites for your children to visit. Make a rule that these are the only sites they can
visit online. If they want to visit a new site, they must check with you first.
Limit your child’s online time to less then one hour a day.
As your children move into the tween and teen years, consider adding monitoring software. Monitoring
software allowed you to view the sites your children are visiting and also allows you to review chat
sessions and comments they are posting on social-networking sites. You can also view the history of
sites visited.
Make sure children know to keep their password private, sharing only with parents.
Keep the computer in a central place where you can observe what your children are doing.
Teach your children how to communicate appropriately. Explain how easy it is for messages to be
misinterpreted. Discuss how rumors get started on the Internet and the importance of avoiding gossip.
Remind them it is not okay to respond to a message if they are feeling angry or upset.
