Is a Catholic community of faith
striving to witness to the Gospel.
Our Baptism and Confirmation
calls us to bring Christ’s Love to
our families, our work places and
our community. Grateful for
God’s gifts, we seek to nurture
those gifts and to give back to the
Lord by sharing our time, talent
and material treasure. In all of
our parish activities we seek to
develop a personal relationship
with the Lord who directs our
lives and a vision that sees the
world with the eyes of Christ and
that leads to a commitment to
justice. We seek a sense of unity
in Christ that leads us to be an
open and welcoming people and a
sense of joy in being graced by
the gifts of God’s Love.

D
ear People of St. Stephen,
Today’s gospel proclaims that
wonderful story of the Prodigal
Son. This week’s theme in our Lenten
program – “the joyful homecoming” – is
reflected in that story. The key figure in
the story, the Father, is the God figure
who continually reaches out to his sons
and wants them to share in the joy of his
table. We can learn from each of the
characters in this story.
Think of the father. What does the father
in the story teach us about God? God is
the loving father – loving to a foolish
degree in the minds of many of the hearers
of this parable – who desires all his
children to share the joy of his table. God
extends forgiveness to all who return to
Him. His love is reflected in Jesus who
reached out to and ate with sinners and
outcasts.
Think of the younger son. Most of us are
probably able to identify with him at some
time in our lives. Perhaps we have not
fully turned away from God, but we have
at times been less than what God would
have hoped from us. Yet God always
reaches out in love to the younger son in
each of us.
Think of the older son. We can likely find
times that we identify with him – feeling
that we didn’t always get everything we
should have, feeling bitter and resentful.
Still the father reaches out to him. He
exclaims that everything he has is his and
that he is deeply loved, with the father
sharing his very life with him. Yet the
older son also has to accept that the
father’s generous love goes out to all.
“Living the Eucharist” offers an excellent
spiritual reflection this week that can help
us to apply this parable to all who are
coming to Mass. As you come to Mass,
imagine Jesus, like the father in the
parable, waiting to greet you and to share
a life-giving meal with you. When you
arrive Jesus is there to greet you lovingly.
He accepts with compassion and healing
the sorrow for our sins that we express in
the penitential rite. Then imagine yourself
as a child listening at Jesus’ feet to His
word in the Scriptures. In Scripture we
hear the stories of God’s love for us.
As the gifts are brought up to prepare for
the celebration of the Eucharist, imagine
Jesus accepting the gift of your life symbolized in the bread and wine – in His
loving hands. As the priest prays the
Eucharistic prayer, Jesus offers our gift
together with the gift of His own life given
on the Cross to the Father.
like the younger son, turn honestly to
Him.
Pray that we can see each Mass as a joyful
homecoming when we celebrate the love
of God’s family with the Lord who is the
source of that love.
Today I also want to congratulate the
young people who received the sacrament
of Confirmation this Saturday. Their
names appear elsewhere in the bulletin.
All of us join in congratulating them and
their families and praying that the Spirit
may continually guide them throughout
their lives, helping them to live as mature
followers of Jesus.
On another topic, I invite you to join us
next Saturday for the annual St. Joseph’s
dinner. The dinner has always been a very
enjoyable evening. Tickets are available in
the narthex today.
May God bless you and your loved ones.
Fr. Jay
As you receive communion, see the gift of
the Eucharist as a way that the Lord tells
you that you are precious to Him. Though
we are not worthy, Jesus like the father in
the Prodigal Son story, is always loving
and accepting of us, asking only that we,
Augustinians’ Inaugural Gala...The Augustinians of the Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel have
faithfully served the Church in the Midwest since 1905. On Friday, April 26, the Solemnity of Mary, our Mother of Good Counsel,
the Province’s Patroness, they will hold their inaugural gala with a reception and dinner at the Hyatt Regency, 151 East Wacker
Drive, Chicago, IL. Individual tickets are $250; couples $500; tables (8) $2,000, and special tables of honor start at $2,500.
Program book ads and sponsorships are also available. The proceeds will benefit retired and infirmed Friars, new seminarians and
vocations outreach and the Augustinians’ Peruvian missions. Francis Cardinal George will be the special guest that evening. The
Friars would be very grateful if anyone interested in attending or sponsoring the event would call Ms. Becky Schmitt at 773-595-4008
or Michael Gerrity at 773-595-4035, or email [email protected]. Thank you and God bless.
Congratulations to these St. Stephen parishioners who will receive the Marian and Spirit Alive girl scout religious
medals at Holy Name Cathedral this Sunday:
Maeve Collins, Danielle Gentile, Maryclare Leonard, Gabrielle Marino and Meghan Mullin.
We congratulate them and their group leaders on their award.
The Praise Band will lead the music at the 11:30am Mass next weekend.

Lent is a call not
just to “give up
something” but
more important to
“give something for the poor.” Wherever you
live in the parish, there are poor families
within walking distance of your home. When
in need, they ring the rectory bell. They are,
in effect, ringing your doorbell. Your gift in
the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box will help
the poor to celebrate the grace of God’s love
this Easter.
Easter Family
Dinner Opportunity
In the spirit of Saint Vincent de Paul and our founder, Blessed
Frederic Ozanam, we would like to offer an Easter dinner to
any parishioners who are in need. We know economic
conditions have affected some of our parish families: some
parishioners may be burdened with medical expenses,
unemployment, unforeseen household expenses, auto repairs
that weren’t in the budget… whatever the reason may be.
Jesus shared the Last Supper with His Apostles when He
instituted the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, and we would
like to share with you! We give thanks to all of our generous
parishioners who have helped to make this possible. If you are
an interested parishioner, please contact Deacon Ken at the
parish office at 708-342-2400 ext. 136 or by email
[email protected] by March15.
May God BlessYou and Your Family,

Stewardship Spotlight
Stewardship is a lifestyle in which we gratefully acknowledge the gifts of time, talent and treasure God has given
us and generously return them. By doing this we enhance our relationships with God and with each other.
Stewardship is a conversion of the heart – a way of life that is Christ centered and not self centered.
The mission of our Stewardship Ministry is to advance the understanding and appreciation of the Spirituality of
Stewardship. This group supports the continuation of the Lord’s work through prayer, communications with
other ministries, ministry sign-up fairs, the sharing of their time and talent and the encouragement of all parishioners to do the same.
Meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
If you are interested in learning more about this ministry, please contact Deacon Joe at the parish office or email him at
[email protected]. Please consider sharing your God given time and talent with your parish community.

“No longer was there manna for the Israelites, who that year ate of the yield of the land of Canaan.”
(Joshua 5:12)
Throughout the forty years that the Israelites journeyed through the desert, God provided them with manna to eat. As soon as they
were able to enjoy the fruits of the Promised Land the manna ceased. Likewise, God’s blessings to us may change over the years but
it is important to trust that God will always provide us with all that we need.

Generosity Prayer
Create in me a new heart, O Lord.
Teach me to be generous ,
as You have been generous with me.
Teach me that all I am and have are gifts from You.
And gifts, Lord, are meant to be shared.
Nourish me with Your Eucharist.
Show me the joys of generosity.
Help me to understand that others, perhaps unknown to me,
depend on me for help.
Remind me that my world, my parish,
need “Good Samaritans” to heal the wounds of our times.
Make me a gift to others in Your name.
Amen.

Tips for How To Show Your Parental Love
Use non-violent forms of discipline. Parents should instruct both rewards and restrictions many years before adolescence
to help prevent trouble during the teenage years. Allowing children of any age to constantly break important rules
without being disciplined only encourages more rule violations.

Kocha i czeka
Dziś mamy o wiele więcej marnotrawnych ojców niż synów. Jako dopełnienie tematu powrotu, Kościół zaproponował
nam dzisiaj lekcję o wejściu Izraela do ziemi obiecanej.
chlebami przaśnymi i ziarnami prażonymi.
wrócić do Ojca?
słowami: wróć do mnie, kiedy będziesz dorosłym człowiekiem, a wtedy będę cię kochał – wtedy będę twoim ojcem, zaś
ty będziesz moim synem. Ojciec taki zniszczyłby w ten sposób istotę ojcostwa i synostwa, rozdeptując ziarno nasienia
teraz, gdy jestem dorosły, gdybym nie widział Go kochającego wtedy, gdy byłem niemowlakiem w wierze, gdy byłem
dziecinny w swoich pragnieniach grzechu, gdy byłem jak nastolatek uparty i zarozumiały. Co z tego wynika? Bardzo
ważny wniosek: Bóg kocha nas nawet wtedy, gdy jesteśmy zupełnie niedojrzali do powrotu, nawet wtedy, gdy
gdzie iść, wracamy do Niego.
Kocha nas i czeka.
A skoro kocha, to i cierpi. Czyż to możliwe? Kto by mógł coś takiego zapisać, że Bóg cierpi z powodu naszego
oddalenia?
Jaki
ojciec by nie cierpiał, widząc własnego syna w chlewie? Chyba tylko marnotrawny!
