2 EUROPE.
Since anriquity there’ s been four routes in Europe to Santiago di Compostela, crossing in
Roncisvalle. The most crowded road to Santiago has been the French-one for centuries. Il
It’s start on the Pyreneees, with two access point, in Roncisvalle (Navarra) and in Somport
(Aragona). These routes get together in Puente la Reina and - through La Rijoia, Castiglia
and León, they arrive in Galizia.
The orginal road is subjected to changes over and over again because of the building of new
roads, the opening of highways and the allotment of lands but there’ s no risk to get lost
because the signage is very clear and understandable. The Road is showed by big yellow
arrows and by milestones on which a yellow shell on a blue blackground is drawn. After
Jerusalem and Rome, Santiago di Compostela is the third religious destination in the world.
Since 1987 the Road to Santiago and its itineraries has been included in the “Europan
Cultural Itinery” and since 1993 in the UNESCO World Heritage, that’s way it’s a very
special journey not only for devout followers … a journey to have at least once in a lifetime!

the pilgrims on the Road,
and a kit to change bike
inner tubes.
Only in the bigger towns
we’ll could find bike and
tyre shops, so you must be
100% equipped.
It’ recomended also to
drink a lot of water,
because of the
expenditure of energy
required by riding so many
hours every day : we
suggest you to bring
almost two bottle
cages and to take in some
dietary supplements and
mineral salts (it’s better to
buy them in your country
because it’s difficult to
find well-stocked shops
along the Road).
In a new town, it’s a good
idea to visit the local
tourist info point, where
it’s possible to take maps
for free.
