SISTERS OF CHARITY
Consecrated Life and Saint Agnes Parish
We Sisters of Charity of Our Lady Mother of the Church
(SCMC) have been privileged and blessed to have served in
Saint Agnes Parish and School for the past ten years. From
the first warm welcome and offers of help; through the spirit
of solidarity in working toward authentic Catholic aims; to
the many heartfelt farewells already expressed, we can only
thank God for His abundant goodness and pledge our grateful prayers for all in return, indeed a small return for such a
great gift.
We consecrated souls have already received the mysterious,
humbling, and amazing gift of a call to a closer following of
Christ, a more intimate union with Him, rooted in Baptism,
and one which draws us to surrender our lives to Him in
love. Every vocation story is unique; through God’s particular love for souls, we are each called and truly empowered to
generously pour ourselves out for Jesus in others.
Pope Francis dedicated this year for those in Consecrated
Life, in thanksgiving for God’s gifts -- joy, surrender, and service of love; to invite shared reflection, and to challenge us to
renew our dedication. We do need your prayers and we
commit ourselves to pray for you, especially since our vocations in the Church are mystically united, in Jesus Christ.
Although “Christ proposes the evangelical counsels [which
we religious profess]…to every disciple [emphasis added],”
the perfection of charity, to which all the faithful are called,
entails” for us consecrated persons the obligation of chastity,
poverty, and obedience, through our profession of these
counsels (Catechism of the Catholic Church #915.)
In Vita Consecrata (#15), Pope Saint John Paul II develops this
idea of the grace of consecrated life: “But those who are called
to the Consecrated Life have a special experience of the light
which shines forth from the Incarnate Word. For the profession of the evangelical counsels makes them a kind of
sign and prophetic statement for the community of the
brethren and for the world…”
We Sisters happily hear our sainted pope later exhort: “By
virtue of their dedication lived in fullness and in joy, consecrated women are called in a special way to be signs of
God’s tender love toward the human race and to be special
witnesses to the mystery of the Church, Virgin, Bride, and
Mother (#57) and “…the future of the new evangelization…
is unthinkable without a renewed contribution from
women, especially women religious (ibid.)” This echoes
Saint Teresa of Avila’s rhetorical remark: “What would
become of the world if there were no religious?” (Autobiography Chapter 32, 11).
As Father mentioned here in the month for life (Jan. 25,
2015), “Larger families help with vocations to the religious
life and priesthood.” We depend on all generous families
to continue religious vocations.
God is love. Pascal said, “The heart has its reasons of which
reason knows nothing.” Therefore, in accepting this temporary sorrow of separation, as we leave Saint Agnes, we
manifest to God our trust in His infinite wisdom and Divine
Providence, as our SCMC founder Msgr. John Zwyzen often
proclaimed. This is the way of Consecrated Life and
Christian life. John Henry Cardinal Newman wrote, “To
live is to change, and to be perfect is to have changed often.”
We believe that God never would remove anything good
from our lives unless he had already planned something
much better. This is our faith.
God bless you always, all ways.
Mother Marie-André Wilson, SCMC

CHORALE & ORCHESTRA NOTES
Mass: Joseph Haydn, Theresienmesse (1799)
Offertory: W. A. Mozart, Church Sonata in F, K 145 (1774) The
Theresienmesse was composed by Haydn in the summer of 1799
as one of a series of six Masses requested annually by his patron, Prince Nikolaus II Esterhazy to celebrate the name-day of
his wife, Princess Maria Hermengild (1768-1845), at the
Prince's chapel in Eisenstadt. The autograph score of this Mass
bears the simple title Missa. The nickname, Theresienmesse is
thought to have originated after a performance in the Viennese
court chapel in which the soprano soloist was Empress Maria
Theresa, wife of Franz II, who was also the soprano soloist in
both of Haydn’s oratorios, The Creation and The Seasons,
composed during the same period. The other five Masses composed by Haydn during this period are the Paukenmesse (1796),
Heiligmesse (1796), Nelsonmesse (1798), Schöpfungsmesse (1801),
and Harmoniemesse (1802). All of these Masses are in the Chorale’s repertory and all but the Schöpfungsmesse were presented by the Chorale this season. The Twin Cities Catholic
Chorale is a non-profit corporation, financially independent of
the Church of Saint Agnes and the Archdiocese of St. Paul &
Minneapolis, which depends solely on the generosity of its
contributors. For more contribution options, and the current
schedule of Masses, please visit www.catholicchorale.org.
