The action starts with two talented cooks going head-to-head in a culinary battle using an ingredient of Bobby’s choice, in front of a studio audience, and a rotating cast of special guests—whose goal is to pick the challenger with the skills to potentially Beat Bobby Flay. The winner proceeds to round two for the ultimate food face-off against Bobby – but with an advantage: the contender makes their signature dish, and Bobby has only minutes to come up with his own interpretation of the dish. After a blind taste test, a panel of judges ultimately decides if the challenger has the chops to Beat Bobby Flay or if Bobby’s food reigns supreme. Learn more at: FoodNetwork.com/BeatBobbyFlay 4 “the future of print” in last month’s foldout issue? I could say that the key phrase was “print is not dead yet.” But actually, several advertisers wanted a booklet, so we re-invented this thing for them as 157Guide. Of course, then they reneged on their promises. No matter, here it is anyway—happy now? But truth be told, many of our readers have told us that they liked the fold-out version better. So. Enough on that… Let’s talk about St. Patrick, the patron saint of the Irish (and those that try their darndest to be). The college lads and lassies get to celebrate on Friday and Saturday, the 7th and 8th this year. Expect the usual local IUP haters and student-economy deniers to be out in full force to try to spoil the party; but hopefully they won’t get too much in the way of people having a harmless good time on a religious holiday. Townies have the parade on the 15th; and die-hards like me will be sure to down some Guinness on the actual holiday on Monday the 17th. As I say every year, please play Irish music in the bars—the jukeboxes are loaded with it. After all, what’s Christmas without the holiday tunes, or Halloween without the screams and creaks? —Sláinte mhaith! r “Sunrise, sunset, quickly fly the years…” —Fiddler on the Roof MARCH 2014 March highlights include: PUB CRAWL101 & THE FUNNIES on page 6 MOVIES This month’s feature films and release dates Multiple IUP band concerts, Ballet Hispanico, Glengarry Glen Ross, Billy Jean King, Exhibits, Pens, March Madness & Bucs pre-season, Lots of TV premieres, Movies, Mardi Gras and St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, Elmo, a Beatles tribute, and much more. FOOD & DRINK Indiana’s #1 Dining Guide BEERMAN’S CORNER Featured beer of the month CLASSIFIED QUOTE OF THE MONTH: “May you have the hindsight to know where you’ve been, The foresight to know where you are going, and the insight to know when you have gone too far.” ― —An Irish Blessing CONCERTS CROSSWORD Western PA live shows and events All Content © 2014 157GUIDE/157LIVE Available online at 157GUIDE.com 157GUIDE.com5 Indiana Pub Crawl 101 T A CHEAP leisurely Friday Afternoon frolicking downtown hose of us who study and/or work hard at the daily obligations, that those who enslave us profit on; feel we have earned the right to get inebriated. For after all, they underpay us, over-charge us for practically everything, force us to pay obscene interest rates, over-tax us, send us to fight their wars, and generally treat us like crap. So the hell if we’re not going to selfmedicate and deaden a few brain cells every now and then for a few hours of escape. Besides, the last time I checked, this was a “government of the people, by the people, for the people,” not some corporate-fascist dictatorship. But enough on that. Here are some suggestions for having a good old time boozin’ it up in Indiana. And if you have a problem with that, I suggest you stop reading. by TC “I GOTTA GET OUT OF HERE!” St. Patty’s Extra... 6 Friday afternoon 3:30 p.m. Get a jump on the weekend and start early… First stop is Boomies Bar. You can get a draft mug any time for $1.25, and also smoke ‘em if you got ‘em. While they might be watching TV, they don’t care if you play the jukebox. Remember, most of these bars are yours for the taking—meaning if you come in with a half dozen or more people, you become the party. They have food there now, so if you need a base, grab something. Tally: 2 beers $2.50 + tip (Boomies 2) 4:15 p.m. Head up Philly Street to Spaghetti Benders. The bar side is usually empty this time of day. They’ve got a $5.99 pitcher deal (divided by three = $2pp). Down a draft each and jaywalk across the street. Tally: 3 beers $4.50+ (Spag. Benders 1) 4:30 p.m. Enter Grubs. If you haven’t eaten yet, they’ve got fish, fries and a roll for six bucks (perfect for Lent). You can also split a pitcher or two here (depending on how many of you there are) or buy an ice cold draft. Tally: 4-5 beers $7.50+ (Grubs 1-2) 5:15 p.m. In the old days you would go to Al Patti’s, but they don’t do the early drinkin’ and smokin’ thing anymore. Instead, hike up to The Coney’s back bar. They’ve got a $2.25 BL pint special, and if anyone hasn’t eaten yet, get a Coney Dog. The smokers can light up now. Tally: 6-7 beers $12+ (Coney 2) Note: You are probably now legally drunk. 6:00 p.m. Now cross the street to Culpeppers. Even though you may be legally too drunk to drive, depending on your weight, you’re probably not visibly intoxicated. So, have another draft—it’s happy hours! Tally: 7-8 beers $14.50+ (HBC 1) 6:20 p.m. Since it’s still daylight, you shouldn’t have any problem with getting busted for walking—one of the crummiest fines ever created by wacko civil servants. Anyway, make your way up and over to Twisted Jimmy’s and grab a beer. Tally: 8-9 beers $18+ (TJs 1) 6:45 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Now take Water Street down to The Brown Hotel just before their happy hours end (at 7). Sometimes they have live music; otherwise their house system usually cranks out some good tunes. Tally: 9-10 beers $20+ (Brown 1-2) Congratulations, you made it. If you still feel up to it, wander down to Brunzie’s and/or up to Al Patti’s, Cosumel or go back to Spaghetti Benders for pasta and Karaoke. A dinner with coffee or water will extend your sobriety. Be sensible. Total: 10-12 beers < $25.00 + food & tips Staying within the PA legal limit of 0.08 If you are a male weighing 160 lbs. and you consume 3 12oz. drinks in an hour your BAC is 0.06; however, 4 drinks in 2 hours is 0.0726 (close to the limit). Your BAC goes up with each additional drink. Eating food and walking helps, but slowing down works best. MARCH 2014 see ad pg. 26 by Tony C P YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH! ut down your little pet for a moment—yeah, that ridiculous thing that you take with you everywhere you go—the paper weight, hockey puck, Antikythera mechanism. Now, point and laugh at the others fondling theirs—hunched over and idiotically thumbing away. How dare I criticize those awesome devices? Well, think about it, the iPhone® was announced in 2007—less than seven years ago. And how everyone has become so intimate with those things (in public) in such a short period of time is bizzare. Anyway, for those of you who are still with me, here’s another reality check: there are too many restaurants and bars in this small borough. What he say? It would be different if this was a city; but it’s not, it’s a tiny hamlet in the middle of nowhere; where people identify more with Pittsburgh. Sad, but so true. “But it’s a college town,” you exclaim. Horsepuckey! I say. Everybody knows that the town and campus mix like oil and water. Plus, IUP keeps expanding their food services for students—hell, even KCAC is doing dinner events now. As far as the “bar wars,” or the battle for drinkers, every tavern is going after the same thousand or so over21’s that imbibe outside of the house parties. Which, if you do the math, means that only a few of places can ever rock on any given night. That said, it would surely be a lot nicer if there were more variety besides the DJ/drink specials nights, karaoke, sports on TV, and the same handful of bands playing at any bar that will underpay them. Dream on… Actually, to be fair, there are many exceptions; but this article isn’t about the ones that get it right. Let’s get back to dining out… Having choices is one thing, but dozens of restaurants serving the same food items is as bad as the delusional “upscale” restaurants that over-charge the fakers and phonies for meager portions and second rate ambiance. It’s ironic isn’t it? The one thing that you can count on is that several places will close in 2014. It happens every year, and it should come as no surprise. Remember Madres, The (previous) Train Station(s), Coy’s, Philly Street Café, 701 Café, R&P Café, 5 Guys Burgers, CiCi’s Pizza, Taters, Fire Mountain, Sloppy Joe’s, Quizno’s, Murphy’s II, Sgro’s, the old Boomerangs (in between), Mitchell Brothers Bar-B-Q? Those who fail this year will be the ones who put themselves and their regulars ahead of cultivating new customers. The joints that take too long to serve. The over-lit rooms with uncomfortable seats and no music. Some of these rooms call to mind the Jim Morrison line: “we have assembled inside this ancient and insane theater.” There’s also the crappy restrooms, and the establishments with bogus and clueless, self-centered management who think they know how to run their businesses, but fail horribly, and wonder why people don’t show or ever return. Had enough? Me too. —Cheers and good luck! 157GUIDE.com19 157 INDI ANA DI NI NG GUIDE Dining guide listings are editorial content. © 2014 ADVERTERIA/157GUIDE/157LIVE - All Rights Reserved. Kenly and Tracy Levitz U ntil now, we thought Old Bay Seasoning was about the only thing Baltimore had going for it. That was until we met DuClaw Brewing Company, the little operation that just grew -- and outgrew its brewpub origins. The Maryland brewer has a fervent fanbase and it’s hard to keep up with demand. Especially after an online men’s magazine introduced its chocolate peanut butter porter, the best-selling Sweet Baby Jesus, to an international audience. Within a month of relocating production from a brewpub to its own facility, DuClaw was operating at capacity and forced to add tanks. Twice. But fear not, quality does not suffer for quantity. Owner Dave Benfield told the Baltimore City Paper that, despite all the love for Sweet Baby Jesus, DuClaw Visit Beerman’s Corner on: “A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it’s better to be thoroughly sure.” is still trying to create a brew to top it. DuClaw expanded into the Pittsburgh market late last month with bottles that include Sweet Baby Jesus itself. Local aficionados will also want to welcome these other drinker-friendly DuClaw offerings to the neighborhood. • The mild and agreeable (despite its NSFW name) Bare Ass Blonde, an American Ale with fruity notes •the English Brown Ale, Euforia which is nutty, chocolate-y and easygoing for a dark beer •HellRazer, the obligatory IPA that manages to be sweet and light • Serum, an American Double IPA that also has a simple and subtle hops presence As mentioned, DuClaw is new to the area. Look for it in your favorite bottle shop. If you haven’t been to The Brown in a while, Stop Down and See All of the Changes. -Free Smoke > LUNCH SERVED 11-2 Tuesday-Friday Wi-Fi $ New Menu—featuring… $ 1 OFF DRINKS 5 1/4 lb.
