Boring robotic *sheeple wandering around like zombies awaiting commands, following the crowd and doing the same things over and over (and expecting different results). *Sheep + People = Sheeple On one hand, I want my steak to be seasoned and cooked like it was before, and my beer to be cold with a nice frothy head. But on the other hand, in life, I expect creativity… Astound me every now and then. Take a little extra time, go the extra mile—change the dynamic. How about a paradigm shift? It’s easy to be sheeple; it’s hard to be human. Those who can break free of the current mob mentality will succeed in the coming years. Those who jump on band-wagons and follow trends will find themselves without a chair when the music stops. And, yes, this thing is a magazine now.… Here’s to great issues ahead! For a college town with a median age of 22, the live music scene is barely surviving on life-support… t’s been a long time since we had an album recorded here, like The Vestich Brothers, Live at Wolfendales (back in the ‘70s), or a band like The Clarks playing in a bar like Culpeppers (back in the ‘80s & ‘90s), or IUP’s TEN bringing in top name talent (back in the ‘90s & ‘00s), or even the 5,000-seat capacity Kovalchick Complex doing bands like Stone Temple Pilots, Steve Miller, Gregg Allman or Widespread Panic—like they did on their opening season. ¶ Sure, there’s the occasional lower tier country or hip-hop show, but when it comes to national talent, Indiana is being out-booked by places like Greensburg and Johnstown. —Sorry guys, “professional” wrestling doesn’t count. ¶ But it’s not just the big shows that we’re lacking, it’s a music scene in general. ¶ There’s certainly no shortage continued on page 9 e A to Z 13 Stories 80s Dance Rock, Hair Metal 5 member electric band Recent appearances: Ironwood Grill, Dingbats (no bands now) Website: 13storiesrocks.com Tom Angelo Acoustic guitar Recently at: Grubs, The Brown Aultman Brothers 5-member plus; folk, bluegrass, country The Brown, Maudie’s Sixers, Ironwood, Notorious Gig, Our Place, Dingbats facebook: AultmanBrothers Baby In A Cage 2+ members (incl. You can regularly see a live act at a lot of places—albeit small rooms—like The Brown Hotel, The Ironwood Grill, Spaghetti Benders, Wolfies, Bob’s Sub (at lunchtime), The Artist’s Hand Espresso Bar, Benjamin’s (patio), The Coventry Inn and Quality Inn (Red Zone). Boomies and Twisted Jimmy’s also have bands once in awhile, but they’re mostly DJ-driven. Dingbats no longer has bands. The Indiana Theater is starting to get active, but they need to promote more; and chop down that tree in front of their marquee. The Coney has a nice space upstairs where they’ve brought in bands like The Six and The Bastard Bearded Irishmen; and while they were great shows, the attendance could have been a heluvalot better. Meanwhile, nearby similar size places like Pikel’s and The Backyard have brought in national acts and sold out. Last year I spent 1000 on juke boxes because half the places I walked into were quiet. $ ¶ Anyway, after going through that litany of places doing bands, it’s clear that the potential for a music scene is here. It’s just that in its current form, it’s completely unorganized, greatly underpromoted and generally out of control. ¶ When they do have music… one week a bar has a country band, the next week it’s a hip-hop DJ, the following week it’s a classic rock cover band, and the next week it’s an acoustic act. There is a total lack of uniformity, and never any national talent. Bars book bands based on price, and if they don’t “bring in a crowd” the first time, they’re not invited back for a second. I know of acts that only get paid a pitiful $50, $150 or $300 (that’s a big night). Now granted some local bands do suck; but others are well worth double or even triple what they get now. e (724) 357-8822 563 Philadelphia St. SpaghettiBenders.com 4.99 Pitchers All Day Every Day! $ Homemade Daily Features BEST KARAOKE IN TOWN FRIDAYS EAT-IN T TAKE-OU WATCH THE GAMES IN OUR LOUNGE band list continued music scene continued… A music scene isn’t dependent on a place, a band, the audience or the media—it’s dependent on all four. If we want more quality entertainment in town, it’s going to take a concerted effort by all of us. Clubs need to stop trying to please everybody all of the time, and carve out a niche for themselves (the same goes for the bands). ¶ There are over 10,000 people over 21 in Indiana (and that doesn’t even include the students). There are enough people of varying musical tastes to support a rock bar, a country bar, a jazz club, a folk/bluegrass joint, an alternative bar, etc… There’s no need for everyone to copy what everyone else is doing. We need some creativity and see-it-through-ness. ¶ What bands need to do is to expand their repertoire to include songs that give the audiences goosebumps—not put them to sleep. Also, don’t count on the clubs alone to promote your gig, people need to be re-inforced and reminded. Spread the word, pass out fliers, email your schedule to us. Don’t just rely on social media—it’s overrun with twits who post, but don’t show. Try guerilla marketing. ¶ Another thing I’d personally like to see are “house bands;” or at least more regularly performances at the same place. People dig having a regular night out that they can plan on (and know what to expect). ¶ Fans need to support live entertainment… Turn off the flat screen, game console and tablet PC and get out of the house. Don’t just “like” a band on facebook, get really social and like them in person. ¶ With all the bands around the area (see list), this town should be rocking; but instead, half the people don’t even know what a band plays or when they’re playing. ¶ Look, we’re trying our best here by publishing the band list and offering free event listings and cheap ad space; but you gotta help by sending us your schedules (on time). Check out the monthly calendar on page 16—use it! ¶ We’re all in this together. Competition is one thing, but what we have now is friggin’ nuts. ¶ I’m looking forward to a great summer of music and a kick-ass concert season this fall. And 157LIVE is in for whatever it takes to make it so… What about you, your band, your venue? Looking to Book National Acts? This year saw major changes in the qualifying process. Previously, horses were able to secure a place in the gate based on graded stakes earnings from over 180 races worldwide. That system was scrapped this year in favor of a simplified point system. The first four finishers in each of 36 prep races are awarded points with the top-scoring horses going to the Derby. Sprinters (usually the longest of the longshots) will have a harder time qualifying as the majority of preps are longer, “two-turn” races. Another outcome, and an unfortunate one, is that it will be nearly impossible for a filly to get in—races restricted to females are not included. ¶ Two weeks later comes the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes in Maryland. The Preakness will see some changes, too. It has been reported that Kegasus, the infield’s beer-swilling mascot, will probably not be in attendance this year. The sauced centaur inspired a “Bring Back Kegasus” Facebook page which, as of press time, had garnered exactly 2 likes. Basic Betting Options Win—$2 minimum wager on a horse to finish first. Place—$2 minimum wager to finish first or second. Show—$2 minimum wager on a horse to finish in the top three. Exacta—$2 minimum wager to pick the winner and second-place finisher, in that order. Trifecta—$2 minimum wager to pick the top three horses in order. Superfecta—$2 minimum wager to select the top four finishers in order. MAY 2013 see ads pages 3& 31 by Tony C Ironwood Grill ‘s Steaming-hot Steak Fajita T he fifth of May commemorates the Mexican’s army’s defeat of French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. In the U.S. it’s become more like a St. Patrick’s Day for Mexican Americans and others looking for an excuse to have yet another day of bacchanalia with a theme. Like all ethnic celebrations, Cinco de Mayo is full of sights, sounds, tastes and drinks—unique to the holiday. For the uninitiated, it means Tacos, Nachos, Salsa and Margaritas; but there is so much more Mexican cuisine to explore… First, if you plan to make a whole day of it, start the morning off right with a Mexican Frittata. It’s more or less an omelet made with scallions, chopped cilantro, Oaxaca cheese and topped with sour creme. For lunch you have a lot of choices… Burritos (chicken, ground beef or steak, rice, refried beans, onions and cheese wrapped in a tortilla). Then there’s Enchiladas (kind of like a burrito), Tamales, Tacos or Taco Salad, or Quesadillas (folded tortilla filled with sausage [andouille or chorizo], cheeses and chopped scallions served with salsa). After lunch there’s no time for a siesta, it’s time for drinking Mexican beer… Pacifico, Corona, Negra Modelo, Modelo Especial, Victoria, Dos Equis, Carta Blanca, Sol or Tecate. If you’re having more than one, I recommend a Sol or Corona Light with the obligatory lime. Also, keep a basket of nacho chips and salsa with some guacamole handy to absorb some of the alcohol—especially if you plan to have a shot or three of tequila! For Dinner, you gotta try a sizzling hot Steak Fajita (flank steak, peppers and onions, garlic, jalapeno, chipolte, cilantro served with Spanish rice and black beans with a side of tortillas). If you’re not into steak, have one with chicken instead. Now it’s probably time to bring out the Margaritas… Hopefully you found a place that’s playing some Mexican music or has a Mariachi Band to take you into the night. In Indiana, we’re fortunate to have several authentic Mexican establishments. Cosumel on Philadelphia Street, Madres a little further up the block, and Tres Amigos on Oakland Avenue near Martin’s. Cosumel and Tres Amigos have bars. I’ve eaten (and drunken) at all three and would recommend all three. You might also want to check out the Ironwood Grill’s Fajitas and Burrito Bar. Other places in town will be celebrating of course—it’s Indiana. So dress in the colors of the Mexican flag (green, white and red), don your sombrero and poncho, if you’re adventurous, and have fun. —Viva Mehico! Calling All Beer Lovers to Reporting & Drinking Beer in Indiana & Beyond ! Visit Beerman’s Corner on: by Samuel A. Kenly Finally the weather has broken and the sun is shining. The bad news is, now I have yard work to do. The good news is, that as an adult of legal drinking age, my labors will be rewarded with something a little more sophisticated than a Hug or popsicle. Smirnoff Pouches (what I like to call the “Adult Capri Sun”) are malt beverages that come in three different flavors: Blue Raspberry, Cherry Limeade and Strawberry Lemonade. Not just for the ladies and at 5% alcohol, they make for a refreshing option whether entertaining on the patio or slaking one’s thirst after a hard day’s work on the “Honey Do List.” Just freeze and squeeze. These bad boys (I know) are ready after a few hours in the freezer without the mess of ice, blenders and whatnot. You can find Smirnoff Pouches at most local six-pack shops and distributors in Indiana. “A fine beer (malt beverage) may be judged with only one sip, but it’s better to be thoroughly sure.” See Calendar on page 16 for Beer Samplings ROGUE CHIPOTLE ALE Oregon brewery, Rogue raises a glass to Juan de la Cueva a 16th century Spanish dramatist who managed to be both revolutionary and mediocre. Rogue tells us the poet and playwright once wrote of a Mexican dish that combined both beer and seedless chipotles. Thus bringing us to Rogue Chipotle Ale, by Tracy Levitz based on their own American Amber Ale but spiced with its namesake peppers. Promising “a malty, smoky aroma and smooth, crisp flavor,” this award-winner pairs well with pork and poultry and also may be blended with Rogue Chocolate Stout for a “Mole black and tan.” Ole! The new “Pay As You Earn” plan allows you to pay only 10 percent of discretionary income (anything over 150% of the poverty line, or $16,755). And, after 20 years of consecutive payments, the loan is forgiven. So if you make $ 28,500 a year, your monthly payment would be around $98; which goes away in 20 years. You save half or more if you earn less until you’re 40. Hell, you can get by (and have fun) on $2,375 a month. Of course, you don’t need a college degree to earn that. 2-3 avocados 1 oz. of crisp bacon 1/2 cup favorite salsa 1/2-1 chipotle pepper Lime juice (1/2 lime) Instructions: Mash avocados in a bowl with a fork and then mix in everything else.¶ If you’re careful when extracting the avocado meat (use a spoon around the edges), you can use the shells as serving bowls.
