ight now, most of the students are not here.
And, for some people, that means less business
(and less fun)—not to mention—some long-awaited
peace and quiet. The peace and quiet part I agree
with, the other stuff is hogwash… I can prove that
this whole “semester break downturn” is an urban
legend and a self-fulfilling prophecy.
There is certainly not less to do (just look at the
stuff in this magazine); or is there any logical reason
for a big slump in sales (unless you sell textbooks or
those triangle college flag banners).
Indiana demographics—by the numbers:
The (non-student) population of Indiana
(borough) is around 14,500+ (most recent census
estimate). If you don’t count the under 18 or over 65
(sorry—we still love you), there are approximately
12,000 permanent residents. Nearly half of them
are between the age of 21 and 49. The median
age is around 22, and annual retail sales per capita
are $16,000+.
So, more or less, for every college student,
there is a “local.” The average person lives within
15 minutes of downtown. For retailers, restaurants
and service companies—there are more educated,
employed, affluent adults (in the prime of their lives)
living in Indiana, than there are students. Meaning,
basically, that the only reason the “townies”
don’t frequent local establishments that much,
is that they’re not being asking to (in 157LIVE).
It is said that insanity is doing the same thing over
and over and expecting different results. Think

or those caught up in the Sushi craze,
you’re in for a treat… Yet another player
has entered the arena; namely, Fortune
Buffet (in the old Fire Mountain building).
They’re calling it Indiana’s largest buffet
with over 200 items—which includes
Japanese, American and Chinese food.
It’s a huge space with a “wall of water” feature, spacious buffet area and plenty of
comfortable seating. Check out their ad on the
back cover for more information.
Moving right along, if you’re a
pork lover—guess what? The
legendary Clem’s ribs, pulledpork subs and hog wings are now
available at Boomies Bar.
The pigs are prepared at
Clem’s Cafe in Blairsville and driven up
piping hot.
Yeah, I know, Boomies the restaurant?
Well, actually, it’s not such a stretch; the
same ribs were sold by the old Kangaroos.
For now, you can get the food on
Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays starting
around 5:30 p.m. Though they plan
expanded dining hours in the Spring.
Now if you’ve never been to Boomies
early, some of the “regulars” at the bar are
a bit eccentric. But they’re pretty much
glued to their bars stools; so just walk past
them to the food counter. You also might
want to bring your own hand-wipes.
Of course, you can also get racks of ribs
at other Indiana restaurants, like Grub’s
and the Ironwood—to name just two.

Coney and H.B. Culpeppers for hosting our

Barking Squirrel Lager, a
5% ABV craft beer, arrived
in the US this past fall from
Moosehead
subsidiary,
Hop City Brewing Co. of
Brampton, Ontario. The
first Hop City recipe by
brewmasters Kevin Gray
and John Gagliardi, it’s an
amber lager with a distinct
and rich burnt orange color.
Barking Squirrel is noted for
a slightly sweet yet clean taste.

Yes, you will detect hops but
the flavor is subtle and
well behaved (despite the
intense little fellow holding
a hop on the label). Try
this lager with pizza, BBQ
and spicy dishes such as
fajitas. Barking Squirrel is
also a fine accompaniment
to breaded and deep-fried
calamari. Named the Best
Standard Lager at the
2011 World Beer Awards
and a recipient of two
gold medals at Monde
Selection in Brussels,
Belgium, Barking Squirrel
is available at most Indiana
six-pack shops. Bonus trivia:
