Bacchanal 2015 will be held Saturday, November 7 in PAFA’s Samuel M.V. Hamilton
Building and will include wine tastings, silent and live auctions of unique items and travel
destinations, a gourmet dinner, and dancing. Hugh Hildesley of Sotheby’s, New York,
will be the auctioneer for the evening.
BACCHANAL IS PAFA’S FLAGSHIP WINE AFFAIR,
RAISING OVER $550,000 ANNUALLY.
SINCE BACCHANAL’S INCEPTION, THE EVENT HAS

TO HELP FUND PAFA’S STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS.
In the weeks preceding Bacchanal, a series of exclusive gourmet winemaker dinners will
take place in private homes, each pairing a distinguished winemaker with a local celebrity
chef. Bacchanal has been consistently recognized as the premier wine and auction event
in the Philadelphia region. In 2010 Haute Living Magazine cited Bacchanal as one of the
FIVE BEST GALAS in Philadelphia.
PAFA IS AUTHORIZED TO HOST BACCHANAL BY
THE PENNSYLVANIA LIQUOR CONTROL BOARD
AND IS GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED BY PRESENTING SPONSOR,

THOMAS JEFFERSON AWARD HONOREES
The Antinori Family
MARCHESI ANTINORI
The Antinori family has been involved in the production of wine for over six centuries, ever
since, in 1385, Giovanni di Piero Antinori entered as a member, the “Arte Fiorentina”, the
Winemakers’ Guild of the city of Florence. During this entire long period, through twenty six
generations, the family has always directly managed this work with courageous and, at times,
innovative decisions, but always maintaining, unaltered, a fundamental respect for tradition and
for the territory in which they have operated.
Today the firm is run by Marquis Piero Antinori with the support of his three daugthers,
Albiera, Allegra, and Alessia, directly involved in the work of the house. Tradition, passion, and
intuition have been the three driving principles which have led the Marquis Antinori firm to
become a leader in Italian wine.

Antonio Michael Zaccheo
CARPINETO
Son of Carpineto co-founder Antonio Mario
Zaccheo, Sr., Antonio has been immersed in
Italy’s rich wine heritage since birth. Antonio is
the latest in a long line of Zaccheo winemakers,
blending old world heritage with new world
experience in his approach.
Antonio spent much of his youth working
in viticulture, winemaking and olive oil production at the Carpineto estates throughout
Tuscany. Antonio first worked in the US with
Minneapolis-based multi national Cargill Inc, before beginning as V.P. Chief of Operations at
the Wente Vineyards portfolio of wineries in 1997, based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Antonio returned to Tuscany after several years in the States to join his family and begin
expanding Carpineto’s presence in key world markets. Spending much of the year touring many
of the 70 countries in which Carpineto wines are currently sold, Antonio relishes his time in
Tuscany and remains closely involved with operations.
Antonio holds a Bachelor of Science degree (Magna Cum Laude) from San Francisco State
University, an MBA from the University of California at Davis and speaks five languages.
Dott. Federico Carletti
POLIZIANO
As Marquis Piero Antinori likes to repeat: “ancient roots play an important role in our work,
but have never been a limit to our innovative spirit”. The Marchesi Antinori firm expresses its
passion for viticulture by a constant search for even the smallest areas for quality improvement.
For this reason, continuous experiments go forward both in the vineyards and in the cellars,
seeking new clones of local and international grape varieties, experimenting cultivation
techniques, vineyard altitudes, fermentation practices an temperatures, modern and traditional
fermentation methods, different types of oak for aging and different sizes and age for the
casks and barrels themselves, and different aging times before their commercial release for the
bottled wines as well.

“My family’s first contact with the world of
viniculture was in 1961 when my father, Dino
Carletti, bought 22 hectares of land in the
Comune of Montepulciano. He planted the
first specialty vineyards in the region. At the
end of 1980, challenged with the economic
crisis and the decline in consumption, I
took on the challenge of directing my own
company, bringing to it a modern production
philosophy based on my personal vision of
agriculture. Passion for the art of making wine
immediately took hold and inspired me to learn
about advanced international techniques of
viticulture and oenology. My objective for the future is to consolidate the distinctive character of
the wines that will be produced from all our vineyards. To this end, I am dedicated to a continual
and passionate search for every opportunity to improve the quality of Poliziano’s wines and
create the best expression of our Terroir.” —Federico Carletti

Marc Vetri |

CEO
Marc Vetri is the chef/founder of Philadelphia’s critically acclaimed Vetri Family of Restaurants.
In addition to his storied career in the kitchen, Marc is also the driving force behind the Vetri
Foundation for Children, a non-profit, charitable organization whose mission is to help kids
experience the connection between healthy eating and healthy living.
A Philadelphia native, Marc initially pursued a career in music as a guitarist before realizing his
true passion came from cooking. Spending his formative professional kitchen life in Bergamo,
Italy, working alongside some of the region’s most noted chefs, Marc has become known the
world over for bringing a bold, contemporary sensibility to classic Italian cooking. In 1998, he
and business partner, Jeff Benjamin, opened the eponymous, fine-dining restaurant, Vetri,
to universal acclaim. Vetri’s outstanding pastas, innovative flavor combinations and artful
presentations captured imaginations and propelled Marc to the culinary forefront. Within two
years of the restaurant’s debut, he was named one of Food & Wine’s “Best New Chefs” and
received the Philadelphia Inquirer’s highest restaurant rating. In 2005, he was given the James
Beard Award for “Best Chef Mid-Atlantic.”
Following years of continued success at Vetri, Marc launched Osteria in 2007. Larger and more
casual than Vetri, Osteria’s menu of traditional Italian thin-crust pizzas, homemade pastas and
wood-grilled meats and fish quickly won over the dining public. The restaurant was nominated
for “Best New Restaurant” in 2008 by the James Beard Foundation. In 2010, it helped earn
Vetri Family chef/partner, Jeff Michaud, the James Beard Award for “Best Chef Mid-Atlantic.”

The Vetri Family’s third restaurant, Amis, opened its doors in 2010. Inspired by Rome’s
neighborhood trattorias, this smaller but energetic restaurant specializes in small plates such as
handcrafted pastas and house-cured meats. Alla Spina, an Italian gastropub opened in 2012. It’s
been recognized by publications such as GQ and Zagat as being one of the top craft beer havens

in the U.S., making it a must-visit destination for beer connoisseurs of all levels. The following
year saw the debut of two more Vetri Family restaurants: Pizzeria Vetri, and a second location
of Osteria in Moorestown, NJ, the group’s first restaurant outside of Philadelphia.
Marc is the author of Il Viaggio di Vetri, a collection of more than 125 of Vetri’s most-requested
dishes. His second cookbook, Rustic Italian Food, brought artisan cooking into home kitchens
and was named one of the top cookbooks of 2011 by such outlets as Bon Appetit, St. Petersburg
Times and The Huffington Post. In addition to his cookbooks, Marc’s writing can be found on The
Huffington Post where he is a regular blogger.
Outside of his restaurants, Marc is deeply passionate about giving back to the community,
in particular his hometown of Philadelphia. In 2009, he and Jeff Benjamin created the Vetri
Foundation for Children. The foundation’s signature initiative, “Eatiquette,” is a school lunch
improvement program in which children experience the connection between healthy eating and
healthy living. Additionally, Marc and Jeff are the founders of the “Great Chefs Event,” which
brings together scores of the country’s greatest chefs to raise money and awareness for the
pediatric cancer charity, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.
Ieff Michaud |
Culinary Director, Partner
The Executive Chef and co-owner of Osteria Restaurant and Amis Restaurant, Jeffrey Michaud
began his cooking career at the age of 13 in a pizza shop in New Hampshire, where he was raised.
Inspired by the cooking and beautiful wedding cakes made by his grandmother, Jeff attended
the Culinary Institute of America and graduated in 1998.
Upon graduation, he moved to Aspen, Colorado to join the kitchen staff at the Caribou Club,
where he worked his way up to Executive Sous Chef. After he completed his tenure in Aspen,
Jeff moved to Philadelphia to work for critically acclaimed Chef Marc Vetri at Ristorante Vetri
as the Sous Chef. Discovering his love for Italian cooking in Marc’s kitchen, Jeff decided to
further hone his skills by moving to Bergamo, Lombardia, Italy.
Brad Spence |
Culinary Director, Partner
Brad Spence developed his passion for food as a little boy cooking with his mom. It wasn’t long
before he decided he wanted to make a career of it and began working in small kitchens as a
teenager, prior to entering the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park to formalize his
studies. While at the CIA, he worked at the Fifth Floor in San Francisco under Chef George
Marrone. Upon graduation, Spence moved to New York to work for Tom Colicchio at Craftbar
and Mario Batali at Casa Mono.
In 2006, Spence relocated to Philadelphia to take the helm at Vetri. While working for Marc
Vetri, Spence has traveled to Italy to gain experience at Ristorante Loro and Taverna Colleoni
in Bergamo. In his first full year as chef de cuisine, Spence continued to hone his skills in Italian
food production, having helped construct a curing room so that all cured meats at both Vetri
and Osteria are made in-house. His culinary leadership helped promote Vetri as one of the top
Italian restaurants in the country.
Brad became chef partner at Amis, located in Washington Square at 412 South 13th Street.
Amis’ menu is seasonally driven and specializes in small plates such as handcrafted pastas and
house cured meats. In November 2010, Bon Appetit named Amis one of the top 10 places for
pasta in the country.
• 14 •
His first stop was working at a family owned butcher shop, Mangilli, in the province to refine his
skills in meat fabrication, sausage, and salame making. Over the next three years, Jeff worked
his way through the top restaurants of Bergamo, including Michelin starred Frosio and La
Lucanda, as well as La Brugheria, Ristorante Loro and Ol Fa Pasticceria. His travel through
Bergamo culminated with the position of Executive Chef at Locanda del Biancospino, a small
inn in the foothills of the Alps.
After serving as the Opening Chef, Jeff returned to the United States and took several chefs’
positions throughout New England before returning to Philadelphia and rejoining the Vetri
team to open Osteria. In 2008, The James Beard Foundation nominated Osteria for “Best
New Restaurant” and in 2010, Jeff won the James Beard Award for “Best Mid-Atlantic Chef.”
He lives in Philadelphia with his wife Claudia, who is expecting their first child in the spring. Jeff
is a current member of the Vetri Foundation for Children’s Board of Directors. He is extremely
committed to the Foundation’s mission of supporting the development of healthy living habits
and styles in young people.
In the summer of 2010, Jeff joined Marc Vetri in working with the ESF Dream Camp, a fiveweek day program for at-risk children in Philadelphia. While remaining within the federal
guidelines for government subsidized school meals, Jeff and Marc designed menus, prepared
locally grown and freshly made lunches daily for campers. A special emphasis was placed on
social interaction and communication, which was done by conducting all meals in an interactive
family style manner.

PENNSYLVANIA ACADEMY OF THE FINE ARTS
MISSION
PAFA promotes the transformative power of art and art making.
VISION
PAFA will inspire the future of American art by creating, challenging, cultivating, and celebrating
excellence in the fine arts.
HISTORY
Founded in 1805 by artist and scientist Charles Willson Peale and other civic-minded artists and
business leaders, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts is the first museum and school of fine
arts in the nation. Peale’s intention was to create a school and accompanying gallery focused on casts
of antique sculptures as well as contemporary and European art where American artists could receive
training and study current work. Nearly every major American artist has taught, studied, or exhibited
at PAFA. The institution’s world-class collection of American art continues to grow and provides
what only a few other art institutions in the world offer: a rare combination of a world-class museum
and an extraordinary faculty known for its commitment to students and for the stature and quality
of its artistic work. More than 200 years later, PAFA continues to carry on its traditions of studying
the figure through rigorous training grounded in the teachings of Thomas Eakins and the great
European art academies. In 2005, it received recognition for its educational endeavors through the
National Medal of Arts, bestowed upon the Academy by the President of the United States.
THE COLLECTION
PAFA’s collection has been described by scholars and collectors as one of the three finest American
art collections in the world. The collection continues to grow and includes major works by many
distinguished American artists as well as Academy faculty and alumni, both current and historic. The
permanent collection ranges from colonial masters such as Robert Feke, John Singleton Copley,
and Benjamin West, to major contemporary artists including Alice Neel, Helen Frankenthaler, Leon
Golub, Betye Saar, H.C. Westermann, Jim Nutt, Adolf Gottlieb, Richard Diebenkorn, Red Grooms,
and Faith Ringgold. PAFA was the recipient of the Harold A. and Ann R. Sorgenti Collection of
Contemporary African-American Art (2005) and the Art by Women Collection, Gift of Linda
Lee Alter (2011). Many of the nation’s most important artists were founders, teachers, or students
at PAFA, including Charles Willson Peale, William Rush, Thomas Sully, Thomas Eakins, Thomas
Anshutz, Mary Cassatt, Cecilia Beaux, William Merritt Chase, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Charles
Grafly, Maxfield Parrish, Robert Henri, John Sloan, William Glackens, Everett Shinn, George
Luks, Violet Oakley, Arthur B. Carles, Daniel Garber, and Robert Gwathmey _ all of whom are
represented in PAFA’s collection.
SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS
PAFA is a recognized leader in organizing exhibitions of historical and contemporary American art
that are innovative, engaging and scholarly. Recent major exhibitions include The Artist's Garden:
American Impressionists and the Garden Movement, 1887–1920; David Lynch: The Unified Field;
Beyond the Paint: Philadelphia’s Mural Arts; KAWS @ PAFA; Jennifer Bartlett: History of the Universe,
Works 1970-2011 and The Female Gaze: Women Artists Making Their World.

INFORMATION FOR BIDDERS/
CONDITIONS OF PURCHASE
PRICING
PAYMENT AND PICKUP
The dollar figures shown on almost all lots are an educated guess of a reasonable value; anything less is
a bargain. In almost every instance where donors or wineries have indicated values or retail prices, the
dollar figure is reflected.
1. Payment for all auction lots on November 7, 2015 shall be made that evening following the
conclusion of the auction.
AUCTION PROCEDURES
1.Neither the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Bacchanal nor Sotheby’s, Inc. [“The
Auctioneer”] is responsible for the accuracy of the descriptions of auction lots contained in this
catalogue. The descriptions incorporate, in some instances, material or descriptions furnished by
donors. In particular, prospective bidders should inspect wines contributed by individuals prior to
bidding and make their own judgment with reference to the quality and value of such wines.
2. Any trips or events comprising all or part of an auction lot shall, unless otherwise specified in the
catalogue description, be subject to convenient scheduling by the lot donors and the successful
bidder. Expiration dates are generally noted in the package description. Unless otherwise noted,
all auction items and services must be used within 12 months of the auction.
3. All wine is sold on an “as-is” basis, and neither the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts nor The
Auctioneer make any express or implied warranty or representation of any kind or nature with
respect to any property included in an auction lot.
4. The Auctioneer shall have the absolute right to withdraw any auction lot, reject any auction bid,
resolve any dispute with reference to any auction lot or any bid on an auction lot at any time
before the fall of the hammer. No bid is valid unless acknowledged as such by The Auctioneer.
5. All wines sold at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Wine Auction are subject to the
provisions of Pennsylvania law and the regulations of the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue.
6. Bidding on the lots offered at the silent auction on November 7, 2015 shall conclude at 9:30 p.m.
that evening.
7. Any property may be withdrawn by the Auctioneer of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts
at any time before the actual sale without any liability therefore.
8. The Auctioneer and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts reserve the right to reject a bid
from any bidder. The highest bidder acknowledged by The Auctioneer shall be the purchaser.
In the event of any dispute between bidders, The Auctioneer shall have sole and final discretion
either to determine the successful bidder or to reoffer and resell the item in dispute. If any dispute
arises after the sale, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Wine Auction’s records shall be
conclusive in all respects.
2. Full payment must be made prior to removal of any auction lot.
3. All payments must be made in cash, by cashier or certified check, or by VISA, Discover,
MasterCard, or American Express. Company or personal checks will be accepted only upon
submittal of identification and credit responsibility satisfactory to the representative of the
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts responsible for accepting payment.
4. Successful bidders in the live and silent auction are required to pay for their lot the night of the
auction. Payment for separate lots under one bidder paddle number will be combined.
LOT REMOVAL AND/OR SHIPMENT
1. Lots purchased at the silent or live auction must be picked up and removed by successful bidders
following payment at the conclusion of the auction, unless other arrangements for delivery
or pick-up are made. Purchasers are responsible for costs associated with alternative delivery
methods.
2. The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts shall not be responsible for any lots left at the

BOTTLE SIZES
Wine comes in all manner of containers, from clay crocks to collapsible plastic bags. Fine wines,
however, come mostly in bottles, which vary widely in shape, size, and color. Most bottles are made
of glass: white wines generally come in clear glass and red wines in dark green glass, although there is
no absolute rule. Shapes vary as well and range from the straight-sided, high-shouldered bottle used
for Bordeaux wines, Italian Chiantis, or Valpolicellos and for most Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlots, to
the slope-shouldered bottles used for Burgundy, Beaujolais, and Rhone wines, Italian Barolos, and most
Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. There are also longer, more slender bottles used for German Alsatian wines
and for some U.S. bottlings of Chenin Blanc, Riesling, or Gewürztraminer. And there are many other
variables—again, there is no rule.

BOTTLE SIZE VARIES AS WELL. The following guide to bottle sizes and barrel or case quantities may
be helpful in determining on how much wine you are bidding.
Half-Bottle375 milliliters (ml); one-half of the standard bottle size. Sometimes referred to as a “tenth.”
Bottle750 milliliters (ml). This standard size is equivalent to 4/5ths of a quart,
sometimes referred to as a “fifth,” as in a fifth of a gallon. Champagne bottles
are slightly larger because they have thicker glass, but they also contain 750 ml.
Un’AstaSilenziosa
SILENT AUCTION
MagnumEquivalent to two bottles, or 1.5 liters (L) of wine.
Double Magnum
Three liters of wine, the equivalent of two magnums or four regular 750 ml bottles.
JeroboamWhen referring to sparkling wine, a jeroboam normally holds three liters or
four regular bottles. When referring to still wine, a jeroboam equals five liters,
or 6.67 bottles.
Rehoboam
Not often seen, this oversized bottle holds approximately 4.5 liters of wine,
about six 750 ml bottles.
Imperial or
Methuselah
Both bottles hold six liters of wine, the equivalent of eight regular bottles. They
are shaped differently, and the Methuselah is normally used for sparkling wine.
SalmanazarHolds about nine liters of wine, the equivalent of 12 750 ml bottles.
BalthazarHolds 12 liters of wine, the equivalent of 16 750 ml bottles.
NebuchadnezzarThe granddaddy of them all, this designation refers to a very large bottle that
normally contains 15 liters (twenty 750 ml bottles) of wine, but can vary above
or below that size.
Case
A case of 750 ml bottles normally contains 12 bottles; a case of magnums, normally
six; and a case of half-bottles, normally 12 or 24 depending upon the winery.

ALEXANDER VALLEY 2011
Winemaker Notes: Our 2011 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a harmonious
and vibrant wine. This full-bodied, classic expression of Alexander Valley Cabernet
in a cool vintage has a bright ruby-red color with purple undertones. The nose exues
aromas of black cherry, cedar and black olives. On the palate, its dried herb, cocoa
and lavender flavors are framed by dusty tannins and a savory texture. The wine
finishes with lively acidity and a lingering persistence. Given proper cellaring, this
wine should give drinking pleasure through 2029.

ROUND OF GOLF FOR THREE AND LUNCH AT MERION GOLF CLUB
Championship golf and champion golfers have long been intertwined with the
mystique of Merion Golf Club’s East and West Courses. Designed by Hugh Wilson,
Merion’s East Course has played host to more USGA Championships than any
course in America and is home to some of its greatest moments. From Robert Tyre
Jones, Jr.’s completion of golf’s elusive Grand Slam at the 1930 U.S. Amateur to
Ben Hogan’s awe-inspiring performance and now legendary one-iron on the 72nd
hole during the 1950 U.S. Open, the sculpted greens, fairways and treacherous
bunkers of Merion have shaped the game.

THREE MAGNUMS – SPANISH WINE
2001 CVNE Compania Vinicola del Norte de Espana ‘Imperial’ Gran Reserva
The 2001 Imperial Gran Reserva has a more complex, better defined nose than
the 2000, with black cherries, spice and Seville orange marmalade. The palate is
medium-bodied, with fine tannins cloaked in sweet dark cherry, bitter orange and
strawberry fruit. (RP 94)
2001 La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva
Dark ruby-colored with a garnet rim, it displays a lovely nose of Asian spices,
incense, tobacco, balsamic, and blackberry. On the palate it has exceptional depth,
layers of spicy black fruit, excellent ripeness, and an elegant personality. (RP 96)
2004 La Rioja Alta Rioja Viña Ardanza Reserva 2004
Cedar, tobacco and spice hints frame dried cherry, berry and vanilla notes in
this silky red. The flavors mingle nicely, framed by juicy acidity and light but firm
tannins. (WS 94)

EIGHT BOTTLE MONDAVI VERTICAL, 2005 – 2011
2005 – This is a beautiful 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve from Mondavi. The wine,
a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc, has a youthful, opaque
bluish/purple color and a classic nose of lead pencil shavings, crème de cassis, licorice,
and subtle, toasty French oak. Some chocolate also makes an appearance. (RP 95)
2006 – The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve offers a beautiful perfume of violets,
black currants, and subtle oak, lead pencil shavings, and spice characteristics. This fullbodied, creamy textured Cabernet possesses superb concentration, lovely purity, and
a multilayered mouthfeel. (RP 94)
1.5L BANFI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2004 (ST 93)
2007 – The full-bodied, powerful, pure 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is
another outstanding effort revealing notes of spring flowers, toasty oak, creme de
cassis, licorice, and graphite. (RP 95+)
1.5L BANFI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2008 (ST 91)
2008 – The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is a big wine loaded with black fruit,
cedar, licorice, grilled herbs and tar. Layers of flavor build effortlessly to the muscular,
virile finish. Despite its size, the 2008 Reserve maintains elements of classicism that
serve to balance some of the wine’s more extroverted leanings. The wine impresses for
its depth, expressive inner perfume and beautifully integrated tannins. (RP 95)

4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc) exhibits a dense purple color, more tannin,

soil characteristics. (RP 95)

accents lend the flavors tension and traction. Drink now through 2029. (WS 95)

VALUE: $300
SIX BOTTLE VERTICAL – CHÂTEAU DE BEAUCASTEL,
CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE, RHÔNE, 2006 – 2011
2006 – Medium to deep garnet colour. Pretty perfume of freshly crushed raspberries
/ blackberries with nuances of wet leaves, cinnamon and white pepper. The medium
to full bodied palate provides a good concentration of juicy berry fruit countered by
medium to high acidity and a medium level of velvety tannins. Wonderfully balanced.
Long finish with notes of white pepper. 13.4% alcohol. Drink 2010–2030. (RP 94)
2007 – Beaucastel’s 2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape has turned out even better out of
bottle than I predicted. An inky/ruby/purple color is followed by a glorious nose of blue
and black fruits, truffles, pen ink, licorice, and meat juices as well as glorious levels of
acidity and sweet tannin, buttressing the fruit’s fabulous freshness and vibrancy. This
full-bodied effort still displays considerable tannin, no doubt because of the relatively
high Mourvedre content. It should resolve its tannins in 2-4 years, and last for 25 or
more. (RP 96)
2008 – The 2008 Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape is one of the few outstanding
wines produced in this vintage. More evolved than Beaucastel’s wines tend to be, it
reveals a healthy dark plum/ruby color, notes of licorice, meat juices, smoked game,
black currants and garrigue, medium to full body, silky tannins, good freshness,
surprising depth for the vintage and a long finish. Drink it over the next decade.
(RP 90)
2009 – The 2009 Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape is reminiscent of their brilliant
1985. It will be one of the rare Beaucastels that is drinkable upon release. Made
from this estate’s classic blend, it possesses soft tannins as well as a silky, open-knit
seductiveness, a dense plum/purple color and a beautiful perfume of smoky Provencal
herbs intermixed with grilled steak juices, garrigue, kirsch and blue as well as black
fruits. The wine is full-bodied, unctuously textured, and silky smooth (the latter
characteristic being somewhat atypical for a young Beaucastel). If it performs like the
1985, it will drink well young and continue to do so for 25 or more years. (RP 94)
2010 – Interestingly enough, even though many of the 2010 Perrin et Fils selections
from the southern Rhone were scheduled to be bottled right after my visit, the 2010
Beaucastel had already been put in bottle. This is a gorgeous wine, a classic blend of
30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise and the balance the
other permitted varietals in the appellation. Deep purple, with loads of bouquet garni,
beef blood, blackberry, kirsch, smoke and truffle, this wine is full-bodied, rich and
showing even better than it did last year. I still think it needs 3-5 years of cellaring, and
it should last for 25-30 years, as most of the top vintages of Beaucastel do.
(RP 95)
2011 – Reminiscent of a lighter weight 2009, the 2011 Châteauneuf-du-Pape
offers up a sweet bouquet of spiced black cherries, plum, truffle, saddle leather
and underbrush. Coming from tiny yields (which were down 50% from 2010), this
medium to full-bodied 2011 is gorgeously textured and has solid mid-palate depth,

THREE BOTTLE VERTICAL OF QUILCEDA CREEK CABERNET
SAUVIGNON COLUMBIA VALLEY, WASHINGTON 2006 – 2009
2006 – The most evolved of the lineup, with complex spice box, wild herbs, dried
flowers, currants and scorched earth aromas all emerging from the glass, the 2006
Cabernet Sauvignon is beautifully textured, full-bodied and seamless on the palate.
Up-front and approachable, it nevertheless has the back-end richness, depth and
structure to continue to evolve for another decade or more. Drink now-2023. (RP 96)
2007 – A monumental wine in the making, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is one
of those wines that presents such an over the top array of aromas and flavors that
it’s hard to figure out what you think about it with just a quick glance. It’s only
with the second or third sip that you really start to see how special this effort truly
is. Offering up perfumed, intense aromas of plum, violets, ink, licorice and black
currants, it flows onto the palate with a massive, incredibly full-bodied texture that
builds through the mid-palate and carries layers of polished tannins, awesome purity
of fruit and blockbuster length. Most likely not for everyone given the sheer size, it
is an incredible wine in my opinion. Still tasting like a barrel sample, it will have 30+
total years of longevity. Drink 2017-2037. (RP 100)
2008 – More pure and focused than the 2009, with a slightly closer to the vest
feel, the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon shows the cooler nature of the vintage and
has incredible detail, purity and freshness to its aromas and flavors. A blend of 98%
Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Merlot that spent 22 months in 100% new French
oak, it offers classic black currant, spice box, coffee bean, violets and exotic spices
to go with an ethereal, layered and seamless palate that delivers massive amounts
of fruit and texture without any apparent weight. I thoroughly enjoyed it now, yet it
will age for decades. Drink now-2033. (RP 97+)

ONE BOTTLE CHÂTEAU D’YQUEM 1982
Served from an ex-chateau bottle. Sauternes only produced two exceptional wines
in 1982: Suduiraut and Yquem. Although I have encountered the 1982 Chateau
d’Yquem on three occasions, this is the finest bottle. It was an early vintage,
physiological ripeness reached on September 16. Rainfall interrupted the harvest
that really could not start in earnest until November 2, for just four days. It has
a lucid amber color, and a fully mature bouquet with mandarin and marmalade
aromas that are pure and well-delineated. Yes, there is a sense of conservatism
here, yet you cannot but help be seduced by its exquisite balance and linearity. It
gently builds to a lovely apricot and orange zest finish, with just a hint of rosewater
lingering on the aftertaste. Drink now–2025. (RP 92)

THREE BOTTLES CHÂTEAU CLIMENS SAUTERNES-BARSAC 1986
A totally compelling Climens and every bit as good as the 1988. It is probably the best
Climens made since their spectacular 1971. Still light gold in color, it has an expansive
bouquet of new oak, oranges, pineapples, and other tropical fruits. In the mouth, there
is great richness that seems all the more impressive because of the wine’s remarkable
clarity and definition. There is as much botrytis in the 1986 as in the 1988. Despite the
intensity and extract levels, this sweet wine comes across as crisp and relatively light.
The 1986 is a stunning example of Climens at its very best. (RP 96)

BIONDI-SANTI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO VERTICAL
(Il Greppo Vineyard) Four Bottles each: 2006 | 2007 | 2008 (OWC)
Four Bottles Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino Annata 2006
The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino is remarkably harmonious at this young stage, quite a
departure at Biondi-Santi. The 2006 shows dazzling richness and integrity in its powerful
fruit in a totally captivating, sensual style. This is a beautifully centered, complete
Brunello with a bright future ahead of it. The Brunello was fermented in cement and
aged for three years in cask. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2036. (AG WA 94)
Four Bottles Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino Annata 2007
The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is gorgeous. The estate’s preference for picking on the
early side is one of the factors that help balance some of the fleshiness of the vintage.
This is an especially silky, supple Brunello from Biondi-Santi. The overt personality of the
year comes through, but not at the expense of the house’s style. Floral notes reappear to
frame the elegant, expressive finish. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2037. (AG WA 94)
Four Bottles Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino Annata 2008
The 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Annata is quite pretty in this vintage. It displays a
classic profile of underbrush, tobacco, smoke, licorice and black cherries. The tannins
are firm but nicely balance. I expect the 2008 will drink well with minimum cellaring. It
is one of the more open Brunellos I can remember tasting here. Still, there is plenty of
Biondi-Santi kick in the wine’s acidity and tannin profile. Anticipated maturity: 20162038. (AG WA92)

UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN — Spend a week enjoying the food, wine, and
secluded beauty of the Italian countryside.
This trip includes a stay in la terazza, a 3 bedroom private home, nestled in the historic
center of the ancient hill top town of cetona, named as one of the most beautiful towns in
italy. Italian, not foreign languages will be heard from the people walking the streets and
sitting in the Piazza enjoying a café. Decidedly not touristy, Cetona has embraced fine
dining and shops to cater to the locals and the wealthy romans who maintain second homes
in the town as an escape from the heat and noise of Rome. Just a few minutes from the A1
Autostrade, cetona is perfectly situated for convenient trips all over Tuscany and Umbria.
at La Terazza, dine al fresco in the private stone courtyard, cozy up to the fireplace, or sip
wine on the upper terraces as you enjoy the view over the valley and countryside. There’s
even a private garden where guests are invited to pick fresh vegetables when in season.
When you’re ready to venture out on your own, travel the country roads that link Cetona
with the Southern Tuscan wine trail between Montepulciano, Pienza and Montalcino,
along with multiple other less known beautiful villages. Montepulciano is a short 20-30
minute drive away.
For those that want to stay put in Cetona, you can soak in the history and natural beauty
of the area with visits to the Piazza Garibaldi and the Beveldere archeological and Natural
Park where Bronze age artifacts have been found. or, if culinary exploration is more your
style, take your pick of one (or all) of the many wine destination restaurants in the area.
During your stay you’ll be treated to: a private vineyard and cellar tour and a “bistecca
alla fiorentina lunch” with only older vintages at Carpineto owner and winemaker
Antonio Zaccheo, Thomas Jefferson Award Honoree 2015.
No blackout dates. Property is available year round, but the house is subject to availability.

12 BOTTLES CARPINETO VINO NOBILE RESERVE
Two bottles each: 1988 | 1989 | 1990 | 1993 | 1995 | 1997
This exceptional red wine derives its name from the Renaissance town of Montepulciano,
located in the province of Siena. The term "Nobile" seems to originate from the fact that
in the past its production was reserved exclusively for the aristocratic, noble families of the
town. From vineyards planted to a minimum of 70% Sangiovese (Prugnolo Gentile) and a
maximum of 30% of Canaiolo and other authorized grape varietals. This wine is aged two
years in large 5,500 liter Slavonian oval oak barrels, with a small part in French oak barrels.
After bottling, the wine is aged in our temperature controlled cellars for at least 6 months
before release. In order to deliver the highest quality, Carpineto has chosen to age this wine
one year longer than the 3 years required by appellation rules for a Riserva wine. It exhibits
a brilliant ruby red color, with ethereal, extraordinarily elegant with hints of violet and wood.
It has a dry, harmonic, fruity and velvety flavor, with an elegant texture and long finish.

THREE BOTTLES HARLAN ESTATE NAPA VALLEY RED 2007
The prodigious 2007 Harlan Estate reminds me of a hypothetical blend of the 2002
with a touch of the controversial 1997. Dense plum/purple-colored with sweet aromas
of barbecue smoke, blueberries, blackberries, cassis, licorice, hot rocks and subtle oak,
it is a splendidly opulent, pure wine with a skyscraper-like texture as well as stunningly
deep fruit that expands gracefully across the palate. The finish lasts nearly a full minute.
Because of its overwhelming richness and sweet tannins, this brilliant wine seems to be
approachable now, but I suspect further nuances and complexity will emerge after 4-5
years in the bottle. This wine will still be going strong at age 25-30. Like the offerings
from its sister estate, Bond, these Harlan Estate offerings are uncompromisingly brilliant
examples of Napa viticulture and winemaking at its finest. (RP 100)
Quella
The 2011 Quella Proprietary Red Blend is performing better from bottle than it did
last year from barrel. Lots of black raspberry and blueberry fruit intermixed with notes
of wet rocks and spring flowers jump from the glass of this medium-bodied, fleshy,
beautifully evolved 2011 that is already showing secondary nuances and complexity. This
vintage offers immediate gratification and drinkability. (RP 93)
Melbury Proprietary Red Wine
The medium to full-bodied 2011 Melbury Proprietary Red Blend exhibits lots of
blueberry and blackcurrant fruit, sweet tannin, an evolved, open-knit, friendly style,
good purity and a long finish. Drink it now and over the next 10-15 years. (RP 92)

SIX BOTTLE CASE CONTINUUM 2010
This has been an impressive, serious wine since the debut vintage, and Tim Mondavi’s
estate high on Pritchard Hill has fashioned a 2010 blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon,
14% Cabernet Franc, 11% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot. Gorgeously ripe, intricate and
nuanced, with aromas of spring flowers and red and black fruits, a stunning texture,
sweet tannin, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and undeniable elegance and finesse, this complex
beauty cascades over the palate without a hard edge to be found. It is a tribute to
Mondavi's long resume of skillful winemaking. Black currants, blueberries and a touch of
raspberries are all compelling and persistent. Drink this gorgeous Napa red now and over
the next 15+ years. (RP 97)

Vecina Proprietary Red Wine
The 2011 Vecina Proprietary Red Blend possesses Pauillac-like notes of scorched earth,
new saddle leather, spice box, vanillin and blackcurrants. With great fruit, stunning depth
and a distinctive earthiness, this open-knit, opulent, juicy, fleshy 2011 should drink well
for 15-20 years. (RP 94)
Umbria – 1998 Arnaldo-Caprai Sagretino di Montefalco 25 Anni (AG 93)
FIVE BOTTLE CASE OF BOND 2011
Pluribus Proprietary Red Wine
Displaying plenty of blueberry and black raspberry fruit, the soft, luscious 2011
Proprietary Red Blend Pluribus has more depth and concentration than it did from
barrel. Full-bodied, opulent and complex, this beauty should drink nicely for 15-20 years
(RP 95)
St. Eden
One of the superstars of this much maligned vintage, this beauty offers up notes of
forest floor, Christmas fruitcake, cedar, blackcurrants and sweet cherries. Broad, savory,
full-bodied and opulent, it is already complex and delicious, and should continue to
provide immense pleasure for 10-15 more years. (RP 95)
TWELVE BOTTLE CASE – BEST OF TUSCANY
Campania – 2006 Fattoria Galardi Terra di Lavoro (RP 97)
The 2006 Terra di Lavoro presents an intriguing combination of compelling inner
sweetness wrapped around a firm, imposing frame. This is a very Barolo-like Terra di
Lavoro that gradually opens up to reveal is pedigree, with endless layers of fruit and an
eternal finish. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2036.
Umbria – 1999 Lamborghini Campoleone (RP 96)
A dense opaque purple color is accompanied by scents of new saddle leather, blackberry
and cassis fruit, licorice, roasted meats, and graphite. Full-bodied and sweet, with a
fabulous texture, ripe tannin, adequate acidity, and brilliant definition, this is a tour de
force in winemaking. It should drink well for 10-15 years.
Tuscany – 1995 Antinori Solaia Toscana IGT (AG 96)
Always a voluptuous and rounded red. Gorgeous blackberry, black currant and lead
pencil aromas. Full-bodied, with well integrated, soft tannins. Long, fruity aftertaste.
Tuscany – 1997 San Guisto a Rentennano Percarlo Toscana IGT (RP 98)
The 1997 Percarlo impresses for its pure seduction. It is also impossibly young. Dark

red cherries, flowers and mint wrap around the palate in this sensual, inviting wine. In
keeping with the qualities of the warm year, the 1997 emphasizes textural depth and
richness rather then the more aromatic, firm style that defines cooler years such as
1996. The 1997 is drop dead gorgeous today.
Tuscany – 2007 Montepeloso Gabbro Toscana IGT (RP 96)
Layers of dark fruit, smoke, cured meat, cassis and grilled herbs come to life as this
powerful, muscular wine gradually reveals the depth of its pedigree and sheer class.
Despite its size, the 2007 Gabbro possesses exquisite complexity and a long, nuanced
finish. Scents of tar, licorice and smoke provide the final exclamation points on what is
truly a memorable wine. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.
Piedmont – 2004 G. Mascarello e Figlio Barolo Monprivato (RP 96)
Raspberry, citrus fruit and sandalwood aromas, with hints of fresh herbs. Full-bodied,
with silky tannins. Soft and subtle, with pretty fruit. This is like a fine, old-style
Burgundy.
Piedmont – 2005 Gaja Barbaresco (R 94)
Floral aromatics give way to bright spiced red fruits, menthol and licorice as the 2005
Barbaresco opens in the glass. This is a firm, classically built wine of notable elegance.
The tannins are substantial yet beautifully woven into the wine’s mid-weight frame. This
is another beautiful Barbaresco from Angelo Gaja, but it will require patience as it is
tightly wound today. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.
Lombardi – 2001 AR.PE.PE Valtellina Superiore Grumello Buon Consiglio Riserva
(100% Nebbiolo aged 4 years in chestnut and oak 560 cases made (NR)
Veneto – 1991 Quintarelli Amarone (WS 92)
Here’s an example of why Amarone is unique in the world of wine. A beauty, from the
deep, espressolike color and smoky, exotic aromas to the overripe berry and botrytis
flavors. Glycerinlike in texture, yet muscular and high in alcohol, with a lingering finish.
Veneto – 2005 Dal Forno Romano Valpolicella Superiore (AG 95)
Firm, sturdy tannins frame blackberries, blueberries, violets and new leather in the 2005
Valpolicella. This is an especially structured, shut-down wine, even within the context
of Dal Forno. The wine’s gorgeous inner perfume and sheer depth suggest that all that
is required is patience. With time in the glass the tannins soften just enough to get a
glimpse of what is in store for those who can wait a few years. Bittersweet chocolate,
graphite and tar are layered into the authoritative finish. Anticipated maturity: 20152025

TWELVE BOTTLE CASE – KISTLER 2008
Two bottles – Kistler Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard (RP 96)
The stunning 2008 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard reveals an intense bouquet of tropical
fruits, white currants, white peaches, pineapple and citrus oil followed by a full-bodied
white that lives up to its exquisite aromatics. It should drink beautifully for 7-8 years.
Two bottles – Kistler Chardonnay McCrea Vineyard (RP 94)
The 2008 Chardonnay McCrea Vineyard reveals copious aromas of white peaches,
crushed rocks, nectarines and citrus blossoms in a grand cru Chablis-like style. Drink this
beauty over the next 7-8 years.
Two bottles – Kistler Chardonnay Durell Vineyard (RP 93+)
Subtle smoke, orange marmalade, quince, white peach and brioche aromas emerge from
the light gold-hued 2008 Chardonnay Durell Vineyard. This cuvee is made in a medium
to full-bodied, slightly restrained, tighter style than the Dutton Ranch or the McCrea
Vineyard, but it reveals considerable potential.
Two bottles – Kistler Pinot Noir Kistler Vineyard (RP 93)
The 2008 Pinot Noir Kistler Vineyard exhibits lots of wild berry fruit intermixed with
graphite, herb and spring flower notes in its medium-bodied, luscious style.
Two bottles – Kistler Pinot Noir Cuvée Natalie (ST 95)
The 2008 Pinot Noir Cuvee Natalie Silver Belt, all from the Joseph Swan clone of
Pinot Noir, offers rich forest floor, raspberry, spice box and earthy notes in a style that
reminds me of a Burgundy premier cru from Volnay. This beautiful Pinot can be drunk
now or cellared for a decade.
Two bottles – Kistler Pinot Noir Cuvée Elizabeth Bodega Headlands (RP 96)
From the coldest parcel of four cool terroirs, the stunning 2008 Pinot Noir Bodega

Inky/purple-colored to the rim, it boasts a spectacular bouquet of blueberries,
blackberries, and the region’s classic crushed stone minerality. This full-throttle yet
remarkably elegant 2001 possesses tremendous intensity and texture as well as layers of
flavor, but comes across as not over the top, overripe, or overly heavy. The 60-second
finish reveals more noticeable tannin than the other cuvees. Give it 1-2 years of cellaring
and drink it over the following 10-15. (RP 98)

with modern winemaking and relatively old vines. It boasts an inky/blue/purple color to
the rim as well as an extraordinary nose of lead pencil shavings, blackberries, creme de
cassis, smoke, chocolate, and hints of tobacco as well as cedar. (RP 96)
2003 Rotllan Torra Tirant
The purple/black color is followed by aromas of melting tar, blueberries, blackberries, and
a touch of vanillin. The wine is dense and rich with layers of flavor, the tannin well hidden
by the fruit. Give this bad boy another 4-6 years of cellaring and drink it for 15 years
thereafter. (RP 96)
2003 Mauro Terreus Pago de Cueva Baja
Purple/black in color, it offers a superb perfume of smoky oak, pencil lead, mineral, spice
box, black cherry, and blackberry liqueur. Opulent, thick, and layered, it has gobs of
spicy, ripe black fruits, and licorice and espresso notes which emerge on the palate. The
wine is beautifully balanced and very lengthy. It will reward extended cellaring and drink
well through 2030. (RP 96)
2003 Numanthia Termanthia
The palate is rich and full-bodied with eucalyptus-tinged red berry fruit, sage, cloves and
white pepper. It exhibits better freshness and balance than the aromatics suggest and is
probably superior to a lot of Right Banks in this vintage. Though the 2002 demonstrates
more vitality, the 2003 appears to be maturing well, even if the palate is leaving the
aromatics behind. Drink now-2018. (RP 90)
2004 La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva
This 2004, from a superb vintage shows a beautiful light red color with a brick rim and
a superb nose redolent of balsamic woods, spices, leather, well-hung meat, incense and
truffles. The light to medium-bodied palate shows fully resolved tannins, great acidity
and pure, pungent flavors that linger in the mouth forever and that can only be Rioja.
(RP 96)
2004 Vinedos Alonso del Yerro Alonso del Yerro Maria
The more expressive 2004 Maria has a bouquet that soars from the glass. Already
complex, it effortlessly combines elegance and power. Give it 6-8 years of additional
bottle age and drink it from 2016 to 2034. (RP 96)
2004 Pintia
There is an air of confidence about the bouquet on the 2004 Pintia, with scents of
dark cherry, Indian ink, wild strawberry and a touch of raspberry preserve, all with fine
delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet core of red berry fruit. The
tannins are strong and quite robust, although it is counterbalanced by plenty of fresh
red fruit mingling with dried herbs, white pepper and a touch of sage. There is a touch
• 44 •
of astringency on the finish, but otherwise this powerful Pintia should age over several
more years. (RP 94)
2003 Mauro Terreus Pago de Cueva Baja
2004 Mas Romani (Mas Alta) La Basseta
Dark ruby/purple, the wine has a spectacular perfume of mineral, scorched earth,
violets, lavender, kirsch, and blueberry pie. Full-bodied, the wine is opulent with a velvety
texture, layered flavors, a beautiful integration of oak, tannin, and acidity, and a welldelineated, long finish. Drink this pleasure-filled wine over the next 10-12 years. (RP 96)
2004 Merum Priorati Osmin
The wine was aged for 12 months in new French oak. Opaque purple-colored, the wine
offers up a fragrant nose of scorched earth, spice box, cherry, raspberry, and blueberry
liqueur. Full-flavored and opulent on the palate, this chewy wine has an extroverted
personality with layers of supple fruit, ripe tannin, superb balance, and a 60-second
finish. This sensuous wine can be enjoyed now and over the next 15 years. (RP 97)
2004 Celler Cal Pla Mas d’en Compte Planots
The wine was aged for 16 months in new French oak. Inky purple, the wine has an
extraordinary bouquet of damp earth, truffle, creme de cassis, and kirsch. Thick and
opulent on the palate, this powerful effort is a pure pleasure machine. Already easyto-drink, the wine has a well-concealed structure and superb balance. It should drink
well for the next 10-12 years. (RP 97)
2004 Mas Romani (Mas Alta) La Creu Alta Inky purple, the wine has an ethereal
nose of spice box, scorched earth, truffle, graphite, kirsch, and wild blueberries.
Already complex on the palate, the wine is plush and silky with impeccable balance
and an exceptionally long finish. Drink this hedonistic effort over the next 10-12 years.

12 BOTTLE CASE OF FRENCH WINE
an oily-textured yet brightly citric palate that borders on austerity. This points toward
ample underlying extract, yet is not at all heavy. (WA 91)
N/V Domaine Xavier Vignon Châteauneuf-du-Pape VII/IX/X Reservée
Non-vintage blend of 2007, 2009, and 2010. Fabulously full-bodied and decadent,
with loads of lavender, incense, black raspberry and cured-meat nuances, it’s still youthful and vibrant, with notable freshness and purity. Enjoy this brilliant wine through 2028.
(WA 96)
2009 Les Pallieres Terrasse du Diable Gigondas
It exhibits a light ruby color along with fresh cherry and raspberry notes intermixed with
a striking minerality. Fresh, lively and refreshing, with notions of strawberry fruit on the
palate, this mid-weight red should be drunk over the next 5-7 years. (WA 93)
2005 Paul Pernot Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru
2005 Geantet-Pansiot Chambolle-Musigny 1e Cru
This displays black and red raspberry with smoked meat in the nose, comes to the palate
bright, brash and intense in its vivid fruit acids yet with emerging creaminess of texture
and hints of vanilla. (RP 91)
2005 Ch. Fargues Sauternes
The 2005 Château de Fargues has a rich and intense bouquet with layers of honey,
dried peach, beeswax and acacia that soar from the glass. The palate is powerful and
authoritative: intense botrytis-rich honeyed fruit with compelling mineralité underneath.
(WA 95)
2006 Raveneau Chablis 1e Cru Montee de Tonnerre
The Raveneau 2006 Chablis Montee de Tonerre features ripe pineapple, lychee,
grapefruit, and brown spices; piquant, pithy, yet deeply sweet nuttiness; an almost
tactile sense of chalk dust; formidable sheer density; and a brothy richness that can only
be compared with a bone-rich meat stock reduction. It finishes with citric brightness,
richness of fruit, and profundity of minerality, and should reward up to 10-12 years of
cellaring. (WA 93-94)
2007 Pegau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reservée
It exhibits a dense plum/purple color along with a big, sweet bouquet of beef blood,
grilled herbs, barbecue smoke, lavender, sweet cassis and kirsch and a hint of Asian
soy. The wine possesses a fabulous texture, a full-bodied mouthfeel and a seamless
integration of tannin, acidity and alcohol. Certainly the alcohol level is pushing 16% in
this wine. With extraordinary texture and unctuosity, this remarkable effort should drink
well for 20+ years yet be very appealing in its youth given the glycerin, velvety texture,
and remarkable complexity. (RP 95)
2007 Vieux Telegraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Dense ruby/purple-tinged with an exquisite nose of salty sea breezes, licorice, ground
pepper, jammy black cherries, black currants, figs, and plums, this is a full-bodied, rich,
Provencal-styled offering with lots of sweet, ripe tannin. It is surprisingly accessible for
a Vieux Telegraphe (this wine normally shuts down several years after bottling), but it
should have great longevity (25+ years) given its power, full-bodied mouthfeel, and
enormous length and richness. (RP 96)
2010 Santa Duc Prestige des Hautes Garriques Gigondas
Its inky/purple color is accompanied by glorious aromas of creme de cassis, kirsch,
blackberries and a cornucopia of roasted herb, meat and licorice smells. It possesses
fabulous intensity, a multidimensional mouthfeel and a tremendously long finish that
lasts 40+ seconds. This beauty should drink well for two decades. (WA 97)
2012 Domaine Xavier Vignon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc
It gives up great aromas of quince, almond paste and white currants that are carried by
a salty minerality that keeps you coming back to the glass. Medium-bodied, textured
and rich, this nicely balanced, classy white should drink nicely for 2-3 years. Drink now2017. (RP 92)

CALIFORNIA CLASSICS
2003 Colgin IX Estate, Syrah
Aromas of crushed berry, succulent wild berry, violets and loads of white pepper character
turn to a sweet ripeness, folding together in a seamless presentation. The finish is long and
lingering, with hints of beef carpaccio, mocha and espresso, and it just keeps getting better.
A magnificent wine that makes a huge statement about Syrah in Napa. 313 cases made.
(WS 98)
2003 Araujo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Eisele Vineyard
Absolutely superb, this 2003 is drinking beautifully. Gorgeously fresh black currant and
black raspberry notes intermixed with spring flowers and forest floor jump from the glass
from one of the most aromatically complex wines of the vintage. Medium to full-bodied
with sweet fruit, velvety, melted, integrated tannin, a round, generous mouthfeel and no
evidence of oak, this is a classy, elegant as well as substantial beauty that continues to age
well. Bravo! (RP 98)
2009 Dominus, Bordeaux Blend
A seamless classic, it offers a symphony of red and black currants, Asian plum sauce,
lavender, and underbrush. Sweet Christmas fruitcake characteristics emerge from this
magnificent. The seamless integration of acidity, tannin, wood and alcohol, the brilliant
length and overall compelling complexity and richness make it one of the great classics
from this historic estate. It should drink well for 20-25 years. (RP 97)
2012 Dominus, Bordeaux Blend
Flirting with perfection, the 2012 Dominus is composed of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon,
5% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Five thousand cases were produced, a relatively
modest amount from this large vineyard’s big crop. This wine’s opaque plum/purple color is
accompanied by a beautiful nose of sweet crème de cassis, a touch of background oak (only
40% new oak is used), spice box, cedarwood, black cherries and a hint of spring flowers.
This 2012 can be drunk in its exuberant youthfulness or cellared for another 20-25 years.
(RP 99)
2012 Opus One Proprietary Red Wine
Rich, powerful and seductive, the 2012 Opus One blossoms in the glass with superb
textural richness and volume. Dark red and black fruit, smoke, cedar, new leather and
tobacco all meld together as the 2012 shows off its personality. Fine, silky tannins support
the huge, creamy finish. 96 points Antonio Galloni)
2013 Kistler: Chardonnay, McCrea Vineyard
Pretty and open-knit, the 2013 Chardonnay McCrea Vineyard graces the palate with a
lovely sense of understatement. Rich yellow stone fruits take on light tropical and honeyed
inflections in the glass. Rich, voluptuous yet quintessentially medium in body, the 2013
should drink well with minimal cellaring. (92-94 Antonio Galloni)
2013 Aubert: Chardonnay, Larry Hyde and Sons
The 2013 Chardonnay Larry Hyde & Sons reveals a greenish hue to its gold color as well
as crisp acidity, hints of orange blossom, white peach, white currants and mangoes. This
fresh, beautifully fruited, medium to full-bodied, rich wine should drink well for 10-12 years.
Production from this four-acre vineyard is generally around 1,000 cases. (92-96 RP)
2013 Araujo: Viognier, Eisele Vineyard
The 2013 Eisele Viognier shows an exceptional liveliness that carries through the expansive
palate. While loaded with peach, orange and honeysuckle, itfinishes with fresh, clean
minerality – this wine is at once rich, intense and precise. (winemaker notes)
2013 Peter Michael "Ma Belle-Fille" Knights Valley Chardonnay
The 2013 possesses an attractive smoky nuttiness intermixed with notions of wet rocks,
tangy caramelized citrus, apple blossoms and nectarines. If one considers the total production
of all the Peter Michael cuvées (which must be approaching 30,000 cases) and the diversity
of their wines, including six cuvées of Chardonnay, four of Pinot Noir, three Bordeaux
blends, and lastly Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, Peter Michael Winery may be the best-run
winery of its size for world-class quality. There has been a succession of brilliant minds and
craftspeople who have gone through these doors, from the early days with Helen Turley and
Mark Aubert, to Luc Morlet and now his brother, Nicolas Morlet. For the last two decades,
they seem to go from strength to strength, and the 2012s and 2013s may be the finest group
of wines Peter Michael has ever produced. Drink now-2023 (96-98 RP)
2014 Kistler: Chardonnay, Sonoma Mountain
Pure and focused, with a vivid core of white peach, nectarine and tangerine flavors. Tangy
acidity gives this a chalky, minerally edge and a long, persistent and captivating finish. Drink
now through 2022. (WS 93)

2012 Joseph Phelps Insignia
This vintage was of such high quality and quantity that 17,500 cases were produced. A
magnificent Insignia, it boasts an opaque purple color as well as fabulous notes of graphite,
blackberries, blackcurrant liqueur, camphor, barbecue smoke and spice box. Rich, fullbodied and opulent with plenty of tannin and structure lurking beneath the extravagant
generosity of fruit, this stunning 2012 should drink well for 25-30+ years. (96-100 RP)
2010 Aubert: Chardonnay, Larry Hyde and Sons
The 2010 Chardonnay Larry Hyde and Sons is wonderfully textured in the glass. Vivid and
layered, the 2012 flows across the palate with hints of Chamomile, lemon curd, mint, wild
flowers and a hint of honey. The 2012 was aged in 70% new French oak barrels, all of which
it handles with grace. The finish is long and exceptionally polished. (94 points Antonio

THE PERFECT SCORE: A COLLECTION OF 100 POINT WINES
1946 Bodegas Toro Albala Don PX Convento Selection
The 1946 Don PX Convento Seleccion produced with Pedro Ximenez grapes dehydrated
under the sun at the time of the Second World War, was only bottled in September 2011. This
is an extreme wine, my first descriptor was ultra-mega-super concentrated. It is unbelievably
powerful, both in the nose and the palate, full of umami, with sweet cinnamon, Christmas
cake, camphor, petrol, lemongrass, Belgian chocolate and butter. Incredibly complex and
rich, sweet, balanced and smooth in the palate, it is both very sweet and somehow salty, and
with time it develops a black olive note. It combines the texture of the 1962 and the elegance
of the 1949. It is as decadent as it gets. 825 bottles were produced. Drink it if you ever have
the privilege to do so from 2013-2060. (RP 100)
1997 Joseph Phelps Insignia
An inky/plum/purple color is accompanied by a stunning bouquet of violets, charcoal, creme
de cassis and a hint of toast. Prodigious when it hits the palate with a full-bodied expansiveness,
there is not a hard edge to be found in the 1997, only velvety tannins, compelling depth and
fruit intensity, and stunning purity. It is a perfect expression of Napa viticulture and wine that
should continue to age effortlessly for two decades or more. (RP 100)
2004 Benjamin Romeo Contador
The 2004 Contador is even better than the 2003 if that is possible. More expressive
aromatically (a characteristic of 2004) this wine is more tightly wound and backward than
the 2003. Unlike the 2003 it demands a minimum of a decade of cellaring and could well
last for 75-100 years if well stored. (RP 100)
2005 Château Leoville Las Cases
This is breathtaking. Black in color, with incredible aromas of crushed blackberry, mineral,
licorice and lead pencil. Full-bodied, with a mind-blowing texture of seamless tannins that
coat every millimeter of the palate. Goes on and on, with licorice, currant and flowers.
Time will tell if it's better than the 2000. Best after 2017. (WS 100)
2007 Colgin Cariad Proprietary Red Wine Cariad Napa Valley Red
One of northern California’s watershed vintages for Bordeaux varietals, according to
Allison Tauziet, this wine revealed great potential from the day the first grapes were
crushed. It possesses a dense purple color, massive fruit, soft but high tannin, and a
structural profile somewhat similar to the 2002. There appears to be more underlying
minerality in the 2007, but the sweetness of the tannin, the enormous concentration
of fruit (blackberry, blueberry, cherry) intermixed with graphite, chocolate, coffee and
crushed rock characteristics is striking. (RP 100)
2009 Clos Fourtet
Inky blue/purple with notes of camphor, forest floor, blackberry, cassis, sweet cherries,
licorice, the wine has stunning aromatics, unctuous texture and an almost inky
concentration, but without any hard edges. With considerable tannin and just enough
acidity to provide definition, this wine transcends even its premier grand cru classe terroir.
It is certainly the finest Clos Fourtet ever produced. Give it 5-7 years of cellaring to allow
some of its baby fat to fall away. There is certainly enough structure underneath to keep
for 30-50 years. Bravo! (RP 100)

17TH ANNIVERSARY
A collection in celebration of our 17th Annual Bacchanal donated by Bacchanal
Committee Members and Friends.
1982 Château Gruaud Larose
A broodingly dense, thick, unctuously textured, inky/plum/garnet/purple color offers
up scents of beef blood, steak tartare, cassis, herbs, tobacco, and underbrush. One of
the most concentrated wines of the vintage (as well as one of the most concentrated
Bordeaux’s I have ever tasted), it is a huge, full-bodied, weighty, rich wine whose tannins
are getting silkier and silkier. It appears set for another 30-40 years of life. (RP 98)
1988 Château d’Yquem
The 1988 d’Yquem has an incredibly profound nose of orange marmalade, dried apricots,
honeycomb, musk and dried pineapple with hints of marzipan and crystallized ginger. The
palate is seamless with a great line of crisp acid cutting through the densely packed dried
tropical fruit and honeyed flavour layers. The finish just goes on and on. (RP 98)
1989 Penfolds, Grange Hermitage South Australia Bin 95
Amazingly ripe and lush, this bubbles with vibrant fruit like a mouthful of cassis syrup,
concentrated, elegant and remarkably silky in texture. Blackberry, currant and vanilla
flavors ooze over palate, making for a thoroughly hedonistic drink. (RP 96)
1997 Peter Michael Winery Les Pavots Estate Red
A blue/black/purple color is followed by an extraordinary bouquet of toast, blackberries,
creme de cassis, licorice, and cedar. Full-bodied, with silky tannin, low acidity, and layers
of concentrated, pure black fruits judiciously wrapped in subtle toasty oak, this wine
can be drunk early, but promises to hit its peak in 5-7 years, and last for two or more
decades. (RP 96)
1998 Château Pavie Macquin Saint Emilion
Nearly exaggerated levels of intensity, extract, and richness are apparent in this
opaque blue/purple-colored wine. Sumptuous aromas of blueberries, blackberries,
and cherries combine with smoke, licorice, vanillin, and truffles to create a compelling
aromatic explosion. The wine is fabulously dense, full-bodied, and layered, with multiple
dimensions, gorgeous purity, and superbly integrated acidity as well as tannin. (RP 95)
1999 Isole & Olena Toscana Cepparello
Incredibly well-crafted red. Complex aromas of raspberries, vanilla and coffee. Mediumbodied, with well-integrated tannins and a long, silky finish. A beauty. Best after 2004.
4,250 cases made. (WS 92)
2003 Grace Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon
Deep, bright ruby-red. A real potpourri of a nose: clove, cinnamon, sandalwood, orange
peel and licorice. Then sweet, round and rich, but with very strong, if not exotic, oak
spices; I was reminded of mulled cider. Fairly large-scaled for a cabernet from this estate.
Finishes with a note of chocolate and supple tannins that coat the entire mouth. The
Grace cabernet appears to be sacrificing some floral delicacy in favor of more sweetness
and weight, partly through the use of a higher percentage of new oak. (ST 90)
2005 Greenock Creek Seven Acre Shiraz 2005
Tar, mineral, earth notes, smoked meat, and blueberry scents jump from the glass of
this full-bodied but restrained (relatively speaking) Shiraz. On the palate it is a bit more
austere than its siblings with a bit more structure and apparent acidity. As a result, it will
require longer cellaring and should offer prime drinking from 2015 to 2030.
• 51 •
2006 Sloan Rutherford, Napa Valley Red
An extraordinary effort, very tightly wound with a wealth of detailed flavors, exhibiting
tiers of black cherry, plum, currant, berry jam, cedar, cigar box, black licorice and tobacco
leaf. Full-bodied and well-structured, ending with tapered flavors that retain their focus.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2011 through
2025. 700 cases made. (WS 97)
2006 Harlan Estate
Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by classic aromas of creme de cassis, melted licorice,
smoked meats, burning embers, and graphite. It has thrown off some of the tannic clout it
displayed last year, revealing great balance. A candidate for “wine of the vintage,” this dense,
full-bodied effort has 25+ years of life ahead of it. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2035. (RP 96)
2007 El Nido, Jumilla Spain
It has a splendid, nearly ethereal perfume, a full-bodied, voluptuous personality, and
unrestrained power. It is a bit more structured than the Clio bottling and will offer a drinking
window extending from 2013 to 2025. (RP 96)
2008 Col d’Orcia Brunello di Montalcino
Sweet, rich, lush and layered, yet also remarkably light on its feet, the 2008 Brunello di
Montalcino dazzles from start to finish. Sweet roses, red berries, flowers, mint and orange
peel all take an appearance in this utterly impeccable polished Brunello. I imagine the 2008
will still be a special wine at age 30. The aromas are naturally still quite primary, so some
cellaring is advisable. The brutal August hailstorm took with it a full 40% of the production,
but left behind a strikingly beautiful Brunello endowed with seemingly endless layers of fruit
and fabulous overall balance. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2038. (RP 94)
2008 Quinta do Vale Meão, Douro
Very fresh and pure-tasting, displaying a minerally essence to the concentrated dark plum,
cassis and dark cherry flavors that are broad, dense and rich. Medium-grained tannins
emerge with plenty of fresh acidity. The balanced finish features mocha and spice, with hints
of chocolate. (WS 95)
2009 Dalla Valle Maya Proprietary Red Wine
It exhibits notes of sweet creme de cassis, camphor, bouquet garni, spice box and a hint of
road tar. Full-bodied with remarkable density as well as a multidimensional personality, and
abundant, well-integrated tannins, this 2009 can be approached now, but it should be even
better in 5-7 years. It should last for three decades or more. (RP 98+)
2010 Beau Vigne Cabernet Sauvignon Cult
Blackberries, blueberries, menthol, licorice and new leather wrap around the palate as the
2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Cult shows off its considerable personality. In 2010, the Cult has
a level of inner sweetness and perfume that isn’t found in the other wines. Layers of toasty,
ripe fruit continue to blossom all the way through to the resonant, expressive finish. The
blend is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot.
Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020. (RP 92)

The 1989 Haut-Brion is a seamless, majestic classic, and a tribute to this phenomenal terroir

box. The levels of fruit, extract, and glycerin in this viscous, full-bodied, low-acid wine are

GLASS ART BY LOCAL ARTIST MICHAEL SCHUNKE
ACCOMPANIED BY ONE 3L FATTORIA DI FÈLSINA
BERARDENGA FONTALLORO 2007
1.5L decanter with 6 wine glasses and one 3L Bottle
A talented draftsman and artist from a young age, Michael Schunke was drawn to
glassblowing as a student at the Tyler School of Art at Temple University. His early influence
of drawing and mark-making is visible in his approach to engraving and incorporating fine
lines in his distinctive glasswork. A former professor at the Toyama Institute of Glass Art in
Toyama, Japan, he continues to teach glassmaking around the world. Schunke has recently
been recognized as a resident artist at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, WA, and the Toledo
Museum of Glass in Toledo, OH. His work, both functional and sculptural, is housed in
museum collections world-wide.
Michael Schunke is perhaps best known amongst collectors and glassmakers alike for his
contemporary, one-of-a-kind, hand-blown glass goblet designs. The goblets are his touchstone
in the studio and his foundation as a maker. The artist’s goblets have gained world-wide
recognition from glass collectors and enthusiasts, and have been featured in publications
including Veranda Magazine, Traditional Home Magazine, and New York Spaces.
2011 Aubert Lauren Sonoma Coast Chardonnay
Aubert’s 2011 Chardonnay Lauren Vineyard flows across the palate with hints of butter,
marzipan, spices, nectarines and dried apricots. Rich, voluptuous and creamy, the 2011 is
another of the more overt wines in this range. Still, there is more than enough underlying
minerality to balance the fruit. (RP 95)
The 2007 Fontalloro is round, sweet and inviting, very much in keeping with the style of the
vintage. The fruit tends towards the redder end of the spectrum vis-a-vis the Rancia and
the Fontalloro seems to possess a touch more freshness. Floral, spiced notes add lift on the
finish. As attractive as the 2007 Fontalloro is, and it is very pretty, the wine does not have a
particularly bright track record of developing the noblest aromas and flavors in bottle. (RP 93)
2011 Podere Poggio Scalette Alta Valle della Greve Il Carbonaione

ONE MAGNUM CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 1986
Deep garnet-black colour. An incredible array of aromas on the nose: blackberry, black
cherry, tobacco, espresso, leather, black olive and loam. The palate is absolutely seamless
from first impression to finish, effortlessly building layers of complexity in the mouth
and leading to a very long, earth and spice finish. I can’t see how this could possibly be
improvement so have no alternative but concede perfection. Drink now to 2045+.
