 A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR 
EVEN ON THE MILE IT’S STILL ABOUT:
‘COMING HOME’
The day before the Church prayed: “Lord send out Your Spirit and renew the
face of the earth”, Pastoral Council President and Parish Trustee Gary Etheridge
brought Our Holy Redeemer to the Nautical Mile to do just that. After weeks of
preparation, the Ministry to Catholics of African Ancestry, along with a host of
others that included Al and Artie Grover, Larry Vodopivec, Michael Crouse and
the Our Holy Redeemer Choir, the RIA Music Ministry, the OHR Family Ministry,
the Legion of Mary, and Tom Himmelberg, presented a day-long series of song,
music, and activities that welcomed people under the tent and helped them
experience for themselves why coming home is what it’s all about: even on the Nautical Mile!
The Nautical Mile will once again provide a home for Our Holy Redeemer during
the Summer of 2014 when on 6 July at 10:00 A.M., “Mass on the Waterfront”
returns to 175 Woodcleft Avenue for an eight-week tour (Please see page 16).
And while I do not expect any of our newly
Ordained Priests (please pray for these four
Priests: Father David Atanasio, Father
Christopher Mirabel, Father Joseph Scolaro, and
Father James Shelton.) to offer “Mass on the
Waterfront”, I am happy to note that in addition to my return to the Mile on
6 July, Father Dennis Suglia will return to the Mile on 10 August, and Father Nick
Zientarski will return for Mass on 17 August.
Throughout the Summer, Our Holy Redeemer will not only offer Mass on the Mile, but a series of professionally
produced concerts will be sponsored by Our Holy Redeemer as well. Our own
Coordinator of Music Ministry has put together an exciting Wednesday Night
Summer Concert Series that will run for six consecutive weeks on the Mile (please
see page 18). Your presence at any one or more of these performances and a
“free-will” offering will help support Our Holy Redeemer’s presence on the
Waterfront throughout the summer. Please come home and see why coming home
is what it’s all about: even on the Nautical Mile!
And if you should happen to be on the Nautical Mile at other times during the week, please stop under the
tent at 175 Woodcleft Avenue and “Pray for Peace” with help from Saint Francis of Assisi:

A STATEMENT FROM TIMOTHY CARDINAL DOLAN
AND THE BISHOPS OF NEW YORK STATE
Calling on Governor Cuomo and Leaders in Albany: Don’t Let Us Down
More than 200 Catholic schools have closed in the last 15 years throughout New
York State, as families and parishes, who strongly believe in the value of Catholic
education, struggle to keep up with increasing costs. Many of our public schools also
desperately need help.
To address these needs, the NYS Catholic Bishops joined a broad coalition of faith
groups, community organizations and labor unions backing legislation called the
Education Investment Tax Credit. The measure would encourage increased charitable
donations to generate more private scholarships as well as additional resources to
public schools. It also helps all teachers provide needed materials and supplies for
every classroom in New York.
The vast majority of legislators support the bill. Why? It’s because the legislation
will help all children, regardless of where they go to school. It’s a win-win for all
families!
Although Governor Cuomo assured us he would fight to include the proposal in
the state budget, in the end, we were left out.
As the legislative session ends in Albany this coming week, we pray that
Governor Cuomo won’t let us down. We ask that you join us in that prayer. Pray that
Governor Cuomo will put children ahead of politics and fight for the Education
Investment Tax Credit.
We also ask that you contact him immediately with that same message. You can
send a message to the Governor through the website of the New York State Catholic
Conference: www.nyscatholic.org.

Unity in Society
36. The harmonious unity which must be sought among peoples and nations also needs ever greater improvement
among the various classes of individuals. Otherwise mutual antagonism and conflict can result, as we have already seen.
And the next step brings rioting mobs, wanton destruction of property, and sometimes even bloodshed. Meanwhile
public and private resources diminish and are stretched to the danger point.
37. On this point Pope Leo XIII made apt and appropriate comment: "God has commanded that there be differences of
classes in the human community and that these classes, by friendly cooperation, work out a fair and mutual adjustment
of their interests.'' (11) For it is quite clear that "as the symmetry of the human frame results from suitable arrangement
of the various parts of the body, so in a body politic it is ordained by nature that... the classes should dwell in harmony
and agreement, so as to maintain the balance of the body politic. Each needs the other: capital cannot do without
labour, nor labour without capital. Their mutual agreement will result in the splendor of right order."(12)
38. Anyone, therefore, who ventures to deny that there are differences among social classes contradicts the very laws of
nature. Indeed, whoever opposes peaceful and necessary cooperation among the social classes is attempting, beyond
doubt, to disrupt and divide human society; he menaces and does serious injury to private interests and the public
welfare.
39. As Our predecessor, Pius XII wisely said, "In a nation that is worthy of the name, inequalities among the social classes
present few or no obstacles to their union in common brotherhood. We refer, of course, to those inequalities which
result not from human caprice but from the nature of things—inequalities having to do with intellectual and spiritual
growth, with economic facts, with differences in individual circumstances, within, of course, the limits prescribed by
justice and mutual charity." (13)
40. The various classes of society, as well as groups of individuals, may certainly protect their rights, provided this is
done by legal means, not violence, and provided that they do no injustice to the inviolable rights of others. All men are
brothers. Their differences, therefore, must be settled by friendly agreement, with brotherly love for one another.

QUESTIONS OF THE CHURCH'S MORAL TEACHING

“… 5. Given these circumstances, which still exist, I came to the decision–as I announced in my Apostolic Letter
Spiritus Domini, issued on 1 August 1987 on the second centenary of the death of Saint Alphonsus Maria de'
Liguori–to write an Encyclical with the aim of treating "more fully and more deeply the issues regarding the very
foundations of moral theology",(9) foundations which are being undermined by certain present day tendencies.
I address myself to you, Venerable Brothers in the Episcopate, who share with me the responsibility of safeguarding
"sound teaching" (2 Tim 4:3), with the intention of clearly setting forth certain aspects of doctrine which are of crucial
importance in facing what is certainly a genuine crisis, since the difficulties which it engenders have most serious
implications for the moral life of the faithful and for communion in the Church, as well as for a just and fraternal
social life.
If this Encyclical, so long awaited, is being published only now, one of the reasons is that it seemed fitting for it to be
preceded by the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which contains a complete and systematic exposition of Christian
moral teaching. The Catechism presents the moral life of believers in its fundamental elements and in its many
aspects as the life of the "children of God": "Recognizing in the faith their new dignity, Christians are called to lead
henceforth a life 'worthy of the Gospel of Christ' (Phil 1:27). Through the Sacraments and prayer they receive the
grace of Christ and the gifts of His Spirit which make them capable of such a life".(10) Consequently, while referring
back to the Catechism "as a sure and authentic reference text for teaching Catholic doctrine",(11) the Encyclical will
limit itself to dealing with certain fundamental questions regarding the Church's moral teaching, taking the form of a
necessary discernment about issues being debated by ethicists and moral theologians. The specific purpose of the
present Encyclical is this: to set forth, with regard to the problems being discussed, the principles of a moral teaching
based upon Sacred Scripture and the living Apostolic Tradition,(12) and at the same time to shed light on the
presuppositions and consequences of the dissent which that teaching has met.

6. The dialogue of Jesus with the rich young man, related in the nineteenth chapter of Saint Matthew's Gospel, can
serve as a useful guide for listening once more in a lively and direct way to His moral teaching: "Then someone came
to Him and said, 'Teacher, what good must I do to have eternal life?' And He said to him, 'Why do you ask Me about
what is good? There is only One Who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.' He said to
Him, 'Which ones?' And Jesus said, 'You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You
shall not bear false witness; Honour your father and mother; also, You shall love your neighbour as yourself.' The
young man said to Him, ‘I have kept all these; what do I still lack?' Jesus said to him, 'If you wish to be perfect, go, sell
your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in Heaven; then come, follow Me'"
(Mt 19:16-21).(13).

THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL
The end of the school year is always busy with exam
review, graduation preparations, field day activities and
other events that contribute to very busy days. Once again this year we
are blessed to have the presence of two young men to help us for these
final weeks of the academic calendar.
Mr. Manuel Baez and Mr. Ernesto Dominguez are participants in the
Contact Program sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers for
individuals discerning whether God is calling them to serve Him and His
people as a Brother. Both men are living in the Brothers’ community here
in Freeport for a month while ministering to the students of The De La
Salle School.
Mr. Baez is in his third year as a physics major at Manhattan College and
Mr. Dominguez is a graduate of Empire College where he studied art. Mr.
Dominguez is scheduled to advance to the status of postulant when he
moves to the Brothers’ formation house in Philadelphia in the fall. Please
pray for each of these men, and close to two dozen others like them, who
are seriously considering consecrated life as a Brother.

STORM HEAVEN TO PRESERVE FREEDOM OF RELIGION IN AMERICA
Seventy years ago, on 6 June 1944, thousands of Americans
and other people of Good-will stormed the shores of
Normandy and sacrificed their lives to renew the face of
Europe.
Two years ago, on 21 June 2012, millions of Catholics and other
people of Good-will in America, stormed Heaven and sacrificed
time, talent, and treasure that is renewing the face of America.
We the people believe that thousands of our American
ancestors didn’t sacrifice their lives on 6 June 1944 so “a government of the people by the people for
the people” could force the people of America to violate our consciences. Yet that is what the
Obama-government has done with the writing and
passage of the so-called “Affordable Care and Patient
Protection Act”. That is not good government and it is
not good healthcare.
Please storm Heaven with us again on 21 June 2014
when a Fortnight for Freedom returns to America from
“California to the New York Island; from the red wood
forest to the Gulf Stream waters” remembering as you
go “walking that Freedom highway” that “this land was
made for you and me”. Sacrifices were made to
establish it. And sacrifices must be made to preserve it.


News from Our Coordinator of Music Ministry
I am excited to announce that Our Holy Redeemer is going to sponsor a SUMMER CONCERT SERIES on the Nautical Mile
at 175 Woodcleft Avenue - "Home of Mass on the Waterfront".
The concerts will be every Wednesday evening (7:00 P.M. to 8:30 P.M.), from 16 July through 20 August. We have a
wide range of programs featuring Irish, Italian, Broadway, Pops, and Jazz. Our last show will be a Sacred/Americana
Finale, presented by our Parish choir and guest soloists.
The concerts are free to the public. Donations, as well as a free will offering at each program will be accepted. Please
see the poster located in the main vestibule of the church, where there will be a donation box each weekend. (Seating
will be available for those who need to be seated at each program).
We hope that many of you will come down to "the Mile" and consider having dinner before or after the show! Look for
discounts at several of the restaurants.
Please see our flier on the opposite page for programs and dates, and then read about our wonderful performers in the
church bulletin, on the weekend prior to each show.
WE ALWAYS NEED NEW CHOIR MEMBERS...HOW ABOUT YOU?!
Our choir was in full force during the past Christmas and Easter Seasons...and we are proud to be one of the few
parishes that provide a full choir at all of the Holy Week Liturgies. I thank all of our choir members for their dedication
to serve the Lord through singing. Unfortunately, we are losing many young members due to graduations, college, and
other commitments.
If you enjoy singing, PLEASE consider joining our choir, and begin by being a part of our closing concert on

PRAY FOR:
“You are Peter and upon this rock I will build
my Church” (See Matthew 16:13-19). The
Scriptures we read today show how St.
Peter was rescued from the power of
Herod, and St. Paul was protected from his
enemies. Both St. Peter and St. Paul
proclaim with their lives that Jesus is the
Messiah, the Son of the living God.
According to tradition St. Peter died a
martyr’s death in Rome, during the
persecution Nero launched in 64 AD. This
humble fisherman became the spokesman for the Apostles
and rightly deserves the title of “Prince of the Apostles.” Two
of the epistles found in the New Testament are ascribed to
him. He is considered the patron of fishermen.
According to tradition St. Paul was also martyred in Rome in
the year 67 AD. He had been a Pharisee and had persecuted
the Church, but was converted by Christ Himself and became
the “Apostle of the Gentiles.” St. Paul wrote most of the
epistles in the New Testament. He is the patron of the lay
apostolate, the Cursillo Movement, and Catholic Action; also
of Malta and Greece. Both St. Peter and St. Paul are the
principal patrons of Rome and are mentioned in the Roman
Canon.

More often than not, Saint Anthony is called upon when we cannot find something: (our keys, our wallet,
perhaps even our faith), but all of us know that there is much more about this man of faith that requires us to
have recourse to his intercession; that is of course if we want to belong more deeply to the Faith by which we
are called to know, love, and serve God in this world so that we can be happy with Him forever in the next.
That “much more” was identified on a number of occasions by Pope Saint John Paul II during his Pontificate.
Here is an excerpt of what His Holiness said on one of those occasions:
“He based his life on Christ. The Gospel virtues, particularly poverty of spirit, meekness, humility,
chastity, mercy, the courage of peace, were the constant themes of his preaching.
His witness was so shining that during my pilgrimage to his shrine in Padua on 12 September 1982, I
also wished to present him to the Church, like Pope Pius XII before me, as a "man of the Gospel."
Indeed Saint Anthony taught in an outstanding way how to make Christ and the Gospel a constant point
of reference in daily life and in private and public moral decisions: he suggested that everyone should
bolster his courage at this source for consistent and enticing proclamation of the message of salvation.”

RECIBAN EL ESPÍRITU, SEAN RENOVADOS,
Y
CAMBIEN LA FAZ DE LA TIERRA
Todos los que vinieron a casa a Nuestro Santo Redentor para las Misas del 7/8 de Junio de 2014 literalmente
vieron el rojo: sombreros rojos en las damas, corbatas rojas en los caballeros, camisas rojas en los muchachos y
vestidos rojos en las muchachas. Hasta los Sacerdotes y Diáconos iban de rojo. ¡Sí, todos vieron rojo, y todos
vieron algo especial!
Lo que hizo tan especial la celebración del domingo no fue la Celebración Universal del Pentecostés o nuestra
celebración local del Domingo de Corbata, Sombrero, y sin Pantalones de Vaquero. Esas dos celebraciones
quizás hayan sido la razón por la cual la gente vio rojo, pero lo que hace cada celebración dominical especial es
que los creyentes elevan su corazón al Señor orando: “Señor, envía Tu Espíritu, y renueva la faz de la tierra.”
Cada domingo el Espíritu Santo es enviado y renueva la Iglesia de Freeport. Cada Domingo los cónyuges son
renovados y se les envía a renovar la faz de la vida familiar; los gobernadores y alcaldes son renovados y se les
envía a renovar la faz del Gobierno; los médicos y las enfermeras son renovados y se les envía a renovar la faz
del Cuidado de la Salud; los maestros y estudiantes son renovados y se les envía a renovar la faz de la Educación;
los actores y las actrices son renovados y se les envía a renovar la faz del Entretenimiento. ¡Literalmente todos
los que vienen a casa son renovados y se les envía a renovarla faz
de la tierra!
Si como yo usted cree que algo especial sucede cada Domingo aquí
en Nuestro Santo Redentor, por favor acompáñeme a orar por los
cuatro hombres que eran ordenados como Sacerdotes el Sábado
14 de Junio en la Catedral de Santa Inés. Sus nombres son David
Atanasio, Christopher Mirabel, Joseph Scolaro, y James Shelton.
¡Mediante su participación en el Ministerio Sacerdotal podemos
estar seguros de que el Señor continuará enviando Su Espíritu y
renovando la faz de la tierra!

REFLEXIÓN SEMANAL
“Tú eres Pedro y sobre esta piedra edificaré mi iglesia” (Ver Mateo 16:13-19). Las Escrituras que leemos
hoy nos muestran cómo por medio de un ángel el Señor rescató a San Pedro del poder de Herodes y
como San Pablo fue rescatado de las manos de sus enemigos. Tanto San Pedro como San Pablo
proclamaron mediante sus vidas que Jesús era el Mesías, el Hijo del Dios vivo. Según la tradición San
Pedro murió una muerte de mártir en Roma durante la persecución que el emperador Nerón lanzó en
el año 64 de la era cristiana. Este humilde pescador llegó a convertirse en el portavoz de los apóstoles y
ciertamente merita el título de “Príncipe de los Apóstoles.” Dos de las epístolas del Nuevo Testamento
son atribuidas a él. Se le considera como patrón de los Pescadores.
Según la tradición San Pablo escribió la mayoría de las epístolas del Nuevo Testamento. El había sido
fariseo y había perseguido la iglesia, pero fue convertido por Cristo mismo y llegó a ser el “Apóstol de
los Gentiles.” San Pablo escribió la mayoría de las epístolas del Nuevo Testamento. El es patrón del
apostolado laico, del Movimiento Cursillo y de la Acción Católica; también de malta y de Grecia. Tanto San Pedro como San
Pablo son los patrones principales de Roma y ambos están mencionados en el Canon Romano.
