Mass on Sunday Christmas Season 2015-2016 came and went but not before the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, after the 5:00 P.M. Saturday Mass celebrating the Feast of the Lord’s Baptism, gathered over fifty people at Grover’s Dock on the Nautical Mile in Freeport for “Christmas Caroling with cookies, cocoa, and coffee at the Creche in the cold”. What a wonderful way to say goodbye to the Christmas Season. Please join me in thanking the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and the friends of Our Holy Redeemer (the Grovers, the Gallants, Les Endo, Lee Sparaco, and John Talty) who helped anyone and everyone passing by 175 Woodcleft Avenue to see what Christmas is all about throughout the entire Christmas Season! The Spirit of Generosity that beautified 175 Woodcleft Avenue this past Christmas also transformed the absolutely beautiful church at 37 South Ocean Avenue. That Spirit moved many of our registered parishioners to fill their annual “Flower Offering” envelope with more than enough treasure for us to purchase red and white poinsettia plants that “(two nights) before Christmas when all through the (church)”, Dianne and Bruce Wimbiscus, Joann Flaherty, Jane Dengel, Marlene Rangel, Judy Germaine, and Father Alessandro placed with Nativity statues in their proper perch. As we begin the Second Week in Ordinary Time, many of those plants can still be found gracing the church sanctuary: that preeminent place of prayer where we find closeness with God. All of us long to feel that closeness with God! There are times when that feeling escapes us and we are tempted to lose faith, to lose trust in God’s closeness. At these times we need to remain steadfast in faith, in the certainty of the truth and in full trust in God. We need to cry out and express our need for help and appeal to the other’s faithfulness; “crying out means making an act of faith in God’s closeness and in His willingness to listen” (cf. Benedict XVI, General Audience, 7 September 2011). When that feeling of closeness of God escapes us, might I (with our Pope Emeritus) encourage you to turn to Mary as they did at Cana. “Mary” writes Benedict XVI, “shares in this closeness of God. Being in God and with God, she is close to each one of us, knows our hearts, can hear our prayers, can help us with her Motherly kindness, and has been given to us, as the Lord said, precisely as a “mother” to whom we can turn at every moment” (Benedict XVI, Homily, 15 August 2005): at a wedding/Cana; at a Birth/Christmas; at a 5:00 P.M. Mass on a Sunday during the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy (8 December 2015 – 20 November 2016). The Jubilee Year of Mercy Jesus’' Message of God’'s Mercy: Mercy in the Scriptures with Auxiliary Bishop Andrzej Zglesjszewski Monday, 25 January 2016 7:30 p.m. Our Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church 37 South Ocean Avenue Freeport, New York 11520 For more information please call (516) 378-0665 OPTIONS FOR 22 JANUARY 2016 IF YOU DON’T ATTEND THE RESPECT LIFE PILGRIMAGE IN WASHINGTON D.C. At this moment, we lay all the obstacles that separate us from Your love at the foot of Your Cross. Roll back the stones which imprison us. Awaken us to Your Resurrection morning. There may we meet the brothers and sisters from whom we are separated. Amen. Day II: Called to be Messengers of Joy - God of love, look upon our willingness to serve You despite our spiritual poverty and limited abilities. Fulfill the deepest longings of our hearts with Your presence. Fill our broken hearts with Your healing love so that we may love as You have loved us. Grant us the gift of unity so that we may serve You with joy and share Your love with all. This we ask in the name of Your Son Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Day III: The Witness of Fellowship - Lord Jesus, Who prayed that we might all be one, we pray to You for the unity of Christians according to Your will, according to Your means. May Your Spirit enable us to experience the suffering caused by division, to see our sin and to hope beyond all hope. Amen. Day IV: A Priestly People Called to Proclaim the Gospel - Lord Jesus, You said that everyone will know that we are Your disciples if there is love among us. Strengthened by Your grace, may we work tirelessly for the visible unity of Your Church, so that the Good News that we are called to proclaim will be seen in all our words and deeds. Amen. Day V: The Fellowship of the Apostles - God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may You give to all Christians, and especially to those entrusted with leadership in Your Church, the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that with the eyes of our hearts we may see the hope to which You have called us: one body and one Spirit, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, Who is above and through all and in all. Amen. Day VI: Listen to this Dream - Heavenly Father, grant us humility to hear Your voice, to receive Your call, and to share Your dream for the unity of the Church. Help us to be awake to the pain of disunity. Where division has left us with hearts of stone, may the fire of Your Holy Spirit inflame our hearts and inspire us with the vision of being one in Christ, as he is one with You, so that the world may believe that You have sent Him. This we ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen. Day VII: Hospitality for Prayer - Lord Jesus, You asked Your Apostles to stay awake with You and to pray with You. May we offer the world protected times and spaces in which to find refreshment and peace, so that praying together with other Christians we may come to know You more deeply. Amen. Day VIII: Hearts Burning for Unity - Lord Jesus, You have made our hearts burn within us, and have sent us back upon the road towards our brothers and sisters, with the Gospel message on our lips. Help us to see that hope and obedience to Your commands always lead to the greater unity of Your people. Amen. www.vatican.va/roman_curia/pontifical_councils/chrstuni/weeks-prayer-doc/rc_pc_chrstuni_doc_20150526_week-prayer-2016_en.html FAITH AND EDUCATION SCHOOL’S IN: DRIVE CAREFULLY (both on and off the road) ST. MARTIN DE PORRES MARIANIST SCHOOL Growing in Wisdom, Faith, and Knowledge. Elementary Education in the Marianist Tradition OPEN HOUSE Saturday, 23 January 2016 NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL (516) 379-8660 Last week in this space you read about an activity at The De La Salle School that referenced STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education. This week we expand the curriculum and add an A to form STEAM. The A refers to Arts and includes music and art. At the Advent Prayer Service last month our student body constituted a choir, having been prepared by our music teacher, Mrs. Margo Rainone. During the singing of Little Drummer Boy some students demonstrated the percussion skills they learned. The Albert Neal, Sr. Arts Fund helped cover some costs associated with that activity. www.stmartinmarianist.org Mr. Alex Vera, our art teacher, has guided our students through a variety of projects. Two that are currently underway are special. One involves making screen prints and the other consists of creating sculpture with paper mache. These activities are special because a grant from the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport has provided the materials. For the work with paper mache we are fortunate to have the services of Ms. Laurie Horowitz an Artist in Residence also made possible through the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport. A Marianist Elementary School: Grades Pre-K through 8 Our students are enjoying these opportunities for creative expression. FAITH AND FINANCES PARISH FINANCE COUNCIL MEMBERS: Charles Shields III Joann Flaherty Donald Gallant Sheila Walsh “God will not be outdone in generosity.” ff What do you do when inclement weather or sickness prevents you from attending Sunday Mass at Our Holy Redeemer, or family/business obligations take you to Sunday Mass somewhere other than Our Holy Redeemer? More than likely, if you use Parish Envelopes to make your offering, you will place “Sunday-missed” envelopes in the Offertory basket the next time you attend Mass. If you don’t use envelopes, it is more than likely that your Sunday-missed offering will remain missing. It is not that you intentionally choose to give Our Holy Redeemer less, it’s just hard to intentionally give to Our Holy Redeemer what you think is more. “Stop thinking”; use envelopes or use E-Giving! E-Giving, like Offertory Envelopes (thank you for using them) provides you with a way of exercising faithful stewardship even when inclement weather or sickness prevents you from attending Sunday Mass at Our Holy Redeemer, or when family/business obligations take you to Sunday Mass somewhere other than Our Holy Redeemer. For more information about E-Giving either call the Rectory or visit the secure web site at www.e-giving.org. SCRIPTURE REFLECTION From its very beginning as today’s Gospel shows, (see John 2:1-11) the Church has honored Marriage as a Holy Institution. Jesus is present at the Marriage Feast in Cana. During that wedding feast He performed His first miracle. But there is more, His Blessed Mother, Mary, and His disciples are there also. It is very clear—Marriage is Holy—and we should consider it so. But there is much more here; notice that Mary is the one that tells Jesus that their wine (symbol of joy) is gone, prompting Jesus to make His first miracle. No question then that the Blessed Mother also honors the institution of Marriage and is an Advocate in behalf of married couples, always praying to her Divine Son so that joy may never fail in their lives. This Gospel then calls us to honor this institution both in our personal and family lives. It challenges us to do all we can to turn water into wine, that is, to do all we can to ensure the joy of both the members of our families and our neighbors. MORE FAITH AND PRAYER Please Pray for Our Priests O God, Who made Your Only Begotten Son eternal High Priest, grant that those He has chosen as ministers and stewards of Your mysteries may be found faithful in carrying out the ministry they have received. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. 18 January: 19 January: 20 January: 21 January: 22 January: 23 January: 24 January: Those Discerning Religious Life Father Angelo Ditta & Father James T. Donovan, S.J. Caridades Católicas: Programa WIC, 38 Saint John’s Place, Freeport, N. Y. 11520 DO WHATEVER HE TELLS YOU There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and His disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, how does your concern affect Me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever He tells you.” Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told them, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim. Saint John II: 1-7 Directions: Find the words below from today’s Scripture reading in the puzzle.
