The second Sunday of the month has arrived and so has Tie-One-On With A Hat And No Jeans Sunday at Our Holy Redeemer: the “once a month” event that encourages men to wear ties, women to wear hats, no one to wear jeans, and all of us who come home to Our Holy Redeemer to wear our Sunday best! This month, the month of October, Respect Life month (please join us on Thursday, 22 January for our annual Pilgrimage for Life to Washington, D.C.), and the month of the year dedicated to Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary (please come home on Friday, 17 October at 7:30 P.M. for our bi-annual candlelight Rosary procession), our monthly event occurs on a Sunday when the inspired Readings (in particular the Gospel) for Mass speak of the Biblical origins for Tie-One-On With A Hat And No Jeans Sunday at Our Holy Redeemer in Freeport! And so, what about our Mass attire? It may be true that the clothing doesn’t make the man, the woman, or the child, and it may be true that God doesn’t care what we wear to church, but the clothing does make a difference! In fact, how we clothe ourselves on the outside very often reveals something about how we are clothed on the inside. What internal disposition are we revealing when we dress no differently for church than we do for a trip to the mall, the beach, or even bed for that matter? Could it be that our casual dress, chosen merely for our own comfort and convenience, is a reflection of an equally casual, can't-bebothered attitude toward God Himself? The internal dispositions that our clothing should reveal to others are those which we would want God to see. Amongst these we could identify modesty, purity, and prudence. God certainly does not need these material expressions to know our hearts, but as for the rest of us, we do indeed look on the outward appearance, even when peering into our own mirrors. In this way the clothes we choose for church may have things to tell us about our hearts that God already knows, but that we (and those around us) need to hear. (If you want to hear more about today’s Parable, please turn to the Scripture Reflection of page 9.) Our internal and external states are very much related. The fact is, when it comes to how we clothe ourselves, our external appearance is often an expression of our internal state. Thus our Mass attire may not only say more than we think, it may in fact matter more than we think as well. So when the next Tie-One-On With A Hat And No Jeans Sunday arrives at Our Holy Redeemer (9 November) I hope you think about wearing your wedding garment dressed in your Sunday best! The Most Holy Rosary and Adoration for LIFE! Please Come Home and join the Nocturnal Adoration Society as they pray the Rosary and offer Eucharistic Adoration for LIFE! Our Holy Redeemer Adoration Chapel Tuesday, 14 October 2014 from 3:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. *Tuesday, 21 October 2014 from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. *English/Spanish NOW A WORD FROM OUR SAINTS (ABOUT THE FAMILY) APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION FAMILIARIS CONSORTIO OF POPE JOHN PAUL II TO THE EPISCOPATE TO THE CLERGY AND TO THE FAITHFUL OF THE WHOLE CATHOLIC CHURCH ON THE ROLE OF THE CHRISTIAN FAMILY IN THE MODERN WORLD (22 November 1981) PART ONE BRIGHT SPOTS AND SHADOWS FOR THE FAMILY TODAY The Need To Understand the Situation 4. Since God's plan for marriage and the family touches men and women in the concreteness of their daily existence in specific social and cultural situations, the Church ought to apply herself to understanding the situations within which marriage and the family are lived today, in order to fulfill her task of serving. This understanding is, therefore, an inescapable requirement of the work of evangelization. It is, in fact, to the families of our times that the Church must bring the unchangeable and ever new Gospel of Jesus Christ, just as it is the families involved in the present conditions of the world that are called to accept and to live the plan of God that pertains to them. Moreover, the call and demands of the Spirit resound in the very events of history, and so the Church can also be guided to a more profound understanding of the inexhaustible mystery of marriage and the family by the circumstances, the questions and the anxieties and hopes of the young people, married couples and parents of today. To this ought to be added a further reflection of particular importance at the present time. Not infrequently ideas and solutions which are very appealing but which obscure in varying degrees the truth and the dignity of the human person, are offered to the men and women of today, in their sincere and deep search for a response to the important daily problems that affect their married and family life. These views are often supported by the powerful and pervasive organization of the means of social communication, which subtly endanger freedom and the capacity for objective judgment. Many are already aware of this danger to the human person and are working for the truth. The Church, with her evangelical discernment, joins with them, offering her own service to the truth, to freedom and to the dignity of every man and every woman. Evangelical Discernment 5. The discernment effected by the Church becomes the offering of an orientation in order that the entire truth and the full dignity of marriage and the family may be preserved and realized. This discernment is accomplished through the sense of faith, which is a gift that the Spirit gives to all the faithful, and is therefore the work of the whole Church according to the diversity of the various gifts and charisms that, together with and according to the responsibility proper to each one, work together for a more profound understanding and activation of the word of God The Church, therefore, does not accomplish this discernment only through the Pastors, who teach in the name and with the power of Christ but also through the laity: Christ "made them His witnesses and gave them understanding of the faith and the grace of speech (cf. Acts 2:17-18; Rv. 19:10), so that the power of the Gospel might shine forth in their daily social and family life." The laity, moreover, by reason of their particular vocation have the specific role of interpreting the history of the world in the light of Christ, in as much as they are called to illuminate and organize temporal realities according to the plan of God, Creator and Redeemer. PRAYER FOR THE SYNOD ON THE FAMILY (5 October 2014 - 19 October 2014) The "supernatural sense of faith" however does not consist solely or necessarily in the consensus of the faithful. Following Christ, the Church seeks the truth, which is not always the same as the majority opinion. She listens to conscience and not to power, and in this way she defends the poor and the downtrodden. The Church values sociological and statistical research, when it proves helpful in understanding the historical context in which pastoral action has to be developed and when it leads to a better understanding of the truth. Such research alone, however, is not to be considered in itself an expression of the sense of faith. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in you we contemplate the splendour of true love, to you we turn with trust. Because it is the task of the apostolic ministry to ensure that the Church remains in the truth of Christ and to lead her ever more deeply into that truth, the Pastors must promote the sense of the faith in all the faithful, examine and authoritatively judge the genuineness of its expressions, and educate the faithful in an ever more mature evangelical discernment. Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families too may be places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic Churches. Christian spouses and parents can and should offer their unique and irreplaceable contribution to the elaboration of an authentic evangelical discernment in the various situations and cultures in which men and women live their marriage and their family life. They are qualified for this role by their charism or specific gift, the gift of the sacrament of matrimony. Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again experience violence, rejection and division: may all who have been hurt or scandalized find ready comfort and healing. Holy Family of Nazareth, may the approaching Synod of Bishops make us once more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God’s plan. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, graciously hear our prayer. Amen. The Situation of the Family in the World Today 6. The situation in which the family finds itself presents positive and negative aspects: the first are a sign of the salvation of Christ operating in the world; the second, a sign of the refusal that man gives to the love of God. On the one hand, in fact, there is a more lively awareness of personal freedom and greater attention to the quality of interpersonal relationships in marriage, to promoting the dignity of women, to responsible procreation, to the education of children. There is also an awareness of the need for the development of interfamily relationships, for reciprocal spiritual and material assistance, the rediscovery of the ecclesial mission proper to the family and its responsibility for the building of a more just society. On the other hand, however, signs are not lacking of a disturbing degradation of some fundamental values: a mistaken theoretical and practical concept of the independence of the spouses in relation to each other; serious misconceptions regarding the relationship of authority between parents and children; the concrete difficulties that the family itself experiences in the transmission of values; the growing number of divorces; the scourge of abortion; the ever more frequent recourse to sterilization; the appearance of a truly contraceptive mentality. … (To be continued next week . . .) First, we added a fourth day when the program is offered. Second, we provided various options if parents wished to augment homework tutoring with music lessons, sports clinics, and problem solving sessions. Despite the challenge of arranging transportation at the later hour enrollment in the Program has grown by 50% bringing the number of participants to thirty-six. It is no surprise that student grades improve when the young men have a teacher available to provide help when they encounter a challenge when doing their homework. It is also encouraging to see our students take advantage of opportunities to cultivate their skills in other areas in a safe environment with competent instructors. Only $30 a month provides our students with the benefits of our Extended Day Program. 12 October 2014 – The Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time A Sunday Readings: Isaiah XXV: 6-10a; Philippians IV: 12-14, 19-20; Saint Matthew XXII: 1-14 Student’s Name: ____________________________________________________ Class Day/Session: __________________________________________________ Catechist Name: ____________________________________________________ Mass Time (Circle One): Sat: 5:00 PM 7:00 PM Sun: 7:00 AM 8:00 AM 9:30 AM 11:30 AM 1:00 PM GOSPEL QUESTIONS: (Religious Education Students please answer ALL questions) What did Jesus say the Kingdom of Heaven may be likened to? “Jesus said the Kingdom of Heaven may be likened to ___________________________________________________________________________________________.” Did the king’s guests attend the feast? “The king’s guest _______________________________ attend the feast.” What did the king tell his servants to do when no one would come to the feast? “The king told his servants to ________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________.” What did the servants do? “The servants ____________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________.” What did the king do to the man who was not dressed in a wedding garment? “The king _________________________ ___________________________________ the man who was not dressed in a wedding garment.” ***Adult volunteers needed for entrance/exit school monitoring, please call our office. Jesus’ words in today’s Gospel help us to see that we must be found worthy of the Kingdom. We have been invited, but we must do all we can to accept the invitation and then with the help of the sacraments, the grace of God, and the intercession of our saints and the Blessed Virgin Mary, we must clean our lives and try to live the good life that God intends us to live. How can we do this? In the second reading St. Paul tells us: “I can do all things in Him who strengthens me” (See Philippians 4:12-20). We do not need to feel overwhelmed by the responsibility of becoming worthy of the Kingdom. God will supply the strength to do so if we trust in Him. What we need to do is to trust in God and let Him do His work. Why not follow Mary’s advice to, “Do whatever He tells you” (See John 2:1-11). Please Pray for Our Priests O God, Who made Your Only Begotten Son eternal High Priest, grant that those He has chosen as ministers and stewards of Your mysteries may be found faithful in carrying out the ministry they have received. FAITH AND THE ROMAN MISSAL WITH HELP FROM THE PASTOR AND POPE LEO XIII “For we have the record of not a few brave and experienced men, both before and after Christopher Columbus, who with stubbornness and zeal explored unknown lands and seas yet more unknown. And the memory of these, man, mindful of benefits, rightly holds, and will hold in honour; because they advanced the ends of knowledge and humanity, and increased the common prosperity of the race, not by light labour, but by supreme exertion, often accompanied by great dangers. But there is, nevertheless, between these and him of whom we speak, a generous difference. He was distinguished by this unique note, that in his work of traversing and retraversing immense tracts of ocean, he looked for a something greater and higher than did these others. We say not that he was unmoved by perfectly honourable aspirations after knowledge, and deserving well of human society; nor did he despise glory, which is a most engrossing ideal to great souls; nor did he altogether scorn a hope of advantages to himself; but to him far before all these human considerations was the consideration of his ancient faith, which questionless dowered him with strength of mind and will, and often strengthened and consoled him in the midst of the greatest difficulties. This view and aim is known to have possessed his mind above all; namely, to open a way for the Gospel over new lands and seas. …” … “And if (Christopher Columbus) moved Ferdinand and Isabella to decree that only Catholic Christians should be suffered to approach the New World and trade with the natives, he brought forward as reason, "that he sought nothing from his enterprise and endeavour but the increase and glory of the Christian religion." And this was well known to Isabella, who better than any had understood the great man's mind; indeed it is evident that it had been clearly laid before that most pious, masculine-minded, and great-souled woman. For she had declared of Columbus that he would boldly thrust himself upon the vast ocean, "to achieve a most signal thing, for the sake of the Divine glory." And to Columbus himself, on his second return, she writes: "That the expenses she had incurred, and was about to incur, for the Indian expeditions, had been well bestowed; for thence would ensure a spreading of Catholicism." Call Joanne Stuhlinger at (516) 546-1057 for more information A ‘JUST WAR’ EXPLAINED (SAINT ROBERT BELLARMINE-DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH) “Those who treat of such matter usually enumerate four conditions of a just war, lawful authority, a just cause, a good intention, and a suitable method. But each must be discussed by itself.” Continued from Sunday, 5 October . . . THE THIRD CONDITION: GOOD INTENTION (CONTINUED) Secondly, it should be noted that this third condition differs from the two preceding, because if these are absent they make the war unjust, but if this last is absent it makes the war evil, but not, strictly speaking, unjust. For whosoever begins a war without authority or without a just cause, sins not only against charity, but also against justice, and he is not so much a soldier as a robber; but he who has authority and a just cause, and yet makes war from a love of revenge, or the desire of increasing his domain, or for any other evil motive, does not act against justice, but only against charity, and is not a robber, but a wicked soldier. From which it follows that when this third condition alone is lacking, neither soldiers nor kings are bound to any restitution, but only to repentance; but when the first or the second is lacking, all are bound to repair the damage inflicted, unless they are excused by reason of invincible ignorance; for just as gross and culpable ignorance does not excuse from sin, so neither does it excuse from restitution, as appears in the last chapter on injuries and the loss inflicted. But he who acts in invincible ignorance is not bound to restitution while he so acts, but when he recognizes that the war is unjust he is bound to restitution, not for injury inflicted during the war, but he is if through that war he has acquired anything that does not belong to him; and if he has taken no money, but yet has become richer by the sale of goods, he is bound to make restitution to the extent to which he has enriched himself; for he cannot retain the property of another, even if by reason of ignorance he has acquired it without sin, but restoration should be made either to the original owner, if he is known, or to the poor. (Continued next week . . . ) ADDRESSING CRIME IN FREEPORT An Open Letter from Mayor Kennedy Although the overall crime statistics have decreased in Freeport in 2014, several recent crimes within the Village require special attention and considerations from our Police Department and this administration. In effort to discourage and prevent these crimes, I have: 1. Implemented a new program wherein license plate readers, security cameras, and additional electronic equipment be installed in strategic locations. This will enable immediate notification to the Police Department of pending violators as well as providing additional information for investigative purposes when a crime has been committed. 2. We hired a Police Department statistician to join with Nassau County Police and other law enforcement agencies to develop future predictions on crime types and locations. 3. I have requested our Legal Department to aggressively address the removal of persons considered “public nuisances” and affecting the quality of life for our neighbors and Village of Freeport residents. 4. I have directed the Police Department to affix several links on their website to include: a calendar link that will allow all civic groups to contact the Police Department and invite a representative to their meetings; crime prevention regular updates; and quarterly crime statistics for the Village of Freeport. 5. The Village of Freeport will secure the services of a consulting firm to assist this administration in preventing crime, providing safer neighborhoods, and community involvement. This administration is committed to providing a safe community for all families. The Freeport Police Department will continue to provide the expert, professional, respectful, and proficient law enforcement as it has in the past and continues into the future. Jesus spoke to the chief priests and elders again in parables, saying, “The Kingdom of Heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come. … The king sent his servants out into the streets and they gathered all they could find, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled with guests. When the king came in, he saw a man not dressed in a wedding garment. The king said to him, “My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?” But he was reduced to silence. The king had his hands and feet bound and then thrown into the darkness. Many are invited, but few are chosen.
