May15, 2016 2 OUR PASTOR’S PAGE Pentecost 2016 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, When we think of the times the church is most full, we think of Christmas and Easter (or Guadalupe for the Hispanics!). But today’s celebration of Pentecost should be up there among the most well-attended Masses during the liturgical year. Why? Because in the hierarchy of the Church’s feasts, Pentecost is second only to Easter. (Most people think Christmas is second to Easter, but interestingly Epiphany and Pentecost are considered more important feasts than Christmas.) So, why is the church not as full today as at Christmas and Easter? Maybe because we have forgotten the importance of the Holy Spirit — that He is not just some vague force, but that He is the Third Person of the Most Blessed Trinity. Just as at Christmas we celebrate the eternal Son of God becoming flesh in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, so Pentecost is a celebration of the Holy Spirit taking flesh in the Body of Christ — the Church — in us as His members at work in the world. In the Nicene Creed on Sundays, we say: “I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life.” What does it mean that the Holy Spirit “gives life”? Yes, of course we owe our biological life to God — and the Holy Spirit is intimately connected with creation as evidenced in Genesis 1. However, we know that the Holy Spirit gives us supernatural life. He is grace! So, what does this have to do with real life? The answer is: everything. God’s commandments to love, to grow in virtue, to be holy are not just nice directives for us to remember, but He gives us Himself through the Holy Spirit to guide our thoughts, words and actions in real life. Yes, we still have temptations, and yes, we still sin, but it does not mean the Holy Spirit is not present in our lives; and it does not mean the Holy Spirit is not there to assist us in our daily struggles with the world, the flesh, and the devil. (Our choices to commit evil are just that: our choices!). Hopefully, you prayed for a special grace or favor during the past nine days — a gift of the Holy Spirit. If not, why not ask Him today to “fire you up” in your Catholic faith? If you are bored or lukewarm in your faith, it is only because you want to be! Jesus says we do not have to stay there, though. Jesus wants us to be saints — holy ones — and the ultimate tragedy in this world is to not to have been one. Ask the Holy Spirit to make you a saint today: a saint in our little Catholic community, a saint in your family, a saint in your marriage, and a saint who will bring the Light of Christ to a world that desperately needs it. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Amen. Yours in Christ, Fr. Amen. Suyo en Cristo, Pr. Lowry 4 Daily Readings/Lecturas del Día Please keep in your hearts and MONDAY • Jas 3:13-18; Ps 19:8, 9, 10, 15; Mk 9:14-29 TUESDAY • Jas 4:1-10; PS 55:7-8, 9-10a, 10b-11a, 23; Mk 9:30-37 WEDNESDAY • Jas 4:13-17; PS 49:2-3, 6-7, 8-10, 11; Mk 9:38-40 THURSDAY • Jas 5:1-6; PS 49:14-15ab, 15cd-16, 17-18, 19-20; Mk 9:41-50 FRIDAY • Jas 5:9-12; PS 103:1-2, 3-4, 8-9, 11-12; Mk 10:1-12 SATURDAY • Jas 5:13-20; PS 141:1-2, 3 and 8; Mk 10:13-16Mk 10:13-16 MINISTRY SCHEDULE for the weekend of MINISTRY SCHEDULE for the weekend of Saturday Saturday May 21 4:30 pm Acolyte: Ron Williams Altar Server: EMHCs: JoyceWilliams Mary Forester Reader: Kathy Deupree Usher: Mary Cothern Mary Waddell 6:00 pm Monaguillos: Luis Miguel & Evelin Mota MESC: Verónica García & Raquel Cleto Lector: Celia Reyes Acomodador: Guille & José Rosas May 14 4:30 pm Acolyte: Ron Williams Altar Serve: EMHCs: Nancy Pitts Mary Forester Reader: Gail St Clair Usher: 6:00 pm Monaguillos: Jose & Samanta Gutierrez MESC: Raquel Cleto & Nahum Rincon Lector: Raquel Cleto Acomodador: Eva & Miguel Reyes Sunday May 15 8:00 am Acolyte: Ron Williams Altar Servers: John-James-Samuel Vogt EMHC: Jaime Chairez Joyce Williams Reader: Mike Krehel Usher: 10:30 am Altar Servers: Nathan & Tucker Hall EMHC: Danny & Yvonne Sparks Reader: Maria Hebert Usher: Jerry Gandy & Virginia Gandy 12:30 pm Monaguillos: Gerardo Reyes & Giomar Lector: Florentino Guerrero MESC: Celia Reyes & Veronica Garcia Acomodador: Antonio & Jaime García MASS INTENTIONS/INTENCIONES DE LAS MISAS Saturday 4:30 p.m. † 6:00 p.m. Sunday 8:00 a.m.† Rick Hirsch † Roy Graham 10:30 a.m. 12:00 p.m.† Monday 6:00 p.m. Tuesday 6:00 p.m. Thursday 6:00 p.m. Friday 6:00 p.m. Sunday May 22 8:00 am Acolyte: Ron Williams Altar Servers: Nathan & Tucker Hall EMHC: Jaime Chairez Al Chandanais Reader: Denise Garner Usher: Wally & Walt Mahmoud 10:30 am Altar Servers: Nahum Rincon EMHC: Yvonne Sparks & Danny Sparks Reader: Fran Bardwell Usher: Bob & Judy Garrett 12:30 pm Monaguillos: Jaime & Santiago Garcia MESC: Alfonso & Aurora M.
