MISSION
STATEMENT
To provide nutritious
meals, socialization,
health screening, and
education. We act as
a catalyst for access,
opportunity, health
and independence
for older adults.
Dear Dad,
I just wanted to tell you _________________.
No matter what your relationship is, or was, with your own dad, you probably filled in the
blank space with your own thought very quickly.
On Sunday, June 21, Father's Day 2015 will be recognized as a national holiday. And,
although the traditional roles of fathers may differ across cultures and change over the
years, one thing remains the same; That is the impact a father can have on the life of a
child.

Are you someone's father or 'father figure?' If you are
a new dad, a grandfather or a great-grandfather, we mothers
and children want to say Thank You. Speaking from
experience, the very best memories I have of my own dad
(who is still alive and still making memories!) are a collection
of many small events. I recall conversations, learning to
drive, catching my first fish, his appearance at my swimming
meet to cheer me on, and a very stern look when I walked in
the door as I arrived home – late - after an evening with high
school friends.
If it has been a long time since you talked to your dad, I
encourage you to pick up the phone or send a card. It may
be a difficult step but it will go a long way for both of you.
If your dad isn’t around any longer, consider calling or
encouraging another father in your family, your neighborhood
or your church.

Being a great father
is like shaving.
No matter how
good you
shaved today,
you have to do it
again tomorrow.

The gestures you believe are insignificant may be some
of the most memorable.

Could Exercise Improve Your Health Problem?
Many people think of exercise as a way to get fit. And while regular exercise can improve fitness, it can also
have a positive impact on health conditions that commonly occur as we age. What if your health problem
could be improved by stepping up your physical activity?
Making exercise a regular part of your daily routine will have a positive impact on your health and your
quality of life as you get older. Staying physically active and exercising regularly can




help improve mood and reduce feelings of depression
help manage or improve diabetes
help manage or improve heart disease
help manage or improve some types of cancer.
Exercise also helps people with high blood pressure, balance problems, or difficulty walking.
Being physically active can also help you stay strong and fit enough to keep doing the things you like to do
and stay independent as you get older. For example, improving endurance can make it easier to work in the
garden. Increasing muscle strength can make it easier to lift a grandchild or climb stairs. Improving balance
helps prevent falls, and being more flexible can help you reach for items on kitchen shelves.
Exercise Programs offered at The Terrace:

Tai Chi teaches graceful and relaxing movements
that can improve your balance, strength and
mobility. It is considered one of the most beneficial
exercises for older adults.

CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning program
that optimizes your cardiovascular and respiratory
endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, agility and
balance.

Stretch Program is a slow and gentle exercises
designed to increase range of motion, flexibility and
mobility.

Strength Program maintains muscle mass, bone
density (to prevent osteoporosis and fractures), and
Balance
More information about the Terrace exercise classes can be found on page 6 & 7.
For more on the everyday benefits of exercise, see "Real-Life Benefits of Exercise and Physical Activity"
from Go4Life®, the exercise and physical activity campaign from the National Institute on Aging.

The Terrace at Ruby View
Before Jim’s first wife passed away, she had created cookbooks
for her daughters and him. These cook books were filled with
the family’s favorites recipes along with some new ones.
Over the years Jim has prepared many of the recipes from his
cook book, but his absolute favorite recipe is the Beefy Mexican
Lasagna. Jim’s reason, “It's quick, easy & makes great leftovers
for lunch!”
Once in a while Jim likes to shake things up. Instead of using
the canned tomatoes, he will use fresh tomatoes from his
garden. If the mood hits him and he wants to spice things up, he
may add a fresh chopped onion, garlic or maybe some peppers,
also from his garden.
This dish is not only simple, but impressive. His current wife,
Danielle recalled the first time that she ever had the dish. A few
years back, before Jim and Danielle started dating, she and her
daughter came down with a cold. Being a caring kind of guy,
Jim made his casserole for them so Danielle wouldn’t have to
worry about cooking dinner. Not only was this one of the best
things Danielle ever tasted, the both of them loved it so much
that they had it for breakfast the next morning.
Please join us for this unique dish on Friday, June 12th.
Jim Yroz

newcomer to their predominantly Latino high
school. Coach White and the McFarland students
have a lot to learn about each other, but things
begin to change when White sees the boys'
exceptional running ability. Something beyond
their physical gifts becomes apparent-the power
of family relationships, their unwavering
commitment to one another and their incredible
work ethic. With grit and determination, the
unlikely band of runners eventually overcomes
the odds to forge not only a championship team,
but an enduring legacy as well. Along the way,
Coach White realizes that his family has finally
found a place to call home, as he and his team
achieve their own kind of American dream.
