YEAR 7 BURRS ACTIVITY WEEK
Year 7 were invited to attend Burrs Activity Centre
for their teambuilding week last week.
All children participated in 4 activities : Canoeing;
Cross River Challenge; Team Building Puzzles and
the dreaded Leap of Faith!
Some of the pupils went with real fears of heights
and water but conquered those fears, which was most impressive. The attitude and
behavior, along with the pupils willingness and eagerness to work as a team, when solving
puzzles and supporting each other was fantastic.
Hopefully they enjoyed the week and didn‘t mind the instructors tendency to chuck them
into the freezing water!
Well done Year 7!
Welcome to the Walkden Family.

MEET THE NEW STAFF IN CORE ZONE
ENGLISH & MATHEMATICS
Miss Phillip
Mathematics Teacher
I gained my degree at UClan
and my PGCE from
the University of Cumbria,
and have previously worked
in a school in Nelson.
Prior to teaching I had various roles within the
financial services sector.
I am delighted to be working with the pupils
of Walkden High School and looking forward to
meeting parents at the up and coming parents
evenings.
In my free time I like to go on walks with my
dog and I enjoy holidaying in Scotland.
Miss Tye
Mathematics Teacher
After I graduated university from my maths degree,
I went to MMU to study my
PGCE. Since then, I have
worked in a couple of
schools in Bolton, Little
Lever Business School and
Canon Slade School.
I am very excited about my new
appointment here at Walkden and am
looking forward to an exciting few years
ahead of us and meeting you at parents
evening.
Ms Glynn - English Teacher
I am an English specialist, here at Walkden to teach Year 8 English and Reading sessions and
to provide intervention for those who are falling behind their targets. I am currently working
with small groups of year 9, 10 and 11 students to tackle spelling problems, a group of year
10 to improve writing skills and year 11s who need extra support with coursework. I work
here three days a week and over at All Hallows for the other two.
After working in one school for 15 years, I relish this opportunity to work with so many different young people from such diverse backgrounds.
In my leisure time, I can be found in the garden or out walking on the moors.
Miss Jolly
English Teacher
I have worked with young
people and within
education for a number of
years now and have lived
within the Worsley
community all of my life.
I am very excited to be a part of the Walkden
High team and look forward to passing on my
passion for English to all of our students.
I have engineered the Walkden High Spelling
Bee club and a Shakespeare festival will be
up and running soon. Both I hope will be
beneficial to student's education whilst making learning interesting and fun!
Miss Trigwell
English Teacher
I arrived at Walkden High
School as part of the
English department in
September 2014. Both
pupils and staff have been
very welcoming and I have
enjoyed becoming a part
of the school as a whole. Before coming to
this school, I studied Law at the University of
Sheffield, but have always had a deep passion
for English, so decided to retrain to become
an English teacher! I look forward to
contributing to the development of each child
at Walkden High School both in the classroom
and outside of it. From the short time I've
been here, I have seen already that Walkden
pupils really are STARS!
MEET THE DATA TEAM
NICK KOOPMAN
Data Manager
Hi, I’m Nick, the person in
charge of managing all the
school’s official data; making sure all the records are up to date and that
information can be found as quickly as possible
to ensure the smooth running of the school .
I don’t just do data though; I have also worked
on a large number of community projects and
care very deeply about ensuring our pupils get
the best education possible.
I am also interested in politics and have stood
in local council elections. I keep very busy supporting and volunteering at a local football club
and playing ice hockey whenever possible. My
best claim to fame is being an Olympic
Torchbearer, for London 2012.
Oh, I only have one golden rule at work: the
bosses’ jokes are ALWAYS funny.
CLAIRE BANTON
System Support Officer
My main roles within school
are looking after Exams and
Admissions.
I began work in the Insurance Industry,
where I worked for over 10 years but for the
last 12 years I have worked in 3 different
schools holding many different roles from
Exams Officer, Office Manager, PA and Clerk
to Governors (sometimes several at once)!!
I have a son who is 12 years old and has just
started Senior School this year. Most of my
spare time is spent being his taxi driver and
through him I have become a helper at Scouts
and at his Theatre Group (front of house only
for me though)!
We have a puppy called Buddy and we spend
lots of time out walking with him at weekends
with our friends.
Salford Children’s Book Award
I was lucky enough to be part of this year‘s short listing panel for the Salford Children‘s Book Award. 6
books have been chosen from a list of 17 contenders. Now it is up to you!
The SCBA has been running for over 10 years; it is a chance for YOU to have your say! All you need to
do is read the 6 books and vote for your favourite. If you want to take part, please come along to ROFL
(Reading Our Favourite Literature) Club in the LRC on Wednesdays after school. Anyone who takes part
will be eligible to visit the Lowry in March to meet the authors, ask them questions and see the winner announced. The ceremony is a wonderful event that celebrates children‘s authors and reading for pleasure; it
never fails to be a pleasurable time! I know that those who took part last year are eagerly awaiting the
arrival of the new books (they have been ordered!). I have read
the books as per the picture which are on this years shortlist and
can honestly say I enjoyed them all! I do have a favourite but I
will wait until February to cast my vote!
To take part please attend the ROFL Club
Learning Resource Centre (LRC)
Wednesdays @ 3:15pm – 4:15pm
For all LRC updates, please follow us on Twitter @LRCWaldenHS
YEAR 11 CHARITY LAUNCH
This week in school we have launched the ―Year 11 Charity‖. The Year 11s are going
to lead the whole school, over the course of the academic year, in a series of charity
fund-raising events.
The chosen charity is ―When You Wish Upon A Star‖. The aim is for the whole
school community to raise £7,000. This will enable the children in their final year at
Walkden High School to send a ‗poorly‘ child and their family to have a two week
holiday of a lifetime in Florida. The child will get the opportunity to swim with
dolphins and spend those special moments together a s a family creating memories
that will last a life time for the family.
The first challenge is to get everyone, pupils, staff, parents, carers and the wider
community to donate £1 for the ‗Charity Bade‘. This will raise of £1,500.
The Year 11s will be asking pupils and staff to donate 50p on 50p Friday. This will
happen once a months with the possibility of accruing £750 per month.
The potential total is £7,500.
Each half term will see a fund-raising opportunity in school. Ideas so far include

Y11 vs Staff Bush Tucker Trial

Y7 Christmas Disco

Onesie Day

Tesco Bag-packing.
Not to be out done, the staff are getting involved with 6 members of staff cycling
1,000 miles from Lands End to John O‘Groat‘s which will happen at Whit next year.
Over the course of the year there will be regular updates as to how the Y11s are
progressing towards their targets.
If you, or the company you work for, are able to support the Y11s in anyway, no
matter how big or small, then please get in touch with Mr Moseley by e-mail to:
[email protected] or speak to a Y11.

YEAR 9 FOOTBALL - 1 week, 2 very different matches
Thursday 18th September
After winning the Salford Schools Cup in 2013 – 2014 Walkden were entered into the English Schools
Cup and faced a tricky home tie against Holy Family School, Sefton.
The match was is a bit of blur to be honest and not one for any faint hearted Walkden fan! The boys
started slowly and struggled to get the quick passing football which had characterised their previous title
winning season. A free kick just inside their opponents half broke the deadlock for Walkden as Dom
Jones stepped up and lobbed the keeper from great distance. He tells me he meant it so who am I to
disagree. The less said about the Walkden High defending the better in this game as Holy Family
answered each of our goals with an equaliser until the score reached 4-4. A special mention must go to
Max Bottomley who ran tirelessly throughout the game and was rewarded for all his hard work with a
well taken hat trick , the highlight was a lovely struck free kick in the second half. Unfortunately in the
last 4 minutes Walkden gave away a penalty which was converted and the game finished 5-4.
Lots of valuable lessons learnt in this game which we will take forward into our league campaign. I can‘t
fault the boys for effort.
Final Score – Walkden 4 – Holy Family 5
Monday 22nd September
Walkden returned to league action against Moorside at home this week looking to repeat last year‘s
success.
Playing a new formation we would look to keep the ball more and play more football. The boys were
immediately into their rhythm and the central midfield of Brooks, Reeves and Shrayne bossed the game
creating several chances for the team.
The wingbacks of Jones and Pollit repeatedly attacked Moorside who really struggled to cope with their
pace and trickery. The back 3 looked solid throughout the game even when we made changes during the
game. After much hard work Liam Lawlor found himself in the box and cooly slotted the ball into the net.
The second goal came from the head of Jamie Pollitt after Max Bottomley had delivered a lovely ball
from out wide to the back post. Half time came and the boys agreed more of the same in the second half
was needed. Adam Durkin switched from centre back to right wing and caused the defence no end of
trouble. The 3rd and final goal of the game came from Cole Fairhurst who latched on to a shot come cross
and tucked the ball away neatly.
Final Score – Walkden 3 – Moorside 0
Walkden Squad for both games :
Tom Barlow , Jason Ziyambi, Tom Reeves (C), James Tipping, Max Chande, Daniel Godson, Dom Jones,
Danny Shrayne, Luke Brooks, Liam Lawlor, Max Bottomley, Jamie Pollitt, Ben Thornton, Thomas Hall,
Adam Durkin, Cole Fairhurst, Ross Burns.
LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE (LRC)
Library Update
Book Buzz
This year, we have welcomed our new year 7 students with a free book
thanks to Book Buzz! Each pupil chose a free book from a list of 12.
Some found the decision very hard, being torn between several titles!
These books have now arrived in school so look out for
Miss Martyniuk in your English lessons!
Please remember there are 2 or more copies of each book in the LRC so if you want to take
on the challenge of reading all 12, pop in and loan the books from Miss Martyniuk!
And finally ..
We have launched our whole school charity, When You Wish Upon A Star, this week in assemblies. Mr Moseley has delivered these assemblies showing us all the impact
that donations to this charity can have on children and their families.
We are proud to support When You Wish Upon A Star, which is a local
charity – it is based in Stockport. By a lucky coincidence one of the charity
fundraisers is a young woman that I once taught many moons ago!
As well as fundamentally supporting the charity‘s aims, we also feel that it
matches our Walkden STARS ethos. We are developing key qualities in our
young people here. We want them to be
Sensible, Thoughtful, Ambitious, Respectful, Supportive
We believe that by working with this charity, with the whole school, we will
develop many of these qualities whilst also supporting and helping families
that are in situations that many of us would find incredibly difficult to deal
with.
We are running a totaliser for our fundraising and you can see that we are
aiming to raise £7,000 for our school charity this year. We hope you will
help your child being part of this fantastic effort. Let‘s make our children
STARS.
