MEET MR TOOGOOD, ASSISTANT ZONE LEADER—DISCOVERY
My name is Mr Toogood and I am Assistant Head of Discovery Zone.
I also teach Astronomy, Physics and Science. I have worked at Walkden
High School since 2002 and I am extremely passionate about Science
(especially about Physics and very especially about Astronomy).
I was born in Winchester but spent my younger days in Manchester, Bristol
and Brighton before travelling the world and this is why I have a somewhat
'confused' accent. In my travelling days I was able to visit many countries
including 6 months in East Africa and a year in Australia. I was also lucky
enough to try a huge number of different jobs during my travels and this has helped me to realise how
lucky I am in the job I now have!
My interest in Physics stems from my own school days where my Physics teacher inspired me to continue
my studies and I went on to University to study Physics with Astronomy. After university I decided to
travel and spent most of the next four years doing this before settling down in Manchester. At this point I
decided to complete my PGCE course and was offered a job at the old Walkden High School whilst still
training. I have been at Walkden ever since and love the school and its pupils.
During my time at Walkden I have undertaken many roles from Gardening to 'Rocket Days' and I was
even lucky enough to visit the particle accelerator at CERN. I have always sought to teach Physics and
Astronomy through the passion I feel for the subjects and I am pleased to say that many of my former
pupils have gone on to study Physics or Astronomy. Of course I eagerly await the day when one of my
ex-pupils becomes an Astronaut!
The Creative Zone Showcase - Tuesday 19th June 6.00pm til 7.30pm
Parents and pupils from all years are welcome to attend.
It is an ideal opportunity for pupils in years 8, 9 and 10 who are doing a creative subject as a GCSE
or have just chosen one as an option for next year to attend, so that they can see the projects and
final pieces for Art and all Technology subjects.

Fund Raiser - During the recent hot spell Marco Polo house took advantage and organised an ice lolly sale at break
and lunchtimes. Our thanks go to Natasha Boyd who raised £40.90 which will go towards our "House Charity".

YEAR 10 VISIT TO SALFORD COLLEGE
Year 10 pupils visited Pendleton and Eccles Colleges in advance of decision making for September
2013.
Pupils were congratulated by college staff on their behavior, enthusiasm and interest. Walkden High
School staff were also proud to be associated with a group of attentive and receptive pupils. The
visit allowed pupils to experience courses at the next level and also new courses such as Animal
Care and Photography.
Well done Year 10!
We will give advance notice of College Open Evenings during 2013 so that parents can visit with
their sons/daughters.

We are currently looking forward to LMA High School musical performance which takes place in July with four of Westwood students securing leading roles; more info to follow.

EXPRESSION ZONE:
The dancers from the school production of Fat Sam’s Grand Slam received
a special reward for their hard work and commitment to rehearsals. They
were invited to be part of the studio audience for Aleisha Dixon’s Street
Dance Stars, which will be shown on the B.B.C later on in the year.
The pupils had a great time, many won B.B.C. pens for participating in
dance quizzes which involved pupils dancing in front of the live audience
to guess the dance, well done Sky McNeil and Olivia Axon. A special well
done to Georgia Ainley who held Aleisha Dixon’s hand as she challenged the audience to a dance off. Nobody dared
to dance against Georgia who then was lead on stage to dance in front of the four judges who included ‘Turbo’ and
Lizzie Gough!
The pupils appreciated a performance from four street crews from around the country and then after several takes got
to practice screaming and cheering in front of the cameras. Although I do have to say some pupils didn’t need any
practice at being loud, I will name nobody!
It was a great afternoon and the long wait to go into the studio was worth it.

Cricket Review
Junior XI – Unbeaten Run Continues and into Lancashire Cup Last 16
The Walkden Junior XI made progress to the Last 16 of the U13 Lancashire Cup with a 6-wicket victory over
Chorlton High School. Played on a scorcher of an afternoon at Roe Green, Chorlton opted to bat first but slumped to
13-4 in the first 10 overs. A late rally from the middle order pushed the final total up to 59-7 with Brad Johnson and
Harry Pine both taking 2 wickets. The boys now face a trip to Bolton School for a place in the Quarter Finals, with the
game taking place on Monday 18th June 1.00pm start.
The night before, Walkden secured a comfortable 7 wicket victory over Moorside in the Salford Schools’ League.
Batting first, Moorside posted a competitive total of 79-8, with Louis Ayre claiming figures of 4-16. In reply, Toby
Morgan’s fluent 43 saw the Junior XI to their target with 4 overs to spare.
Senior XI – Super Sixes sweep St Ambrose aside
Walkden’s Senior XI travelled to Swinton Moorside CC to face St Ambrose Barlow on Tuesday night and despite both
sides having only 9 players, managed to play out a great game. Batting first, St Ambrose were reduced to 18-3 inside 3
overs but recovered well to post a decent total of 84-7. The Walkden
attack claimed a wicket a piece and Tom Waring’s run out completed a
good fielding effort. Walkden’s reply started slowly but was given life
when Josh Ennis and Joel Pine put on 40 together and Liam Needham’s
late cameo took Walkden to their target with 23 balls to spare.
Next up for the Senior XI is St Georges on Tuesday 19th at Roe Green.

EXPRESSION ZONE:
Year 7 ‘Dream Teams’!
Following on from our success at the Salford Schools’ Athletic Championships, a group of Year 7 pupils
returned to Cleavley track to take part in a “Quad Athlete” competition.
The teams made up of five boys and five girls, then had to participate on an individual basis in four events:100 metres, 800 metres, a vortex throw and long jump. Points were awarded in relation to times/distance,
each event carrying a maximum of 100 points.
Walkden pupils excelled and were winners of both the boys and girls competitions.
They now go forward as Salford representatives to the Greater Manchester competition in July.

And finally....
I hope you had an enjoyable and restful half-term break. Some of the press thought the BBC commentary
on the flotilla on the Thames was very poor. I say the simplest thing to have done would have been to
switch the telly off. But then I’m a bit old fashioned like that.
I mention this because after a holiday, children sometimes forget that there is a difference between holiday
routines and school routines and I want to mention one in particular – the use of mobile devices. I would
like you to remind your child that they are quite privileged in being allowed to use their mobile devices
during break and lunch. Also, that they should not have their mobile devices out during lesson time, unless
a teacher has told them that they are needed for the lesson. I feel this is fair and clear.
Mobile devices OK during social time – Mobile devices away during lesson time.
Going back to the coverage of the flotilla on the Thames, if we didn’t like it we could switch it off or talk
over it – it’s a TV programme. No one is offended by us ignoring a TV programme.
If a student’s mobile goes off during a lesson it disrupts the lesson – it’s a live event. All of the students in
the class are distracted, concentration broken, and learning time lost forever. The teacher will be annoyed
that their lesson has been interrupted and that they then have to confiscate the mobile device for five days.
I know you all understand why we are concerned about this and support us when we confiscate your child’s
mobile device.
