WELCOME to our newsletter— we hope you had a great BSW with plenty of exciting
science happening. The aim of this newsletter is to bring you ideas that we have come
across in our travels, share good resources and let you know what we are
getting up to. You can find an archive of previous issues of this
newsletter on our website. We have a report on our week in Ellesmere Port
and some things that are going on during the summer term science

A Week in Ellesmere Port
HELEN
We spent a week in March at the National Boat Museum Ellesmere Port with the team from IGNITE
TSA at St Bernard’s RC school sharing science with pupils from the area.
This STEM event happens every other year for upper KS2 pupils. There were quite a number of providers covering art in science, maths games, building towns, slime, rockets……...
We delivered 5 workshops every day looking at smart materials, amazing gadgets and gizmos but of
course it wouldn't be us if we didn’t make bath bombs!! We think we made over 600 during the
week!!! Lots of schools were Tweeting about their day so our Twitter feed was buzzing.

Website of the Month
You might have noticed that we enjoy the posters from Compound Interest which can
be printed out or used on a whiteboard. They have created a range of bags, mugs,
notebooks and cushions with images from their posters and some of the most
important molecules ….coffee, chocolate , aspirin. They also have some of the posters like this one from
their colourful chemicals range. Love the bag!

Show of the Month
ALL ABOUT YOU
This month we are featuring a super show for Primary schools
across both key stages. All About You looks at being healthy
and how we can keep clean.
For the youngest pupils we bring along our third team
member Timmy the puppet who gets help to organise his
lunchbox so that he can eat healthily. Great if you are part of the Healthy Schools
scheme.
We look at our amazing senses and how they help us, with brave vol-
unteers choosing feely tubs or grot bags to put their hands into. For slightly older
ones we do a mass experiment to see how we are all unique.
For the gross effect we discover just how much snot we produce plus millions of
skin cells shed every day. This leads nicely into why it is a good thing to actually wash. To help us
keep our teeth clean we make our own toothpaste and test it against shop bought and finally
Helen gives a group of volunteers a glitter cold to see why it is important to wash our hands.
Lots of valuable messages delivered in an interactive humorous way. The workshops complement the show—Super Senses for KS1 with feely bags, grot bags and mystery liquids. Toothpaste testing OR bath bombs for KS2.
This is a very popular show with primary schools so

A Date for Your Diary
National Women in Engineering Day (NWED) is an international awareness campaign to raise the
profile of women in engineering and focus on the career opportunities available to girls
NWED takes place annually on 23rd June and last year was a huge success winning awards with over
400 organisations, schools, colleges, universities, industry bodies and individual engineers taking part
all over the world to celebrate the achievements of women engineers and encourage more girls and
women to consider engineering as a career.

BIG BANG NorthWest Update
MerseySTEM are releasing information about BIG BANG NorthWest at quite a pace .
The new venue Exhibition Centre Liverpool, on the waterfront looks to be a much better space as
we will all be under one roof—easier to get around and keep tabs on your pupils.
Medical Mavericks have confirmed they will be there— “We can’t wait to set up at the new
Exhibition Centre Liverpool for The Big Bang North West! The Accelerator is returning so you had
better bring your trainers to see if you can beat a virtual Usain Bolt. You can also pop into our
medical dome and have a look inside your body! You can have take a picture of the retina inside
your eye with an iPhone Retina Scan, see inside your body with an
Ultrasound machine as well record and print
an ECG!
We will be on the main stage with our new show. See you there!!
