All School News How to prevent Waynflete emails from going into spam folders Email service providers have recently become more aggressive with their spam filters. As a result, some of Waynflete's messages to you—including the Waynflete Weekly—could end up in your spam folder. Please check your spam folder periodically. If you find a Waynflete message that has been incorrectly labeled as spam, click on the "Not Spam" button (you can usually find this in the toolbar of your email client). In addition, you should add the following email addresses to your contacts/address book to prevent them from being labeled as spam: [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected]. Heather Brown Alumni Collection Opens! Visit the Waynflete Gallery to see The Heather Brown Alumni Collection 2015. The exhibit is a collection of works by Waynflete alumni who have received the Heather Brown '83 Art Award. The exhibit runs through November 18. "Laugh Therapy" with Tim Sample on October 8 Tim Sample will be on campus on Thursday, October 8 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. in Franklin Theater for an event to benefit Family Hope. Following the show, Tim will be interviewed by Pat Callaghan of WCSH6 about his personal experiences with the mental health system in Maine. Q&A will follow. Click here to purchase tickets. Monday Books Dessert & Discussion is Celebrating 10 Years! Come enjoy discussions led by faculty and staff on books they have chosen. It’s a great place to scan the many varied learning experiences occurring daily in the Lower School. Lower School Picture Day on October 6 Lower School Picture Day is scheduled for Tuesday, October 6. Ordering information was sent home this week with students. Please contact Diane Godsoe with any questions. Lower School Open Houses - October 7 and 15 Lower School Open Houses are scheduled for early October. Please plan on attending each of your children’s events as these are great opportunities to learn about the program and your child's daily experience at Waynflete. Lower School Open Houses continued Lower School Global Focus – Peru The focus of our Global Study this year is Peru. This study will integrate all things “Peruvian” across the Lower School community for a portion of the winter. Teachers spend much of the preceding summer and fall researching the chosen culture. We invite parents with any connections to Peru (contacts, resources, personal experiences, etc.) to connect with your child’s advisor, or with Ben Thrash or Diane Godsoe. Thanks! News From the Middle School All-Day Field Trip for 7th Grade: Monday, October 5 The seventh grade will visit the Peabody Museum in Cambridge, MA on Monday, October 5 as part of their Cultural Geography class with Lindsay Clarke. Students will depart Waynflete at 8:15 a.m. and parents should plan on picking up their child at school at 5:30 p.m. Peabody Museum Trip Letter & Permission Form Picture Day on October 6 Picture Day is Tuesday, October 6. All Middle School students will have their picture taken during lunch and activities periods. Advisors have sent the order form home with students. Parents may also place their photo order online at Coffee Pond Photography. Please print and send the confirmation email with your child on Picture Day. No School on October 9 and October 12 Fall Weekend is October 9-12. Faculty and staff will have a professional development day on October 9 and school will be closed on October 12. Middle School Dance on October 23 The first dance of the school year will be held on Friday, October 23 from 7:30– 9:30 p.m. in Emery Student Center. Student Government will be providing the DJ and organizing the music for all dances this year. Middle School Ski Program 2015-2016 For more than 20 years, Waynflete’s Middle School Ski Program has given our students the opportunity to get outside and build friendships on winter Wednesdays. Avid skier and veteran Middle School teacher Betsy Langer encourages students to build self-reliance through the exciting challenges presented by a day on the slopes. Driver’s Education - Fall 2015 A three-week Driver’s Ed course will be offered at Waynflete by Right Choice Driving School from Monday, October 26 through Friday, November 13. More information about Driver's Ed News from Enrichment Afterschool: Full Fun Days Offered on October 9 and October 30 Join the Afterschool Program during Professional Development Day (Friday, October 9) and Parent Conferences (Friday, October 30). October 9: Octoberfest (Grades K-5) Join in classic fall activities like corn hole, cake walks, and Frisbee tosses. We will build solar ovens to bake apples, create leaf presses and apple stamps, and construct wilderness shelters. October 30: Afterschool Spooktacular (Grades K-5) and Ultimate Frisbee Clinic (Grades 2-5) Celebrate the spooky season with a costume parade, puppet making, grave rubbings, and Halloween crafts and cooking. Grades 2-5 also may participate in a morning (9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.). The Ultimate Frisbee Clinic will be run by former captains of the Bowdoin and Oberlin teams. More information on Full Fun Days News From the Parents Association Please join us for Bluegrass & Blue Jeans on Saturday, October 17 Waynflete Parents Association is excited to host this casual and fun evening on campus including music by Jerks of Grass, food trucks (Mami, Fishin’ Ships, CN Shawarma and Love Kupcakes), local beer compliments of Maine Beer Company and Allagash Brewing Company, and time to connect with Waynflete parents, faculty, staff, alumni, and grandparents. We look forward to seeing you there! From the Archives by Chuck Rand Eighth graders posed inside their "Globe Theatre" in October 1982. During the fall, the 8th graders were assigned the theme of Elizabethan Britain. According to page 11 of the February1983 issue of The Waynflete News, "The eighth grade designed and built its own Globe Theatre, and decorated it with faithful copies of portraits of major Elizabethan figures."
