I devoured every little tidbit of information that we could
get our hands on for our visit to the DiMera Mansion set
on Days Of Our Lives. We all know how much effort goes
into designing a set, but it still blows my mind when I read
about all the little things that they think about. The next
time one of the actors throws a chess piece around, I’ll
remember that the set designers bought the chess set from
a local toy store. And those oil paintings are digital prints
that have been enhanced. Now imagine sitting at Stefano’s
desk smoking a cigar – no wonder he thinks he’s invincible.

There is indeed a fifth season of
this epic sci-fi drama that stars
John Noble (Walter), Joshua
Jackson (Peter) and Anna Torv
(Olivia). However, after we
approached M-Net, they said
that we won’t see it before
September. An exact date hasn’t
been confirmed for the fifth
season, which also happens to
be the final season of the series.

SABC3 publicity co-ordinator

that the returning duo are
additions to the Top Billing

Cherel (Michelle Botes) and Len
(Chris Beasly) are still very much
part of the Isidingo family. While
the Isidingo team didn’t have
much to say about the confusing

that Cherel and Len will be back
soon. Michelle’s taking a welldeserved break, while Chris is
focusing on his directing role at
the soap. Keep your eyes open –
this pair will return with a bang!

from Yfm when Club 808 gets

Town and I heard rumours that Gordon Ramsay will be a
guest judge on MasterChef SA’s new season. Is this true,

Hi Janette. Gordon Ramsay announced to audiences around the
country that he’ll be a guest chef on MasterChef SA season 2. But
this isn’t true. Naughty Gordon! Ingrid Engelbrecht, senior publicity
executive for M-Net, dismisses this rumour. However, she went on
to say that there will be other surprises in store. “We do have other
international special appearances lined up, but these will remain
top secret until they’re revealed on the show.” Sizzling stuff!

season of Gossip Girl come to
SABC3? – JULIA, HERMANUS
The gossip’s
all but gone.
Except for repeats, Gossip Girl
won’t be seen on SABC3 again
this year. While the SABC3 team
seem very keen to bring back the
show for a fourth round, they
aren’t able to work it into their
schedules for 2013. We’ll cross
our fingers and hold thumbs
that this will change soon.

Hello tvplus. I’d like to know why CSI: NY and CSI are
scheduled so late in the evenings – I’m asleep by that
time – ANNELIEN SWANEPOEL, VANDERBIJLPARK
There’s a really rational explanation for this, Annelien. It’s called
a watershed. Certain programmes are only allowed to be aired
after the watershed. In South Africa, all programmes with an age
restriction of 16 and higher may not be aired before 21:00, so the
broadcasters have to fit these shows in at a much later time. With
CSI being rated 16 most of the time, the channels have no choice
but to broadcast the episodes this late.

Showtime recently announced that
the third season of The Borgias will be
its last. While the series was planned
to run for four seasons, producers
have decided to rather end it
while the ratings are still looking
relatively good. Showtime head
honcho David Nevins has also said
that “whatever bonded them as a
family dies in the (final) episode,”
adding that “the centre of the
drama for me was always the
family”. The season was meant to
have a two-hour finale but that’s

They’ve all helped to bring
some of the most popular
reality series to TV – the
Kardashian franchises, Idols, X Factor and
Survivor wouldn’t exist without them. But
it takes more than brains to make good TV.
You’ll need lots and lots of money. From
expensive actor and presenter salaries, to
writers, sets costumes and marketing…it
costs a pretty penny to produce a TV show.

HOW TO GET STARTED
After an idea’s greenlit by a network like
NBC or HBO, or locally SABC, e.tv or M-Net,
it’s sent to a production studio where the
expensive magic happens. US shows tend
to be three times more expensive than
other countries’ to produce. The lowest
cost is about $500 000 (around R5 million)
per episode, but an average episode costs
between $1.5 and 2 million (R15-20 million)
– and they’re increasing. In its day, hospital
drama ER cost a whopping $13 million per
episode. That’s R130 million that NBC paid
Warner Brothers for production. And what
about a current estimate? Arguably the
world’s most popular and talked-about
series is Game Of Thrones. As well as being
the most pirated series at the moment, it’s
also possibly the most expensive: season 1’s
budget was $60 million (R600 million) and
it increased by 15 percent for season 2!

Talent also costs a lot. The less well-known
the star, the lower their salary. Background
actors in Hollywood receive an average of
the equivalent of R1 200 a day, while actors

get paid around R7 000 a day, and a stunt
co-ordinator commands roughly R25 000
per week. Ashton Kutcher’s currently the
highest-paid TV actor, earning $700 000
(R7 million) per episode of Two And A Half
Men, while Sofia Vergara is the highestearning TV actress for 2013. Along with
some of her Modern Family co-stars, she
makes about $170 000 (R1.7 million) per
episode. And there are 24 episodes per
season! The Kardashian clan signed
a $30 million (that’s R300 million!)
contract for the 2012 season of
Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

networks, like HBO, pay with money made
from their shares in subscriptions to cable
TV. But it isn’t always possible to keep up.
CSI: Miami, despite being hugely successful,
had to be cancelled in 2012 due to sky-high
production costs. Even a long-running
animated show like The Simpsons was in
danger of being cancelled in 2011 when its
23rd season was deemed too pricey and
voice actors took a 45-percent paycut.
