DSC Building New Des Moines Fire Department Training Facility
S
erving nearly 200,000 people in
the Des Moines area, the Des
Moines Fire Department knows
how important training is as a
part of being a well-prepared fire department. Soon, they will be able to train new
recruits and current members to local and
national standards as the fire department is
getting a new 53,773 square foot
training and logistics facility. Dean Snyder
Construction started construction last fall
and the project completion is set for this
summer.
Included in their new facility will be
classrooms, apparatus training bays,
multipurpose areas, maintenance space, a
supply and distribution warehouse, and
administrative offices. The building is
designed for the future expansion of both
the apparatus and maintenance bays.
The first fire station was built in 1933,
and the fire department and its equipment
have outgrown the current location. For
the past several years, the department
has had to find empty parking lots and ask
for space in nearby buildings in the Des
Moines area in order to properly train their
members.
The new facility is being constructed
from a pre-engineered metal frame with
the exterior material surface being a
combination of burnished block, brick
veneer, metal panels, glass and aluminum
storefront, and curtain wall systems.
Inside energy efficient heating and cooling
system will be installed, including a
geothermal system.
The building plans will be submitted to
the US Green Building Council upon
competition for LEED evaluation and
certification.

C
reating the first certified memory
care unit within a residential living
space in the state of Iowa, Dean
Snyder Construction crews
recently finished a two-year project at
Scottish Rite Park in Des Moines, Iowa. In
order for this complete renovation of the unit
to happen, DSC worked with the Iowa
Department of Inspections and Appeals. This
design-build project allows for citizens
suffering from memory loss to still live independently while help is not too far away.
Included in the remodel are nine residential rooms, a
lounge area, an activity room, a sensory room, and a family
visiting area. Outside of each residential room is a memory box,
filled with something from the resident’s past that is special to
them and designed to help residents locate their rooms. Inside the
sensory room, or snoezelen room, residents are welcomed to
relax and take time to themselves with soothing music and special
lighting.
Scottish Rite Park is a modern retirement residence that
offers the independence of ownership without the work and
responsibilities of maintaining a house. The nonprofit corporation
owns and operates a modern twelve-story, 181-unit building. Their
healthcare center has been recognized as a 5-star facility by the

DSC Acquires
Architectural Firm
Dean Snyder Construction is pleased to announce the acquisition of
Waggoner & Wineinger Architects of Mason City, Iowa. Increasing both companies
ability to better serve their markets, Waggoner & Wineinger Architects (WWA) has over
89 years of design experience and is a leading firm in providing design services to a
wide variety of markets throughout the North Iowa area.
WWA is expected to expand Dean Snyder Construction’s design-build
capabilities. DSC now has two full-time licensed architects on staff as well as six
designers.
“The acquisition of WWA naturally complements our design-build services. We
will take our expertise in building and integrate their expertise in design to provide better
enhanced services for our clients,” says Dale Snyder, CEO of DSC. “We look forward
to WWA joining our team.”
WWA will continue business as usual, providing professional design and
architectural services to the public sector in the areas of education, government, city,
civil, childcare, and religious facilities. With the resources of a construction company
now, WWA will be able to enhance the estimating and scheduling aspects of their
services.
Combined, Dean Snyder Construction and WWA have 142 years of experience
in construction and design.
