Detroit 2013 MEMBERSHIP www.sacc-detroit.org HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2012 June 4, 2012 Annual Golf Outing This years Golf event was held at Scalawags Golf Club, Chesterfield. Kicki and Roger Lidgren sponsored SACC with the Club. Almost 70 people signed up for the Golf Tournament and Dinner. SACC-Detroit, Inc. Wishes to thank all our members for their support, During the day we had a silent auction going in one of the rooms at the Club. All the Items were donated by members and Companies. Among all a signed framed hockey jersey by Niclas Lidstrom, #5, donated by Atlas Copco Tools & Assembly Systems, a Foursome donated by Scalawags Golf Club, a fine bottle of wine and Wine Glasses donated by Global Science and Technology, a Gift Basket donated by IKEA, a two speed Pocket Driver donated by Robert Bosch LLC, Beautiful Swedish Brass candle holders donated by US Defense Services, A weekend in a condo in Bay Harbor donated by John Holmquist and two U of M tickets vs Massachusetts. We thank Elder Automotive Group of Troy for sponsoring a hole in one with a SAAB 9:3 The weather this day was perfect, not to hot not to cold. Of and on the sky cleared up and the sun was shining. We had a good turnout and the Pro shop did an excellent job. The service, food and location at the club worked out just as well. especially our Gold Corporate MemberS: ABB INC. CONSULATE GENERAL OF SWEDEN WENNBERG INTERNATIONAL 1 First place Winning Team, The Autoliv group, received beautiful awards. Prizes to the second Place winner, Team Atlas Copco 2, was also given out. Longest drive women went to Sue Miller. Longest drive men went to Chris Ormrod. Closest to the Pin – Ladies, went to Lynn Milroy David This year we decided to do a Barbeque instead of a Sit down dinner. Everything worked out really well. We celebrated at the beautiful Orchard Lake Country Club, Orchard Lake. The event was sponsored by Mr. Johan Wesslen. 57 members and friends showed up to a Club decorated with all the traditional Moons and Lanterns. All the tables were decorated in red and white, with songbooks, “snaps” glasses and the special little forks for shell fish foods. As a Centerpiece a huge silver plate filled with Crayfish. The Crayfish came from Oregon this year as well as last year. Johan Wesslen ordered them and picked them up at the Airport. 2 BIG THANK YOU Johan! As always the chef did a Great Job with all the special Swedish food like, “Gravlax”, Herring, Janssons Temptation, Meatballs and very tasty Desserts. During the evening we were singing Swedish Snaps songs. Our toastmaster for the evening became ill, but as Swedes we managed by taking turns at the tables. Great success! This warm and wonderful evening came to an end with the drawing of the raffle. All the tickets were sold by our special Raffle Queen, Ingrid Hedfors. As always she did a great job selling tickets.The price was a Big Basket, a Candle holder by Orrefors and some authentic wooden utensils for the Swedish Smorgasbord. SACC Detroit Annual Meeting on December 12, 2012 SACC Detroit held its Annual Meeting on December 12th at the Birmingham Country Club in suburban Detroit. Nominating chair Urban Lundberg introduced the board of directors and the new Chairman Anders Höberg, General Manager Atlas Copco North America Tools and Assembly. Outgoing Chairman, Ken Enborg, received great accolades for his expert leadership during the last three years. The guests enjoyed an authentic and expertly prepared Swedish Smörgåsbord while listening to the keynote speaker Mike Lorenc, Head of Google’s Account and Management . Mr. Lorenc, an online advertising veteran, first came to the US from Poland as an exchange student in Clio Michigan. He began his career in advertising and marketing working for a local cable company in Flint Michigan, and from there he moved to AOL Time Warner before joining Google. Mr. Lorenc gave a fascinating presentation about Google’s original ambition to present the world’s vast catalogue of information in an organized fashion. In 12 years since Google has become a leader within social media and sits on cash reserve of approximately $50B. The company is constantly innovating whether from minimizing the environmental impact of its 30 data centers around the world to charging forward with concepts such as Google Fiber, Google Street View, Google Glasses, and Google Self Driving Car. Google Fiber is a hard fiber providing an internet connection 100 times faster than what is commonly used today. Google Street View has moved to a whole new level using transportation alternatives that can cover everything from bike trails, ski runs to indoor building layouts. Google glasses allow you to share your point of view in real time as you see it. The Google Self Driving Car drives to a programmed destination without driver assist. The Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce, Inc. Business Services The Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1906 to provide a forum for American and Swedish business executives to address common interests and needs. SACC is a membership organization with its main mission to develop and promote bilateral trade, commerce and investments between Sweden and the United States. SACC-Detroit is one of 19 regional chambers with a total of 2,300 members in major cities across the U.S., all under the umbrella of the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce of the United States (SACC-USA), together creating a nationwide Swedish-American business network. This network provides access to several organizations and government bodies involved in bilateral trade activities, such as the Swedish Consuls, the Swedish Trade Council (STC), The Swedish Embassy in Washington, the Invest Sweden Agency (ISA) and the American Embassy in Stockholm. SACC-Detroit is a non-profit organization funded entirely by membership subscription and funds generated by activities arranged by the chapter. Membership information is maintained on a master roster by the organization and is distributed to the members on an annual basis. Information of national and regional interest is distributed to the members through our meetings and seminars. In addition, networking is further enhanced through lunch meetings, pub nights and other social events. Our location in Detroit, Michigan, the automotive capital of the world, provides us with a very diverse membership base from all facets of business. In addition to strong representation from the manufacturing sector, also well represented in the Chamber are banks, legal and professional firms, as well as individuals with Swedish-American interests. This diversity is our most valuable asset and results not only in an extensive on-going network but also provides broad-based opportunities for future growth. Sweden Sweden, with a population of 9 million, has several well known vehicle manufacturers. Few countries are so export-intensive and export-dependent as Sweden, and few countries have developed such a high degree of entrepreneurial talent in relation to the size. Major export companies in Sweden consists of Volvo Cars, Volvo Trucks AB and Scania trucks and buses, SAAB aircraft, ASEA Brown Boveri (ABB) in electrical engineering, Ericsson in telecommunications, Electrolux in white goods, SKF in bearings, SSAB-Swedish Steel and Trelleborg Rubber. In the forest industry, the leaders are Stora, SCA and MoDo and in construction, Skanska. Swedish companies that operate on a global basis include Autoliv in safety restraint systems, Sandvik in specialized steel products, Atlas Copco in rock drills, power tools and loading machines, Absolut vodka, and of course, many others. Sweden has also become a leader in the information technology business in Europe. In the health-care products sector, Swedish companies include international leaders like AstraZeneca, Pharmacia Upjohn, and Gambro. Milk and other beverages stored in packaging from Tetra Laval are enjoyed in Sweden and around the world. The province of Småland is known for its spirit of initiative and industriousness, which has generated a number of internationally successful companies. Examples are IKEA, Orrefors and Kosta Boda. Detroit and Michigan SACC-Detroit and its members are dynamic business participants in Detroit and Michigan, which have traditionally been the core of America’s industrial strength and vitality. Today, half of North America’s population and income is located within 500 miles of the Detroit region, and Detroit is the NAFTA center in North America. The Detroit region offers many possibilities for companies that are looking to locate in the right place. It has been a top trade city in North America for a number of years. The transportation infrastructure is strong. The port of Detroit offers shipping, and airlines offer direct flights to major destinations in Europe, North America and Asia. The Detroit region has 105 Universities and Colleges, led by the University of Michigan, ranked in the top 10 in the US. You also have access to over 100 golf courses in the area of Detroit.
