November 2013 Cheshvan— Kislev 5774 Issue No. 130 Shalom Springfield The Newsletter of the Jewish Federation of Springfield, Illinois Available online at www.shalomspringfield.org The Adult Education Committee and the Jim and Edith Myers Education Fund of the Jewish Federation of Springfield, Illinois present RABBI LANCE SUSSMAN Transcending an “Artless Tradition” Seeing is Believing: A History of Jewish Art Judaism has been historically seen as an "artless tradition" due to the prohibition of "graven images" by the Torah, and anti-Semitic barriers in artists' guilds. Join us for a visual presentation of the art of prominent Jewish artists of the time, such as Moritz Daniel Oppenheim, Isidor Kauffman, and Marc Chagall. At the age of 67, after living alone for 10 years following her husband's death, she was awarded custody of her five teenage grandchildren. After a tumultuous period of investigation, the state had determined their mother was unfit and all five moved into her one–bedroom, one–bath apartment. "I knew that I had their support and that I could really do this" Judith initially hoped she'd be able to support her grandchildren, both financially and emotionally, which she now terms "naive." She soon came to realize she would need assistance. "I needed a support group that was big enough to help me and the children, but I couldn't go to a temple because I wasn't a member anywhere," she says, "I kept reading about Jewish Federation and I heard so many good things, so I called them." Federation provided the family with food when Judith wasn't able to afford it, and offered the children school supplies and clothing. "I knew that I had their support and that I could really do this," said Judith. "I could raise these five children and make productive people out of them."
