Between the Threads
FROM
ELI ZABETH
Bullion Knots
Bullion knots have been
striking fear into stitchers'
hearts for a long time. They
can be a little persnickety if
you don’t get the tension right,
but when worked correctly,
they add wonderful texture
to your needlepoint. They are
often used for landscaping,
fur, hair and flowers and can
be worked right on the canvas
or on top of small stitches
like tent, skip tent or T-stitch.
Bullion knots are also referred
to as caterpillar stitch, worm
stitch, coil stitch, Puerto Rico
rose, and roll stitch.
The Puerto
Rico rose is
comprised
of a number
of bullion
knots stitched
in a coil to
resemble a flower.
In the November/December
issue we reviewed Colonial
Needle’s new bullion needles
that come in tapestry and
sharp points. Each package
contains a 3 ½”, 5” and 7”
needle. The longer the needle,
the longer you can make your
stitch. Follow the step-by-step
directions below and you will
be making bullion stitches like
a pro in no time.
Step 1: Bring the needle
up through the canvas.
Step 2: Measure how long
you would like your stitch
to be and go down into
the canvas at that point.
Step 3: Bring the needle
back up at step 1.
February 2015
Step 5: Pull the needle,
sliding the wraps from the
needle to the end of the
thread. Lightly pinching the
needle and the thread while
sliding the wraps helps.
Step 6: Take the needle
to the back of the canvas
where you went down in
step 2.
Step 4: Using the stitch between
step 1 and 2, wrap the needle over
and over until the wraps cover the
same area as the length of the
stitch you want. Do not wrap too
tightly or you will have problems
pulling the needle through the
wraps. But don’t wrap too loosely
or you will have a messy stitch.
Take your time and stroke the wraps
until they lie smoothly.
Practice makes perfect
on bullions but the
new longer needles
by Colonial have
greatly improved my
bullion knots.
Would you like to try
a set? If so, email us at
[email protected]
with your name and subscriber
number. Thanks to Colonial
Needle we
have a set
to give away
in a drawing.
The contest
ends on
April 18th
and we will
announce
the winner
in our April
newsletter.
We asked for a picture of
your stitching nook and 150 words or
less telling us why you needed a

After 25 years my stitching corner has
been disrupted by the loss of the couch
I used to sit on. A new chair is coming
soon but as you can see it is a pretty dark
corner. New lighting and a new chair—
what a way to start a new stitching year.
