Spring or no Spring?
Spring is almost here. Well, it was here last
week but we are back to winter this week.
Should I plant my vegetable garden or wait
until next month? Is it too early for me to
bring out my spring clothes and pack away
the winter ones? It seemed like a good idea
last week but I’m not so sure this week.
The change of seasons is always a confusing
time for me. Since that year it seemed like
we were going to be rewarded with an
early spring and I planted my tomatoes
in April instead of waiting until May like
I usually do. I was delirious with Spring
fever and paid no attention to the
voices in my head telling me to wait
and I ended up having to replant my
tomatoes in May due to a heavy frost
at the end of April.
I experience the same seasonal
confusion about my needlepoint.
Do I feel like stitching Christmas
themed pieces because it’s cold
and raw outside and I have a
fire in the woodstove, or are my
fingers itching to stitch a floral
or beach scene?
Last month I flew to San Diego to
visit my good friends Vicky De Angelis
and Jill Rigoli to take a class from
Diane Hermann. Diane was teaching
her wildly popular Walking on the
Water’s Edge to the San Diego
chapter of ANG. It was so warm and
sunny in San Diego. We were stitching
a wave on a sandy beach and I loved
every moment of my visit. It was like
going on a tropical vacation without
the tropical vacation price.
When I came home to Oregon it was
cold and raining. The feeling I had
while stitching and soaking up the
sun in San Diego seemed long in
the distant past. I reluctantly put the
beach scene away to work on a project
for the upcoming May/June issue. But
today the sun is peeking out from
behind the clouds, the piece for the
magazine is complete and I am excited
to return to stitching the wave and
dreaming about walking on a warm
sandy beach with the sun on my face.

My Wicked Ways

I have been trying
to change my
ways and make an
effort to actually
finish a few of
my needlepoint
projects. There is
nothing better than
starting a new
project. I’m sure it
is the thrill of the
hunt that gets my
adrenalin pumping
causing the glassy
look in my eye and
the flush on my
face. These cravings
for new projects
come over me all the time and sometimes when
I’m not even looking for retail therapy.
Just the other day, Ruth Schmuff posted a canvas
on her Facebook page with a note saying, “the
first person that asks her nicely can have it at a
discount.” Before my brain even kicked in I was
posting back “Pick me, pick me!”
As I have said before, I don’t feel bad about
owning an abundance of needlepoint projects.
I consider my stash an investment
in my future. What if all the
canvas factories burn down, or
I become poor and can’t afford
to buy needlepoint supplies in
the future? What I feel badly
about is that I don’t have
enough time to stitch as much as
I would like.
I get up at 6 a.m. on weekdays so
I can watch the news, drink coffee
and stitch for one hour before getting ready
for work. Many days this is my only stitching
time. I have been trying to limit my morning
stitching rotation to working on no more
than three projects at a time so I can actually
see progress and even finish something from
time to time. My goal is to finish one project
a month. It doesn’t have to be a big project
but it does have to be a finish. So far I am on
track with Little Black Dress by Pippin for my
finish in January. I stitched this piece for the
Stitching Games on <http://stitcherie.ning.
com> and wrote my own stitch guide.
In February I went wild and had two finishes.
The first was Squatty Stitching Santa by
Strictly Christmas. I had a little help from
a stitch guide by Ruth but I went rogue on
several of the areas. I also finished the Peeps
that appeared in the March/
April issue.
In March I worked with my ad
designer, Carol Finsand to come
up with a Memorial Day Pin to
feature in the magazine. We are
quiet proud of it and hope you
will enjoy stitching it as much
as Carol enjoyed designing it
and I enjoyed stitching it.
Here it is mid April and
although I am working on
several pieces, it is going to
be a challenge to keep up my
finishing streak but you never
know. I may be bragging about
something in the next issue.
Don’t make me be the only
one who is tooting their own horn. Share
your accomplishments with us too. We
would love to see what you have been
working on.

Mum’s the Word is an elegant minaudière that is a must for every woman's wardrobe.
This small (4 ½" x 5") evening bag is large enough to hold your smartphone, a credit
card, and a bit of lip gloss. The chrysanthemum design is padded silk with either gold or
silver that is striking on black Congress cloth, while the back is stitched in a coordinating
metallic pattern. Color choices will be offered, including red, orange, yellow, green,
blue, and lavender. Instruction will also be provided for creating a beaded handle that
can be attached to the bag.
Kit Contains:
Two pieces Congress cloth, all threads, purse form, attachments, photo, and
complete instructions
Student to bring:
2 sets of 9" x 9" stretcher bars, & the usual stitching tools, including light and
magnification if needed
Lunch and Dinner: The price includes lunch on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday there will be a BBQ on
the patio. The BBQ is free to anyone participating in the class. Before heading home on
Sunday, join us for an early no host dinner at our local restaurant Our Daily Bread.
Cancellation Policy: Cancellation with full refund up to April 4th when the final class number goes to the
teacher. After April 30th there will not be any refunds. You may find someone to
take your place.

“Uh-Oh” Santa is stuck! This jolly stand-up is stitched on #18 white canvas with 18
different fun threads, including three metallic braids, Fuzzy Stuff, Watercolours,
Wildflowers, silks, overdyed pearls and flosses, linen, and Petite Sparkle Rays. To add
even more sparkle, we will embellish him with sequins and three kinds of beads. Stitches
include traditional and new bargello, three-step Scotch variation, two-color Rhodes,
padded petal, brick, French knots, criss-cross Hungarian, diagonal mosaic, couching,
random straight, padded satin, and trapunto to fatten his tummy — "Uh-Oh!"
Kit Contains:
18-count canvas with a line drawing, all threads and embellishments, complete directions,
color copies, batting and muslin
