About Teams
Genius in Action
FIRST Robotics
Competition
FIRST LEGO League
Junior FIRST LEGO League
The core of the high school-level FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is the design
and building of a robotic competitor. Each year in early January, FIRST unveils the
competition or “game” at an annual kick-off event that is beamed by NASA satellite to
venues all over the world. This is the first glimpse students get of the game they will
have to design their robot to play.
Working in teams, students have just six weeks to create their robot. They get the opportunity to work
with programmable radio controls, pneumatics, motors, electrical circuits, mechanics, machining, web
design, computer animation, computer assisted design, and other technologies – just like professional
engineers and technologists do.
FIRST Tech Challenge
Calendar
Team Lists
Following the six-week design and build phase,
teams compete at regional tournaments held in
major metropolitan centers across the US as well
as in Canada and Israel. In 2009 season there will
be 41 regional competitions involving 1,700 high
school communities and 42,500 students.
Team Support Activities
Team Resources
New York City / New Jersey FIRST is offering two
FIRST Robotics Competitions during the 2009
season: February 26-28 at Sovereign Bank Arena
in Trenton, NJ and March 6-8 at the Jacob JAvits
Convention Center in Manhattan.
“The skills kids learn when
they participate in FIRST give
them career opportunities. Do
you want to be an electrical
engineer, physicist? Do you
want to do genomics or
nanotechnology? What
exciting career do you want
to go into? We’re helping you
make those options possible.”
- Dean Kamen, Founder,
FIRST
The 2009 FRC season culminates in the FIRST Championship, to be held April 16-18 at the Georgia
Dome in Atlanta, GA. Over 27,000 students, family, and friends will gather from around the world to
compete and celebrate.

FIRST LEGO League
About Teams
FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is an exciting and fun global robotics program
that ignites an enthusiasm for discovery, science, and technology in kids
ages 9 to 14.
FIRST Robotics
Competition
FIRST LEGO League
Junior FIRST LEGO League
FIRST Tech Challenge
Each year FLL teams embark on an adventurous Challenge based on
current, real-world issues. Guided by a team coach and assisted by
mentors, the kids research and solve a real-world problem based on the
Challenge theme, present their research and solutions, and build an autonomous robot using engineering
concepts.
Using the yearly Challenges, FLL entices kids to think like scientists and engineers, provides a fun,
creative, hands-on learning experience, teaches kids to experiment and overcome obstacles, builds selfesteem and confidence, and inspires kids to participate in science and technology.
Calendar
Team Lists
No matter what the child's subject interest, FLL offers an opportunity for engagement. Whether it is by
creativity, technology, or research, FLL dares kids to test, explore, expand, or completely change
thoughts and approaches for different sciences each year.
Team Support Activities
Team Resources
So far, FLL has reached more than 100,000 kids in 45 countries around the globe. See the Calendar for
FLL competitions in the New York City / New Jersey region.

FIRST Tech Challenge
About Teams
The FIRST Tech™ Challenge (FTC) is a mid-level robotics competition for highschool students. It offers the traditional challenge of a FIRST competition but is
more accessible and affordable.
FIRST Robotics
Competition
FIRST LEGO League
Junior FIRST LEGO League
FIRST Tech Challenge
The FIRST Tech Challenge grew out of the existing FIRST Robotics Competition
and the FIRST Robovation platform. FIRST, RadioShack, and Innovation First
collaborated to develop an improved version of the FIRST Robovation kit. The new
kit is significantly upgraded and is called the Tech Robotics Design System.
The ultimate goal of FTC is to reach more young people with a lower-cost, more accessible opportunity
to discover the excitement and rewards of science, technology, and engineering.

What is FRC?
FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is a unique varsity sport of the mind designed to help
high-school-aged young people discover how interesting and rewarding the life of engineers
and researchers can be.
The FIRST Robotics Competition challenges teams of young people and their mentors to
solve a common problem in a six-week timeframe using a standard "kit of parts" and a
common set of rules. Teams build robots from the parts and enter them in competitions
designed by Dean Kamen, Dr. Woodie Flowers, and a committee of engineers and other
professionals.
FIRST redefines winning for these students because they are rewarded for excellence in
design, demonstrated team spirit, gracious professionalism and maturity, and the ability to
overcome obstacles. Scoring the most points is a secondary goal. Winning means building
partnerships that last.
What is unique about the FRC program?
It is a sport where the participants play with the pros and learn from them
Designing and building a robot is a fascinating real-world professional experience
Competing on stage brings participants as much excitement and adrenaline rush as
conventional varsity tournaments
The game rules are a surprise every year

What is FLL?
FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is an exciting and fun global robotics program that ignites an
enthusiasm for discovery, science, and technology in kids ages 9 to 14 (16 outside of the
U.S. and Canada).
Each year FLL teams embark on an adventurous Challenge based on current, real-world
issues. Guided by a team coach and assisted by mentors, the kids:
Research and solve a real-world problem based on the Challenge theme
Present their research and solutions
Build an autonomous robot using engineering concepts
Using the yearly Challenges, FLL:
Entices kids to think like scientists and engineers
Provides a fun, creative, hands-on learning experience
Teaches kids to experiment and overcome obstacles
Builds self-esteem and confidence
Inspires kids to participate in science and technology
No matter what the child’s subject interest, FLL offers an opportunity for engagement.
Whether it is by creativity, technology, or research, FLL dares kids to test, explore, expand,
or completely change thoughts and approaches for different sciences each year.
Climate Connections Challenge revealed! Plus, get a preview of the new FLL and Junior
FIRST LEGO League (Jr.FLL) social site (www.firstlegoleague.org) as you check out the
Challenge FLL teams will storm this year.
FLL is the result of a partnership between FIRST and The LEGO Group. In 1998, FIRST
Founder Dean Kamen and The LEGO Group’s Kjeld Kirk Kristiensen joined forces to create
FIRST LEGO League (FLL), a powerful program that engages younger children in playful and
meaningful learning while helping them to discover the fun in science and technology. So far,
FLL has reached more than 135,000 kids in 45 countries around the globe.

FIRST Robotics
Competition
Created in partnership with the LEGO Group, Junior FIRST

Team Support Activities
Children spend about a month exploring, investigating, designing
and building a model made with LEGO bricks.
Teams celebrate and share their experience with other teams,
family and friends at local events or at an official JFLL Expo.
The celebration includes time to enhance the teams’ current models and show their poster, meet with
friendly "Reviewers" to share their experiences, and receive recognition for their efforts.
JFLL introduces children to the concepts of teamwork and basic
design skills, creating an initial interest and hands-on approach
to science and technology through the familiarity and fun of
LEGO building.
Team Resources
The goal: provide an experience that will begin to transform
youngsters and open their eyes to the possibilities of improving
the world around them through acknowledgement, thought,
planning and technology.

About the World Festival...
FIRST is honored to host the annual FLL World Festival in conjunction with the FIRST Championship in Atlanta each
April. The FIRST LEGO League World Festival is open to spectators free of charge, as are all FIRST events.
The World Festival is a 2½-day event celebrating team, robotic, and project accomplishments. During the days, team
members take part in judging sessions and robot competition rounds, culminating at a final FLL award ceremony.
Evenings are filled with informal activities including an FLL Celebration at Centennial Olympic Park. On Saturday evening,
an exciting FIRST Finale spectacular is also offered to all FIRST Championship participating teams to complete the
experience.
In conjunction with the celebration, the FIRST Robotics Conference is hosted at the Georgia World Congress Center.

World Festival Selection Process and Invitations
The Climate Connections World Festival will host up to 84 teams from around the globe. Invitations for the 84 slots are
distributed according to a refined selection process:
62 veteran Championship Tournaments, selected by lottery
All first year Championship Tournaments (6 for Climate Connections)
Teams representing FLL Core Values; as selected from Operational Partner nominees
Read the full selection process for more detail.
Based upon these criteria, the Championship tournaments that received an invitation to send their Champion's Award
winning team to the Climate Connections World Festival can be viewed here. Championships not listed will receive an
automatic invitation in the next year that space is available.
When viewing the list remember:
The size of an FLL region is based on the number of teams and the geography of an area. Some regions overlap
national, provincial or state boundaries.
FLL Teams can only win awards at the first Championship Tournament they attend.
The list of invited FLL Core Value Teams will be announced later this winter.
