Page 6A FANNIN SENTINEL7KXUVGD\$SULO SCHOOL NEWS FCMS announces Principal’s List and Honor Roll Fannin County Sports Hall of Fame %\7HUU\'DYLVSentinel Sports Writer For the second consecutive April, the Fannin County Sports Hall of Fame (FCSHOF) held their induction banquet. This year’s inductees ran the gamut in both age and sports and included both athletes and coaches. In keeping with last year’s theme, a team was also selected to be inducted. This year it was the 1993 girls basketball team that won the state championship. Each year I try to pick someone that will pique readers interest, and tell some of their story. That’s a very tough task, considering all of the inductees have attained greatness. This year I chose Travis Summers. Travis is a great example of perseverance and dedication in tough times. I hope you will ¿QGKLVVWRU\DVXSOLIWLQJDV I did. Life is the ultimate match Travis Summers When 2014 Fannin Sports Hall of Famer Travis Summers left high school in 2002, he had some great accomplishments to be proud of and a bright future. Travis was a wrestler. He had a stunning record of 152 wins and only 10 losses in his four years. He had won Area II 4a Championship for the 103 pound class in 1998-1999. He won three state championships and was a team Georgia selection for three different years. As you might expect, Tra- vis was heavily recruited and selected Carson Newman University in Jefferson, Tenn. Carson Newman is a small private Southern Baptist school with lots of tradition and is well respected both academically and in athletics. They offered Summers a full ride scholarship which he accepted. Like most 19-yearROGV LW ZDV 6XPPHUV ¿UVW time away from his parents. Like many of us, the temptations were a bit too much. By his second semester, Summers found himself academically ineligible to compete. He still trained and practiced, and during that time sustained a spinal compression injury. Doctors told Travis and his parents that his time as a wrestler had come to an end. A stunning blow for Travis, who had wrestled since he Lori Chastain, principal at Fannin County Middle School, is proud to announce students that are on the Principal’s List and Honor Roll for the third nine weeks. A tough spot for a 20-year-old who invested so much time and effort in something that was taken away in an instant. After his freshman year, Travis withdrew from Carson Newman and began to reWKLQNKLVOLIHIRUWKH¿UVWWLPH since his dad introduced him to the sport, he was without wrestling. With the help of his parents, Tracy and Tami Summers, Travis enrolled at Dalton State University in Kennesaw, Ga. Now without a scholarship, Summers needed a job. He took a valet position at an upscale country club while he worked on his degree. It would have been easy to become depressed or even give up. But Travis pushed on. He made good grades, stayed out of trouble, and made the best of his situation. Fannin County’s all time winningest wrestler had “reversed the move” on life and now took the advantage. He so impressed his employer that when he received his degree in International Business in 2004, they hired him to help manage the opening of a new facility in California. He is currently working his way up the corporate ladder and is very happy. Summers took the lessons his father and others taught him on the mat and applied them to life. Reinforcing the idea of what wrestling coaches everywhere say to encourage their athletes “stand up” and “don’t quit.” Well played Travis, well played.
