Address Changes Eucharistic Holy Hour The USCCB has issued a “call to prayer” for all Catholics in the United States to focus on life, marriage and religious liberty. This call to prayer includes a monthly Eucharistic Holy Hour on the last Sunday of each month. In response to this, St. Charles will have a Holy Hour for Life, Marriage and Religious Liberty on Sunday, December 30th (The Feast of the Holy Family) beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Day Chapel. These unique pieces were graciously loaned to our parish through the generosity of the Marian Library Collection at the University of Dayton. The crèches that are currently displayed come from the United States (Kitchen Implements Crèche & Native American Indian Crèche), India, Mexico, and Chile. Three other sets were displayed earlier in Advent. They were made in France, Cameroon, and Belgium. St. Charles would like to thank Virginia Saxton, a St. Charles parishioner and volunteer at the Marian Library. Virginia arranged the loan and transportation of the crèches for our parish. Eucharistic Adoration for Advent Eucharistic Adoration will be taking place during the four Sundays of December. Sunday, December 23rd is the final Eucharistic Adoration for Advent. It will be held from 4:006:00 p.m. in the Day Chapel. Art & Environment will be decorating the Church for the Christmas season on Sunday, December 23rd after the 12:15 p.m. Mass. CHARLES BORROMEO Landscape Committee Update: Due to the work of the nasty Emerald Ash Borer an infestation affecting most – upper Mid-Western states – the Ash trees around the St. Charles property will soon have to be removed. There are approximately 15 Ash trees on the St. Charles property – several are in terrible shape. There is no cure for this infestation so the decision has been made to remove them all. DECEMBER 23, 2012 SCHOOL NEWS: School Open House and Spaghetti Dinner January 27th! Please join us for our Annual Open House on Sunday, January 27th, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Bring the entire family to see the school, meet our teachers and participate in our classroom activities. We will be showcasing our preschool for 3 and 4-year-olds, as well as Transitional Kindergarten through 8th Grade for the 2013-2014 school year. Mamma DiSalvo’s Spaghetti Dinner: After Open House join us for our 4th Annual Spaghetti Dinner in our school cafeteria. CHARLES BORROMEO CHRISTMAS WITHOUT THE INTERNET Several Sundays ago the Blondie comic strip in the newspaper made me go: ”Hmmm.” Remember it? Dagwood is engaged in conversation with his wise adolescent friend Elmo as they are walking along in the neighborhood. Dagwood begins by asking: “All ready for Christmas, Elmo?” Elmo replies: “Kind of, Mr. B. Only 19 days, 9 hours and 43 minutes left of being good for Santa. I’m e-mailing Santa on my iPad with some tips for delivering presents this year.” “Tips? What kind of tips?” “For instance, instead of lugging all those presents around on a sleigh, why not just send gift cards?” “But it’s not the same, Elmo. So, would he mail out the gift cards?” “Nah. Santa could just send ‘em to us online. The money he saves on travel and reindeer costs could be tacked onto our loot.” “But with no gifts, wouldn’t Santa’s elves be out of work?” “Mr. B, when’s the last time those dudes had a vacation? And Santa could finally take Mrs. Claus out for Christmas Eve dinner.” “I thought kids looked forward to Santa coming down the chimney,” replies Dagwood. Elmo: “We’re asleep anyway. Santa could just stream virtual video of his flight and we’d be happy.” The last panel has Dagwood sitting in front of the television in his living room. Blondie remarks: “Watching another old Christmas movie?” And Dagwood says:” I’m just trying to remember what the world was like before kids had the Internet.” Now, my first reaction was that Elmo had a few good ideas there. Then I called to Fran and asked her to look at the strip. When I told her that I thought Elmo had a some good points, Fran just gave me the look – you know, the one that all married men get when they introduce a great idea – the one that says: “Mister, you are out of your skull!” But after she had made her wordless point we got to reminiscing about our childhood Christmases. Then what it was like for the children. And finally to sort of lamenting the fact that none of the grandchildren and our great grandchildren live nearby and all sorts of things. Like when Midnight Mass began at midnight. We don’t do that anymore. Like before merchants started putting out Christmas displays before Halloween. We came to realize how blessed we are and need not feel left out. We will experience the joy of the Season in somewhat less traditional ways. We’ll attend the Vigil Mass on the 24th, have empty nester friends over for dinner, then no toys to assemble, not too much eggnog, and some private time, perhaps exchange a small gift or two with each other. Christmas morning will be a time for the Lord, some deep shared reflection and gratitude, a superb breakfast in our kitchen, then perhaps the late Mass. We will spend a great part of Christmas day engaged in long phone conversations with far away family. In previous years we spent a part of the morning and afternoon preparing a special dinner, then carting it over to the nursing home to allow Fran’s mother to celebrate Christmas with her two daughters, their husbands and any other residents who wished to join us. The staff really enjoyed our desserts. DECEMBER 23, 2012 Over the passage of time, Christmas traditions evolve according to circumstances. The kids mature, loved ones move away, in-laws may be added. We adjust, create new traditions. It is all good because Christ is at the center of Christmas. We know that it is all a gift. Ah! Christmas without the Internet. Who needs it? Happy Birthday, Jesus.
