YOUR GUIDE TO
FOUR AMAZING DAYS
04 - 07 AUGUST
www.sirf.co.uk SIRF2016 1
WELCOME
2 SIRF2016 www.sirf.co.uk
Welcome to the 29th SIRF
This year’s programme includes many of the things you’ve told
us that you love as well as things that we hope will bring you
new experiences, surprises and delights. Four days of wall to
wall theatre, circus, dance and music across Stockton town
centre and, for the first time, part of the programme will be
presented in Preston Park.
There’s so much to come and enjoy including: enchanting
shows for children and families with Théâtre de la Toupine’s
parent powered carousel and Kazzum’s playful performance
on a sofa. The eccentric English humour and theatre of Avanti
Display and Wet Picnic. The energetic and colourful SIRF
Community Carnival. Extraordinary circus and dance from
Motionhouse & NoFit State Circus and Tango Sumo. And
ending with a spectacular finale on the Riverside presented by
Commandos Percu.
Also, it’s good to have moments of reflection. This year is the
anniversary of the Battle of the Somme and SIRF16 will open
with a very special performance in both scale and content that
challenges the inhumanity and senselessness of conflicts past
and present. Furious Folly is an astonishing theatre of sound,
light, pyrotechnics and performance that will take place in the
wonderful setting of Preston Park.
We look forward to welcoming you to Stockton-on-Tees for
SIRF16.

FURIOUS FOLLY
MARK ANDERSON
Thursday 4 August & Friday 5 August
9.45–10.45pm
Preston Park
In Furious Folly, Mark Anderson leads a
team of artists attempting to respond to
the inconceivable madness of the First
World War. Taking place as night falls,
in a no-man’s land on the battle front
between the two lines, you will find yourself
immersed within an open-air theatre of
sound, light, pyrotechnics and performance.
Mark Anderson, creator of multi-media
and site specific performance, and a
team of international artists draw on
the anti-war spirit of the early 20th
Century Dadaist movement. Protesting
against the pointlessness of the Great
War and the craziness of the battlefield,
Furious Folly challenges the inhumanity
and senselessness of conflicts past and
present. Part of 14-18 NOW, the UK’s
arts programme for the First World
War centenary.
This is an outdoor performance that
takes place on grass and is standing
room only. Please come prepared for all
weather conditions.
Tickets are free but must be booked in
advance. Information about booking tickets
will be on www.sirf.co.uk from 14 July.
Furious Folly is not suitable for
children under the age of 12 years. This
performance features strobe lighting,
pyrotechnics and smoke effects.

LEAK
Friday 5 August
12.30-1.00pm
Saturday 6 August
1.00-1.30pm
Stockton High Street
Back in 2008 a problem occurred,
it seemed water under high pressure
was somehow mixing with the power
and internet cables, causing strange
occurrences. Similar phenomena have
started to happen in Stockton and these
incidents have prompted the authorities
to bring the Hydrocon team back together.
MR LUCKY’S PARTY
Saturday 6 August
2.00-2.30pm & 7.30-8.00pm
Stockton High Street Fountain
During a tea party a couple begin a
celebration, party hats and even a cake
appears, however with each course
the weather worsens, the downpour
increases and their mood blackens.
Enjoy the bizarre, spectacular and an
unexpected twist.
THE SPURTING MAN
Sunday 7 August
3.30-4.00pm
Special Avanti Finale 8.00-8.30pm
Stockton High Street Fountain
The pompous “Spurting Man” shows his
tricks whilst his assistant, dominated
and undervalued, is given no credit for
the role he plays. The assistant despises
his master. The master ignores the
assistant. The bizarre and unequal
relationship lays the basis for a series
of comic interactions.

JENNIFER ESSEX DANCE
Using real-life text messages from
three couples at various stages of
their relationships as inspiration for
dance duets, each exploring how we
communicate in the digital age. Text
messages, videos and photos are sent to
audiences, giving you an inside view of
the on-stage relationships.
www.replicasdance.com allows you to
follow each storyline before and after
the show. Through inventive ballet and
choreography, Replicas examines:
how communication is changing in the
digital age, what is to be lost and what
can be gained by our new intimacy with
technology and what is the role of touch
in our time – can we be touched by
technology?

MYTHICAL LANDS AND
FANTASTICAL CREATURES
Saturday 6 August
12noon-4.30pm
Stockton High Street and Riverside
Join us on Saturday 6 August when SIRF
Community Carnival will bring vibrant
colour, amazing carnival rhythms and
dance to the streets of Stockton.
The carnival is the Tees Valley’s largest
community celebration and it will bring
together hundreds of people from local
schools, youth and community groups.
The theme of this year’s parade
is Mythical Lands and Fantastical
Creatures and is inspired by tales of
weird and wonderful places that people
have been fascinated with throughout
history - cities of gold; peaceful lands;
cities sunken beneath the ocean and
places where people can be idle and
feast all day long! The theme provides
an opportunity to explore these
fascinating myths and let imaginations
run wild. Come and enjoy the spectacle
on the day and see the fabulous
costume creations made by our carnival
artists. Be amazed as Stockton High
Street is taken over by giant fantastical
creatures and follow them as they
lead the way back down to the river,
where there will be an afternoon of fun
activities and performances including
live music.
