EASTER 2016 ………WHEREVER WE ARE
The season of Lent through to Holy Week provides an opportunity for us to
reflect and to focus on renewing our engagement as Christians: to reflect and pray
for the most vulnerable in our world - to respond to human need, address injustice,
build peace and safeguard creation. Such sentiments are shared by Christians from
many parts of the world.
Like some other fortunate members of the St. Thomas congregation, we were
blessed to be able to have travelled recently. While in Costa Rica, we attended Sunday
services and I was struck by the similarity of the service to ours. Although conducted totally in Spanish (which I
hardly understand), the order of the services was quite familiar, and when the time came to ‘pass the peace’, we were
immediately made at ease by the warmth of the handshakes and smiles of our fellow worshippers – few spoke
English and our Spanish is just basic.
As in the Anglican Communion, the congregation we joined celebrates both Lent and Easter. As a point of
information, Easter’s date varies each year generally following the decision of the Council of Nicea in 325. This set
the celebration of Easter as the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox (March 21). The
earliest possible date for Easter is March 22 and the latest April 25. (see http://www.anglican.ca/help/faq/easter/) .
Some Orthodox churches celebrate Easter Day on a different day. This year, Easter Sunday falls on March 27, a
relatively early date.
The way that Easter is celebrated may differ in various parts of the world. Similar to many other Central and
South American countries, Easter in Costa Rica consists of two weeks and two different festivals: Semana Santa, or
Holy Week - Palm Sunday to Easter Saturday, and Pascua, from Easter (Resurrection) Sunday to the following
Saturday. This is a popular time for people go on holiday. Many people visit their family and friends around the
country and the place where we stayed was expecting to be very busy with an influx of families. Semana Santa is a
time of celebration equal to Christmas and for most is a holiday from work and school.
In Costa Rica (as in Peru) Semana Santa starts with the Palm Sunday tradition of carrying a large statue of
Jesus on a Donkey through the streets of towns and villages before it is taken into the Church for the Palm Sunday
Service. Special elaborately woven palms are also part of the Palm Sunday service and after the service, the palms
are hung on the doors of houses to ward off evil.
Regardless of our traditions or methods of recognition, we all celebrate at this time the unbelievable,
inexplicable triumph of life over death. Jesus, crucified, buried in the tomb and risen again to life.
For all Christians, then, no matter where we are in the world, there is no joy equal to the joy of the Easter
celebration of the Resurrection. Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia!
