Printing sponsored by AUCTION ITEMS Te Ao Hurihuri Jessica Collins 22cm x 22cm Size Medium White acrylic pen on canvas paper Jessica is a past Project K student which is one of the programmes run by FYD (Foundation for Youth Development). FYD also runs the Kiwi Can programme which Treasured Art funds go towards. This piece represents the way that Aotearoa has changed and continues to change and was inspired by the way that FYD helped Jessica get through changes in her life. LOT 1 - $Auction Nude Graham Crow 74 cm x 62 cm Size Medium Acrylic Graham is a well known professional Tauranga artist. His current style is described as formal non objective abstract, however this piece, a beautifully painted nude study painted in 1997 shows Graham’s talent and ability to paint in a more formal yet expressive style. LOT 2 - $Auction Piwakawaka and Clematis Anna Palmer 38cm x 56cm Size Medium Conte pastel on paper Anna has been a professional artist since 1989 and lives near Warkworth north of Auckland. She draws primarily in conte pastel onto black paper and uses strong colour to create energy and form. Her subject is often inspired from our bush and coastal scenes. LOT 3 - $Auction The Collection Paula McNeill 40cm x 30cm Size Medium Mixed Media, collected items Paula lives near Tairua in the beautiful Coromandel. She specialises in abstract works and takes inspiration from the unique Coromandel landscape to create her colourful works. This piece however is simply a collection of interesting found objects. LOT 4 - $Auction 2 Lake Te Anau Ross Lee 51cm x 92 cm Size Medium Oil on stretch canvas Ross is a professional landscape artist based in the Bay of Plenty. His realistic paintings capture the beauty of nature and the peace and tranquility of the particular setting. His ability to capture the light and majestic feel of powerful skies and looming mountains helps to create the illusion of actually being there. LOT 5 - $Auction Wombat Dreaming Denis Ebatarinja 66 cm x 72 cm Size Medium Oil on canvas Denis Ebatarinja now in his 80’s is an Aboriginal artist from the Northern Territory. This work from the 1980’s captures the very important spiritual and physical connection between animals and the land that Aboriginals believe exists and also features the traditional colourful dabbing brushwork symbolic of Aboriginal art. As well as paintings he is known for his earthenware pieces one of which is held by the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. LOT 6 - $Auction The Language of Paint ... Red Carole Shepheard 32 cm x 32 cm Size Medium Acrylic Dr Carole Shepheard is a retired Professor of Fine Arts at Elam School of Fine Arts. She is also a holder of an ONZM for her contribution to visual arts as an artist, educator and writer. She currently lives and works in Kawhia. She is a multi media artist whose work is held in national and international collections. This piece in acrylic paint also uses dried acrylic skinned paint to give it texture and depth. It is one of a series of three all in different bold colours. LOT 7 - $Auction Small European Oil Unknown 36 cm x 28 cm Size Medium Oil Although signed the artist of this late 19th century oil is unknown. The oil landscape painted in the classical style is of a bridge over the river Po in northern Italy. The piece was given as a gift to the late George Harrison, founder of Tauranga’s iconic Harrisons Gallery by the late Greg Whitecliffe, co founder of The Whitecliffe College of Art & Design in Auckland. LOT 8 - $Auction 3 Under The Trees John Towers 25cm x 51cm Size Medium Acrylic John is a realist painter who resides in Mt Maunganui. Also a keen photographer, John’s paintings are all generated from his own images. His works are predominantly coastal scenes from around Tauranga and Mt Maunganui but he also paints other subjects as inspired. LOT 9 - $Auction Light up my life Lynne Brown 39cm x 36cm Size Medium Acrylic on board framed Lynne has been painting for a number of years enjoying the spontaneity of acrylic on canvas. She uses a layered transparent paint technique to build up and develop her abstract style. She enjoys landscape, combining the recognisable with the imaginary. This piece depicting autumn trees uses her technique of layering to achieve depth as well as featuring gold leaf. LOT 10 - $Auction GE Mandala Mini Fiona Kerr Gedson 32 cm x 32 cm Size Medium Pheasant and peacock feathers Fiona lives and works from her home studio near Opotiki and is a celebrated and respected member of the New Zealand art scene. Her work includes intricate weaving and collages using feathers in a fusion of Maori weaving styles and European materials. These are then elegantly displayed behind glass in their own frame. She exhibits nationally as well as internationally and has won numerous awards. LOT 11 - $Auction Historic Wharf Street 1914 Raymond Jennings 78 cm x 135 cm Size Medium Pencil with UV varnish-wash on canvas Raymond is an Auckland based artist who is known for his colourful oil paintings, pen and ink drawings and sculpture. This pen and ink work depicting Wharf St in Tauranga in 1914 is one of a series of large works that aims to lift the past into our present. Historic scenes like this are often only seen as small photographs in books rather than as large works like this piece. LOT 12 - $Auction 4 Two Cups Julia Blackler 50cm x 50cm Size Medium Oil Julia has been painting for over 25 years and is self taught. She has worked in various areas including stained glass, porcelain, spinning and wool dying. More recently she has been concentrating on painting as well as watercolour and pastel and has a varied style including contemporary and impressionistic. She has a particular interest in still life featuring unusual objects. LOT 13 - $Auction Molesworth Ben Reid 55 cm x 76 cm Size Medium Watercolour wash & graphite Ben is a mixed media artist and printmaker who lives in Hanmer Springs. His mixed media works are based on studies of historic buildings from around New Zealand that are of interest to him. Inspiration for his prints come from the fragile relationship that New Zealanders have with their natural environment and features endangered animals and birds. LOT 14 - $Auction Te Pakanga o Kokowai Duane Moyle 68 cm x 95 cm Size Medium Oil on board Duane is a local part time artist with a keen interest in local early Tauranga history. This piece is based on the war between Ngati Ranginui of Mauao and Ngai Te Rangi of Maketu which occurred circa 1700. The painting is looking up at Mauao from the base with an overlaying tukutuku structure based on the Kaokao pattern which is thought to represent the arms and torso of warriors in the action of a haka. I painted as I journeyed through the high country, camping out or staying in huts and avoiding roads and people and focusing on the spectacular scenery. I was confronted by this extraordinary landscape one day and painted it from memory and a photograph years later (2006/7). They refer to the collective strength of diversity, suggesting unity in tension. I have juxtaposed the mechanical sureness of my aho motif with gestural, discordant colour across a grid that contains and releases painterly control. The grid itself comprises aho, modernist and cultural threads that converge in paint. In 1967 Renee had a piece chosen for the prestigious Kelliher Exhibition in Wellington. She died in 2013.
