Eine Einladung
In this unit you will learn:
• to ask for and give the date
• to say when it is your birthday and ask someone when their birthday is
• how to accept/refuse an invitation
• about the seasons in Germany.

Das Datum
1.1
To ask for and give the date, you first need to know the months and the
ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc), so study the following points carefully
and note them in your Notebook:
Die Monate
The names of the months in German are very similar to the months in English:
Januar
Februar
März
April
Mai
Juni
Juli
August
September
Ordinal numbers
These are numbers like ‘first, second, third, etc’.
The normal way to make a number ordinal is:
for 1 – 19, add –te or –ten
for 20 – 31, add –ste or –sten.

Study their formation in German by looking at Kb p73, Fokus b.
Did you notice there are a few unusual forms? (They don’t just add –te)
1 = eins
3 = drei
7 = sieben
8 = acht
but

but
first = erste
third = dritte
seventh = siebte
eighth = achte
(leaving out the ‘en’)
(leaving out a ‘t’)
All the rest, however, are very predictable.

Now listen to Audio CD 2 track 43 while you read Kb p73, Fokus b., to
familiarise yourself with the patterns.

The key structures are: (Copy these into your Notebook)
Der Wievielte ist heute?
- What is today’s date? (heute = today)
Heute ist der erste Januar.
- Today is the first of January.
Wann hast du Geburtstag?
- When do you have your birthday?
Ich habe im Februar Geburtstag.
- I have my birthday in February.
Mein Geburtstag ist am zweiten Februar. – My birthday is on the second of
February.
Mein Geburtstag ist am Sonntag.
- My birthday is on Sunday.
There are a few points to note here:

When saying ‘in’ a month, use im

When saying ‘on’ a day or date, use am

Note that the first Lerntipp has a neat summary of which forms to use
when giving the date.
2.2
Now do Mach mit! 2, ii, writing 4 new dialogues which follow the pattern of
the original, substituting the dates given.
Do part iii as well, providing your own details.
Be ready to do these dialogues with your teacher when you next speak.

If you said ‘invitation’, ‘to’ (person), ‘on the’ (date), ‘at’ (time), ‘where’
(venue) and ‘from’(person), then you have understood the invitation!

Now go to your workbook, Ab p95, Ex 15, Kommst du zur Party? and see if
you can match these responses with the correct invitation in your course
book (as in 3.1).

Die Jahreszeiten: Frühling, Sommer, Herbst, Winter
4.1
Because the German-speaking countries are in the Northern Hemisphere,
their seasons occur at different times of the year from those in Australia,
which is in the Southern Hemisphere.
Read Kb p75, Infos: Die Jahreszeiten in Deutschland, Österreich und
der Schweiz.
4.2
In your Notebook, list the seasons in German and English, then write
beside them (in German) the months which correspond with that season,
eg. Spring
