Dear Parents, Staff and Students,
As we enter the final week of the school year, I would like to take this opportunity to extend my
sincere appreciation to all those who have contributed in whatever way to this 2014 school year. It
has been a year of change and transition for many but most importantly it has been a year of growth
and learning. To those staff, students and families who will be leaving our school at the end of the
year, we wish you all the best and hope the future brings the realisation of many hopes and dreams.
On behalf of the entire school community we acknowledge the contribution of our wonderful Year 6
and Year 7 students. It is our hope that all students will take with them some part of the OLHOC
community as they move on to new places and adventures.

A reminder that school finishes at 12 mid-day. Supervision will be provided by relief teachers from
12.00 - 2.30pm if you are unable to collect your child/ren at 12.00pm. OSHC will operate as per
normal from 2.30pm. On behalf of the OLHOC staff, I would like to wish all families a happy and holy
Christmas. We look forward to seeing everyone in 2015.

An in-service will be held for all volunteers on Tuesday morning 3rd February 2015 at 8:15am. All volunteers will
be required to attend this meeting.

OLHOC Travel Smart program provides a safe and supervised environment for students to travel to school in a

140 Chrome books and 90 iPads are now ready for 2015. This has been completely funded in
the budget with no additional cost to parents.

Staff selection still in process for 2015. Mrs Burns and Mrs Butler have both been appointed
as Assistant Principals at St Rita’s and St Gerard Magella respectively. Two TI teachers, Mr
Tuavale and Mrs Stacey Whiteside and current Catholic Ed Officer, Mrs Cathy McCarthy will be
teaching next year. And Mrs Kendall Jones and Mrs Belinda Huxley will both return to full time
positions. Remaining part time and school officer positions will be announced in the next few
weeks.

Language. Ms Lyza Welch accepted position teaching Italian at St Mary’s. CES has decided
that language will only be taught to Grades 5 & 6 in 2015 and will be one of the 4 Asian
languages, Chinese, Japanese, Mandarin or Indonesian.
OLHOC has decided to teach
Indonesian.
Advertising a Visual Arts teaching position.
Grant requests for 2015: No formal Grant Proposal supplied
$5000 Stephanie Alexander Garden Project- Have already had significant corporate with
Bunnings supplying $2000 worth of equipment and labour to setup. 3 other families/
businesses have donated $500. Project aimed at Grades 3 & 4 in 2015.
$2500 for Science Day
$4500 for additional aluminium seating.

HAST has another 6 months left to run. Hoping to apply for a grant to link the back path to
the bottom of the bike shed.

OLHOC was represented at all 4 meetings of the Diocesan Council. Thanks to Nancy, Vicki and
Louise for coming to various meetings. Nick has served on the Diocesan Council for the past 5
years.
With the new Constitution, the Diocesan Council role has become a part of the Executive
Committee.
Will send a letter to Vince and members to thank them for support throughout the year.
Nick has offered to write a letter to the Diocesan Council to ask if OLHOC can host one of the
meetings next year.

Onsite meeting about traffic safety held on October 21st.
Present were Nick Hardy, Luke
Brown, Terry James, Sarah Gosling and a Police Officer. Very productive meeting. Observed
traffic at drop off/pick up zones at pick up area.

improvement to safety.

Life Membership: Mr Luke Brown
P & F asked to consider acknowledging Mrs Val Cooper for her contribution to the Parish with
a P & F Life Member award. She has been the President of various Catholic committees from
1965-till now. She assists weekly at Mass. Val was convenor for over 40 OLHOC fetes. She
was the initiator of the Heavenly Bods exercise group, participates in the monthly morning
melodies, and food drives (lamingtons) to raise money. She is an exceptional loving and
sincere person. All present were in favour of this request.

ICT review:

Google doc positives: group tests are marked in 30 seconds and allow comparison of the
results from the start of the year to the end.
Shows the amount of work each child contributes to project. Can also allow group work on a
document from individual houses when a document is “shared” between the group members
ie. It is all permission based.
Allows children to be more creative with displays and styles etc.
IPad- reflector app which allows the information an iPad to be displayed on a computer or an
Apple TV.
-iMovie used to create mini presentations.
House Captaincy Process- Top 4 girls and top 4 boys who got the most votes got the positions.
The result is that the Captains may not necessarily be Captain of their own house colour.
Parent expressed disappointment that loyalty to the child’s house colour was not considered.
Are other children in that family then expected to change house colour?
Mr Brown response- Has changed from members of the House selecting their own Captain and
Vice-Captain to the voting being done by the whole school. The students listened to each of
the candidate’s speeches and the voted to select the top 4 boys and top 4 girls. He believes it
is more important to recognise children with greater leadership material than worrying about
what house colour they’re from. Another factor is that the house sizes are uneven and this
year opportunity only offered to Grade 6 as Board felt that Grade 5 is too young. He believes
the students were well aware what House colour each of the candidates was in.
Tuckshop:
Meeting Closed:
Petition against Tuckshop selling lollies. Meeting to be held next week between Luke and the
Tuckshop staff to discuss the ‘Red, Amber, Green’ food guide.

Graduation / Thanksgiving Mass on Tuesday 2nd December @ 6.30pm. Formal Uniform
required.
Students not attending Mass will not be able to attend the celebration day at Paradise Palms.

Graduation / Thanksgiving Mass on Wednesday 3rd December @ 6.30pm. Formal Uniform is
required.

A BBQ buffet has been organised for lunch on both days. This includes: sausages, meat patties, bread rolls, lettuce, tomato, cheese and
sauces. A drink station is also provided, which includes water and cordial. Students are welcome to bring a small amount of money to
purchase any snacks or other drinks.
Buses are booked to depart the school at 8.30am, so students need to be at school by 8.10am (at the latest), in
order to be seated and ready to go by 8.30am.
Students are required to wear closed in footwear to school but can bring thongs to wear during their time at
Paradise Palms. Students are asked to wear sun smart clothing and bring swimmers, a towel, a wide brimmed
hat and a plastic bag to store wet garments. Sunscreen will be provided although students are welcome to bring
their own.
The arrival time back at OLHOC will be approximately 2.40pm.
During Children's Liturgy at the 8am masses at OLHOC Church on the 14th and 21st December
children will be taught the words and actions to a song to be performed at the Christmas Masses.
All are welcome to attend.

Dear Parents/Carers,
Simone and I would love to say a HUGE THANK YOU for all of your support for our
school Tuckshop this year.
We have had an absolutely fantastic year! Also a big thank you to everyone who
has helped us in the Tuckshop with our Catering on and off campus as well as all
our school year events. We could not do these days without
your help and continued support, so once again Thank You.
Simone and I would love to wish everyone a very Happy and Holy Christmas.

It is hard to believe that this is the final newsletter of
2014. I say it every year, but boy the years are whizzing
by.
As a classroom teacher this time of year is
wonderful to reflect on the students within your
class. It is a blessing to be able to watch
students blossom in the 12 months we are
graced with their presence. It is a joy to witness
children mature in Persistence, Confidence,
Resilience, Organisation and Getting Along
throughout the year.
Here is a beautiful activity that parents might
want to participate in over the holidays; each
night, talk to your children about recognising
where they witnessed the spirit if Jesus
throughout the day. Ask your child where Jesus
Resurrected message is recognised through
people around us in the NOW of our lives.
These things could be a simple as a sibling
sharing a toy, children sharing a packet of chips
with each other, or helping the family with the
dishes. For the older children you could
challenge them with a self-reflection question,
“Where did I show the spirit of Jesus to others today?"
This daily consideration enables children to reflect on
being a more positive person. They begin to look for the
good in others, and themselves, and appreciate God’s
gifts around them.
I sincerely wish every family a happy and safe holiday.

ST. VINNIES’ CHRISTMAS APPEAL CONCLUDES
This morning, we had a handover of goods
gathered for our St Vinnies’ Christmas Appeal.
We will however continue the appeal until the
final day of school. If you haven’t donated
anything yet and would like to, or if you simply
want to give more, Vinnies will be happy to
accept your kindness and direct it to those in
need in the local community.

END OF YEAR EUCHARISTS
This year we have three Eucharists to see our
school year out. Tonight and tomorrow
evening at 6:30 pm, are our Thanksgiving
Eucharist for Year 6 and Year 7 students
respectively. At these Eucharists we give
thanks for the gift of those people who have
travelled with us for a time and are now
leaving our school community. In particular we
farewell our final year students. Yr 6 & 7
students and school captains elect, are
required to wear their formal school
uniform to their respective Eucharists.
On Friday, at 8:45 am, our school community
celebrates an Advent Eucharist. This is our
final Eucharist for the year, one that clearly
looks towards the coming of God, who dwells
among us in the person of Jesus. All students
are required to wear their formal school
uniform to this Eucharist.
Parents are welcome to join us at these
celebrations.
AN ADVENT BLESSING
Blessed is the one who watches and waits,
for the Son, sent of the Father, followed by the
Holy Spirit.
He is our light.
He is our salvation.
Be blessed as you wait the night of His arrival.
