For the institutional accreditation,
Dr. Ali Azad mentioned that the
CAA has visited Abu Dhabi
University twice -- the first visit
for the initial licensure, and the
recent one for the re-licensure of
the institution.
As for program accreditation, Dr.
Azad added that ADU has hosted
CAA visiting team in every
occasion when the University has
proposed offering a new degree
program.
In all, while the
numbers of visits to Al Ain
campus have been around six to
eight, Khalifa City campus has
been visited by the CAA team in
far greater occasions.
Noting that the official report of
the re-licensure visit has not been
received
yet,
Dr.
Azad’s
assessment of the CAA’s latest
visit is positive. Based on brief
comments made by some members
of the visiting team, it seems that
the CAA is pleased with the
progress of Al Ain campus
towards enhancing the quality of
education for its students.
“The members of the visiting team
mentioned that our students were
very pleased with their campus,
and in particular, perceived the
University’s Academic Integrity
Policy positively,” Dr. Azad
added.

a couple of days in advance.
The nominees had their posters
and
flyers
distributed
throughout the campus.
This year’s initiative was to
allow the nominees of the
student council to approach
their fellow students and
classmates. They did this by
talking about themselves and
what they intend to do to
enhance the students’ campus
life on a recorded video. This
video went viral three days
As the Election Day began, the
nominees were running around
campus convincing their friends
and other students to vote for
them. Moreover, the buzz at the
male side was also happening
in a similar way. “There were
only two nominees for my
position, which means I only
have one competitor and
frankly, I really hope I win!!”
Bishr Hammash, nominee for
the position of Vice President
(V.P) of Club Organizer said.
At the end of the election day,
the Student Support Services

Security camera
System for your
safety
By Fathima Moidu
Are you wondering why
there are security camera
systems all over the campus?
This article explains the
reasons for you.
Al Ain Campus is using a
security camera system in for
the security and safety of the
faculties, students, and staff.
Abu Dhabi TV Channel
The students of Public
Relations along with Dr.
Azza Ahmed, have visited
the Abu Dhabi TV Channel
on Thursday, 18th October,
2012 at 12 p.m.
The purpose of the visit was
to make the students know
what they have studied has
been applied in reality. The
students were exposed to a
lot of information regarding
the studios, the programs,
and the reports. The news
release which doesn’t serve
any benefit to the people and
the society will be ignored
by TV editors. “It was the
actual thing we studied in
our chapters, we all really
benefited from this trip as it
showed how theoretical part
was in practical” Fathima
Security Camera at ADU Al Ain
Campus
Some perceive this profound
system as bad and others
think it is invasion of
privacy, but the main
concern is to protect their
safety and security, not only
to educate them. “I have seen
cameras
all
over
the
university, which makes me
feel uncomfortable that they
are watching us. We don’t
require cameras all over the
university”, an ADU Student
said.
10
The ADU Spectator Newsletter 2012
However, there are issues
that have come from the
ADU students in Al Ain
campus regarding violations
of security and safety
protocols, so these cameras
are for their benefits.
The main purpose for having
security cameras is to serve
as a mean of evidence for the
occurrences in the campus
such as fire, harassment, etc.
“If security and safety isn’t
achieved for our students,
then education becomes
irrational,” Dr. Ali Azad,
Director of ADU Al-Ain
campus, said.
In addition, when people see
the security cameras, they
will stop themselves from
doing bad things which
benefits everyone.
“We don’t believe having
the security cameras on
campus is an intrusion in any
way because the university is
a public place for everyone”
Dr. Ali added.
Having security camera
system at ADU is to ensure
safety and security for all the
members as well as visitors
of ADU Al-Ain Campus.

BlackBerry
Messenger: the
preferable
communication
mean amongst
Al Ain Campus
students!
By Maral and Rawan
Nowadays, there is various
communication means which are
effectively being used at Al Ain
campus’s Abu Dhabi University
among
students
regarding
educational matters.
Students using Blackboard on BB
Messenger
The communication means are the
popular Blackberry messenger,
Whatsapp messenger, texting via
SMS, using the blackboard and
email accounts which are issued by
Abu Dhabi University in order to
communicate with the director of
Al Ain campus’s Abu Dhabi
University, Dr. Ali Azad, Ph.D,
professors/faculty
members,
finance/registration
department,
submitting
assignments,
and
talking with other fellow students.
But what is the preferable
communication mean according to
a student conducted by sample?
Students of Abu Dhabi University
majoring in Public Relations and
Communication in Al Ain campus
conducted a survey asking students
(female and male) about their
preferable communications means.
The results of the survey turned
out to be that most of the students
prefer using Blackberry messenger
and phone calls in order to
communicate with their fellow
students. When it comes to
communicating with professors
and faculty members, most
students
prefer
using
the
Blackboard. In addition, 70% of Al
Ain
campus’s
Abu
Dhabi
University students favored phone
calls as well as talking to the
registration
and
finance
department face to face during the
enrollment period and fees
payments. That is also stated by
some faculty members. “I prefer
that the finance and registration
departments should be contacted
face to face which is easier
because phone lines could be busy
most of the time” Dr. Abdullah
Ammar, Assistant dean of College
of Arts & Sciences, said.
However, some students in Al Ain
Campus have a different opinion.
“Using Blackberry messenger
helps in easing the communication
between the students and the staff.
“Dalia Adel, a Marketing student,
said. She added that students
mainly use e-mails and Blackboard
because it is the only formal way
they can contact their professors.
“On the other hand, if there was an
urgent issue it would be preferable
to contact the professors face to
face,” Dalia continued .
“Blackboard is such an innovative
tool and it can hold so much of our
academic information.” Uzma
Chaudhry, finance student said.
Commenting on the survey results,
Dr. Ali Azad, Ph.D, Al Ain
Campus Director stated; “We have
two most useful and practical tools
Issue#2
to communicate for educational
matters which are the blackboard
and the email account which is
used by Abu Dhabi University.
Since we have these for related
purposes, then there is no need for
other social media communication
tools like blackberry messenger.”
Dr. Azad suggests that blackboard
is the most effective way for
students to communicate when it
comes to academic issues. Email
accounts, which are issued by Abu
Dhabi University, to be used for
administrative issues. He added:
“when it comes to campus life and
social activities, since we have a
Facebook page; it would be an
effective tool of communication
because it provides students
updates about social activities
occurring
at
Abu
Dhabi
University’s Al Ain campus.”
However, Dr. Salam Abdullah,
professor
of
business
administration, prefers to use more
than one communication methods
between students and various
departments in the university.
“This is fine, since this is what
students prefer, multichannel are
always better than one.” he said.
With the popularity of using
blackberry messenger, students
now not only can they use it for
instant messaging, but also for
collaborating with other fellow
students, professors and staff
regarding educational matters.

Exclusive
Interview with
Dr Abdullah
Ammar
By: Caline Boghos
Dr. Abdullah Ammar is the
oldest faculty member in Al
Ain’s College of Arts and
Sciences who joined Abu-Dhabi
University in 2008. Since
then, he has received a number
of awards that include the
Distinguished Teacher Award
seven years in a row in his
teaching career life, The
Collegiality Award, and The
Distinguished
Researcher
Award. Also, he presented
research papers in a number of
international
conferences,
Spain, Turkey, Malaysia, Italy,
Germany, UAE, France, and
Japan. Moreover, he gained
the respect of all his colleagues
and students that makes him
the best candidate to occupy
the position of assistant dean
of CAS in Al Ain Campus last
July. Caline Boghos has met
with him and came back with
the following interview.
1. Brief background about
yourself.
I am associate professor of
English
Education.
My
education journey started with a
BA Degree in English, then a
Special Diploma degree in
education, MA Degree in
English Education (TEFL) and
a PhD in English Education
(TEFL) that I got in a joint
scholarship in the University of
Pittsburgh, USA. I have a rich
history of international work
experience in well-reputed
educational institutions starting
with Egypt, then USA, Saudi
Arabia, and finally UAE. Since
I joined Abu Dhabi University
in 2008, I have held different
administrative positions such as
the coordinator of the English
program, the coordinator of the
College of Arts & Sciences,
and recently the Assistant Dean
of the College of Arts &
Sciences.
2. As the new assistant dean
of CAS, what is your role
in ADU?
One of the primary goals of the
College of Arts & Sciences is
to
provide
educational
experiences
tailored
to
students’ needs and aspirations.
This necessitates that students
be provided with needed
assistance,
guidance,
counseling,
and
quality
education that meet these needs
and actualize these aspirations.
To this end and in line with
ADU orientation towards more
autonomy in Alain Campus, the
Assistant Dean position has
been recently created. In
addition to representing the
Dean of CAS, Dr. Radwan
Aljarrah, I have been delegated
responsibilities needed for
closer
and
smoother
management of Alain CAS
faculty/ students-related issues.
Issue#2
3. What are the new
programs offered in CAS
(applied and planned)?
In CAS, we have a very strong
orientation to be the college of
choice in the area of arts,
humanities,
and
applied
sciences with a promising plan
for offering undergraduate as
well as graduate programs
tailored to the needs of the local
community, the Gulf Area and
the Middle East. In a retreat
organized
by
the
new
enthusiastic Dean of CAS,
Professor Radwan Aljarrah, a
thorough discussion of future
programs has taken place with
all faculty members from
different departments. This
yielded a list of suggested
degree programs in various
fields of Arts & Sciences most
likely to be offered in the next
few years. Regarding the
degree programs in Alain
Campus, we are currently
running two undergraduate
programs including “BA in
English” and “BA in Mass
Communication”, and two
graduate programs including
the Professional Diploma in
Teaching,
and
MA
in
Educational Leadership. In the
area of Mass Communication,
three Arabic degree programs
are to be offered soon including
Strategic Communication, Print
Journalism, and TV Journalism.
In addition, we have a number
of degree programs that Alain
students can take according the
2+2 (or 3+1) plan where they
study the foundational and
elective courses in Alain and
then complete their study plans
in the ADU campus in Abu
Dhabi; an option that adds more

4. Are there any changes in
CAS
in
terms
of
administration,
academics, etc…?
In line with the overall
orientation
towards
more
autonomy in Alain Campus, a
number of new administrative
positions have been created in
Alain CAS including an
assistant dean (Dr. Abdullah
Ammar),
coordinators
of
various programs such as Mass

should they have any questions,
concerns or problems. Our
ultimate objective is to
establish
a
stress-free
environment
where
CAS
students can exploit their
potentials to the full and
accomplish their expectations
in an enjoyable, rich, and
resourceful environment. This
of course can’t be done without
a team spirit amongst CAS
faculty members to handle
Alain students’ problems and
spell out any uncertainties they
might have. To this end, CAS
many degree programs and
would hopefully be a story of
success in the university.
Towards this goal, we are
planning not only for increasing
the number of programs offered
but also for high quality
curricula
and
educational
practices.

interests with the career
opportunities. When the
ideal career was recognized,
a link will be appeared that

degree
programs.
The
objective was to know
student’s
professional
interest and support them
with ADU study programs,
in a fun and communicating
way so as to increase brand
awareness and eventually
raise students’ recruitment
rates
at
Abu

The idea of the winners’
concept was to develop an
interactive game that will be
made available through the
ADU website. “The game
would be designed to
replicate
a
virtual
organization.
So,
when
students enter the gaming
zone, they are taken to an
organization, and follow a
path that matches their career
interests”, Bushra Jaleel,
Teaching Assistant, said.
For
instance,
people
concerned in marketing
would be reserved to areas
where they can solve
customer enquiries. As soon
as the student effectively
completes the levels, the
game will show an ideal
Career that matches their
