Our LCHS Grade 12 Formal Graduation Ceremonies will be held on Saturday, May 28th at
the Edmonton Jubilee Auditorium, 1:00 pm followed by the Formal Banquet at the Leduc
Recreation Centre (5:30 pm). Our LCHS Parent’s Association is sponsoring an After Grad Activity (non-alcohol) after the Formal Banquet at LCHS.
Our next School Council and Parents’ Association Meeting is on Wednesday , May 4th, 2016
starting at 6:30 pm in our Staff Room. We thank our School Council and Parent Connections
for the superb Road to High School & Beyond Workshop for incoming grade 9 students and
parents that was held on Thursday, April 28th at LCHS.
Congratulations to our LCHS Band and Teacher/Conductor Mr. Don Steenwinkel for their superb Silver Medal Performance at the Whistler, British Columbia National Music Festival. We are proud of you all!
Congratulations to our LCHS Medical Services Helping Phalanges teams for their Alberta St.
John’s Ambulance Award winning championships held Saturday, April 30th at West Edmonton Mall. Thank you to Coach/Teacher Ms. Jennifer Lasychuk for your mentorship and help
with our superb medical services teams!
Our LCHS Drama productions for the One Act Competition (Zones) were superb and well attended by our community. Thank you to Mr. Jim Nahrebeski, students and many community
volunteers for the exemplary productions and all the best at provincials in Red Deer!

SPANISH NEWS
On Friday May 6, let's get a taste of the Cinco de Mayo by WHACKING A PINATA FOR A
LOONIE!! Join Mr. Mateo at Room 112 during Lunch Time and get a chance at giving one blow
to one of the Spanish Program's Pinatas for 1 dollar (or a can of food). Profits and/or food raised
will be kindly donated to the Local Food Bank.
Students from the Spanish Program will have the opportunity to give a try to Latin American Cuisine by taking part on a Lunch Trip to El Rancho Restaurant on Thursday, May 19th in Edmonton.
They will be leaving at 11:00 am and returning at 2:30 pm. For further details, see Mr. Mateo in
room 112.

LCHS Sweeps St John Ambulance First Aid Provincial Competition
Imagine a concert rehearsal taking place on stage when something goes very wrong and the
stage collapses without warning. Equipment, instruments and debris are hurled into the audience. Six spectators close to the stage sustain various injuries, some are critical. This was
the scenario for St John Ambulance Provincial First Aid Competition April 30 th, 2016.
Leduc Composite High School was well represented with four teams participating at the
competition in Edmonton on Saturday. Our school club members competed against sixteen
other teams from Alberta industries and other high schools from Edson and Red Deer. The
accident scenes were staged in West Edmonton Mall with high school actors from Tofield
and St. Albert.
For Emergency First Aid, our school team "Code Blue" with members Ashley Poitras, Emma
Read, Kathleen Hastings and Natasha Sparkes placed second. First place winners
were Carolyn Geiger, Enreet Mann and Ravreet Gill with team 'Trauma Trinity". The Team
Leader individual award was won by Team Captain Carolyn Geiger.
In Standard First Aid, Team "Contageous Cure" with Sharidyn Tischer, Nadia van
Bruinessen, Kailey Schatz and Mallikarjun Moola was runner-up. The competition winners
were the “Helping Phalanges" (yes that's fay-lan-geez, and it means fingers) with Susan Van't
Hoff, Jessie Behiel, Jacoba Snellen and Emily Brezden. In addition, the "Helping Phalanges" was the highest score team out of the twenty teams in the competition.
Thanks to our parents and spectators who came to cheer on Saturday. Thanks to Ms Lasychuk for running the club, and congratulations to all the club members who supported each
other and represented our school in such a fine way.

Film & Media Studies (FMS) has setup an Instagram account that features images by
FMS students and alumni. The idea is that selected students will post three images,
over the course of a week, based on a visual or conceptual theme of their choosing. The first featured photographer is FMS alumni Evangeline Belzile. Evangeline
was in the first FMS class that Mr. Templeton taught at LCHS and has since moved on
to study at Emily Carr University in the media arts. Her work in both the FMS and Art
programs was very compelling!!

Leduc Central Interact Club Book Drive
The Leduc Central Interact Club is collecting books to raise funds for the
Leduc and District Emergency Shelter. All proceeds will go to helping families who are having financial difficulties. We will be holding a contest that
will run through May for block one classes. Each class has a box in their
room that will be used to collect donated books and the class that collects
the most books will win a prize.

SKILLS CANADA NEWS
Dimitri Pontikes, a Grade 12 student at
Leduc Composite High School represented
his school's welding program at the 2016 Edmonton Regional Skills Competition in the
Welding event at NAIT on April 9. Dimitri
placed 4th among the region's finest high
school competitors, which qualifies him to
advance to the Alberta Provincial Skills
Competition at the Edmonton Expo Centre.
The provincial competition is a 2-day event
which will involve the top 4 students from
the 5 provincial regions. Dimitri has already
proven himself a formidable competitor,
having eliminated 25 of the Edmonton Region's top welding candidates, and has the
necessary skills to win at the provincial level
as well.

PEP Buddies
I think it's awesome that these three young gentlemen Zach, Justin and Matt use their block 3 spares
to join us in the gym. They exercise, have fun with us and compete when they could do anything else with their
spares. They choose us out of the goodness of their hearts. These guys, my classmates and myself, have
found a connection that has made a big difference to my classmates and myself. We have created more fun
while learning because we are like a family of our own.
Zach was approached last year to join us and he did and enjoyed it so much that this year he changed
his courses so he was able to volunteer in our Phys Ed class. Zach is kind and soft spoken however; when he's
in the gym with us he demonstrates his athletic abilities and shares his knowledge with others. He is on the
LCHS Tigers football and basketball teams. Zach loves to dunk the basketball in the net and he is very good at
it too! His favourite sport is football and almost any sport he’s in. We know when he's on the court when we see
bright gym clothes and red shoes!
Justin began to come and workout in the mezzanine at the beginning of this
semester. He could hear us having fun playing basketball, and then asked if he could
join in. Of course we said YES! He enjoyed that first day and has been coming back
for more every day. Justin has told me a few things about his experience being in a
wheel chair for 6 months. It was very difficult for him for the first 4 months because of
all the obstacles he had encountered. Then he realized that he had no reason to be
so negative because other people were in a wheelchair every day. His advice to
himself was "don't dwell on the negatives ". He also told me that he looks up to me
and that made my heart cry with happiness!
I first met Matt in the carpentry shop where we asked Mr Lapierre if someone could fix my stylus. A
couple of prototypes were made for me to try. We spoke in the cafeteria with Matt and he offered to make me a
new iPhone stylus holder out of wood. He told me the reason why he helps out my class in gym is just for the
fun of it and to make new Friends! Matt also experienced life for a short time in a wheelchair.
I would also like to send a Big thank you to the cast of "Annie" for taking time to sing "Your never fully dressed
without a smile" for my current event project earlier this year!
I also want to thank the teachers for allowing these students to take the time from their classes this has made
my first year at LCHS an enjoyable one!

The LCHS automotives dept. operates a garage service and is more than willing to
make and provide most repairs and auto services. The students perform good
quality work which is closely monitored by two journeyman mechanic teachers
and shop EAs. The students get a real learning opportunity and you get quality
service for a greatly discounted price.

Graduation Tickets
Online tickets sales for Graduation Commencement, Banquet and Dance are now on
sale through the Powerschool Parent Portal. Tickets can also be purchased through
the Accounting Office if families do not have access to a computer and/or debit/credit card.
Tickets for both Commencement, Banquet and Dance will be placed in envelopes
with the graduate’s name on the envelope and will be distributed out of the main office any time after Friday, May 13, 2016.
We are encouraging all graduates to participate in the Grad Processional and Dance
occurring at 8:45 at the LRC. Graduates should be at the LRC at 8:30 to be ready
for the Processional. All students that do not purchase a Banquet ticket will need to
purchase a Dance ticket to be a part of the Grad Processional and Dance. Families
do not need to purchase Dance tickets but are welcome to come to see the Grad Processional and Dance at the LRC.
After all graduates have had an opportunity to purchase tickets to commencement
we will put any additional tickets for commencement on sale through the online system on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at 12:00 a.m.
Additional Commencement tickets that were sold after Tuesday, May 17, 2016, can
be picked up in the main office any time after Thursday May 19, 2016.
If you have questions, please speak to Mrs. Thiessen in the Learning Centre or Mrs.

The FORENSIC SCIENCE class at Leduc Composite High School was fortunate to have 2
great guest speakers in April to help with our Arson unit. Following a day of lecture and video
clips to introduce the material, we were fortunate enough to have Gerry Kelly, the deputy fire chief
with the Leduc Protective Services and Gord Mellon, a private canine arson investigator with RaeTech Fire Investigations Ltd. along with his amazing golden retriever Sammy in to teach us more.
Both presenters had lots of visuals (photographs and bagged evidence) along with stories
and demonstrations to cover some of the details about determining if a fire was deliberately
set. Sammy did several amazing demonstrations and then Gord told us about the process
of training that both he and Sammy have gone through. A huge thank-you to these amazing presenters!
VIMY NEWS
Thank you to everyone who came out to our meeting on April 26th. Mr. Romanchuk came
out to talk about the trip and wanted to address any parent concern in light of international
events. All chaperones, parents and students will be emailed a survey regarding the trip. Student surveys will be sent to their gshare accounts. Please fill out this survey.
-Fundraising is complete for this year. We may choose to do one more fundraiser in the fall.
Fundraising money will be taken off of the October payment. Families will be notified with
regards to how much money their child has raised.

Depuis 13 ans, l’équipe d’Oniva! part à la rencontre de jeunes francophones du pays. De Cornwall à Whistler
en passant par St-Boniface et St-Albert, nos équipes sillonnent le territoire, de village en village et de ville en
ville, pour partager l’expérience Oniva!
Cette année, c’est aux jeunes de nous faire découvrir leur coin de pays !
Du 1er au 31 mars, les jeunes de 5 à 13 ans sont invités à nous soumettre une photo d’eux dans un endroit
qu’ils aiment et à nous expliquer en moins de 100 mots ce que ce lieu représente pour eux. On vous invite à
poser l'affiche en pièce jointe dans votre école.
