Neighbours Has a New Defibrillator!!!
Have you heard the exciting news?
Neighbours
now has an Automated External Defibrillator for use in a cardiac
emergency situation! All staff members have received training on
how to operate the defibrillator and 3 out of 4 staff members are
CPR certified, so in a cardiac emergency we will be ready!

The AED is a machine designed to reset the heart beat after
someone has gone into cardiac arrest.
In an emergency situation, an AED
combined with CPR can increase the
likelihood of survival to 75% or more.

For every one minute delay from
defibrillation, the survival rate of a cardiac
victim can decrease by 7-10%

Look for the signs and the AED
in our office!

Looking for something to do in June?
Did you know that for the weekend of June 5th to 7th you are not
required to have a fishing license to go fishing in Quebec? The
Government of Québec has officially designated that weekend as
Fête de la Pêche, so grab your rod and reel, a few of your friends
and family and head out that weekend to enjoy the wonderful
sport of fishing. Just remember to tell the story of the one that got
away!

Now that the weather is a little nicer, you might
be wondering what there is to do in the great
outdoors. The city of Rouyn-Noranda and
surrounding area has a large variety of hiking
trails, ranging from beginner to expert levels,
and they are all within a maximum of 40 KM
radius of the city centre. Take a nice leisurely
walk or bike ride on the Lake Osisko Trail or for
the more adventurous: climb to the peak of
Mount Cheminis! Whatever your level of
expertise, there is trail waiting for you!
Trail maps and further information are available
at City Hall, as well as on the City of
Rouyn-Noranda website.

The Tradition of the Maypole
The tradition of the Maypole is something that originated in the
Germanic countries of Europe. Though its original purpose is
unknown, it is believed that it was originally part of the Pagan
traditions in the early 16th century.
Today, the Maypole is erected in town centres across Europe
either on the first of May or on the evening before. It is often
part of a festival that takes place from the 30th of April to the
1st of May and many towns and cities keep the pole up year
round, only decorating it for the celebration.
The Maypole tradition usually begins with a procession or parade through the
village to a restaurant or central location, where the spectators then watch the
pole being raised, accompanied by what is usually a brass band. In the
evening, the pole is ceremoniously decorated by the men of the village with
decorations representing the trades that are in and around the village. The
tradition is one that has stood the test of time and continues to be celebration
every year in Germany, Austria, and Swabia.

7 Interesting Daily Life Hacks
1.
When you are running, to avoid cramps, exhale every time your left foot hits
the ground.
2.
Half a banana serves as an excellent substitute for eggs
when baking cookies. As an added bonus, it also adds an extra
yummy flavour!
3.
To amplify the sound on an iPhone or iPod, put it in a bowl. The concave shape
acts as a mini speaker and makes the sound louder.
4.
OH NO! You burnt your tongue because you were too excited
to wait until your hot chocolate cooled! No fear, a spoonful of sugar
can help heal a burnt tongue!
5.
Struggling to hide a super obvious bruise? Try soaking a cotton ball in vinegar
and applying it to the bruise. The vinegar increases the blood flow,
which helps heal the bruise faster!
6.
If you ever go to the zoo, try wearing the same color as the
employees and the animals will be more likely to come close to you.
7.
If someone presses all of the buttons on an elevator, you can avoid stopping on
every floor by repressing the buttons and pushing them twice.

1.
Plan to plant your vegetables in a very sunny spot. Vegetables need at
least 6 hours of sunlight per day and sometimes they prefer 8.
2.
Find out if your soil is good for planting. A good fertilized soil should
have the right levels of calcium and pH and should be free of pests.
3.
Avoid planting near trees. Trees can steal important nutrients from the
vegetable plants and provide too much shade. Ideally, planting a
vegetable garden closer to your house will help
fend off small animals from eating your
vegetables.
4.
If your soil is bad, a raised garden made with non-pressure treated wood is best.
5.
Vegetables should get at least 1 inch of water per week. Avoid watering them at times of the
day with direct sunlight. Exposing them to water in direct sunlight can burn and damage the
leaves.
6.
Double check your frost dates!!! Don’t plant before the frost is guaranteed to be gone or your
plants will die!
HAPPY GARDENING!

Canada Post: Community Mailboxes
The Ville de Rouyn-Noranda would like to inform all citizens of Rouyn-Noranda that mailboxes will
be built but not everyone will be affected.
The Ville de Rouyn-Noranda would also like to inform citizens that they are not responsible for the
placement of community mailboxes. This is something being done by Canada Post, not by the town.
If you have any comments or concerns you must contact Canada Post.
