If you’ve recently experienced a
theater, fine art, music, dance or
education program at the Arvada
Center, you may have noticed our
emergence as the center point of
an exciting and growing series of
collaborations with other regional
arts and cultural organizations.
Although the Center has long been
known for “what” we do, today
we also are generating ever increasing interest for “whom”
we work with.

The richly appointed mansion was perfectly designed to
capture the very essence of a woman that had isolated herself
amongst her memories for decades. Truly, Mallgrave outdid
himself with this stunning set. Costumes were also beautifully
designed (Clare Henkel) and helped create the world of Norma
Desmond perfectly.
Photos: P. Switzer
- examiner.com
“Scenic designer Brian Mallgrave’s set is gorgeous, with a massive two-story
piece representing Desmond’s mansion, evoking a cluttered and gloomy sort
of languishing Hollywood glamour, much like that in the original film.”
- Kurt Brighton, The Denver Post
Theater at the Center
Rod A. Lansberry, artistic producer for
the Arvada Center, waited a long time
for the opportunity to direct the epic
Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, Sunset
Boulevard, based on the 1950 classic
black and white film of the same title.
Considered scandalous in its time, the
film cast a dark shadow on Hollywood
and exposed the exploited and ruthless
side of the movie industry. Lansberry’s
production, in collaboration with scenic
designer Brian Mallgrave and costume
designer Clare Henkel, fully captured
the beautiful and dramatic essence of a
fading movie starlet with elaborate and
eclectic designs.
Sunset Boulevard received a total of
10 award nominations from the Denver
Post’s 2010 Ovation Awards, the
Colorado Theatre Guild’s 2010 Henry
Awards, and the 2010 Marlowe Awards.

Children’s Theater
The Arvada Center also features award-winning children’s theater.
By delivering high energy, age appropriate, and curriculum-based
productions, the Arvada Center has established itself as the premier
producer of professional children’s theater along the Front Range.
In 2010, the Arvada Center presented the Emmy® Award-Winning
Saturday morning cartoon from the 1970s – Schoolhouse Rock Live!
This education-based story about a nervous teacher on his first day
of school rocked out with nearly 45,000 children and adults.

Accessibility
The goal of the Arvada Center’s Accessibility Program is to ensure that all adults and children
with disabilities have the opportunity to experience the arts by eliminating physical and
programmatic barriers. Our accessibility program serves over 4,000 children and adults with
disabilities each year.
Most notable, the Arvada Center provides a unique theater experience for children with
hearing impairments through our shadow-interpreted children’s theater performances. In
these performances, American Sign Language interpreters remain on stage to “shadow”
actors by using sign language to communicate the characters’ dialogues. The interpreters
also use facial expressions and body language to portray the actual characters, allowing
audiences to both see and “hear” the action on stage.

Hearts for
The Arts
The Arvada Center’s 2nd Annual Hearts for the
Arts fundraiser raised over $18,000 with the newly
designed ceramic heart ornament. These hearts were
designed and handcrafted, signed and numbered,
by our Artist-in-Residence, Megan Ratchford, in the
ceramics studio at the Arvada Center. Proceeds from
the Hearts for the Arts fundraiser directly benefited
the Arvada Center’s award-winning theater and
performing arts programs.

Summer at the Center
The Arvada Center’s strategic focus on strengthening
relationships with other arts and cultural organizations
generated more depth and diversity in its outdoor summer
programming, creating even more opportunities for expanding
audiences, optimizing resources, and increasing mission
impact. This successful cooperation among community arts
and cultural groups inspired the Arvada Center’s CenterFest,
an extensive cultural calendar of cross-disciplinary
pairings, concerts and performances with arts and cultural
organizations throughout the Denver metro area and Front
Range region.

Education
at the Center
Education In 2010, the Arvada Center offered nearly 900 classes with an amazing 62,170
individual arts experiences to approximately 8,500 children, adults and seniors from the Denver
metro and Front Range areas. Arvada Center staff, plus more than 120 professional artists, educators,
and instructors delivered hands-on educational classes, camps, and workshops in acting and
performing arts, ceramics, humanities, music, visual arts, and dance. The Arvada Center offers
classes for all ages, including programming through ArtStart, arts experiences for children ages one
through six, and Arts for Ageless Adults, a series of classes available for those 55+.
With an institutional focus on collaboration, the Arvada Center’s education division has aligned
with several organizations for its education, Arts Day and outreach activities. Some of the Center’s
community partnerships in education include collaborations with the following organizations: the
Renaissance Children’s Center, a program of the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless; Wayside Day
Services and The Gap, organizations for adult groups with disabilities; Friends Unlimited; the Havern
Center; Before/After School programs with area elementary schools; Drop-In Summer Camp Program
with the City of Thornton; Girl Scouts; Boy Scouts of America; YMCA; Colorado National Guard Family
Programs; and Commerce City Public Libraries.
13
Arts Day Recognized for its innovative and integrated approach to learning, the Arvada Center
reached 45,320 students and teachers with its school-based Arts Day programming in 2010. Thanks
to our community grants and foundation supporters, corporate partners, and generous individuals, the
Arvada Center is able to offer free and discounted tickets to Title I schools and students with disabilities.
Arvada Center Dance Academy & Theater Offered to students of all ages and abilities,
dance classes at the Arvada Center include ballet to modern dance, jazz to tap, and hip hop to yoga. The
Arvada Center Dance Theater is the performing side of the Arvada Center’s dance program, focused on
training to avoid injuries and developing confidence, discipline, responsibility and respect. These dedicated
students, ages 12-18, must audition annually in front of a panel of professional dancers and instructors
in order to earn a position in the company. In addition to numerous outreach performances, the Arvada
Center Dance Theater performs an annual concert and two full academy concerts in the spring. In 2010,
the Arvada Center Dance Academy program unveiled a new format, including an intensive, full-year
commitment from academy students. The new format not only enhances the training and experience for
its students, but also continues to maintain its competitive edge in the market.
Front Range Youth Orchestras The Arvada Center offers a variety of educational and
performance-based opportunities for young musicians in the Denver metro and Front Range
communities. The Arvada Center’s Front Range Youth Orchestra program, including the Front Range Youth
Symphony (FRYS), Concert Strings Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra, and Studio Jazz Ensemble, finished
another successful season with new partnerships and increased outreach efforts. In March 2010, the
FRYS and Chamber Orchestras collaborated with the Albuquerque Youth Symphony on a Spring Tour.
Later in the fall, the Chamber Orchestra performed with the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra. Although the
Youth Symphony is in the midst of a conductor search, the Concert Strings Orchestra – under the baton of
Danielle Johnson – has increased its enrollment by 20%.

Galleries at the Center
The Arvada Center’s gallery and museum exhibitions are an integral part of its innovative programming.
Showcasing contemporary and traditional paintings, photography, graphic arts, jewelry, fiber, ceramics,
glass, wood, textiles, and other folk and visual arts, the galleries inspire our patrons, enhance our
educational offerings, and provide an opportunity for creative partnerships. Most noteworthy, the Arvada
Center’s gallery and history exhibitions are free and open to the public seven days a week.
The Arvada Center’s expanded scope and delivery of its gallery operations include collaborations with
Colorado fine arts institutions and community organizations such as the Kirkland Museum of Fine and
Decorative Art, the Fort Collins Museum of Art, the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts
(NCECA), the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center, the Chicano Humanities
and Arts Council (CHAC), Jefferson County Public Schools, individual curators, and private gallery owners.
Arvada History Museum
The Arvada History Museum is home to the Haines log house, a humble pioneer dwelling from the Blunn
reservoir area in west Arvada. In 1978, a team from the Arvada Historical Society carefully removed the
nearly collapsing cabin, log by log. In 1981, the house was restored and rebuilt in its permanent resting
place inside the “heart” of the Arvada Center.
The museum holds approximately 2500 additional catalogued items, including farm equipment, tools,
business outfittings, furniture and household materials, decorative arts, clothing and personal effects,
books, documents and photographs. The Arvada History Museum tells a unique tale of Arvada’s distinct
heritage as a town platted in 1870 amidst a thriving agricultural region. Often incorporated into the
Center’s educational offereings, the museum offers a platform for exploring Arvada’s rich history.

“This is the Arvada Center’s first ever collaboration with the Kirkland Museum and will
be the largest display of their Colorado collection ever, thereby allowing enthusiasts the
opportunity to see the Kirkland’s vast collection in one location, at one time.”
A new exhibition at the Arvada Center for the Arts and

The Kirkland Museum of Fine and Decorative Arts in Denver partnered with the
Arvada Center to display a comprehensive survey of Colorado art from the museum’s
extensive collection. This exhibition, displayed in the Center’s Main and Upper Galleries,
traced the evolution of Colorado art from realism through impressionism, surrealsim,
referential abstraction, pure abstraction, historical drawings and prints, lithographs,
etchings, engravings, woodcuts, embossings and aquatints of Colorado.

Volunteers
With a full labor force of 318 volunteers, the Arvada Center’s
Volunteer Program provides essential resources for helping the
Arvada Center meet its operational needs. In 2010, volunteers
contributed over 25,000 hours. Volunteers also provided about
1,500 hours of assistance on special committees (Arts Council,
Performing Arts Committee, and Volunteer Council), and almost 1000
hours on special assignments (artist sales, backstage assistance,
and museum). Volunteers also willingly help with special events and
contributed almost 1400 hours to Art Market, Craft Fair, Hearts for the
Arts, and special events and receptions.

*This is not a comprehensive list.
If you’ve recently experienced a
theater, fine art, music, dance or
education program at the Arvada
Center, you may have noticed our
emergence as the center point of
an exciting and growing series of
collaborations with other regional
arts and cultural organizations.
Although the Center has long been
known for “what” we do, today
we also are generating ever increasing interest for “whom”
we work with.
2010 Annual Report
Contents:
In recent years, the Center has expanded its range of
programming and regional base of support through an
institutional philosophy driven by creative collaborations and
strategic alignments with cultural, civic, and commercial
organizations throughout the state. The Arvada Center’s
cooperative business approach has been demonstrated
throughout the entire organization, highlighting partnerships
in the Center’s theaters, galleries, educational division, and
outdoor summer programming.
Executive Director’s Letter
Through our multidisciplinary, innovative, and comprehensive
programming, the Arvada Center carves out a unique niche
in the Denver metro area. With an annual operating budget
of over $10 million, the Arvada Center is one of the largest
employers of creative people in the state of Colorado and
is recognized as one of the largest multidisciplinary arts
organizations in the country.
Music at the Center
With our continued commitment to artistic excellence
and through the spirit of collaboration, we look forward
to providing more quality and unique arts, educational
and cultural experiences. Thank you for your interest and
investment in making the Arvada Center the “center of it all!”
