Northup is a free man living in upstate New
York earning an honest living as a violinist. This
true story tell the tale of his abduction from
liberty and push into slavery. Deciding that the
best way for him to survive is to cooperate,
he suffers all the atrocities and challenges of a
slave. However, facing cruelty and unexpected
kindness, Solomon goes on a mission to stay
alive whilst sustaining his dignity. In the twelfth
year of his story, Solomon’s life changes when
he meets a Canadian abolitionist who rescues
and delivers him from slavery.

recovers, he determines to seek revenge on
those who tried to kill him. Posing as a rich man,
he sets of on his mission to hunt them down.
When they learn of his return, they send the
mob after him, but the mob isn’t the only one
after his head...

60 YEARS ON (U)
When Elizabeth came to the throne in 1952 her
ascension heralded a post-war era of golden
promise, but Britain moved slowly due to the
after effects of WWII and the early Cold War
years. Queen Elizabeth’s own life has been just
as turbulent with the death of mother, sister
and daughter-in-law. The Queen has remained
faultless in her public duties at home and abroad,
and is recognised as one of the world’s favourite
figureheads.

Bilbo Baggins, against his will, is being forced
on a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf kingdom
of Erebor from the fearful dragon, Smaug.
Approached by wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo
found himself entering the company of thirteen
dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin
Oakenshield. Their journey takes them into the
wild, swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deathly
Wargs, Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters, Sorcerers.
Although their goal is to the east, they must
first escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo
meets the creature, Gollum. The shrivelled,
hunchbacked human-like creature with big blue
eyes has the tenacity of a lion with stunning
intellegence and jarring personality changes.
Bilbo re-evaluates his journey in light of this
meeting. Stuck with no way out, and being left
alone with Gollum around an underground lake,
Bilbo learns a depth of courage that surprises
him greately. During their time together, Bilbo
also obtains Gollum’s “precious” ring that
holds a significance…a simple gold ring that is
connected to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways
unimaginable. A beautiful tale of fear, strength,
and courage, this movie is a brilliant prequel to
the Lord of The Rings trilogy.

This documentary follows two chameleons from
a small population of only 300 living by a lagoon
in Greece. We explore this beautiful Greek
location and one of the world’s most fascinating
species and point out the need for a more
responsible attitude, not only to the endangered
chameleons but to all the original inhabitants
of the beach so that their survival may be
prolonged.
The Informant! is a true story mixing themes from
A Beautiful Mind and The Insider, where real life
PhDs executed something extraordinary. Based
on Kurt Eichenwald’s 2000 book, The Informant!
is the tale of Mark Whitacre (played by Matt
Damon), an Ivy League PhD who was a rising
star at Archer Daniels Midland in the early 1990s.
The bipolar hero wound up blowing the whistle
on the company’s price fixing tactics and became
the highest-ranked executive to ever turn coat in
US history. Whitacre secretly gathered hundreds
of hours of video and audio tapes over several
years in what became one of the largest price
fixing cases in US history.

daughter, little Max, is enchanted with her –
at first. As time goes by, Kate begins to feel
that Esther is manipulative and possibly even
psychologically disturbed. But John refuses to
listen to his wife’s misgivings, and the wounds
in their marriage reopen. When Kate calls Sister
Abigail at the orphanage, the nun informs her
that Esther has a troubled and mysterious
history.

memoir. The movie quickly
gained popularity with its
stellar cast and impressive
cinematography. An

watch but true history of
the slavery era in the United
States, the movie brilliantly
captures the sentimentss
and emotion from the time.
With immaculate attention
to detail, the film garnered
many awards and was highly
acclaimed by critics.
The blockbuster hit movie
earned three Academy
Awards, including Best
Picture. It received a Golden
Globe Award for Best
Motion Picture – Drama
and also took home the
BAFTA Award for Best
Film. Chiwetel Ejiofor also
brought home the award
for Best Actor in his role as
Solomon Northup. Lupita
Nyong’O who played Patsey,
the young slave girl, was also
nominated for her role.
The wrtier for this
emotional film, John Ridley,
was residing in Amsterdam
where Anne Frank was a
national hero. When he read
the book, he knew that the
story needed to be heard
and so the screenplay was
born. Backed by Brad Pitt’s
production company, Plan
B Entertainment, and with a
budget of USD20million, the
film grossed high at the box
office with USD178,417,961.
The elegant music scores
were composed by Hans
Zimmer, the same composer
of the Pirates of the
Caribbean movies and more.
After the Oscar wins,
both Steve McQueen
(producer) and John Ridley
(screenplay writer) got into
a feud over the screenplay
credit. McQueen was denied
his share of the credit and
Ridley was vindicated by
Fox Searchlight, the film
distributor. This was later
denied by Ridley bringing to
an end the debate.

A CRIME THRILLER directed
by Taylor Hackford, the
film was initially set to be
his first film noir. With this
aim in mind, the film was
produced on a “mid-30s”
budget of USD$35million and
was conceived following the
death of Donald E. Westlake,
the author of the novel
Flashfire, on which the film is
based.
Premiering in Las Vegas,
Nevada in January 2013, the
film was released late due
to strong competition from
the box office. The movie
also received many mixed
reviews that seemed to lean
towards the negative due
to its poor adaptation to the
novel. On a more positive
note, others found actor
Jason Statham to be wellfitted for the role of Parker
and praised Jennifer Lopez
for the comedic relief she
provided. The film opened at
number five at the box office
and grossed slightly over
USD$7million - USD$2million
shy of predicted earnings.
As a result of a feudal
past between the author and
filmmakers, Westlake refused
the right for filmmakers to
use the character’s name,
stating that permission to
use the character’s names
would only be granted if
filmmakers adopted all the
novels. However, the rules
changed following the death
of Westlake. His wife sold the
rights to one Parker novel
and the right to use Parker’s
name under one condition.
The filmmakers had to adapt
more films in line with the
wishes of her late husband.
A former diver for the
British Olympic Team, Jason
Statham performed all of
Parker’s stunts in the film
by himself. In one scene, he
jumped out of the window
of a fast-moving vehicle
for his character’s escape
scene. Considered highly
dangerous, Hackford was
in nerves during the stunt
that had to be filmed five or
six times for completion. In
another scene, Statham had
to hang off the balcony of
a building. Due to the wires
he was wearing, Statham
was severely bruised from
the restriction the wires
provided.

IT’S NOT OFTEN THAT
A PROFESSIONAL
WRESTLER makes the
successful transition from
the ring to the silver screen,
many have tried, and very
few have succeeded in
pulling off serious roles
that aren’t an extension
of their craft - Hulk Hogan
in Rocky III or Macho Man
Randy Savage in Spiderman.
However there have been
success stories such as
Lenny Montana who played
Luca Brasi in the Godfather
and Roddy Piper as Nada in
They Live, and certainly we
can put Dwayne Johnson
aka “The Rock”, in this
category.
After a rocky start doing
fluff like Doom and Tooth
Fairy, Johnson has slowly
been handed more serious
roles to prove himself as a
serious actor, the latest of
which is the relatively low
budget thriller, Snitch.
Johnson stars as
John Matthews, a normal
everyday divorced and
remarried owner of a
construction company,
massive muscles as standard,
whose son is facing 10 years
in prison for accepting a
drug package for a shady
friend. Now we all know the
length American fathers will
to go for their kids, so it is
unsurprising that given the
chance to get his son off the
hook by the DEA if he lands
them someone higher the
drug food chain, he jumps at
the chance.
Using an ex-con from his
construction company (Jon
Bernthal) who has links to
the underworld, he manages
to gain their trust and offers
them full use of his fleet of
lorries as a way to smuggle
the drugs into and around
the country. However things
start getting even more
dangerous when he gets
the attention of a legendary
Mexican druglord, El Topo.
This premise is based
on fact and delivers a nice
break from the full on action,
ordinary man turns into
one-man-army scenario as
despite his size, Johnson is
up against some scarier guys
than him, which adds to the
immersion of the movie. It
raises some tough questions
about certain drug laws in
America but most of all is an
entertaining and gripping ride
from start to end. Wrestling
fans expecting camp action
maybe disappointed.
