TO CELEBR ATE BENEATH THE SEA!
INTERNATIONAL UNDERWATER FILM FESTIVAL

SPECIAL EVENTS
David Doubilet is the emcee that will guide us through the Underwater
Film Festival – presenting Emmy winner Jonathan Bird, Ernie Brooks of
the internationally renowned Brooks Institute of Photography, Jack &
Sue Drafahl, a deadly duo of digital demonstration and diving delights,
Jim & Pat Stayers who recently warmed-up to volcano diving, and Stan
Waterman who brought the Great White Shark into your living room in
“Blue Water, White Death” will have something new for us to look. You
won’t want to miss a moment of the Cayman Islands International Scuba
Diving Hall of Fame Party (included in your price of admission) immediately
following this festival of underwater film… unless you were clever enough
to come to the Awards Banquet before the Film Festival, then your price of
dinner included all three!
OUR 2009 LEGEND OF THE SEA : ZALE PARRY
Saturday, March 28th 8:00 p.m., Sheraton Meadowlands Hotel
A pioneer skin diver since the 1940s … in 1953 Zale tested underwater
equipment for Scientific Underwater Research Enterprises … in 1954, set
a woman’s depth record to 209 feet, and became the third female instructor
to graduate from the L.A. County UICC program, she then made her screen
debut in Kingdom of the Sea…which, in 1958, led to her being cast as
the heroine in Sea Hunt, without a screen test. Not just another pretty
face, Zale is an accomplished underwater photographer, and in 2000, she
published, with Al Tillman: Scuba America Vol. I, the Human History of
Sport Diving in America. Today Zale is busy working on Volume II.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THESE WONDERFUL
OPPORTUNITIES – beneath the sea!
Take the plunge and become a part of everything that is Beneath The Sea... even if you’re new to diving, don’t
have a buddy, and can’t get a date, at BTS you can change all that, learn more about the possibilities and
techniques of this sport, find trips, local dive boats, meet the divers who dive from them, find a buddy to share
it with, and … well, maybe the date part is up to you, but just take a look at what Beneath the Sea offers you...
SPECIAL EVENTS
discover diving – be a diver pool
March 27th - 29th, Meadowlands Expo Center, Exhibit Hall Hours
If you are not a diver, but are reading this because you are called by the oceans and the creatures in
them, you should BE A DIVER! Beneath the Sea can start you on your journey. If you are ten years of
age or older, you may come to the show for FREE, but you MUST put on your bathing suit and get into
our BE A DIVER® pool and Discover Diving with one of our certified dive instructors. Now that’s pretty
easy... and a bargain... and an opportunity to Discover Diving you should take advantage of now. Oh,
one thing, if YOU are ten or eleven years old you must bring a parent or guardian
to be in the water with you... if YOU are twelve to eighteen years old, you only need
to have a release signed by your parent or guardian, you may find that release at
http://www.BeneathTheSea.org/pdf/Be_A_Diver_Waiver.pdf. C’mon... it is time
for you to BE A DIVER. If you are already a diver, this is a wonderful opportunity for
you to bring someone you know to the show... someone you know who would love
being a diver, if only they could just try it once.
DIVERS ALERT NETWORK CONFERENCE
Friday, March 27th, Noon - 4:00 p.m., Holiday Inn

to specific expeditions in these difficult and demanding environments. Dr. Richard Vann (a BTS Diver
of the Year) demonstrates the nature of diving physiology as it applies to diving accidents and
incidents... Dr. Gozum applies the response of diving medicine... Bernie Chowdhury applies the concepts
to wreck diving... while Gene Melton talks on cave diving equipment, procedures, and organization
– or lack thereof. If you listen carefully, you will hear the rumble beneath these presentations that
rebreathers are replacing Open-Circuit scuba – and that opens another can-of –worms! (Fee includes
