THE NEWSLETTER OF SACRED HEART SCHOOL
VOLUME 22, ISSUE 1
“HOME TO THE SACRED HEART TROJANS”
WINTER 2016
2015 SHS FOUNDATION DISBURSEMENT
For the tenth straight year, the Sacred Heart School Foundation was able to give Sacred Heart School a generous disbursement. In August, Mrs. Dawn Shipp, Principal, High School
Department, Mrs. Virginia Morein, Principal, Elementary Department and Father Tom Voorhies, Pastor, were delighted to
accept this year’s gift. The disbursement in the amount $28,674
represents the earnings on total assets for the 2014 calendar year
as well as half the proceeds from the 2014 benefit banquet and
auction. SHS Foundation disbursement funds are to subsidize
projects that enhance, supplement, or surpass the basic curriculum of Sacred Heart School. This year, the gift will fully fund
an Elementary Library Wireless Student Computer Center. The
gift will also subsidize a Wireless Student Computer Center in
the High School.
Sacred Heart School was able to purchase 92 Chromebooks,
Chromebook OS Management Licenses, 3 Mobile Charging
Carts and 3 Color Laser Printers. Students will use the
Chromebooks for research and testing purposes. This generous
donation will continue to enhance our school’s curriculum
through the utilization and implementation of technology.
Sacred Heart School is very grateful for the generous disbursement and truly appreciates the generosity of everyone’s
donations and contributions to the Sacred Heart School Foundation.

SHS FOUNDATION
“WINTER WONDERLAND”
DANCE, BUFFET AND AUCTION
The 2016 event was a huge success! On behalf of Sacred Heart School Foundation, Sacred Heart School,
and the Development Office, we would like to thank
each and everyone of you that attended and purchased a
ticket. Your loyal support to Sacred Heart School and
this event is deeply appreciated. A special thank you to
our donors, sponsors and the many, many volunteers
and students that made it possible. Also, we would like
to thank our wonderful student servers who were so
helpful and gracious and to the Class of 1979 for spending the evening with us in support of Sacred Heart. We
greatly appreciate all of you!
Because of these wonderful supporters, the SHS
Foundation raised $26,000! This year’s event theme
was “W inter W onderland”. Guests were able to enjoy
dancing the night away to the live band, The Neighborhood Stars. The Sacred Heart School Foundation plays
a major role in the procurement of funds to ensure the
continued financial stability of Sacred Heart School. It
is designed as a safety net for the school. It is estimated
that parochial schools without such endowments are in
danger of closing their doors during tough economic
times. The proceeds from the SHS Foundation endowment fund are exclusively for Sacred Heart

On Friday, December 4, 2015, Sacred Heart High School
students enjoyed an inspirational presentation on vocations.
Thank you to Father Champagne for his inspirational talk to
our boys and The Sisters of Jesus Christ Crucified who spoke
to the girls. Our students were also able to go to confession in
the Mobile Confessional.

the Feast of St. Luke, patron saint of physicians and surgeons.
Physicians, nurses, pharmacists, medical and nursing students, and

SHS ELEMENTARY FLAGPOLE
Sacred Heart School would like to thank all of the volunteers who worked so hard to improve the
flagpole in front of the elementary school. We would like to thank Mr. Benny Fontenot and Mr.
Ricky Young from Century Link who moved the phone lines and wiring
for the school bell from the flagpole. We would also like to thank Mr.
David Manuel for welding and straightening the flagpole. We would
like to thank Mr. Joel Manuel for running the rope and painting the
flagpole. We especially thank the Ville Platte Fire Department for
use of their fire truck and ladder and Mr. Bob Manuel for the use of
his lift so that we were able to have this work done. Finally, we
appreciate the generous donation of our American flag from Mr.
Ricky Sonnier of Woodman of the World. Some of our retired
military members will meet with our 7th and 8th grade boys to teach
them proper care and folding of the flag. These boys will then be
assigned flag duty to raise and lower our flag daily. Thank you
again to all who made this endeavor possible. It is greatly
appreciated!
FALL FEST
All enjoyed a very fun and successful Fall Festival at the Elementary on Friday, October 16th. The
PTC and Fundraising Committee would like to thank all of the parent and grandparent volunteers
who donated food items and prizes. A special thank you to all of those volunteers who worked so
hard that day. Once again, we could not have done it without you. We would especially like to thank
all of our local businesses and parents who donated food items for the children and for the teacher/
volunteer BBQ. Kyle McFarlin with Cane's Chicken Fingers donated 20 gallons of lemonade and 20
gallons of tea. Ace Hardware donated popcorn for the event.
Lance Reed bar-b-qued for all of the teachers and volunteers,
which was greatly appreciated. His assistant for the day was Jeff
Veillon. We would also like to thank Paul and Tammy Fontenot
at Paul's Meat Market who generously donated a case of leg
quarters, as well as Pat Nero at Champagne's who donated sides
of potato salad and rice dressing. Finally, a thank you to Nick
Fontenot from Nick's on Main who loaned us his BBQ pit for the
day. We are forever grateful to all of these individuals that helped

of Ville Platte. It is a non-profit, charitable corporation that is not subject to parish or diocesan
control. The fund is monitored by a fifteen member board of directors, all members having a
history of service to Sacred Heart School.
The principle is never spent. It is invested to generate earnings to be disbursed to the school.
There are numerous ways that one can help the foundation grow. Donations are accepted
through: Year-End Appeal, memorial donations, honor an anniversary, birth, class reunion, or
graduation; donate an auction item, serve as a sponsor or purchase a ticket for the banquet; make
arrangements for a planned gift. All of your donations make a difference, no matter how large
or small. For more information on the SHS Foundation, please contact Kimberly Lejeune –
SHS Development Director.
A Special Thank You to Class of 1979
IBCA CLASS PROJECT
The IBCA class wrote personal business letters to their
favorite college or professional teams as part of their
lesson. Many received responses expressing their
gratitude for the letters and also memorabilia from their
respective teams. Pictured are a few of the students
holding their gifts. The items ranged from bumper stickers,
tattoos, and brochures, to megaphones, t-shirts, and dirt
from Finley Park. Some of the teams that responded were
the Minnesota Vikings, McNeese University, University of
Louisiana in Lafayette, the Boston Red Sox's, University
of Florida, and even the US Table Tennis team. The
experience proved to be not only educational, but also
enjoyable.

TROJAN DAY
SATURDAY, AUGUST 20, 2016
SACRED HEART HIGH SCHOOL GROUNDS
We are in need of your help to bring back our Trojan Fair! The Sacred Heart Fair was
started in 1971. With the generous support of the community, parents and grandparents,
this fair was an annual event until 1989. The Trojan Fair had devoted leaders that
organized the event, but the families of Sacred Heart are what made the fair successful and
kept it going for 18 years.
Trojan Family Day will be on Saturday, August 20, 2016, and will resemble some of our
past Trojan Fairs, minus a few things that are simply too costly for our first year. We hope
that monies made at our Trojan Family Day will help fund a ‘full blown’ 2017 TROJAN
FAIR with carnival rides and all!
There will be various games and prizes for all ages. Some of the activities include a
dunking booth, inflatable slide, face painting, bingo, class competition for grades 7-12, a
photo booth and a sweet shop. The National Guard has also agreed to donate an inflatable
obstacle course. A 1 mile fun run for children and adults will kick off the day. There will
be plenty of food including hot dogs, chili pies, jambalaya and other treats, ranging from
cotton candy, snowballs to popcorn.
If anyone is interested in helping out in any way, including joining planning committees,
donating prizes for bingo, sponsoring a booth, donating sweets for the sweet shop, or just
helping out that day, please contact Ashley LaFleur at [email protected]. Please
help us to make Trojan Family Day a success in order to bring back the Trojan Fair. How
wonderful would it be for our children to experience the Trojan Fair? Any
donation will be greatly appreciated.
