How often have we boasted of the cheap bargains that we negotiated while on holiday? Every piece of merchandise we bring home from abroad has a value of kind. The cuckoo clock that I brought back from the edge of Lake Lucerne brought with it the sweet memories of a winter holiday. Editor's note It is approximately more than three months since we saw the fireworks on the night of the New Year's eve. Three months of so many festivals, open houses, travelings and shoppings. Now, let us venture into more exciting events in the coming months and support the Visit Malaysia Year 2007. We at Member Relations Department have taken the initiative to show our support by increasing our list of Friends of Tanco – Accommodation. More resorts and hotels have been added, with special rates and discounts for our Valued Members to enjoy. Among the new listed ones are Juita Inn and Perdana Beach in Kelantan, Hotel Rosa Passadena, Smokehouse Hotel, Shahzan Inn and Jelai Highlands in Pahang as well as Nexus Resort Karambunai and Hotel Shangri-la in Sabah. Do spend a few minutes reading the article on Holiday Shopping as the article did raise my eyebrows. It is undeniably true that most of us like to shop when we go for our holiday, and me included. From a kilo of keropok ikan to a hand-painted silk scarf, we will definitely have the urge to “bring” something home with us. Kudos to Miss Loke for giving us her thought and view. As a token of appreciation to our Valued Members, we will be offering special privileges and rebates during this second quarter of 2007 and we will start with YOU as our loyal readers. Please flip on to our SPECIAL OFFERINGS and start sending the request now. Once again, we wish our Valued Members can share their experiences by writing to us. Let us treat Touche as our magazine. Kindly contact our editors at marketing@tancoresorts for further inquiries and information. Have a very good CUTI-CUTI MALAYSIA and show our supports towards Visit Malaysia Year 2007 The Editor 02 Message from the Editor Touche Magazine | 1st Quarter 2007 Forum COVER STORY Yang di-Pertuan Agong- Al-Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin (sources : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sultan_Mizan_Zainal_Abidin) Yang di-Pertuan Agong, a Malay title usually translated as "Supreme Head", "Supreme Ruler" or "Paramount Ruler", is the official title of the constitutional head of state of the federation of Malaysia. The position is often categorized as "King" in English, since from a Western political science perspective, Malaysia is a constitutional monarchy with a monarch as head of state. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong is one of the few elected monarchs in the world. Duli Yang Maha Mulia Al Wathiqu Billah, Al-Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Ibni Almarhum Al-Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah Al-Haj is the 17th sultan of the state of Terengganu, Malaysia, and the 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, or King of Malaysia. He is the constitutional head of state of Malaysia. He was born on January 22, 1962 at Istana Al-Muktafi in Kuala Terengganu, the capital of Terengganu. Receiving his early education at Sultan Sulaiman Primary School and later at Sultan Sulaiman Secondary School, Kuala Terengganu, he then went overseas to further his studies at the prestigious Geelong Grammar School in Geelong, Australia. In 1988, he finished his studies at U.S. International University-Europe (now known as Alliant International University) in London, obtaining his Bachelor of Arts Degree in International Relationships on 9 June 1988. He had participated in the military course PRE SMC (E) 33 at the Army School of Languages from 2 November 1982 to 31 May 1983, and then attended the military course SMC 33 at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England from 3 May 1983, finishing the course of Cadet Officer on 9 December 1983. He was commissioned to the rank of Honorary Lieutenant on 1 March 1984 and put in his service in the Royal Cavalry. He was appointed the Crown Prince of the State of Terengganu Darul Iman on 6 November 1979, and much later, the Acting Sultan of Terengganu from 20 October to 8 November 1990. On 15 September 1981, he was appointed as Assistant Land Levy Collector, working for a period of about a year at the District Land Office in Kuala Terengganu, prior to his departure overseas to attend the military course in England. His next appointment on 11 July 1988 was as State Administrative Officer at the State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN) in Wisma Darul Iman, Kuala Terengganu. Besides working for UPEN, he was also handling the job of Assistant District Land Officer at the Kuala Terengganu District Land Office. He was President of the Council for Islam and Malay Culture of Terengganu from 1 June 1991 till December 1995. Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin became the youngest Malay ruler when he acceded to the Terengganu throne at the age of 36 in 1998. He was crowned the Sultan of Terengganu on 15 May 1998. He was the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong from 26 April 1999 till he was elected Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Yang di-Pertuan Agong On 3 November 2006, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin was elected by the Conference of Rulers to succeed Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Syed Putra Jamalullail (Raja of Perlis) to become the 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia with his term starting December 13, 2006 for a five year term following a rotation system practised by the Rulers. The five-year rotational constitutional monarchy practised in Malaysia is one of its kind in the world. Sultan Mizan, 44, is the second youngest Yang di-Pertuan Agong after Tuanku Syed Putra Almarhum Syed Hassan Jamalullail of Perlis who took office as King on Jan 4, 1961, at the age of 41. 03 Touche Magazine | 1st Quarter 2007 Forum BODY SCIENCE Medical Weight Management Weight Management, Nutrition & Myofascial Therapy For Members Of Tanco Resorts Berhad We thank you for the opportunity to present to you our weight management, nutrition & myofascial therapy services which we would be most happy to extend to your members, especially so as your emphasis on membership benefits has been shifted, as you have explained, from a holiday club to and everyday club. Indeed, weight management, nutrition and muscular aches and pain are everyday issues affecting a large part of the general population, as elaborated below: Weight Management & Nutrition In the early 1900s people primarily died of infectious diseases. The leading causes of death back then were pneumonia, tuberculosis, diphtheria, and influenza. Thanks to the discovery of antibiotics and advances made in their development during the 2nd half of this century, deaths due to infectious diseases declined dramatically. Nowadays we find people primarily suffering and dying from chronic degenerative diseases. These health conditions are so common that the layman is familiar with most of these medical terms like coronary artery disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, macular degeneration, cataracts, Alzheimer’s dementia, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Unlike infectious diseases, which could be aggressively treated with antibiotics, chronic degenerative diseases are linked to metabolic disorders, lifestyle, nutrition, immunity and environment factors. Obesity is the main metabolic disorder. It afflicts 1.7 billion people worldwide. Roughly 1 in 4 persons in the world need to lose weight. Obesity is linked to major killers; diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke & cancer. 55% of deaths in developed countries are linked to people being fat. The following are medical facts established by the International Obesity Task Force: · Obesity can triple the risk of heart disease, which accounts for 1/3 of all deaths worldwide. Kills 17 million a year. · Type 2 diabetes is linked directly to obesity. Afflicts 45 million people worldwide. · Obesity is known to increase the risks of some cancers. Kills 6 million a year. In Malaysia, like most developing or newly developed nations, obesity is an increasing problem, afflicting a large segment of the population. The general health risk of obesity is very frightening: 04 Obesity Will Greatly Increased Obesity Will Moderately Increased + Diabetes Mellitus + Gall Bladder Disease + Hyperlipidaemia + Insulin Resistance + Breathlessness + Sleep Apnoea + Coronary Heart Disease + Hypertension + Osteoarthritis (Knee) + Hyperuricaemia & Gout Obesity Will Slightly Increased + Cancers (Breast, Colon Endometrial Cancers) + Reproductive Hormone Abnormalities + Polycystic Ovary Syndrome + Impaired Fertility + Foetal Defects + Low Back Pain + Increased Anaesthetic Risk Touche Magazine | 1st Quarter 2007 BODY SCIENCE Forum con’t On the other hand, the benefits of weight loss are widely publicized and covered in various forms by the media and governmental public education campaigns. Hence, offering a weight management solution to your members should be very well received. General Benefits Of Weight Loss A 10 Kg Weight Loss Will Result In: 10% Fall In Systolic Blood Pressure 10% Fall In Total Cholesterol 15% Fall In LDL (Bad) Cholesterol 20% Fall In Diastolic Blood Pressure 20% Fall In Total Mortality 30% Fall In Triglycerides (Linked To Heart Disease) 30% Fall In Diabetes Related Deaths 40% Fall In Cancer Related Deaths 50% Fall In Fasting Blood Sugar (Linked To Diabetes) 8% Rise In HDL (Good) Cholesterol Nutrition is the Only treatment option in many autoimmune diseases. Standard medical treatment using drugs (pharmacotherapy) are only symptomatic treatments for many recurring diseases like sinus, eczema, arthritis, asthma, colds & flus, migraine, etc. In many of these conditions, the disease could be better controlled or even cured with proper nutrition. With rising hospitalization cost, traumatic hospital procedures and expensive downtimes, people are more convinced that prevention is better than cure. This shift in mentality has generated a lot of interest to consume nutritional supplements amongst an increasing number of discerning consumers. Myofascial Therapy Myofascial therapy refers to treatment of the muscle and the tissue (fascia) that covers it. The treatment method uses special remedial techniques without the use of pain relief (masking) medications. The treatment aims to relieve the pain caused by muscle dysfunction and to improve the range of movement of the affected muscle. Any painful condition related to muscle, tendon or ligament using myofascial therapy. Almost every adult and even a good percentage of children have some form of muscle dysfunction problem. These are usually related to poor postural habits, poor ergonomics in seating or injuries. Often the problem is left untreated until pain is unbearable or range of movements become too restricted for normal functions. The following are common examples: Knee Pain This may range from having difficulty squatting to painful when walking up or down stairs. Most people tend to immediately conclude that it is a joint problem. In fact, in most cases, it is a referred pain from a muscle dysfunction in the thigh muscles which can be easily treated with myofascial therapy. Muscle Cramps Many people just live with recurring painful cramps. These can be easily treated with myofascial therapy. Backache This is the most common complaint amongst adults of all ages. Many are work related although injuries are not uncommon. In fact, a recent survey by the Singapore General Hospital in Singapore’s Central Business District uncover that about 40% of respondents has a backache problem! Whilst slipped disc is a possible caused, most cases are simply pain due to tightness of a back muscle called quadratus lumborum which could be easily treated with myofascial therapy. 05 Touche Magazine | 1st Quarter 2007 Forum BODY SCIENCE con’t Headaches Headaches or even its more severe form called migraine is so common that all of us know someone who is suffering from it. Many are resigned to living with it because medication or drugs will only produce short term relief. In fact, most headaches are caused by a tight upper back muscle called trapezius which could be loosen by remedial techniques and the headaches disappear. Shoulder Pain Most of us associate shoulder pain with work stress or too many hours on the computer. Again we live with the discomfort. Not necessary any more if the problem is like in most cases, caused by a strained or injured muscle over the scapula called infraspinatus, which can easily be treated using remedial techniques. Dizziness People tend to associate dizziness with serious internal ear disease or ‘vertigo’. Not in many cases. Many are simply due to a tight neck muscle which could be easily remedied with myofascial therapy. The above examples sets the scope for myofascial therapy as a service to your members, which we forecast would be hugely popular. These highlands, or hill stations, have traditionally been a retreat where one can rejuvenate the tired body and sooth the weary soul. During the days when Malaysia was a colony of the British Empire, such cool retreats were much sought after by the government officers and their families, to escape the burning heat on the lowlands and the stress experienced in the towns. There are many charming bungalow and rest-houses dating back to the colonial era in the highlands. These highlands include Cameron Highlands and Fraser's Hill. Today people still flock to these hill stations to escape for a cool retreat and relaxing holiday amid nature and fresh air. Better access has made the Cameron Highlands very popular, with its rolling hills, tea plantations, flower nurseries, strawberry and vegetable farms. Fraser's Hill is very popular with those wishing to play golf and bird watch. Although not actually a high station, the highest peak in Peninsula Malaysia, Gunung Tahan, 2187 meters, is located in Taman Negara, and provides a great challenge to those wishing to climb it. The recent addition to the list of hill stations is Genting Highlands. It is not only developed as a cool retreat but also as a casino and theme park, and is a host to international entertainment shows. And now Bukit Tinggi has also joined the ranks of popular hill resorts in Pahang. FRASER’S HILL Rising 1,500 meters above sea-level on the Titiwangsa mountain range of Peninsular Malaysia is Fraser's Hill. Named after a solitary Scottish pioneer, James Fraser, who set up a tin-ore trading post in the 1890s, it actually consists of seven hills. Fraser's Hill is truly an idyllic place for one to rest and to escape from not only the heat and humidity but also the hustle and bustle of city life. It is perhaps the prettiest of the Malaysian Hill resorts To get to Fraser's Hill from the Gap, one must go up a narrow, winding, one-way road for 8 km. Traffic up and down is controlled by a gate system with uphill traffic limited to odd hours, and downhill traffic to even hours. There are hotels, resorts and chalets available on the hill. Tudor cottages sit among brilliantly coloured gardens shaded by lofty pine trees. Fraser's Hill is popular with the locals and foreign tourists for its greenery, forest walks, fresh air and exotic flower gardens, not to mention the golfing facilities. It has many attractions within and around the area. There is a nature education centre where visitors can learn about the flora and fauna of the area. At times we walked away from with good bargains and really valuable merchandise. There are also those times when we discovered we were short changed in quality. This article examines some episodes of holiday bargains, what are we buying, why are we buying and at what price should those goods be bought. For most of us, the main purpose of going on a holiday, especially travelling abroad, is to take some time off from our hectic schedule to relax, to be really enlightened of our daily work. Since relaxation is on the mind, what is the extent of relaxation do we look for? Is making holiday purchases a form of relaxation? To answer this, I would like to examine the process of purchasing. Most of the time, items such as local handicraft attract our attention because those are items which we do not already have at home. Or, we already have these items but of different designs or make. Normally, these triggered the intended purchaser to examine the price labels and the bargaining process begins. In assisting to determine at what price should the item be purchased, one often asked the following questions: “Do I need it?” “How badly do I want it?” “What am I going to do with it when I bring it home?” And if the item is big, “Can I bring it home?” If we were with a tour group, the tourist guide often gave tips on the extent to which negotiations can go. Below are a reflections of some incidents that may prick some of our conscience the next time we look for a good bargain. 15 Touche Magazine | 1st Quarter 2007 e - Activities Holiday Shopping Con’t Every piece of merchandise we bring home from abroad has a value of kind. The cuckoo clock that I brought back from the edge of Lake Lucerne brought with it the sweet memories of a winter holiday. The pricing labels on all the display clocks were fixed and not negotiable. On top of them could be added sales tax and other types of local taxes. Before I paid for the clock I enquired about the packaging as such a piece of intricate instrument required delicate handling. Such an exquisite time piece, straight from the very place where they are famous for, value can be assigned to every component part of the clock, the intellectual property of the mechanism and the very fact that I bought it from timepiece’s very birthplace. Over and above all these, I was supporting a unique industry of this village. In the above incident, there was no bargaining involved. The seller took care of every aspect of how the product would be sent from its place of birth to the new destination. I asked myself, did I enjoyed the purchase? The answer was “yes”. I chose the goods that was within my budget. It was a thing of beauty that fitted snuggly into a little nook of my house. It had a story behind it for me to retell over and over again, and each time I tell that story, I felt a sense of satisfaction for having supported a unique industry of a village. Recently, I was at a beach town in Southern China where the oysters were reared commercially. Naturally, pearls were also in abundance. So were ornaments made from the shells of these oysters. Women tourists were attracted to these shop fronts like bees were to honey. In such a situation, all the questions I mentioned above became irrelevant. The only issue of dispute was the price, and I was sure every women has her way of deciding on the final price. 16 Touche Magazine | 1st Quarter 2007 e - Activities Holiday Shopping As for myself, my first question would be, “How much will a similar piece cost back home?” From which jeweler’s outlet? Mikimoto's? Tiffany’s? Poh Kong’s? Habib’s? East Malaysia outlets? More important was how much would it cost at my own regular jeweler? Next question to ask would be about the design and workmanship. Does the design suit my personality? Do I have other accessories and a dress to go with it? Such imperative questions of femininity are natural to a woman. Having answered all these questions and if I still want the item, I would proceed with a rough idea of the price that I was prepared to pay. So, how low should you go in bargaining for a discount? I have certain bits of over arching conscience on this, especially regarding handicrafts. First, the very act of purchasing the piece of handicraft is an act in support of women entrepreneurship. The bargain price should not go below costs of the materials and time involved in its making and the costs of packaging and transportation, and other incidental costs involved in bringing the product to market. The seller, too, has a rough idea of what price she should sell. The second principle is that my purchase must provide some kind of incentive for the maker of the handicraft not just to continue with her endeavour to produce those handicrafts, but also to continue to improve on them, so that she can build a better business out of her efforts. It would, therefore, ache my heart to see tourists counter-offering prices less than half the labeled price. What kind of enjoyment or relaxation do we derive from haggling so hard will the poor villagers and to see them grimacing with pain to let go of the product at less than the costs? Although the chances of meeting the seller again in the near future are almost negligible, however, from one woman to another, what pleasure would one woman derive from hurting another whom we only meet by chance along life’s journey? With a line of conscience like this, I hardly have the opportunity to relate stories of fantastic discounts on holiday purchases . Its origins are uncertain. Some see it as a celebration related to the turn of the seasons, while others believe it stems from the adoption of a new calendar. New Year's Day Moves Many of the ancient cultures such as Romans and Hindus and the medieval Europeans used to celebrate New Year's Day on sometime near the vernal equinox that could range from March 20th to April 5th. In the Julian calendar, April 1st was designated as the New Year's Day and was so celebrated till 1582, when Pope Gregory XIII ordered the adoption of the new Gregorian Calendar, which specified January 1st as the New Year's Day. However, due to slow communications and resistance of people to change their traditions, many people continued to celebrate New Year's Day as before on 1st of April. Scottish only adopted the new calendar in 1660, Germans, Danish and Norwegians in 1700 and English in 1752. Many French resisted the change and neolites dubbed them as fools and played pranks on them. They started sending them on 'fool's errands', sent them the fake invitations for parties and tricked them into believing something false. The victims were called 'Poisson d'Avril' or 'April Fish' as the naïve fish gets caught easily and children would often tag of a fish's picture on someone's back. Thus, April Fool's Day originated and was popularly celebrated in England and in the American colonies. It evolved and was caught on quickly throughout the world to trick each other and have fun. Even today, people play pranks on each other on this day in the memory of those tradition-obsessed 'fools'. Perhaps the best illustration of the April Fool's Pranks of the 19th century is the Thomas Nast's illustration, originally published in the April 2, 1864 issue of Harper's Weekly. It highlights the various pranks that were popularly played at the time with its caption as 'All Fool's Day'. Some of the pranks shown women visiting an older man wearing beards and moustaches, Civil War Soldiers tricking each other such as a soldier barring the view by holding his hand on in front of the binoculars of a friend and a sailor doing the same by holding his hat over the telescope of a friend. The other tricks include a young boy tying a string on the dress of a little girl while a schoolteacher is shown with the sign of 'Old Fool' on his back. Happy April Fool Day 18 Touche Magazine | 1st Quarter 2007 e - Activities April Fools' Day: Origin and History Con’t Traditions and Customs on April Fool's Day On 'All Fools' Day' or 'April Fools' Day', people play practical jokes and pranks on each other, crack jokes on the expense of victims and gift each other gag gifts and then when the victims are taken in by surprise, all the witnesses shout 'April Fool' at once. The innocent pranks such as prompting somebody that their shoelaces are undone or that they have something on their faces are quite common. Children love to use the opportunity to prank their classmates and even their schoolteachers At some places, one is only allowed to play jokes until 12 noon for the jokes played after that time are supposed to bring bad luck to the perpetrator. Similarly, the victim is advised to endure the tricks with a smile on their face, exhibiting tolerance or amusement or they may suffer bad luck. It is said that those fooled by a pretty girl can expect marriage or at least friendship with her. Men are advised not to marry on this day or their wives will rule them forever. Children born on 1st of April are considered lucky generally, except in gambling where they will fare badly. At some places, afternoon on 1st of April is called as 'Leggin'-down-day' and the people try to trip up any unsuspecting victim. British media, normally considered serious and sober, give in to the excitement and tomfoolery of the day and consider hoaxes on this day as a fair game. Read BBC hoaxes to know more about them. With Internet to assist them, playing pranks had become a lot easier, fun and far reaching. April Fool's Day is one of the funniest and most popular pastimes of the day.
