The Muslims celebrate the festival of Aidilfitri – popularly known as Hari Raya Puasa, or simply Hari Raya (Day of Celebration) in Malaysia – to mark the culmination of Ramadhan, the holy month of fasting and the Festival of Lights, the celebration of Deepavali (or Diwali) marks the triumph of good over evil, the victory of light over dark. As always referred to, this is the Quarter of Festivals where all the Celebrations come alive, starting with Deepavali in October and ends with Aidiladha in December. Not forgetting the New Year's Eve too, as we are fast approaching a new year of 2007. In our last issue, we have spoken about our promises to constructively making your membership worthwhile, and we intend to uphold that promises. The One Night Stay Policy which has taken effect on 1st May 2006 is one of our promises mentioned, and since then it has fast becoming a great policy for members to maximize their yearly entitlement. Furtherance to the Policy, we have expanded our online booking where all Tanco's local resorts (with exception of Corus Paradise, Port Dickson) are now live for members to reserve, 24 hours a-day, seven days a-week. Since we started this on 22nd May 2006, we have tremendously doubled our online bookings' request. There were 60 online reservation requests in April 2006 and in May 2006, the requests have increase to 101 and almost doubled to 188 requests in June 2006. As at 22nd September 2006, we have received a total of 119 online requests. With the current success, the Management has decided to extend such services to Direct Affiliated Resorts (DAR) too. We are in the midst of preparing a user-friendly online request for DAR and 1st October 2006 will be the official date to launch it. We truly hope that this new feature will enable members to do a hassle-free request to overseas as well as local affiliated resorts. As an appreciation to our valued members, Member Relations Department, particularly the Credit Control division, has initiated the Members' Nite 2006. Since the last Members' Nite which was featured in the last issue, we have organized another two more, one in July and the other one in September. Please flip over to page 14 for more details. This “get-together” between members and the Management will not stop here as there are more to come, especially formulated for you, our valued members. Our “One Tie Up Per Month” has added up a new resort – Hotel Seri Costa, Melaka, with a special corporate rate, exclusively for Tanco members. We are now in the Holy month of Ramadhan and we have brought you a Ramadhan Special. Do enjoy a night stay in our selected resorts during our promotion period and you will have your 10% points refunded. Please view www.etanco.net for further information. Please look out for more, as we still have another three months to go before we say goodbye to 2006. Touche Magazine | Page 2 The Editor Touche Magazine | 4th Quarter 2006 FORUM No Worries “Balik Kampung” (source : http://www.itchyhands.com/2005/10/29/balik-kampung) It’s ‘balik kampung’ time once again and many people across Malaysia are making the long trip back to their home towns. Here are some tips on having a no worries balik kampung. Secure your home: Before leaving, make sure your home is in good shape. This means to fix all broken locks, doors, windows and anything that may present an easy way to break into your home. Also, make sure that all your locks work. And if you have lost your key before, be sure to change all locks. Another thing to do is to cut the low branches on the trees outside your house because these branches provide would-be thieves a convenient way to climb over your fence into your compound. Don’t advertise your absence Please don’t, DON’T leave a note on your gate saying that you’ll be gone for the week for the postmen/delivery man. Instead, make sure to cancel all newspaper and other deliveries. A pile of old newspaper laying in front of a house is a sure sign that its occupants are away. Get help Get your neighbours to help watch your house while you are away. Ask them to water your plants and to remove the mail from the mailbox. If they’re willing, get them to help move some things in your compound around. Some people say not to trust your estate’s security guards because they may actually be the ones who notify the thieves that you’re not in. Sounds cynical to me, but better to be safe than sorry. Register for the Rakan Cop programme. Just SMS your details to their hotline and the local police will schedule patrols to your area and to check on your home. To register, send the following to 32728: POLISKL BK [your address] [period gone] You can find more info by visiting the Rakan Cop website or calling your local police station. Once you’ve secured your home, you can balik kampung worries free. Just make sure you don’t speed on the roads ya. Many people leave their lights on all day while they’re away but actually that is a bad idea. If someone is watching your home, lights on in the daytime is another sign that the occupants are away. Instead, use a timer for your lights so that they only come on at night. Another thing to do is to put a timer on your radio. Have it on in the daytime so that it appears that someone is home. Negeri Sembilan - Land of Quiet Grace (source:www.tourismmalaysia.gov.my/en/destinations/state_nsembilan.asp) Negeri Sembilan starts just 50 km south of Kuala Lumpur. Negeri Sembilan, which literally means nine states, is mainly rural with patches of urban development Once mostly agricultural, the state's economy now reflects a commercial balance between agriculture and industry with the development of several industrial parks in recent years. Negeri Sembilan is noted for its strong Minangkabau influences which are still evident in its kampung houses and official buildings. The Minangkabau people migrated across the Straits of Malacca from Sumatra centuries ago and their traditional houses are distinguished by sweeping roof peaks shaped like buffalo horns. Some examples of these influences can be seen in the State Mosque and the State Secretariat Building. The Minangkabau people of Negeri Sembilan still practise the matrilineal social system known as the "adat perpatih" making the state the only one to adhere to such social norms. The state has one of the most accessible beaches closest to the federal capital of Kuala Lumpur, known as Port Dickson, which is popular with weekenders. But beyond this famous beach, there is a little bit of everything for everyone to explore in this state, from the history buff to the nature lover. Touche Magazine | Page 11 Touche Magazine | 4th Quarter 2006 TRAVEL SHOWCASE GETTING TO NEGERI SEMBILAN Travelling to Negeri Sembilan is convenient as an excellent network of roads connect it to the rest of the country. The state is also located on the main railway grid Port Dickson By Road Seremban is situated about 60 km south of Kuala Lumpur on the North-South Expressway and 40 km from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang. Port Dickson has an almost continuous coastline stretching up to 18 km. Its sunny beaches, lined by tall palm trees and shady casuarinas, are washed by the gentle waves of the Straits of Malacca. Teluk Kemang and Blue Lagoon beaches are popular tourist destinations. Taxis, buses and car rental services are available from the airport to designated destinations in Negeri Sembilan There are regular air-conditioned bus services from the main Puduraya Bus Terminal in Kuala Lumpur to Seremban. Port Dickson is located along the coastal road about an hour's drive from Seremban. By Train The KTM Komuter operates daily train services from the KL Sentral Station in Kuala Lumpur to Seremban and the smaller towns of Nilai, Batang Benar, Labu and Tiroi at frequent intervals. Travelling time to Seremban is approximately one hour. Getting Around Those who prefer a self-drive experience will be rewarded with rustic scenes of villages, plantations and lush greenery. Bus services are available from the Terminal One Bus Station in Seremban to towns such as Kuala Pilah, Kuala Kelawang, Port Dickson, Nilai and Tampin. Port Dickson, fondly known as PD, is the pride of Negeri Sembilan. Teluk Kemang, situated on the 9th mile of the coastal road, is one of the longest stretches of beach in Port Dickson. Splash in the warm waters, or enjoy a myriad of watersports such as canoeing, parasailing, yachting and speedboat rides. The Port Dickson Fest and the International Port Dickson Ironman Triathlon are two exciting annual events held here. A string of five-star resorts, hotels and private bungalows fringe the Port Dickson coastline. Alternatively, camp by the beach for a pleasant night under the stars. Port Dickson holds the distinction of being the first place where competitive sailing was introduced in the country. The Admiral Marina and Leisure Club offer excellent and comprehensive facilities for yachters including moorage, full club services, brokerage and boat repairs. The Royal Port Dickson Yacht Club has extensive facilities for members and is able to accommodate Optimist and Laser crafts Dining out at local restaurants in Port Dickson is filled with delightful choices of delicious fresh seafood, exotic local dishes as well as Western fare. Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan Touche Magazine | Page 12 Touche Magazine | 4th Quarter 2006 TRAVEL SHOWCASE Travel Tips (source:http://www.us-passport-service-guide.com/international-travel-tips.html) Travel tips are a quick, easy way to get the inside scoop on specific travel destinations, learn to save money on travel services, discover good health and security practices, find timely travel deals and more. Learning from those who have been there will make your trip a more rewarding experience Clothing (www.travelite.org/clothing/womenswardrobe.html) Clothing is probably the toughest for anyone who wants to learn how to travelite. The two biggest tips to packing the right clothings, is to color coordinate, and to layer for a versatile look. Coodinating Colors Remember the old "Garanimals" children's clothing where you matched tags to match your outfits? Make sure every single item you take matches with each other. This means you'll probably have to stick with neutrals--tans, greys, blacks, with some white or accent colors thrown in. Layering You can change your look with just a tie, a scarf or vest. Chico's, a chain of US women's clothing stores, says you have a month's wardrobe with nine items of clothing, which they do with the following combination: 1. 2. 3. 4. Blazer Vest Short-sleeve shirt Long-sleeve shirt 5. Tank top 6. Long pants 7. Broomstick or full skirt 8. Shorts 9.Long-sleeve buttoned overshirt For men, it's even easier. Two pairs of pants, one pair of shorts (that work as swim trunks), two t-shirts, two long-sleeve overshirts, and one blazer should be enough for most trips. If you are traveling to warmer climates, you may want to take t-shirts made from quick-drying fabric, such as Coolmax. Wear these under your overshirts, and they act as undershirts so you don't have to wash your clothing as often. If you are attending a conference and you want to wear take more than one blazer, make sure your second blazer that you pack is wrinkle-resistant, such as the one sold through TravelSmith. You can also get a very versatile look by packing one pair of nice blue jeans, since your jeans will go with anything (hint: Have your jeans dry cleaned and pressed before your trip. They will last a long time between washings this way, since jeans take up a lot of room and are tough to dry). Undergarments Most people suggest that you pack four days' worth of undergarments with you. . Socks tend to be tough to dry--again, visit your neighborhood athletic shoe store and purchase socks made of Coolmax. These are more expensive, but drip dry very quickly. Many of them are double-layered, to discourage blisters as well. “Disposable” Cloting Save your holey socks and dingy underwear for your trip, and throw them away as you go! You'll have less washing to do. Same goes for old T-shirts, and even SHOES! If you are a regular jogger, save your older running shoes (which are still good for walking). You can throw them away at your trip and not have to carry them home (donate them at the city's Goodwill ). Also, if you're going on a shopping trip and you're planning on stocking up your wardrobe, take only those old clothes you plan to throw away. As you buy new clothing, you can wear them and have less to pack Touche Magazine | Page 13 Touche Magazine | 4th Quarter 2006 E-INTERACTIVE Members' Night JULY 2006 Date Time Venue : 05thJuly 2006 : 7.00 pm – 10.00 pm : Duta Pavilion, Duta Vista Executive Suites, Kuala Lumpur Touche Magazine | Page 14 Touche Magazine | 4th Quarter 2006 E-INTERACTIVE Members' Night September 2006 Date Time Venue : 20th September 2006 : 7.00 pm – 10.00 pm : St Andrews, Duta Vista Executive Suites, Kuala Lumpur Touche Magazine | Page 15 Touche Magazine | 4th Quarter 2006 Featured Articles The Interview With..... Encik Shamsul Affendi Bin Abd.Rahman, Front Office Supervisor of Duta Sand Beach Resort. Question 1: To begin with, perhaps you would like to share your background and experience in the hotel industry. I am 30 years old, first born in a family from 4 siblings. My first experience in hotel industry was part time steward and later on was offered as Waiter in F&B Section. I was F&B Captain before I was appointed as Front Office Assistant. Question 2: Between normal hotel guests and vacation club members, do you find any difference? I can differentiate between walk in and members in term of their interest or the reason why they were at our place. “Walk in” actually is a basic for any hospitality organization like us to capture public awareness in open markets about our presence and they are the one who influence others. Members are those who have invested their money in and in facts they are our core business for time sharing organization like us. Of course, as a return we have to fulfill them with the necessaries as per term and agreement. We have to attend to their priorities accordingly. Question 3: What do you think could be the biggest attraction for Duta Sands Beach Resort? Duta Sands Beach Resort Kuantan is located at the quiet fringe along the popular beach of east coast, Beach Caravan Experience: this resort unique offers adventurous caravan living on the beach and accommodation alternatives of rustic Chalets or Standard Hotel units. You will immediately feel at ease and peace as you step into this very homely and cosy yet exciting ambience this resort exudes. Question 4: As a person in charge of Duta Sands, what is the biggest challenge in maintaining the resorts, especially when it is always being compared with Duta Village? Actually the resort is small of 49 rooms, so do the resort management is not that complicated perhaps the biggest challenge is to be ahead with the competitors around; others are in sustaining business and finely imparting knowledge and services in enhancing human resource and capital development. Question 5: How would the challenge benefits Duta Sands in particular? This is the only resort in the East Coast that offered caravan facilities; its being a unique vacation for guests. Besides, it’s a good place for those who love country and silence mood. Touche Magazine | Page 16 Touche Magazine | 4th Quarter 2006 TRAVEL SHOWCASE Hari Raya Puasa (Sources: http://allmalaysia.info/msiaknow/festivals/rayapuasa.asp) Muslims celebrate the festival of Aidilfitri – popularly known as Hari Raya Puasa, or simply Hari Raya (Day of Celebration) in Malaysia – to mark the culmination of Ramadhan, the holy month of fasting. It is a joyous occasion for Muslims, as it signifies a personal triumph, a victory of self-restraint and abstinence, symbolising purification and renewal. Fasting during the month of Ramadhan is compulsory or wajib, whereby Muslims are required to abstain from satisfying their most basic needs and urges, daily, between sunrise and sunset. It is one of the five tenets of Islam; as is the paying of zakat (alms tax for the poor), which must be tithed by the end of Ramadhan. In Malaysia, the period of fasting ends when the new moon is sighted on the evening of the last day of Ramadhan. The actual sighting is conducted by state appointed religious officials at various vantage points (usually at hilltops) throughout the country. If the crescent is sighted, the following day is then declared the first day of Aidilfitri, which is also the beginning of the 10th month of the Muslim calendar Syawal. A Time to forgive and forget Before the Big Day Aidilfitri is celebrated for the whole month of Syawal, but in Malaysia, only the first two days are observed as public holidays. It is widely common however, to see Muslims taking the first week off from work. Urbanites make their annual pilgrimage to their hometowns (this is popularly referred to as balik kampung), to be with parents, relatives and old friends. Thus, cities like Kuala Lumpur get relatively quiet during the festive season of Aidilfitri. The joy of Hari Raya Puasa actually begins before the first day. A week or so before the big day, excitement mounts as the house is readied for the celebration with new furnishing and decorations The Muslim community ushers in the first day of Aidilfitri by congregating at mosques for morning prayers. Everyone is usually decked out in their traditional best to mark the special occasion. Men are usually dressed in Baju Melayu, while the Baju Kurung, the quintessential Malay attire for females, is the prefered choice for the fairer sex. Then it's usually breakfast at home with the family, followed by a visit to the cemetery where deceased loved ones are remembered; graves are cleaned and cleared of overgrowth, and prayers are offered to Allah. This is also a time to forgive and forget past quarrels. Asking for pardon is done in order of seniority. The younger members of a family approach their elders (parents, grandparents etc) to seek forgiveness, to salam (Muslim equivalent of a handshake), then kiss the hands of the older person as a sign of respect. The usual greeting (that is uttered with the salam) during Aidilfitri is “Selamat Hari Raya”, which means “Wishing you a joyous Hari Raya”. Of particular interest are the last 10 days of Ramadan, where many keep vigil for Lailatul Qadr (The Night of Decree), the night when the Quran was sent down. It is believed that angels descend and shower blessings on that particular night, so homes are brightly decorated with oil lamps or pelita. Mosques, as well as government and some commercial buildings, are also decorated and brightly lit to mark the auspicious day. The most predominant colour seen in decorations during this season is green which is commonly associated with Islamic items. It is often combined with yellow or gold. As for motifs, by far the most frequently used symbol is that of the ketupat (rice cakes wrapped in coconut leaves); it is invariably used on Hari Raya greeting cards, hanging decorative items, and as a promotional image for the season. The ketupat is traditional Hari Raya fare and is often served with beef rendang (beef cooked with spices and coconut milk) and/or satay (grilled meat on a skewer). Other festive delicacies include lemang (glutinous rice cooked in bamboo tubes), serunding (dessicated coconut fried with chilli) and curry chicken. Touche Magazine | Page 17 Touche Magazine | 4th Quarter 2006 TRAVEL SHOWCASE Deepavali (Sources: http://allmalaysia.info/msiaknow/festivals/deepavali.asp) Commonly known as the Festival of Lights, the celebration of Deepavali (or Diwali) marks the triumph of good over evil, the victory of light over dark. Gazetted by the Government as a one-day public holiday, it is celebrated here in Malaysia by the Hindu community - mainly consisting those of Indian ethnic origin - during the seventh month of the Hindu lunar calendar, which usually falls in either October or November. And it is not called the Festival of Lights for nothing, for it is celebrated with a joyful vivacity, with bright lights and even brighter smiles, as though to underline the traditional meaning and message behind it. Even the word "Deepavali" is etymologically derived from the Sanskrit word that literally means "row of lights". Spring cleaning Let there be Light In anticipation of the celebration, homes as well as their surrounding areas are cleaned from top to bottom; decorative designs such as the kolam are drawn or placed on floors and walls; and the glow of lights, whether emitted from the traditional vilakku (oil lamps fashioned out of clay) or colourful electric bulbs, brighten up the abode of both rich and poor, signalling the coming festivities. Deepavali owes its origins to the epic stories narrated in the Hindu religious scriptures. Perhaps the most popular origin story is recounted in the Ramayana in which Lord Rama reunites with his wife Sita following a 14-year exile, and after having killed the demon king Ravana. Temples are similarly spruced up with flowers and offerings of fruits and coconut milk from devotees, becoming more abundant and pronounced as the big day draws closer. The spring cleaning and decorating are significant for they not only symbolise renewal but also prepare for the welcoming of Devi Lakshmi, the goddess of Wealth and Prosperity, who is believed to visit homes and temples on the day. It is said she emerged from the churning ocean only days after the new moon of Deepavali. Besides the cleaning of homes and temples, Hindus also prepare themselves by cleansing their bodies and minds. Many among the devout fast, or observe a strict vegetarian diet, and spend hours during the preceding weeks in prayer and meditation. Celebrating goodness The eve is usually spent making last-minute preparations for the next day. This is also the time when past quarrels are forgotten, and forgiveness is extended and granted. On Deepavali morning, many Hindu devotees awaken before sunrise for the ritual oil bath. For some it is a symbolic affair (to signify purity) while others take full oil baths to remove impurities externally, as well as tone the muscles and nerves to receive positive energies. Then it's straight to the temples where prayers are held in accordance with the ceremonial rites. The rest of the day is taken up by receiving guests, as is customary here in Malaysia. Most devout Hindus tend to be vegetarian, but that doesn't change the fact that Deepavali is the day to savour the many delicious Indian delicacies such as sweetmeats, rice puddings and the ever-popular murukku. Touche Magazine | Page 18 In the epic tale, the denizens of the kingdom of Ayodhya celebrated the prince's triumphant return to his homeland and later, his ascension to the throne, by lighting up their homes and the streets with earthen oil lamps. This happened on the night of the new moon and is commemorated hence, as the celebration of Deepavali. However, the story of Lord Rama's victory over Ravana is only one out of many that is said to have given rise to this annual celebration. One other popular tale remembered during the occasion is that of the battle between Lord Krishna and the evil asura (demon) Narakasura. Krishna emerged victorious after a long and drawn-out struggle, and his victory was celebrated with the lighting of lamps. Yet others believe that Deepavali marks the day when the prideful and evil Mahishasura was vanquished at the hands of the goddess Kali. Variations notwithstanding, these stories share a common thread; that of the removal of evil, to be replaced by that which is good. This sense of renewal is reflected in the way Hindus prepare themselves for Deepavali.
