From the Pastor’s Desk
Practice makes perfect. Oh, how I despised those words when, as I was growing up, they were used as a prompt
to get me to prepare for my piano lessons, and flute lessons, and bassoon lessons and baton twirling lessons. Since
becoming a mom more than eighteen years ago, I’ve been known to use those same three words, practice makes
perfect, on my own sons—encouraging them over the years to practice their instruments, to shoot baskets in the
driveway hoop and to ride their bikes to the batting cage.
The truth is, practice makes perfect is not simply an old adage used by parents and teacher and coaches to annoy
young people. No, practice makes perfect is sound and practical advice because it’s a fact. According to Doug
LeMov, author of Practice Makes Perfect—and Not just for Jocks and Musicians, “Practice lets us execute a task
while using less and less active brain processing. It makes things become automatic… what drives mastery is
encoding success—performing an action the right way over and over again until it becomes ‘second nature.’”
Practice makes sense when you think about music and sports, speaking a foreign language or learning how to knit.
But did it ever occur to you that God calls us to do the same—to practice and train ourselves in that which is good
and right? As with any skill we learn, so we must practice our responses and actions to difficult situations and
relationships, wearing a groove into our hearts, encoding what God intends for us.
Below are five faith values that we can practice every day—at home, at school, at church, at work—wherever we
interact with other people:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Practice peaceful calm in the midst of turmoil.
Practice contentment among those who grumble.
Practice kindness, praising others instead of demeaning them.
Practice joy in a world that longs for it.
Practice love among all people—especially those whom we find it difficult to love.
Such practices aren’t a matter of ‘becoming a better person,’ but letting your relationship with God logically
impact what you do each and every day: how you handle negotiations, how you treat a difficult client or family
member, how you view your work, how you love others on your path, no matter their position or disposition. A
stressful encounter may be only a thinly disguised opportunity to practice one or more of the above faith values.
So, what is it that you practice over and over again? Selfishness? Criticism? Stubbornness? (Since I’m just getting
to know you, I would never presume that this is what you practice, I just know about our (my!) human nature…)
How about switching the things you practice to peace, contentment, kindness, joy and love?
Pray that God will help you to switch a habit of practicing the negative (which most of us are pretty good at) to
that of practicing the virtues listed above. (Actually, they’re some of the fruits of the Spirit, as listed in Galatians
5.) Replace the usual dirge with a new song. Practice a loving, grace-filled response to the circumstances in which
you find yourself each day. Practice that positive response over and over again, so that when you encounter times
of stress or difficult people, you’ll be so accustomed to responding in a God pleasing way, you won’t even have to
think about it. It will come naturally (or at least more naturally than it may now!)
May you so practice peace, contentment, kindness, joy and love that they become ‘second nature’ to you.
Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress. I Timothy 4:15

From the Council President…
It was with excitement and trepidation in equal measure this evening that I accepted the
council’s nomination to serve as council president for the coming year. Trepidation as I
venture into uncharted territory serving as best I can an institution that I care deeply about in a
role that is new to me. Excitement, as we open a new chapter in our church’s history, and for
the wonderful team we have on council to support me. We have a lot of work and discernment
ahead of us this coming year, I hope you will all grace us with your input as we enter into a
new visioning process. Together we will carry the banner of our faith into the future as we find
new and innovative ways to live out our faith in our community. Please keep the Living Hope
council in your thoughts and prayers over the next few months and please don’t hesitate to
reach out to me or any member of council with any questions or concerns you may have.
Yours in Christ,
Daniel Colwell

Summer has arrived and outdoor fun has begun! Here We Grow’s summer preschool begins
June 6th and the school age summer camp also on June 6th, continuing through August 26th.
During the summer months the teachers take every opportunity to enjoy God’s wonderful
creation. HWG-LH is blessed with many acres of field and forest to explore, as well as three
playground areas for each age group from toddler to preschooler to the school age children.
Not to mention the opportunities the children have to explore in our outdoor classroom. We
will have our annual Trike-A-Thon on Wednesday July 5th with a Red White and Blue parade
theme for the 4th of July. The week includes lessons in bike safety, we will raise money for the
local food pantry.
