Turning 15 means getting your driver’s permit.
At my house that is times two. My twin sons are
learning to drive... from me. Don’t laugh! On a
recent practice run their older brother started
playing the song, “Jesus Take the Wheel!”
Who or what is driving your most important
decisions? I know that too often fear or doubt
have driven mine, but when I turn my attention
to Christ, when I look to Him for answers the
roughest roads lead to a peace that is beyond my
understanding.
This month (ITALIC) Birmingham Christian
Family begins its 15th year of being a part of
our community. The decision to begin the magazine was to spread the Good News of Jesus

Be an Advocate:
Defend the Fatherless
Andrew Fuller had a great heart for the
Gospel, but it was his friend, William
Carey who was commissioned as a missionary to India while Fuller remained at
home. Carey compared the circumstances
to exploring a deep mine; he said, “Well, I
will go down if you will hold the rope.”
Fuller relentlessly held the rope by raising
funds, educating, writing letters, and
recruiting.
Annie Armstrong, a pioneer in uniting women in missions and the first
corresponding secretary for the
Women’s Missionary Union, believed
in the Gospel and God’s call to take it to the ends of the earth. She was a
tireless supporter of missions all over the world, and she wrote thousands of
letters each year calling for further involvement. Like Fuller, she prayed,
wrote, educated, and shared the Word of God from her position at home.
Fuller and Armstrong were passionate about God’s heart for the nations, and their
calling led them to impact the world by advocating. When defending the fatherless,
advocacy is also an integral part of caring for children and families. Advocacy edu-

cates about the needs of vulnerable children and shares God’s heart for them as well
as His calling on our lives to care.
Advocacy can take on different forms—from raising money to finding families for children. No matter what form it takes, advocating is an incredible
way to be a part of caring for vulnerable children. Look below for some
opportunities in which you can you use your gifts and skills to advocate for
children and families:
• Pray for orphans and vulnerable children by name.
• Use social media to advocate for children who need families. For information on using your blog or other social media accounts to share about
children available for adoption, contact [email protected].
• Share media posts of other advocates.
• Partner with Lifeline to provide orphan care around the world.
• Organize a group to participate in fundraisers such as (un)adopted’s Run
for One on Saturday, August 16th at Veteran’s Park. For details visit
runforone5K.org.
Not everyone is called to foster or adopt. Not everyone is able to give large
sums of money. But everyone can pray, and opportunities for advocacy
abound from a simple retweet on Twitter to a devoted blog. How can your
gifts and skills advocate for children in need?

(SEBC) is a private, four-year Christian college that seeks to prepare
students for work in various areas of Christian ministry and within
the private business sector including non-profit organizations. The
goal of SEBC is to produce graduates who are Biblically grounded,

Is Southeastern Bible College affiliated with a particular denomination? No, SEBC is denominationally unaffiliated. SEBC holds firm to

My wife and I were on our back porch recently watching our grandchildren play.
We couldn't stop pinching ourselves in awe of the blessings that the Lord has
poured out on us over the last forty years. Let me stop right there and clarify. It has
not always been a perfect run. To be totally transparent, I'm the source of most of
the imperfections our family has experienced. BUT I'm also proof that God can use
even the most imperfect person to do His work.
With all that being said, let me ask you a question, "Are you
holding back from being used by the Lord today because
you are focusing on your past mistakes and NOT focusing
on your future plans and what you were called to do?"
I have GREAT news! I believe that God does not consult
your past to determine your future. Just think – He has a
future plan for you and me to make a difference in someone's life. It's not our call to
choose who it is. We just need to be willing to be used by Him.
I have a good friend who has made some life mistakes and is suffering from those
poor decisions. He has been focusing so much on the past that he forgot that there
is a here and now that he must focus on if he is to get his life right and move forward. Don’t make the same mistake as my friend. Start today living the life that

“Freedom!” Many people remember this as the dying cry of Mel Gibson in
the famous movie “Braveheart.” When this word is spoken others may
think of Philadelphia, the Liberty Bell or Paul Revere. Other thoughts that
come to my mind are images of extremely courageous soldiers storming
beaches or making their way through treacherous jungles. Over the years,
many individuals have “laid it all on the line” so our nation could be what
it is today. For that I am very thankful.
I can remember standing in the room in Philadelphia where the 2nd
Continental Congress met to vote for independence. I was there with
Kingwood Christian School (KCS) students on a class trip. I was almost
overwhelmed with emotion as I stood there in the room where the
Declaration of Independence was debated and the historic decision was
made to adopt it on July 4, 1776.
Our challenge today in our land of freedom is to continue the fight. There
are forces at work to pull our nation back into a structure where our independence is limited. There are forces at work that would steer us away
from what men like Thomas Jefferson, John Hancock, Patrick Henry and
others stood for. Too often the youth of America do not receive enough
education about our nation’s foundation stones. The very groundwork
upon which we are established is one of true liberty. I pray that educators
on every level, parents, and everyone would take the time to remember
and share with others our founding principles. We live in a fast paced
world and too often we are moving, moving, moving but toward what? Let
us remember these founding fathers had a vision of a great nation that
would be recognized as FREE. Let us teach that today and tomorrow.
And please remember this: ultimate freedom is found in Christ Jesus. Beyond
our Declaration of Independence and our man made laws, true freedom is
found only in Him! At KCS and in churches across the Birmingham area, this
is taught, discussed and promoted. Please let me know if we can help you find

who have suffered a heart attack or stroke? If you become ill, how would you support yourself or your family?
You might think that you are adequately insured against disability because you have
coverage through your employer or
through government programs
such as Social Security. However,
many employers do not offer disability benefits, and government
programs may pay benefits only if
you meet a strict definition of disability. In addition, these benefits
may replace only a fraction of your
pre-disability income.
This is an important piece of your
overall financial plan. Make it a point to discuss and review your need for disability
insurance with your insurance agent or financial advisor the next time you are meeting with them.

Spann and Brenda Ladun were featured on the cover of one of the
very first Birmingham Christian
Family (BCF) magazines. As they
did then, they continue to share
their faith in Christ with the community personally and
professionally. Last month Spann received an Emmy
from the National Academy of Television Arts and
Sciences for Weather Anchor. Ladun, who has battled
breast cancer twice, recently published her third book,
An Inspiring Journey With Real-Life Stories of Hope. See
Best Books page 14.
2001 Croyle Family Traditions
John Croyle has encouraged parents every month with
a column in BCF since its beginning in 2000. In
August 2001, John and son Brodie appeared on the
cover. Brodie was preparing for his
first year of college football at The
University of Alabama where he
would become a star college quarter back and later land a career
playing in the NFL. Today the
Croyle family is celebrating 40 years
of caring for children at the Big
Oak Boys’ Ranch in Gadsden, the
Big Oak Girls’ Ranch in Springville
and Westbrook Christian School in
Rainbow City. “We have raised
nearly 2,000 children. Our first boy
that lived with us is about 58 years
old, and we’ve got about 160 grandchildren that we know of,” John
says. Brodie and his sister Reagan
are now taking the reigns of leadership at the Ranch. Reagan manages

ministry details and Brodie handles business and operations. Brodie says he and wife Kelli were living in
Tuscaloosa last year when he realized he wanted to
return to North Alabama. “For two months I prayed
about it; I felt the conviction that this is what God put
us on earth to do. My wife had just come down from
putting our little boy to bed and we were sitting down
to dinner when I said, ‘I really feel God calling us back
to the ranch.’ She broke down crying and said, ‘I’ve
been waiting for you to say that for five years,’” recalls
Brodie. “Every life has a ripple effect,” John says. “Every
day my wife Tee and I just pinch ourselves and enjoy
that God has worked in our daughter and our son’s life
for them to come in and fly the plane even better than
we are.” On Sept. 24, Big Oak Ranch will celebrate its
40th Anniversary and Appreciation Day. Four of the
first five boys who came to the Ranch will be in attendance with their families. “There are many who read
Christian Family magazine that have been supporting
us for years, and we encourage you to come see the
fruit of your investment in the lives of children,” John

2002Vonetta Flowers; Heart of Gold
When Birmingham’s Vonetta Flowers crossed the finish line in victory with her bobsled team at the 2002
Winter Olympic Games, she became the first African
American to win gold in Winter Games history and
she instantly gave credit to God. Having started her
athletic career as a 9-year-old track runner at
Jonesboro Elementary School in Bessemer, she told
BCF in May 2002 that she hoped life after Salt Lake
City would include children for her and husband
Johnny. A full time mom to three children—twins
Jaden and Jorden (12) and Jaxon (5), today she spends
many of her afternoons at football, baseball and soccer
fields in Jacksonville, Fla. The Flowers decided to move
the family to Florida so son Jorden, who was born
deaf, could receive the help he needs. “It is still difficult
as a parent to truly know what’s
the best course of action when
the condition he’s faced with is so
rare," says Flowers. "So when we
are faced with those questions
and are left wondering if we are
making the right decisions, we
pray and remind each other of
the passage Proverbs 3:5-6. ‘Trust
in the Lord with all thine heart;
and lean not unto thine own
understanding..."

2005 Bruno & Hallman: Classic
Start
Since Birmingham businessman Ronnie Bruno was
featured on the cover of BCF in 2001, he and business
partner Gene Hallman (BCF 2005) have taken the
sports event management business, Bruno Event
Team, from a single golf tournament (The Bruno’s
Memorial Classic) to the country's largest event management company dedicated exclusively to managing
sporting events. “It’s been a great partnership,” says
Hallman. “The sequence of events that took place, you
stand back and look at it in totality and you go, ‘Wow.’ I think it
was a career path of divine intervention.” Bruno adds, “It was
hard to imagine back then the
potential of the company. We
were just looking for event number two after event number one.”
Hallman and Bruno now
employ more than 60 teammates in 16 offices throughout
North America. So many of the
events we know and attend in
our community are made possible by the Bruno Event Team
including the Honda Indy

Regions Classic Golf
Tournament, SEC Baseball,
SEC/NCAA Gymnastics and
the Magic City Classic. Just after Hallman’s BCF

program. “It has been very challenging but extremely
rewarding,” says Hallman. “It’s a massive jigsaw puzzle… and I think we can take this model to other SEC
schools. It’s just a matter of having the time and
resources.” Outside of Alabama the company is busy
with events in 30 plus markets across the country and
abroad from the Cross Fit Games in Los Angeles to
LPGA Events in Canada. With the growth of the
company, the principles and values of its leaders
remain constant. “Our values as a company are
Christian as well as the principles we use to guide and
manage our business,” says
Hallman. With many of the
events they manage, the net
proceeds go back into the community which is particularly
important to Hallman and
Bruno. For example The

Creek has generated $750,000
every year for the last 4 years to
assist local charities. “It has
been very rewarding business,
very satisfying,” says Bruno. A
focus on community also continues in the personal life of

accepted the role of Chairman
of the St. Vincent’s Foundation

when interviewed in 2001 to now Director Emeritus
of the Foundation. Next month along with his cousin
Joe Bruno and other family members, Ronnie will be
among those celebrating the opening of the new
Bruno Cancer Center at St. Vincent’s Hospital
Birmingham.
2006 Mission Possible
Tony Cooper, Director of the Jimmie Hale Mission
has shared an “Encouraging Word” with BCF readers
since 2000 (column on page 20). In 2006, he and his
wife Dale, who works with him at the Mission, were
featured on the cover. Since then more than 1000 men
and women have been able to find employment
through the Mission’s Stewart Learning Centers located at each of the Mission’s shelters. “We have been
able to help individuals build a good foundation so
they are able to get a job and keep it.” Today the
Mission operates three shelters, six Mission Possible
Bargain Centers and most recently Discovery Clubs.
“With these afterschool Bible clubs in public elemen-
tary schools, we see 1400 kids
at 29 schools each week during
the school year – That addition is our preventive arm. So
we don’t see these children

into our shelters.” This year
marks 70 years since the
matriarch of the Mission, Jessie
Hale Downs (BCF May 05) began serving the homeless in our area as a 27 year old widow, expecting her

2008 Legacy of Healing
In connection with its 110th year of serving the community, St. Vincent’s Health System was featured on the
cover of BCF in 2008. The hospital began as a ministry
of the Daughters of Charity and continues as a ministry
today. On August 11 St. Vincent’s will open the new
Bruno Cancer Center. ”From the first hospital constructed in 1900 to every capital
expansion since, the generosity
of gifts both simple and significant have sustained our
mission,” explains Wayne

E NCOURAGING W ORD
3 Steps to Discovering God’s Will
All of us as Christ’s Followers want
to know and do God’s will. I’m convinced the only way to be effective
as a Christian is to be in the will of
God. How do we do that? I believe
God’s Word gives us three steps to
discovering His will; seeking, submitting and serving.
• SEEK means to search; request;
desire. One of the things mentioned
in II Chronicles 7:14 is that we seek
His (God’s) face. Psalms 63:1 says, “O
God, thou art my God; I shall seek
thee earnestly….” Psalms 119:2 says to
seek God with all your heart. Proverbs
8:17 tells us, “I love those who love
me; and those who diligently seek me
will find me.” And Matthew 6:33
instructs, “But seek first His kingdom
and His righteousness; and all these
things shall be added to you.”
• SUBMIT is to give over; surrender;
yield to power or authority of another.
In James 4:7-10 it mentions to submit

to God; draw near to God; and humble yourself. In order to discover God’s
will you must yield to God’s way. In
Matthew 16:24 Jesus says if we are
going to be His disciple, we must deny
ourselves and follow Him.
• SERVE means to render assistance; to
be of use; to help. A servant is willing
to put others needs before their own.
Matthew 4:10 says that we are to worship and serve God only. Matthew
6:24 agrees by saying that we can’t
serve two masters. We should only
serve God.

Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church (OLS) in Homewood has been blessed for
40 years with the husband and wife teaching team of Paul and Jan Bizjak. “What an
incredible witness to one’s faith, to dedicate 40 years to catechizing the youth of our
parish,” said Suzanne Corso, OLS Director of Religious Education. The Bizjaks have
taught several hundred students, primarily second graders, on Sunday mornings. It
was Jan’s idea as a way to keep active in the parish community. “Our faith is such a great blessing but it is meant to be
shared,” Jan said. “We wanted to share our love of the faith
and we felt that teaching children was

Tabbouleh Salad
Ingredients
½ cup bulgar wheat, grind #1
1 cup water
4 cups finely chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley,
stems removed
3 medium tomatoes, finely diced
4 medium whole green onions, chopped
½ medium yellow onion, finely chopped
¼ cup fresh mint, finely chopped
1 tablespoon dried mint
1 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
½ cup extra-virgin olive oil
½ teaspoon cayenne
In a medium bowl, rinse bulgar wheat in water;
pour off water and let bulgar sit at room temperature for 30 minutes. In a large bowl, combine
flat-leaf parsley, tomatoes, green onions, yellow

Add Greek yogurt, tahini paste, and extra virgin
olive oil and blend for 1 minute or until creamy
and well combined. Add mint leaves, and pulse
for 30 seconds or until you see little specks of
green mint throughout. Serve, or refrigerate for
up to 1 week. Yield 2 cups.
Traditional Hummus
Ingredients
1 15-ounce can chickpeas, rinsed and drained
3 cloves garlic, peeled
¼ cup fresh lemon juice
½ teaspoon salt
¼ cup plain Greek yogurt
½ cup tahini paste
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
3 fresh mint leaves
onion, fresh mint, and dried mint. Add bulgar,
salt, lemon juice, extra-virgin olive oil, and
cayenne, and mix well. Serve immediately, or
store in the refrigerator to enjoy for 1 or 2 days.
Yield 8 cups.

their Tire Engineer stores with a
high customer focus on providing really good customer service and operating in
integrity. Our mission is to give each and every customer the assurance that their vehicle is well
maintained, emphasizing integrity in every action.

family focus includes

on Sundays. “We have not

The company’s Express Oil Tire Engineer Super
Centers opened last year and combine a dedicated
quick oil change department, a dedicated service center
and high quality tires. “This is something that has not

of it,” says Brooks. Adding,

not new to us, we have
been doing it for 35 years,
but the tire offering is
what is new." As the company has grown, it
continues to find ways to
give back to the commu-
nity. Express Oil conducts an annual Change-A-Life
Campaign in which one month every year the company donates to Children’s Hospital’s cancer wing $1 from
every car serviced in all of its 200 plus locations.
Cancer research and treatment is particularly important to Brooks whose business partner Joe Watson died
from a brain tumor in 2009 and son, John David, was
diagnosed with Lymphoma last December. “Our family has been blessed. We have six children, and nine
grandchildren but we also have a son that is 31 entering the hospital for a stem cell transplant. That drives
you deeper,” says Brooks. “It reminds us that none of us
are exempt from the trials of this world. It just reemphasizes our need for Him and despite trials and
tribulations it forces you to come back to a place where
regardless of what we see in this world, the person of
who Jesus is, is absolutely the truth.”

Steps to Choosing the
Right Doctor for You

While looking for a “four-star” contractor or mechanic may work online,
the anonymity behind patient-submitted critiques of medical care can make
it unreliable for choosing the right doctor. Instead, says Dr. Jeff Gunnells of
Henderson & Walton Women’s Center, consider the following steps to finding the physician to meet your needs:
Poll your immediate contacts. When speaking with coworkers, neighbors
or friends from church ask about their direct experience under a physician’s
care, you are more likely to get advice that will carry some weight.
Call your area hospital. “Most hospitals are going to have a credentialing
process,” Gunnells says, “and that process is going to effectively weed out some
of those that shouldn’t be providing services.” If a physician has passed the multiple screenings and licensing to be accepted on staff at a major hospital, he or
she most likely has skills and bedside manner that can be trusted.
Contact the Medical Association of the State of Alabama. “The state
medical society can tell you if there’s been formal action taken against any
physician, if this person has had an excessive number of malpractice cases or
if the medical professional has had quality issues with their care,” Gunnells
says. The Association based in Montgomery exists to serve, lead and unite
physicians in promoting the highest quality of health care through advocacy,
information and education. They can be reached at 334-954-2500.
Ask the right questions. How easy is it to communicate with the physician,
both in person and by telephone? How many partners are involved in coverage
arrangements, and with which hospitals are they affiliated? And, Gunnells says, don’t
shy away from directly asking about the physician’s confidence in your area of need.
“If I was trying to find an orthopedist for my knee, for instance, their clinical confidence becomes an issue when you’re thinking about procedure related things. I
think it’s not inappropriate to ask about volumes of experience and years of experience in that sub-specialty.”
