PUBLISHER’S NOTE 15 Turning 15 means getting your driver’s permit. At my house that is times two. My twin sons are learning to drive... from me. Don’t laugh! On a recent practice run their older brother started playing the song, “Jesus Take the Wheel!” Who or what is driving your most important decisions? I know that too often fear or doubt have driven mine, but when I turn my attention to Christ, when I look to Him for answers the roughest roads lead to a peace that is beyond my understanding. This month (ITALIC) Birmingham Christian Family begins its 15th year of being a part of our community. The decision to begin the magazine was to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ and help businesses grow through advertising. By God’s grace and your support, we are still doing that today. God has taken the wheel and grown His magazine in ways I could not have imagined. I cannot thank you enough for your continued prayers and support in the coming years! — Laurie Stroud Founder, Christian Family Publications "mailto:[email protected]" [email protected] “Look to the Lord & His Strength, Seek His face always.” 1 Chronicles 16:11 Glen Iris Baptist SCHOOL STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE ◆ K4 thru 12th Grades ◆ Achievement average is two ◆ years above national norm ◆ 95% of graduates enter college ◆ Outstanding in Fine Arts gleniris.net 1130 10th Place South, Birmingham, AL 35205 Located a block from UAB complex Call to schedule a tour 205 323-1516 Love Lo ve G God. od. d Lo Love ve people. people l . Carey compared the circumstances to exploring a deep mine; he said, “Well, I will go down if you will hold the rope.” Fuller relentlessly held the rope by raising funds, educating, writing letters, and recruiting. Annie Armstrong, a pioneer in uniting women in missions and the first corresponding secretary for the Women’s Missionary Union, believed in the Gospel and God’s call to take it to the ends of the earth. She was a tireless supporter of missions all over the world, and she wrote thousands of letters each year calling for further involvement. Like Fuller, she prayed, wrote, educated, and shared the Word of God from her position at home. Fuller and Armstrong were passionate about God’s heart for the nations, and their calling led them to impact the world by advocating. When defending the fatherless, advocacy is also an integral part of caring for children and families. Advocacy can take on different forms—from raising money to finding families for children. No matter what form it takes, advocating is an incredible way to be a part of caring for vulnerable children. Look below for some opportunities in which you can you use your gifts and skills to advocate for children and families: • Pray for orphans and vulnerable children by name. • Use social media to advocate for children who need families. For information on using your blog or other social media accounts to share about children available for adoption, contact [email protected]. • Share media posts of other advocates. • Partner with Lifeline to provide orphan care around the world. • Organize a group to participate in fundraisers such as (un)adopted’s Run for One on Saturday, August 16th at Veteran’s Park. For details visit runforone5K.org. Not everyone is called to foster or adopt. Not everyone is able to give large sums of money. But everyone can pray, and opportunities for advocacy abound from a simple retweet on Twitter to a devoted blog. We couldn't stop pinching ourselves in awe of the blessings that the Lord has poured out on us over the last forty years. Let me stop right there and clarify. It has not always been a perfect run. To be totally transparent, I'm the source of most of the imperfections our family has experienced. BUT I'm also proof that God can use even the most imperfect person to do His work. With all that being said, let me ask you a question, "Are you holding back from being used by the Lord today because you are focusing on your past mistakes and NOT focusing on your future plans and what you were called to do?" I have GREAT news! I believe that God does not consult your past to determine your future. Just think – He has a future plan for you and me to make a difference in someone's life. It's not our call to choose who it is. We just need to be willing to be used by Him. I have a good friend who has made some life mistakes and is suffering from those poor decisions. He has been focusing so much on the past that he forgot that there is a here and now that he must focus on if he is to get his life right and move forward. Don’t make the same mistake as my friend. Start today living the life that God intended you to live. Be the person that God intended you to be. You will be surprised at the way God can use you if you turn your life over to Him. — John Croyle Executive Director, Big Oak Ranch, Author of Bringing Out the Winner in Your Child and The Two Minute Drill to Manhood. Other thoughts that come to my mind are images of extremely courageous soldiers storming beaches or making their way through treacherous jungles. Over the years, many individuals have “laid it all on the line” so our nation could be what it is today. For that I am very thankful. I can remember standing in the room in Philadelphia where the 2nd Continental Congress met to vote for independence. I was there with Kingwood Christian School (KCS) students on a class trip. I was almost overwhelmed with emotion as I stood there in the room where the Declaration of Independence was debated and the historic decision was made to adopt it on July 4, 1776. Our challenge today in our land of freedom is to continue the fight. There are forces at work to pull our nation back into a structure where our independence is limited. There are forces at work that would steer us away from what men like Thomas Jefferson, John Hancock, Patrick Henry and others stood for. Too often the youth of America do not receive enough education about our nation’s foundation stones. The very groundwork upon which we are established is one of true liberty. I pray that educators on every level, parents, and everyone would take the time to remember and share with others our founding principles. We live in a fast paced world and too often we are moving, moving, moving but toward what? Let us remember these founding fathers had a vision of a great nation that would be recognized as FREE. Let us teach that today and tomorrow. And please remember this: ultimate freedom is found in Christ Jesus. Beyond our Declaration of Independence and our man made laws, true freedom is found only in Him! At KCS and in churches across the Birmingham area, this is taught, discussed and promoted. Please let me know if we can help you find that true freedom. At KCS our staff is ready to pray with you or help in any way we can. Blessings to you and your family. —Pastor Benny Cunningham Education Pastor, Kingwood Christian School 1351 Royalty Dr, Alabaster, Ala. 663-3973, www.kingwoodchristianschool.com July 2014 11 M ONEY M ATTERS presented by: Vision Financial Group It Takes Vision to Prosper Do You Need Disability Income Insurance? People ordinarily buy property and casualty insurance to protect their possessions and life insurance to provide income for their survivors. However, many people don’t think about protecting their income with disability insurance. How well could you live if you weren’t able to work? Disability is an unpredictable event, and if you become disabled, your ability to make a living could be restricted. Although you may have enough money in the bank to meet your short-term needs, what would happen if you were unable to work for months or even years? Here are some important disability statistics to consider: • The Social Security Administration estimates that a 20-year-old worker has a 3 in 10 chance of becoming disabled before reaching retirement age • There is a 25 percent likelihood of incurring a disability by age 50, according to the 1985 Commissioner’s Individual Disability Table A (most recent data available) As these statistics show, your chances of being disabled are great. Of course, statistics can be misleading—you might never become disabled. Disability can be caused by illness as well as injury. How many people do you know who have suffered a heart attack or stroke? If you become ill, how would you support yourself or your family? You might think that you are adequately insured against disability because you have coverage through your employer or through government programs such as Social Security. However, many employers do not offer disability benefits, and government programs may pay benefits only if you meet a strict definition of disability. In addition, these benefits may replace only a fraction of your pre-disability income. This is an important piece of your overall financial plan. Make it a point to discuss and review your need for disability insurance with your insurance agent or financial advisor the next time you are meeting with them. — Bill Dowell Vision Financial Group 4504 Pine Tree Circle, 35243 205-970-4909, www.vision-financialgroup.com Prepared by Broadridge Investor Communication Solutions, Inc Bill Dowell is a Registered Representative of ProEquities, Inc., A Registered Broker-Dealer, Member FINRA & SIPC. He ungraciously informed me that he had serious problems with one of my best-selling authors. In fact, he wasn’t sure I should carry the books in my store. When I asked what his grievance was, his reply astounded me. “He’s too happy. All he ever does is try to encourage everyone.” I can only dream of such a compliment being extended toward myself. Encouragement is something we all need from time to time. A simple note, a pat on the back, a serendipitous sentence that speaks to our heart - these are moments which can breathe new life into our journey of faith. In Brenda Ladun anchors the her new book, Encouragement - An Inspiring nightly news on ABC 33/40. As a cancer survivor, she knows what it’s like to face tough times. Whether your problem is a raging storm or the exhausting grind of daily life, Ladun has words that can revive your faith in God’s power and care. She reminds us to race into the arms of Jesus, trust in God, and not give up when it gets tough and God seems silent. At the end of every chapter, Ladun includes a key Scripture designed to anchor the point of her text. One such verse, found at the end of chapter six, offers one of the most beautiful lines of literature you’ll ever encounter. Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Who among us hasn’t needed to hear those words of grace? If someone you love is in the midst of chaotic difficulty, perhaps Encouragement by Brenda Ladun can strengthen their trust in God, offer words of power and peace, be an agent of God’s grace. CELEBRATING Good News 2000 As Birmingham Christian Family begins its 15th Year of spreading Good News, we would like to share with you a sampling of some of the individuals we have had the privilege of interviewing and writing about and what they are doing with their lives today for God’s glory. 2000Anchored in Faith ABC 33/40 News Anchors James Spann and Brenda Ladun were featured on the cover of one of the very first Birmingham Christian Family (BCF) magazines. As they did then, they continue to share their faith in Christ with the community personally and professionally. In August 2001, John and son Brodie appeared on the cover. Brodie was preparing for his first year of college football at The University of Alabama where he would become a star college quarter back and later land a career playing in the NFL. Today the Croyle family is celebrating 40 years of caring for children at the Big Oak Boys’ Ranch in Gadsden, the Big Oak Girls’ Ranch in Springville and Westbrook Christian School in Rainbow City. “We have raised nearly 2,000 children. Our first boy that lived with us is about 58 years old, and we’ve got about 160 grandchildren that we know of,” John says. Brodie and his sister Reagan are now taking the reigns of leadership at the Ranch. Reagan manages 2001 16 Birmingham Christian Family 15 YEARS ministry details and Brodie handles business and operations. Brodie says he and wife Kelli were living in Tuscaloosa last year when he realized he wanted to return to North Alabama. “For two months I prayed about it; I felt the conviction that this is what God put us on earth to do. My wife had just come down from putting our little boy to bed and we were sitting down to dinner when I said, ‘I really feel God calling us back to the ranch.’ She broke down crying and said, ‘I’ve been waiting for you to say that for five years,’” recalls Brodie. “Every life has a ripple effect,” John says. “Every day my wife Tee and I just pinch ourselves and enjoy that God has worked in our daughter and our son’s life for them to come in and fly the plane even better than we are.” On Sept. 24, Big Oak Ranch will celebrate its 40th Anniversary and Appreciation Day. Four of the first five boys who came to the Ranch will be in attendance with their families. “There are many who read Christian Family magazine that have been supporting us for years, and we encourage you to come see the fruit of your investment in the lives of children,” John says. See John’s monthly column, Bringing Out the Winner in Your Child on page 12. 2002Vonetta Flowers; Heart of Gold When Birmingham’s Vonetta Flowers crossed the finish line in victory with her bobsled team at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, she became the first African American to win gold in Winter Games history and she instantly gave credit to God. Having started her athletic career as a 9-year-old track runner at Jonesboro Elementary School in Bessemer, she told BCF in May 2002 that she hoped life after Salt Lake City would include children for her and husband Johnny. A full time mom to three children—twins Jaden and Jorden (12) and Jaxon (5), today she spends many of her afternoons at football, baseball and soccer fields in Jacksonville, Fla. The Flowers decided to move the family to Florida so son Jorden, who was born deaf, could receive the help he needs. “It is still difficult as a parent to truly know what’s the best course of action when the condition he’s faced with is so rare," says Flowers. "So when we are faced with those questions and are left wondering if we are making the right decisions, we pray and remind each other of the passage Proverbs 3:5-6. ‘Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding..." 2002 2005 Bruno & Hallman: Classic Start Since Birmingham businessman Ronnie Bruno was featured on the cover of BCF in 2001, he and business partner Gene Hallman (BCF 2005) have taken the sports event management business, Bruno Event Team, from a single golf tournament (The Bruno’s Memorial Classic) to the country's largest event management company dedicated exclusively to managing sporting events. “It’s been a great partnership,” says Hallman. “The sequence of events that took place, you stand back and look at it in totality and you go, ‘Wow.’ I think it was a career path of divine intervention.” Bruno adds, “It was hard to imagine back then the potential of the company. We were just looking for event number two after event number one.” Hallman and Bruno now employ more than 60 teammates in 16 offices throughout North America. So many of the events we know and attend in our community are made possible by the Bruno Event Team including the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama, the Regions Classic Golf Tournament, SEC Baseball, SEC/NCAA Gymnastics and the Magic City Classic. Just after Hallman’s BCF interview in 2005, The Team added Spectator Gameday Operations for the Univ. of Ala. football 2001 2005 www.ChristianFamilyPublications.com program. “It has been very challenging but extremely rewarding,” says Hallman. “It’s a massive jigsaw puzzle… and I think we can take this model to other SEC schools. It’s just a matter of having the time and resources.” Outside of Alabama the company is busy with events in 30 plus markets across the country and abroad from the Cross Fit Games in Los Angeles to LPGA Events in Canada. With the growth of the company, the principles and values of its leaders remain constant. “Our values as a company are Christian as well as the principles we use to guide and manage our business,” says Hallman. With many of the events they manage, the net proceeds go back into the community which is particularly important to Hallman and Bruno. For example The Regions Tradition at Shoal Creek has generated $750,000 every year for the last 4 years to assist local charities. “It has been very rewarding business, very satisfying,” says Bruno. A focus on community also continues in the personal life of Ronnie Bruno, who had just accepted the role of Chairman of the St. Vincent’s Foundation 2006 2005 2007 when interviewed in 2001 to now Director Emeritus of the Foundation. Next month along with his cousin Joe Bruno and other family members, Ronnie will be among those celebrating the opening of the new Bruno Cancer Center at St. Vincent’s Hospital Birmingham. 2006 Mission Possible Tony Cooper, Director of the Jimmie Hale Mission has shared an “Encouraging Word” with BCF readers since 2000 (column on page 20). In 2006, he and his wife Dale, who works with him at the Mission, were featured on the cover. Since then more than 1000 men and women have been able to find employment through the Mission’s Stewart Learning Centers located at each of the Mission’s shelters. “We have been able to help individuals build a good foundation so they are able to get a job and keep it.” Today the Mission operates three shelters, six Mission Possible Bargain Centers and most recently Discovery Clubs. “With these afterschool Bible clubs in public elemen- tary schools, we see 1400 kids at 29 schools each week during the school year – That addition is our preventive arm. So we don’t see these children 10-15 years later walking into our shelters.” This year marks 70 years since the matriarch of the Mission, Jessie Hale Downs (BCF May 05) began serving the homeless in our area as a 27 year old widow, expecting her first child. The hospital began as a ministry of the Daughters of Charity and continues as a ministry today. On August 11 St. Vincent’s will open the new Bruno Cancer Center. ”From the first hospital constructed in 1900 to every capital expansion since, the generosity of gifts both simple and significant have sustained our mission,” explains Wayne Carmello-Harper, President & Chief Philanthropy Officer, St. Vincent’s Foundation. “The corporate community, area continued on page 22 2008 !"#$%&'()*+!$*,-.. + /01"+2$"34)5+6$&5+7819 Thank you for your confidence in the Primary, now I need your vote in the July 15th Republican Run-Off for House District 43 - please spread the word with all your church family and friends in North Shelby County! I’m convinced the only way to be effective as a Christian is to be in the will of God. How do we do that? I believe God’s Word gives us three steps to discovering His will; seeking, submitting and serving. • SEEK means to search; request; desire. One of the things mentioned in II Chronicles 7:14 is that we seek His (God’s) face. Psalms 63:1 says, “O God, thou art my God; I shall seek thee earnestly….” Psalms 119:2 says to seek God with all your heart. Proverbs 8:17 tells us, “I love those who love me; and those who diligently seek me will find me.” And Matthew 6:33 instructs, “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you.” • SUBMIT is to give over; surrender; yield to power or authority of another. In James 4:7-10 it mentions to submit 18 Birmingham Christian Family to God; draw near to God; and humble yourself. In order to discover God’s will you must yield to God’s way. In Matthew 16:24 Jesus says if we are going to be His disciple, we must deny ourselves and follow Him. • SERVE means to render assistance; to be of use; to help. A servant is willing to put others needs before their own. Matthew 4:10 says that we are to worship and serve God only. Matthew 6:24 agrees by saying that we can’t serve two masters. We should only serve God. Experienced Packing & Shipping You’ve Come to Expect And So Much More... It will get you in the mood for more fun. Everyone dreams of one day going to Hawaii: sunbathing on Waikiki Beach, driving up atop Diamond Head, visiting the Arizona Memorial, enjoying a full course Luau at one of the name brand outstanding five star resorts in Honolulu. But Hawaii is so much more than that. It is eight islands rich in history, culture, church and splendor. It is post card beautiful, and as an added touch, the Lord throws in brilliant colorful rainbows on a daily basis. If you have just one chance to go to Hawaii, let me share some ideas for a full experience. • Rent a car. Instead of taking advertised group tours, rent a car on each Island and see the sights at your own pace. Drive the white knuckle Hana Highway on Maui- six hundred hair pin turns, and fifty two one land bridges in a forty mile stretch of road around the island. On the Big Island, drive over to see lava flowing volcanoes right before your eyes. On Kauai, drive to as many of the Hollywood movie locations as you can to take selfies for family and friends. • Take a cruise. See the islands not just Honolulu. Norwegian Cruise Line offers a week long cruise of the Hawaiian Islands. Their ship, "The Pride of America," sails out of Honolulu every week and tours four of the eight islands that comprise Hawaii. It is over nine hundred feet long, twelve decks high, and carries over two thousand passengers. It is a virtual floating hotel. The ship will take you to every island with comfort and good food. • Splurge on a special memory experience. On Kauai Back, take a helicopter ride into the rain forest to see the waterfall used in the movie Jurassic Park. Take a catamaran sunset cruise along the famous Na Pali Coast. Since then Ricky Brook’s company has added 38 stores in addition to the company’s most recent acquisition of seven Tire Engineer Stores. “We felt like the culture and the core values [of Express Oil and Tire Engineers] aligned. Number one, the Johnston family has operated their Tire Engineer stores with a high customer focus on providing really good customer service and operating in integrity. Our mission is to give each and every customer the assurance that their vehicle is well maintained, emphasizing integrity in every action. Number two, they have a high emphasis on relationship with their employees and considering their business as quote a ‘family’ and we do as well.” The family focus includes being closed at night and on Sundays. “We have not only been blessed and successful with the product we have brought to the market place but we have also done it without sacrificing our high emphasis on family.” The acquisition has allowed the company to bring a first to the automotive maintenance business. The company’s Express Oil Tire Engineer Super Centers opened last year and combine a dedicated quick oil change department, a dedicated service center and high quality tires. “This is something that has not been done in the country so we are growing as a result of it,” says Brooks. Adding, "The full service model is not new to us, we have been doing it for 35 years, but the tire offering is what is new." As the company has grown, it continues to find ways to give back to the commu- nity. Express Oil conducts an annual Change-A-Life Campaign in which one month every year the company donates to Children’s Hospital’s cancer wing $1 from every car serviced in all of its 200 plus locations. Cancer research and treatment is particularly important to Brooks whose business partner Joe Watson died from a brain tumor in 2009 and son, John David, was diagnosed with Lymphoma last December. “Our family has been blessed. We have six children, and nine grandchildren but we also have a son that is 31 entering the hospital for a stem cell transplant. That drives you deeper,” says Brooks. “It reminds us that none of us are exempt from the trials of this world. It just reemphasizes our need for Him and despite trials and tribulations it forces you to come back to a place where regardless of what we see in this world, the person of who Jesus is, is absolutely the truth.” 2010 Faith Focused The Tide’s first-ever Heisman trophy winner, Mark Ingram told BCF in Oct. 2010 it was the example of his maternal greatgrandmother, grandmother and mother that nurtured him into a deep faith in God. Joining the New Orleans Saints in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft, the running back says prayer is central to every step he takes. "I pray in the morning. I pray in the evening. I pray before breakfast, lunch and dinner. Prayer has a lot to do with my life. It has a lot to do with my career. Everything is in His hands." In 2011, Ingram launched The Mark Ingram Foundation to help children with a parent in prison. Having had his father spend time in prison, Ingram wanted to reach out to children in similar situations. "It’s great to put joy in the lives of some kids who might be going through some tough times at home." 2010 2009 2011 22 Birmingham Christian Family 2011 Power of Prayer Zac Brown Band Drummer Chris Fryar shared with BCF in 2011 how the death of his father and the failure of his first marriage drove him to his knees. 2014 “I prayed a lot, and I firmly believe God gave me the guidance and strength I needed. He gave me a chance to do right,” explains the Gardendale native who is now on the band’s Great American Road Trip Tour which includes sharing with people in need. In April, the band auctioned off a signed Vintage 1966 Fender Coronado II Guitar to benefit Stuart House, a collaboration of agencies that investigates and provides medical care, forensic examinations, and counseling to children who are victims of sexual abuse. 2012 2013 Duck Dynasty’s Phil & Kay Robertson The matriarch and patriarch of the popular A&E television show Duck Dynasty both shared their testimonies with BCF in 2013. Last month Kay and her four daughters-in-law completed a tour promoting their new book The Women of Duck Commander, which shares stories that reveal the true values of the Robertson clan including Korie’s struggle with her parents’ disapproval of marrying young, Lisa’s commitment to creating a more stable and loving marriage with Al, and Kay’s challenges as a teenage mother. As for Miss Kay’s work in the kitchen, she will add dark roast and medium roast Duck Commander Coffee to the family’s line of cookbooks and kitchen supplies. 2013 Read complete articles of many more past cover stories from Birmingham Christian Family and other Christian Family magazines including Nashville Christian Family, Anniston/Gadsden Christian Family and Bay Area Christian Family at www.ChristianFamilyPublications.com. While looking for a “four-star” contractor or mechanic may work online, the anonymity behind patient-submitted critiques of medical care can make it unreliable for choosing the right doctor. Instead, says Dr. Jeff Gunnells of Henderson & Walton Women’s Center, consider the following steps to finding the physician to meet your needs: Poll your immediate contacts. When speaking with coworkers, neighbors or friends from church ask about their direct experience under a physician’s care, you are more likely to get advice that will carry some weight. Call your area hospital. “Most hospitals are going to have a credentialing process,” Gunnells says, “and that process is going to effectively weed out some of those that shouldn’t be providing services.” If a physician has passed the multiple screenings and licensing to be accepted on staff at a major hospital, he or she most likely has skills and bedside manner that can be trusted. Contact the Medical Association of the State of Alabama. “The state medical society can tell you if there’s been formal action taken against any physician, if this person has had an excessive number of malpractice cases or if the medical professional has had quality issues with their care,” Gunnells says. The Association based in Montgomery exists to serve, lead and unite physicians in promoting the highest quality of health care through advocacy, information and education. They can be reached at 334-954-2500. Ask the right questions. How easy is it to communicate with the physician, both in person and by telephone? How many partners are involved in coverage arrangements, and with which hospitals are they affiliated? And, Gunnells says, don’t shy away from directly asking about the physician’s confidence in your area of need. “If I was trying to find an orthopedist for my knee, for instance, their clinical confidence becomes an issue when you’re thinking about procedure related things. I think it’s not inappropriate to ask about volumes of experience and years of experience in that sub-specialty.” — Camille Platt Mark Calendars, Our next OB Roundtable will be July at 6 p.m. Join usYour Wednesday Wednesday, June 4 at 6:00pm for our inaugural OB10 Roundtable This. The 20th Annual Mark’s Outdoor Open was a great day of fun, fish and big winners. For the first time ever, the annual fishing tournament was held at Logan Martin Lake in Pell City and the support we received from the city as well as the rest of the community was amazing. A giant thank you to everyone who participated June 7 as well as our sponsors and volunteers that helped make this year’s tournament such a success. The annual event is one that people have grown to love and look forward to every year and this year was no exception. The tournament provided an opportunity for family and friends to spend time together in the great outdoors, helped restock and preserve the lake and most importantly created Golf 2014 memories and fish stories to be told for a lifetime. Mark’s Outdoors would like to congratulate the following people for their performance in this year’s tournament: 1st Place - Joey Nania & Kolby Tishler received First Place in the 20th Annual Mark’s Open Fishing Tournament. Summer time is fishing time so grab a buddy or take a child and go catch that wall hanger that you have been dreaming of. And be sure to swing by Mark’s Outdoors for all of your fishing needs, including reel service and maintenance. Neutralize: The colors potential buyers see when they enter your home should be neutral so that the buyers will not be distracted by someone else's style. They should see the walls of your home as a blank canvas on which to project their own preferences and style. But "neutral" doesn't necessarily mean white. Using subtle color can actually enhance the buyer's experience, so repaint walls that have strong colors with rich neutral hues. 1039 Stone House Update and Refresh: If your wallpaper has a distracting design or is outdated, remove it and add a fresh coat of paint for a more current, updated look. A low-sheen product will help reduce the imperfections on walls and ceilings. You can also use color to highlight the architectural details and features of your home. HC-45 Shaker Beige Maximize Your Space: Light, clean, organized spaces appear larger. So clean and declutter, and give your walls a fresh coat of paint in a light neutral color to bring the room to life and make it seem more expansive. To help expand your space visually: paint the moldings the same color as the wall, which gives an illusion of higher walls. HC-26 Monroe Bisque Refresh Outside Spaces: Be sure your front door and any fencing or mailbox posts are freshly painted. And because buyers love decks, porches, and patios, also make sure they're freshly painted or stained.
