They are surrounded by rich fishing grounds. There is such an abundance of natural resources that the inhabitants often refer to the sea cliffs and the ocean surrounding Vestmannaeyjar as a “food chest”. There is no doubt in my mind that visitors who come to Vestmannaeyjar will experience the magical and unique adventure that could only happen in a place like these islands located in the remote North Atlantic off the south coast of Iceland. Fuglalífið í nærmynd og ef heppnin er með má sjá hvali leika listir sínar. Komdu við á Skanssvæðinu, frábæru svæði við innsiglinguna þar sem nýi og gamli tíminn mætast, þar sem hraunið stöðvaðist í eldgosinu 1973. Á Skanssvæðinu er norsk stafkirkja og Landlyst, annað elsta hús í Eyjum þar sem er lítið en merkilegt safn. Gakktu á Heimaklett, hæsta fjall í Eyjum. Heimaklettur er aðeins 283 m á hæð þannig að þetta tekur ekki neinn óratíma. 4 A Few Good Reasons For Visiting Vestmannaeyjar Tour the Natural History Museum (Náttúrugripasafnið): the only natural history museum in Iceland worthy of the name: watch fish and other creatures from the sea swim, crawl or creep in their aquariums, a fine display of stuffed birds and one of the best collections of Icelandic minerals anywhere. Drop by “Skansinn”, the place by the harbour where past and present meet, where the lava flow stopped in 1973. There you will find a Norse timber church, the only one of its kind in Iceland, a gift from the people of Norway, and Landlyst, the second oldest building in the islands, now housing a small, but interesting medical museum. Climb Heimaklettur, the highest rock formation in the islands. Its highest peak is no more than 283 meters, not demanding too much of your valuable time. Neither does it demand arduous climbing as ladders have been placed in the most difficult areas. And the view from the top is magnificent, whichever direction you prefer. Sail around the islands. A roundtrip taking about 90 minutes. Accompanying you is a guide who might perhaps be in the mood to play a trumpet or a saxophone inside one of the caves. You will see the birdlife in close up and, if lucky, whales playing their various games. Skemmtunin hefst með blysför jólasveina ofan af Há, þaðan er haldið upp á malarvöllinn í Löngulág, þar sem Grýla, Leppalúði, álfar, púkar og tröll bætast í inn við bálköst og skemmtuninni lýkur með veglegri flugeldasýningu. Goslokahátíð er haldin næstu helgi við 3. júlí en þann dag árið 1973 var því opinberlega lýst yfir að eldgosinu væri lokið. Hápunktur goslokahátíðar er á laugardagskvöld þegar blásið er til skemmtunar í krónum í Skvísusundi þar sem tónlistarmenn koma fram og hver syngur með sínu nefi. Mikið er um að brottfluttir Eyjamenn heimsæki Eyjar þessa helgi. 10 A Few Annual Social Events Vestmannaeyjar national festival is unquestionably the best known festival attracting the greatest number of mainland visitors. Held in Herjólfsdalur on the first weekend in August, it is a 3-4 day outdoor festival where having a good time is everyone´s easily fulfilled aim. The whole weekend is packed with entertainment of all description, including the traditional bonfire, fireworks and the famous “hillside sing-along”. Specially built structures fill the valley, not to mention the large white tents of the locals who literally move house during the festival and prove their famed hospitality by welcoming guests for coffee, smoked puffin and sundry other delicacies. 11 Celebrating the end of eruption. This has become a fixed event in the islands´ social life. It is held on the weekend following 3 July, the day in 1972 when the eruption was officially declared at an end. On Saturday night the island pubs open their doors and floors to musicians of all descriptions who are encouraged to sing and play to their hearts delight. A great number of former islanders choose this weekend for a visit. The thirteenth is the 13th day of Christmas, traditionally a festive day in the islands. A torch-lit parade of fascinating creatures: the ancient Icelandic ogress Grýla and her less than lovely husband and sons, as well as elfs, fairies, demons and trolls join the locals at a huge bonfire and splendid fireworks. Árlegar uppákomur A Few Annual Social Events Sailors´day, although a national day of festivities, has always been particularly dear to the hearts of the Westman islanders, not surprisingly so, considering their history. The sailor day festivities are held on the first weekend in June with a full programme on both Saturday and Sunday emphasing seamanship connected sports as well as various entertainment for the general public. Höfnin er sú eina á svæðinu frá Hornafirði til Þorlákshafnar. Vestmannaeyjar eru einn stærsti útgerðarbær landsins, en Eyjarnar liggja vel að mjög góðum fiskimiðum. Verstöðin í Vestmannaeyjum hefur lengi vel haft mikla þýðingu fyrir afkomu allra Íslendinga, en umtalsverður hluti af heildarútflutningi íslenskra sjávarafurða kemur frá Vestmannaeyjum. Vestmannaeyjar og höfnin í Eyjum vakti heimsathygli í eldgosinu 1973. Bæjarbúar voru fluttir til lands með fiskibátaflota Eyjanna. Óttast var um tíma að höfnin yrði jarðeldunum að bráð. Mikið hraun þrengdi innsiglinguna í höfnina og um tíma var útlit fyrir að hraunstraumur lokaði höfninni. Þar með hefði verið skorið á lífæð Eyjanna. Skjót viðbrögð og þrotlaus vinna við hraunkælingu hægði á og stöðvaði hraunrennslið til hafnarinnar. Í dag er innsiglingin í Vestmannaeyjahöfn lygnari og betri en hún var fyrir eldgosið á Heimaey 1973. 14 Vestmannaeyjar Harbour Vestmannaeyjar has a large fishing and transport harbour. It is the only harbour in Iceland’s south coast area from Hornafjörður to Þorlákshöfn. Vestmannaeyjar is home to one of the largest fishing communities in the country, lying close to rich fishing grounds. The Vestmannaeyjar fishing station has long been a major contributor to Iceland’s national income, but a considerable share of the country’s fishery exports derives from Vestmannaeyjar. cooling the lava slowed and eventually stopped its flow towards the harbour. A bus from the main bus station in Reykjavik has a schedule that makes a connecting trip or one can take one’s own car onto the ferry. The trip by sea across to the island takes about 35 minutes. Cars can be rented at the airport in Vestmannaeyjar, but the island is small enough that if one is up to hiking and not too limited by time, a car is not necessary.
