364 Making Sense of Intellectual Capital
A.24 Value-Added Intellectual Coefficient
Pulic is Professor of Economics at the University of Zagreb and the
University of Graz. He is best known for the development of the
VAIC, which he has used to measure the efficiency of key resources in
com-panies. Lately he has applied this approach to measure the
efficiency of regions in Croatia (IBEC, 2003). VAIC is a financial
valuation method.
Overview of 25 Valuation and Measurement Methods 365
A.24.1 Distinctions and Definitions
Pulic (IBEC, 2003) states that two key resources create value added
in companies: capital employed and intellectual capital. Capital
employed consists of physical and financial capital. Intellectual
capital consists of human and structural capital. Value added is the
output minus the input of a firm. Output is sales revenue; input is
everything that comes from outside the company.

U društvu IK - pionira
In Intellectual Capital for Communities, Editors Ahmed Bounfour and Leif Edvinsson have brought together
the best minds in intellectual capital throughout the world to focus on a new and fertile area of research:
measuring and managing the intellectual capital of communities. This is a creative and cutting-edge area of
research that has the potential to change how public sector planning and development is done. Once there is a
clear way to identify where wealth is created in a given nation, region, or city, this process has the potential to
reveal a huge knowledge repository in the public sector with a significant, but idle, potential for collective wealth
creation—the wealth of nations in waiting.
