EDITORIAL NEWS Write me back TOP STORY Website INTERVIEW +49179-1153054 POETRY BIRTH POETRY is a form of literature that uses aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language. This is the definition in the web. Our Arwoc Poets Sentence of the Month is much more, it is inspired by a Finish Reindeer and German jester. Enjoy it like always. What does BIRTH mean? Usually we use it if some in getting a baby. Inside of our Arwoc News it is only the short version for our Birthdays. That´s it. Our unique landscapes, regions, areas or sceneries belongs to our lifes. This is the reasons why we should write about our COUNTRYSIDES. Our Italian member Simona discovered a story about Padova and its Saint. "The Saint´s tongue" made history and an eponymous comedy film has been produced as well. Enjoy the movie. At the end, I would like that we pause for a moment in memories to all the terrible incidences during the last days. The world should react in a reasonable way! LINK #33 - Ulf 2008 EDITORIAL NEWS Write me back TOP STORY Website INTERVIEW +49179-1153054 POETRY BIRTH COUNTRYSIDE Impressum / Disclaimer ARWOC NEWS No. 33 | 2014 | Seite 3 ACONCAGUA - Climbing on Top of the Americas It was in 2007 when Maike and I went to Nepal for a bit of mountain climbing. The Annapurna Mountain Range is one of the most impressive areas of the Himalaya, and is home to some of the planets highest peaks. Claudio Großner Member No. 3 E-Mail [email protected] „And the starry sky at night! Damn it, you have never seen something like this before!“ By climbing the Thorung-La Pass we reached the highest point of our lives at 5,416 meters. Well - until then. The more I soaked up the atmosphere of these giant mountains, the more I wished to reach higher. A bigger challenge, a wider view, thinner air, a (much) higher mountain. And so I did. After some research I decided to climb Cerro Aconcagua in Argentina. With its 6,962 meters, it is not only the highest mountain of the Americas. It is the highest peak of the southern and western hemisphere, and one of the seven summits. I got my body into shape, found a tour operator for the expedition, saved some money, booked a flight and touched down in Mendoza on the 4th of January 2014. Mendoza is famous for two things: the amazing wine, and - of course - for being the starting point for expeditions to Mount Aconcagua. And so I quickly got in contact with other mountain climbers, and heard their stories. For many of them it was not the first attempt. The death rate here is higher than on Mt. Everest, because many mountaineers underestimate the dan- gers. First of all, temperatures can drop below -35 degrees Celsius, and so many came back with serious frostbites on their noses, fingers and toes. The altitude is another point, and you have to carefully get your body used to it, to avoid the mountain sickness which causes serious damage to your body and brain, and may eventually lead to death. And these are just two points out of many! You really start thinking, when you hear all that. Well the facts were not new, I was pretty well prepared. But it is one thing, if you read about something, and another, if you get first-hand information. And I gave the promise to my family back home, that I will return alive, and in one piece. Nevertheless, the next day brought a quick material check (sleeping bags, crampons, ice axe, etc.); we got us our climbing permit, and then hit the mountains. Accompanied by the majestic condors, and with breathtaking views of the mountains, valleys, glaciers and gorges, we headed for the first camp "Confluencia" on 3,400 meters. After the first night in our tents, we spent the next day TOP STORY CONTINUES } EDITORIAL NEWS Write me back TOP STORY Website INTERVIEW +49179-1153054 POETRY BIRTH COUNTRYSIDE Impressum / Disclaimer ARWOC NEWS No. 33 | 2014 | Seite 4 Of course, you like to read the hole story. L ower Horcones Glacier to Placa Francia - 4,200 meters for an acclimatization hike, along the lower Horcones Glacier to Placa Francia, and the south face of Mount Aconcagua. It is absolutely breathtaking. You are there on an altitude of 4,200 meters, the glacier comes down from the mountain like a giant, frozen river, and right in front of you emerges this massive stone wall, and reaches „The biggest respect goes to my wife Maike, and to my kids Matti and Lars, who respected my dream.“ another 2,800 meters up in the sky. And you know: "I have to get up there somehow!“ On the next day we continued to Aconcagua Base Camp on 4,200 meters. It is an eight hour walk through river beds, over stones and rocks, and exhausting steep passages. The air gets thinner and thinner, and the sun burns you brain out. But you get rewarded with a great view of the upper Horcones Glacier, and the silhouettes of condors up in the air. Every now and then an avalanche comes down with roaring thunder, but even if the camp is situated right ON the glacier, you are in safe distance. Instant soup for dinner never tasted this good. And the starry sky at night! Damn it, you have never seen something like this before! As soon as the frozen water was melted the next mor- EDITORIAL NEWS Write me back TOP STORY Website ning, we had breakfast and drank a few liters. (It is important to drink six to eight liters of water a day, to keep your blood from getting thick, and to help the body to get used to the altitude!) Then, we started to conquer the first summit. For acclimatization purposes, we climbed Cerro Bonete. The path is steep, the air dusty and dry, and we walk like we are on slow motion. Well, we could go faster, but we are trying to get used to the pace for the final summit day. Again we can see condors, the icy pinnacles of the glacier peeping through the dust and scree on the ground, and we enjoy the great view over the Andes, which is absolutely amazing. You feel like the king of the world, when you see this panorama. Cerro Bonete is 5.100 meters high, and from here you can see the complete mountain range from the sea on one side (the Chilean coastline) to the pampas on the other, including the north face of Aconcagua, and the route we were about to climb in the following days. UN-FUCKINGBELIEVABLE! With about 17 kilos on my back, I climbed up to Camp One on 5,000 meters the next day. We had to bring up some material, including food, tents, etc., and came back down the same day. After one recreational day in the base camp, where we did nothing more than hang around, drink gallons of water, read books and sleep, we eventually climbed up to Camp One the next day, with another 15 kilos of material in my backpack. The sunset this evening was not from this world, and so was the cold wind, just seconds after the sun disappeared. We went to bed early and carried on to Camp Two on 5,500 meters INTERVIEW +49179-1153054 POETRY BIRTH THE SUMMIT OF CERRO ACONCAGUA – 6,962 meters high! the next morning, where a snow storm gave us a pretty cold welcome. Building up a tent during a snow storm at this altitude is not exactly great fun, but once again, we were rewarded with a great view (once the clouds cleared for ten minutes)! We spent the rest of the day drinking as much as we could, sleeping, eating, and hoping the wind won't blow away our tents, as it turned into a real hurricane. When we woke up the next morning, there were around 40 centimeters of snow inside the flysheets of our tents, so we had to dig our way out of the tents. But guess what: except from our tents being covered under tons of snow, the weather this morning was great again. Blue skies, the world covered in glittering white snow, the summits of the Andes close at hand - just perfect. Summit day was getting closer, and now, this was the last day, before we started the final ascent! In the afternoon we reached Camp Three... Just imagine hanging around and working with those hockey babes all-day long. ;-) Gee, did I forget to mention that he won with that team a Gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in London and just added the World Championship title recently in The Hague underlining their international supremacy? Must remind the Germans of a recent event in Brazil... setting up closed-end real estate funds. The Dutch have specialized over the centuries in their constant fight against the sea as more than 25% of the country (also the most densely populated part) is below sea-level. Dikes, land reclamation projects and wind mills are essential ingredients for this battle. Culinary delights range from bitterballen and Gouda cheese, to poffertjes and stamppot. Furthermore off-course, everything the sea has to offer. ARWOC: Tell us the most curious situation in the last six months? Eduard: The first thirty minutes of soccer semi-final Germany-Brazil: there was hardly time to grab a beer without risking to have missed (at least) one goal. Awesome! ARWOC: Could you describe your job and the specialties in your country? ARWOC: What is the key point for you to be a member of ARWOC? Eduard: Got my own boutique investment firm that specializes in any combination of the three key words real estate, finance and structuring, for example Eduard: Have fun and get together at least once a year for the Berch with friends! Padova is town in north-eastern Italy, famous worldwide for its University, pieces of art (i.e. Giotto's frescoes in Cappella degli Scrovegni) and to be hometown of Saint Anthony dead body. Padova - Piazza Prato della Valle Saint Anthony dead body (he was actually from Lisbon, Portugal, but happened to die in Padova, and that's it) is still here. Among the thousands of pilgrims visiting Saint Anthony Basilica (just "the Saint" for pals & locals) very few are aware of the story of the theft of the Saint's tongue. The story goes that the Saint's body was exhumed many years after the death and miraculously the tongue and the chin were found intact. If you like to get more information, click here. Simona Scozzari Member No. 10 E-Mail [email protected] EDITORIAL NEWS Write me back TOP STORY Website So these pieces were extrapolated and put in reliquaries where everybody can still see them now. Back in 1991 three bandits with balaclavas and guns entered the crowded church and robbed the Saint's chin from a watchman. They were sent by a local "mafia" boss who asked a ransom to authority: freedom for an associate and stopping the police from bothering him, as he was INTERVIEW +49179-1153054 POETRY BIRTH under surveillance. Actually, the buddies were meant to kidnap the tongue, which was much more valuable, but probably they couldn't tell the difference (I couldn't tell the difference too, so I'm sympathetic) in that frantic moment and took the wrong one. Nobody knows if the ransom was "paid", but the chin was found unharmed 71 days later, some „The Saint´s say in Rome, some say it never moved tongue“ from Padova. Authority kept the secret about the finding. This fact made history under the name of "The Saint's tongue" theft, and an eponymous comedy film was made by a local director (Mazzacurati) a few years ago. Thank you Simona!
