The Ecological Environment Series : Fragrance of Taiwan Series
Love for the Native Soil: Works by Chen Ching-ming 1995 -2009
Date: 2009/08/01~09/13
Location: Galleries D1~D3
Chen Ching-ming began studying painting at Madrid's Royal Academy of Art in
1974 where he specialized in painting, printmaking and mural painting. Chen has
an ongoing interest in the spirit, style and development of postmodernism and neohumanism.
Having spent many years in Spain and Australia, Chen returned to Taiwan in 1995 to
live permanently. Since his return, the artist has devoted himself to promoting public
art and introducing the Taiwanese public to the latest ideas and techniques of public
art. Examples of Chen's work in this field include the murals of the Buddhist Tzu-Chi
General Hospital at Talin, Chiayi and some experiments in the techniques of mobile
murals. Chen's works during what the artist himself calls the "Taiwan Period" can be
seen to represent a process of root-searching, as the artist's concern has focused on
capturing the essence of daily life in his homeland.
Love for the Native Soil: Works by Chen Ching-Ming 1995 ǖ 2009 features works
that Chen has created since returning to Taiwan in 1995. The exhibition comprises,
among other works, a total of 74 paintings including Chen's gigantic painting The
Footpath, mural Fragrance of Taiwan, and other series. This exhibition also features
Chen's works across various media and disciplines including painting, stone-carving,
bronze sculpture and ceramics. These works illustrate changes in the artist's style and
character, which can be seen to reflect shifts in the life of the artist and how he has
responded to those changes.

CityscapesŌScenic Journeys: Tsai InTang's Centennial Special
Exhibition
Date: 2009/08/01Ɯ11/01
Location: Gallery A2
Born in Hsinpu township to Hakka Chinese family in Shih
Chou in 1909, Mr. Tsai In-tang is a self-taught artist without
any formal art school training. He was inspired to take
up painting early on by Japanese teacher Nanjou Hiroaki,
and he was taught by Japanese artist Siotuky Toho. He
became good friends with artists Chang Wan-chuan
and Chen Te-wang. Initially, Tsai was inspired by avantgarde Japanese painting, but later he came into contact
with European styles, such as Impressionism, Fauvism,
and Cubism. Throughout his life, Tsai devoted himself
to exploring new possibilities in art, and both Oriental
aesthetics and Western thought proved instrumental
influences in forming Tsai's artistic vision.
Renowned artist Shiy De-jinn devoted his whole life to studying modern western
art, and retraced his roots back to Taiwan's folk art. Documenting Taiwan's early
architecture and folk art of the post-war era became the backbone of his later creative
project. Shiy's insight into modern European and American art deeply enriched his
own artistic output.
Thanks to a donation from the Shyi De-jinn Foundation, the National Taiwan Museum
of Fine Arts houses 1,864 pieces of Shyi's collection, the largest collection of the artists
works. This collection preserves not only Shyi's artistic heritage, but also presents
a significant contribution to the study of Taiwanese art. NTMoFA has published 5
books in the ơShyi De-jinn Commemorative SeriesƢ categorized according to the
media used: watercolors, oil paintings, ink art, sketches and one based on Shyi's
own collection. A series of exhibitions based on the books were organized from 1991
through 1998. In 1993, the museum launched ơShyi De-jinn's World of WatercolorsƢ,
and worked with the Foundation to extend the exhibition to the Zhejiang Art School
and the National Art Museum of China in Beijing where various activities were held to
enhance the audiences' understanding and appreciation of Shyi's art.
ゾⳤߡ
This particular exhibition features different themes from Shyi's works in an attempt
to explore how, after his survey of modern western art and his studies with Lin Fengmian, he set about fusing these two approaches.

Transforming What Is Seen: An Exhibition of Donated Works by
Tsai Cao-ju
Date: 2009/08/01Ɯ10/04
Location: Gallery B2
Curator: Lin Ming-Hsien
Tsai's distinctive background, studying both under his uncle (renowned Tainan
craftsman Chen Yu-feng) and at the Kawabata Painting School in Tokyo, provided him
with a solid artistic foundation in two different traditions.
Tsai had established special characteristics in both artisanal paintings and creative
paintings, but it is his extraordinary contribution in artisan painting that makes him
stand out from the rest of Taiwanese artists.
As well as being a craftsman, Tsai is famous for painting directly from visual
observations. He was particularly fond of local, folk cultures as well as simple, naïve
landscapes. Via his brushes, Tsai has brought out the
natural beauty of the environment and presented the
tranquillity and innocence of rural life in Taiwan.
Humanistic Concern for History – Wu Yiao-Chung's Exibition for
Donation to NTMoFA
Date: 2009/07/04Ɯ09/13
Location: Gallery F
Curator: Chiu Ming-chiao
Wu Yiao-chung (1937-1987) was born in Sanyi, Miaoli but later moved to Sanxia, Taipei
with his father. He studied painting with the renowned artist Li Mei-shu in 1955. Wu's
realist technique is fully recognizably in the Li style and his early works were filled with
tranquillity and bliss.
Wu was fond of the realist style and interested in the relations between the individual
and history. His early works are mainly oils, but he later turns to portrait drawing and
sketches characterized by accurate strokes and fine lines. His career can be classified
into two periods: Classical Aestheticism (1957-1968) and Social Realism (1975-1987).
Wu's family generously donated 84 pieces including oil paintings, sketches and
watercolor paintings. Over 44 impressive artworks were selected to memorialize Wu's
short artistic life in this exhibition.

This show, curated by Laza Wu, is also a
collaboration with National Tidong University
which involved having students work with
people with mental illness for the art pieces
and recording the process of creation.
The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts currently
owns over 8,000 artwork, some of them purchased and
some of which have come from the generous donation
of artists and their families. These contributions enrich
the collection of the Museum and constitute a valuable
resource for researching Taiwanese art history.
This exhibition is divided into six themed periods that
trace the development of his art over the course of his
lifetime: 1. Hsinchu Nostalgia (pre-1953); 2. Flourishing
(1953-1963); 3. Western Thinking (1963-1970); 4. The
Shine (1970-1977); 5. Portraits of the World (1977-1998);
6. Figures and Still Lifes (1956-1992).
Tsai devoted his entire life to exploring and pursuing new avenues in art, creating
over 2,000 oil paintings, water colors, and sketches. This exhibition, aside from being
a salute to an artist who made great contributions to fine art in Taiwan, also hopes
to stimulate a ơdialogueƢ between the public and the works on display, as well as
explore Tsai's artistic vocabulary and the grace of his rich artistic style.

NTMoFA has organized this large scale technology-based art exhibition Freeze!ƞ
2009 International MedTech Art Show to extend the dialogue between medicine and
art. The exhibition series entitled Dimensions of the Senses: The Human Experience
of Interactive Art has been jointly programmed with the China Medical University.
It is hoped that this interactive and playful exhibition will go some way to foster
understanding and alleviate the emotional impact to both patients and families affected
by illness.
The exhibition's title Dimensions of the Senses refers to patients' subtle realizations
about changes in their body and their interpersonal relationship. Sensations such as
smell, sight, taste, hear and touch are not only our means of interacting with the world
but are also our mode of self-expression. This exhibition desires to create a channel
between the artistic world and real life to explore the moral values embedded in
aesthetics.
