The 2016 IRONMAN® 70.3® Hawai`i recognizes how the Hawai`i Island Community’s involvement makes the race special. Treat the land and people with the same warmth you receive and you will discover the true meaning of “Aloha.” IRONMAN® and IRONMAN® 70.3® events have chosen to adopt this policy to ensure the safety of all participants, volunteers and fans. As with other sporting events, IRONMAN® and IRONMAN® 70.3® events strive to provide a competitive and memorable event, one that allows all parties to enjoy the entire IRONMAN® experience. This policy will allow each competitor adequate time to celebrate their accomplishment without interfering with other finishers. Athletes who choose not to respect the new policy will receive an automatic disqualification (DQ). Recycling Note Malama `Aina (to care for the land) ~ Did you know that we will go through a total of 15,000+ bottles and 1,000+ cardboard boxes throughout race week and race day? Help us reduce, reuse and recycle by throwing away your plastic bottles and cans in the recycle containers throughout the race venue. Mahalo! ‘Olelo Hawai`i? (Speak Hawaiian?) A few local words you may want to remember: “Aloha” - Hello, good-bye and love “Da Kine” - substitute for any word you forget “E Komo Mai” - Welcome “Hanohano” - Esteemed, distinguished “Kane” - Male “Kokua” - Help someone “Kupau” - Completion “Lokahi” - Unity “Lua” - Restroom “Mahalo” - Thank you “`Ohana” - Family, support, sharing “Wahine” - Female 2016 HonuStuff Here are a few local customs: • Take off your shoes when visiting a local resident’s home but keep them on in restaurants. • Bikini briefs may be great for training, but please wear a pair of running shorts and other appropriate clothing in public places. And don’t forget: Public nudity is illegal in Hawai`i. • A service charge is not automatically added to your restaurant or hotel room service bill. The standard food service gratuity is 15-20 percent of your bill. Remember, waiters and waitresses depend on tips for their income. • While on training runs and bike rides, please use public restrooms and portable facilities. • Hawai`i Island’s West Hawai`i community is proud of its clean, graffiti-free highways. Anyone caught defacing roads or signs is subject to a fine and will not be invited to future IRONMAN® events. Please let your family and friends know only sidewalk chalk is allowed. The use of aerosol spray chalk is PROHIBITED. page 8 swim 1.2mi | bike 56mi | run 13.1mi Want Up-to-date Info on IRONMAN® 70.3® Hawai`i? Athletes and their `Ohana (friends and family) may now sign up to have up-to-date race related information texted directly to their phones. 2016 HonuStuff page 9 swim 1.2mi | bike 56mi | run 13.1mi Road Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility As a visiting athlete to Kona, you may be familiar with a wide variety of traffic laws from other states and other countries. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with Kona’s rules of the road. Bicyclists • Ride with the direction of traffic and obey traffic laws. • Be predictable (signal turns), visible (reflective clothing and lights) and courteous. • Ride in the bike lane or on the shoulder, not on the sidewalk. • Wear a helmet- a helmet is the most effective way to minimize brain injuries and deaths from collisions. • Avoid riding three or more on the roadway. • Pass with care- Pass other cyclists to the left. Start by scanning behind you to make sure no cars are coming upon you. Say “on your left” and make the pass safely and efficiently. • Say “Thank You” - Often motorists or pedestrians will yield to you; please mouth “Thank You” to let them know you care. Motorists • Watch for bicyclists and pedestrians at all times. • Pass bicyclists with care and give them room – Treat t hem as slow-moving vehicles. • Stop for pedestrians in crosswalks – It’s the law! • Don’t drive distracted – Put away the cell phone! Pedestrians • Walk facing traffic and watch for vehicles. • Be visible – Wear brightly colored and reflective clothing. • Always look left, right, left to be sure it is clear before crossing a street. • Listen for traffic – Avoid using iPods or cell phones. Personal safety on Kona roads is rooted in the spirit of an ancient law set by Hawaii’s King Kamehameha the First called Kanawai Mamalahoe, or Law of the Splintered Paddle. The law, later adopted as Hawai`i State Constitutional Law in 1978, states that all people have the right to safe passage on public roadways. Kanawai Mamalahoe was made law by King Kamehameha the First after he and an aid were walking along a shoreline trail and were attacked with a large wooden canoe paddle. The story goes that when his assailant hit the King’s head, the paddle splintered into bits. He then declared that regardless of your class or station in life, everyone has the right to move about safely in the public right of way. This ancient precept, now translated into modern law, is a guiding principle for all Hawaii’s roadway users – be they motorists, bicyclists or pedestrians. Kanawai Mamalahoe – Law of the Splintered Paddle 2016 HonuStuff page 10 swim 1.2mi | bike 56mi | run 13.1mi Packing and Airline Regulation From the U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) would like to congratulate all participants in the IRONMAN® 70.3® Hawai`i We realize that it has been a long road of training, dedication and sacrifice to reach the starting line and we wish all participants the best of luck. We hope that everyone finishes with personal bests and no injuries or disappointments. Dangerous goods (hazardous materials) continue to be a problem at airports within the Hawaiian Islands and air travel throughout the world. We are requesting the assistance of all athletes, your families and friends, to ensure the safety of yourselves, your fellow passengers, your aircraft and air carrier employees. Only certain dangerous goods are allowed, by regulation, to be carried by passengers and crew on an aircraft: • Non-radioactive medicinal and toilet articles (including aerosols) may be carried in checked or carry-on baggage. These would include shaving cream, deodorant, perfumes and like items. • Non-flammable aerosols with no subsidiary risk (toxic, corrosive) may be carried in checked baggage only. Flammable aerosols are not allowed in baggage. Please ensure all aerosols have a protective cap or other means to prevent inadvertent release of the contents. • One self-defense spray (pepper spray), not exceeding four ounces by volume, which incorporates a positive means to prevent accidental discharge may be carried in checked baggage only. • The total quantity of these items carried by one person may not exceed two kilos (70 ounces) by mass or two liters (68 fluid ounces) by volume. The capacity of each container may not exceed .5 kilos (18 ounces) by mass or 470 mil. (16 fluid ounces) by volume. • Smoking material is now limited to one book of safety matches or one butane lighter on the person (carry-on baggage only, not in checked baggage). Torches, mini-torches, micro torches and torch lighters are not permitted in checked or carry-on baggage or on the person. 2016 HonuStuff Other items such as alcohols, carbon dioxide or nitrogen cartridges, small oxygen cylinders or cartridges, adhesives and lubricants that are flammable may be hazardous and must be removed or declared to the air carrier when checking in. If in doubt, check with your air carrier at the start of your travels. The majority of these regulations are identical for both domestic and international travel. The United States dangerous goods regulations may be located online at ash.faa.gov. Please be aware that the dangerous goods exceptions granted by the United States Government may not be identical to the exceptions found internationally in ICAO or IATA. If you are planning to participate in other outdoor activities while in Hawai`i, such as hiking and camping, please do not bring liquid or propane fuel, fire starters or “strike anywhere” (cowboy) matches with you. These items may be purchased on all of the Hawaiian Islands. If you bring camping stoves or lanterns, please ensure they do not contain fuel of any sort and that they have been purged of fumes. These items constitute a serious safety hazard during flight. Since September 11, 2001, and with the current conditions regarding air travel, increased security measures have been implemented by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for air travel to, from and within the United States. There are a number of items that are currently prohibited from carriage within the cabin of an aircraft. To prevent these items from being taken away from you during your travels, they should be placed in your checked baggage. A list of these prohibited items may be found online at www.tsa. gov. This website will assist you in preparing to travel, explaining how to pack liquids and gels and will explain what you can expect concerning security screening of your checked and carry-on baggage. Again, we wish the best of luck to all athletes participating in the IRONMAN® 70.3® Hawai`i. We hope your travels are safe and your visit to Hawai`i is enjoyable. page 11 swim 1.2mi | bike 56mi | run 13.1mi SEPTEMBER 4, 2016 Your journey starts HERE. #roadtosunnycoast #IM703WC ironman.com/worldchampionship70.3 2016 HonuStuff page 12 2016 swim 1.2mi | bike 56mi | run 13.1mi HONU Protect Coral Reefs Protect Hawaii’s Reefs Use Reef Safe Sunscreen Recent studies of reef systems in Hawai‘i have shown high concentrations of oxybenzone in areas that tourists frequent the most.
